A New Species Of Frog (Strabomantidae: Pristimantis) From Peru With Comments On Its Ectoparasites (Acari: Trombiculidae), Alan W. Brus

Honors Projects

In South America, frogs of the genus Pristimantis are diverse and can be found from lowland forests to elevations of about 4000 m in the Andes. The 444 known species of Pristimantis belong to 16 species groups. One of these groups is the Pristimantis orestes Group, the 14 members of which inhabit the páramo, puna, and upper montane forests in southern Ecuador (3 species) and Peru (11 species). Species of the Pristimantis orestes Group are characterized by having snout-vent lengths ranging from 18.0 to 29.4 mm, short robust bodies, relatively short snouts, narrow digital discs, and areolate ventral skin. Some …

Meta-Analysis Of Environmental Kuznets Curve Studies: Determining The Cause Of The Curve's Presence, Brittany Goldman '12 Jan 2012

Meta-Analysis Of Environmental Kuznets Curve Studies: Determining The Cause Of The Curve's Presence, Brittany Goldman '12

The Park Place Economist

Worldwide public concern of the quality of our environment has ignited large efforts toward finding the determinants of environmental degradation. The Environmental Kuznet’s Curve (EKC) hypothesis models the relationship between levels of environmental degradation and income in a given economy and has been a topic of high debate in recent years. This concept hypothesizes the relationship between per capita income and the level of environmental degradation in an economy is an inverted U-shape. This focuses upon the idea that economic growth is necessary for environmental quality to be maintained or improved. Following Grossman and Krueger (1992), who first described the …

Economic Assimilation Of Chinese Immigrants In The United States: Is There Wage Convergence With Natives?, Eunis Wu '12

The Park Place Economist

Asian Americans have a long and profound history in the United States, and are usually referred to as the “model minority”. While the income level of immigrants depends on various factors, existing literature suggests that immigrants who can adapt well and are relatively successful in their new jobs can make a significant contribution to economic growth (Borjas, 2009).

Providers' And Key Opinion Leaders' Attitudes, Beliefs, And Practices Regarding Emergency Contraception In India: Final Survey Report, M.E. Khan, Deepthi S. Varma, Isha Bhatnagar, Anvita Dixit, Martha Brady Jan 2012

Providers' And Key Opinion Leaders' Attitudes, Beliefs, And Practices Regarding Emergency Contraception In India: Final Survey Report, M.E. Khan, Deepthi S. Varma, Isha Bhatnagar, Anvita Dixit, Martha Brady

Reproductive Health

The Population Council undertook this study to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding emergency contraception (ECPs) among providers in public and private facilities and pharmacies in India. This study’s objectives were: 1) to assess providers’ knowledge of ECP’s biological mechanism; 2) to understand providers’ knowledge and attitudes about ECP’s safety, effectiveness, and availability as an over-the-counter drug; and 3) to identify providers’ definitions of “repeated use” and profiling of women who are “repeated users” of ECP. The study recommends intervention programs and advocacy strategies to increase knowledge and access to ECP.

Adolescent And Caregiver Perception Of Family Functioning: Relation To Suicide Ideation And Attempts, Jessica M. Lipschitz, Shirley Yen, Lauren M. Weinstock, Anthony Spirito

Psychology Faculty Publications

This study assessed the relationship between perceived family functioning and two indicators of suicidality in an adolescent sample. A total of 103 adolescents psychiatrically hospitalized for suicidal ideation and/or behavior completed a battery of self-report questionnaires assessing family functioning, negative affectivity, suicidal ideation in the past week assessed by Beck's Scale for Suicide Ideation (BSS; Beck et al., 1979), and past suicide attempts. Participants' primary caregivers also completed a questionnaire on family functioning. A paired samples t-test evaluated overall discrepancy between adolescent- and caregiver-reported family functioning. Linear and logistic regression models were used to evaluate the simple associations between …

What About The “T’S”?: Addressing The Needs Of A Transgender Student At A Cccu Member Institution, Scott Barrett, Philip D. Byers, David M. Downey, Eric M. Gingerich Jan 2012

What About The “T’S”?: Addressing The Needs Of A Transgender Student At A Cccu Member Institution, Scott Barrett, Philip D. Byers, David M. Downey, Eric M. Gingerich

Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development

As the discussion of the LGBT community continues to evolve and inform decisions at higher education institutions, evidence suggests the “T”–transgender–discussion at CCCU institutions has remained stagnant and largely unrecognized. In June 2011 ACSD’s New Professionals Collaborative asked professionals to present a case study on how a CCCU institution would house a transgender student who had already been admitted into the institution. The authors found the literature on the subject to be sparse, and within the Christian context it is nearly nonexistent. The few precedents and best practices on housing a transgender student do not appear to align with the …

Amygdalar Stimulation Produces Alterations On Firing Properties Of Hippocampal Place Cells, Eun Joo Kim, Earnest S. Kim, Mijeong Park, Jeiwon Cho, Jeansok J. Kim

Faculty Publications - Psychology Department

Stress is a biologically ubiquitous factor that, when perceived uncontrollable by humans and animals, can have lingering adverse effects on brain and cognitive functions. We have previously reported that rats that experienced inescapable-unpredictable stress subsequently exhibited decreased stability of firing rates of place cells in the CA1 hippocampus, accompanied by impairments in CA1 long-term synaptic potentiation and spatial memory consolidation. Because the elevated level of glucocorticoid hormones and the heightened amygdalar activity have been implicated in the emergence of stress effects on the hippocampus, we investigated whether administration of corticosterone and electrical stimulation of the amygdala can produce stress-like alterations …
