Drought stress is one of the most important yield-reducing factors in crop production. Sunflower, an oilseed crop, is severely affected by abiotic stress. In this study, 2 sunflower cultivars (Musala and Aydın) were evaluated in terms of various biochemical and physiological responses under 2 different polyethylene glycol-mediated drought stress conditions. Stress-determining parameters such as malondialdehyde (MDA), hydrogen peroxide (H_{2}O_{2}), and proline contents were determined. Both cultivars showed similar responses at osmotic potentials of both -0.4 and -0.8 MPa. Aydın was less affected than Musala under these stress conditions. MDA, H_{2}O_{2}, and proline levels were similar at both -0.4 and -0.8 …

Influence Of Mycorrhizal Strategy On The Foliar Traits Of The Plants On The Tibetan Plateau In Response To Precipitation And Temperature, Zhaoyong Shi, Yanying Liu, Fayuan Wang, Yinglong Chen

Turkish Journal of Botany

Mycorrhizas play key roles in important ecosystem processes and functions. To enhance our understanding of the impact of mycorrhizal strategies on important foliar traits of host plants and their response to climate changes, we analysed 6 selected foliar traits among 54 plant species in 129 sampling sites of ascertained mycorrhizal types on the Tibetan Plateau based on their functional groups. The selected traits were leaf mass per area (LMA), nitrogen concentration (on mass and area bases, N_{mass} and N_{area}, respectively), photosynthetic capacity (A_{mass} and A_{area}) and photosynthetic nitrogen use efficiency (PNUE). The analysed foliar traits showed no significant difference between …

A Novel Function For Snap29 (Synaptosomal-Associated Protein Of 29 Kda) In Mast Cell Phagocytosis., Jordan Wesolowski, Vernon Caldwell, Fabienne Paumet

Department of Microbiology and Immunology Faculty Papers

Mast cells play a critical role in the innate immune response to bacterial infection. They internalize and kill a variety of bacteria and process antigen for presentation to T cells via MHC molecules. Although mast cell phagocytosis appears to play a significant role during bacterial infection, little is known about the proteins involved in its regulation. In this study, we demonstrate that the SNARE protein SNAP29 is involved in mast cell phagocytosis. SNAP29 is localized in the endocytic pathway and is transiently recruited to Escherichia coli (E. coli)-containing phagosomes. Interestingly, overexpression of SNAP29 significantly increases the internalization and killing of …

Defense Of Marriage Act, Will You Please Go Now!, Joanna L. Grossman

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

The time has come.
The time has come.
The time is now.
Just go.
Go.
GO!
I don’t care how.
You can go by foot.
You can go by cow.
Marvin K. Mooney, will you please go now!

These are the opening lines of Marvin K. Mooney Will You Please Go Now!, a Dr. Seuss book that my three sons and I have read literally hundreds of times. It has all the usual appeal of a Dr. Seuss book -- euphonious rhymes, made-up words and objects, fantastical creatures. But it has something else, too. An air of mystery. The …

Chrysaora Quinquecirrha Polyps In Barnegat Bay, Nj, Monica Katherine Buesser Jan 2012

Chrysaora Quinquecirrha Polyps In Barnegat Bay, Nj, Monica Katherine Buesser

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Sea nettles (Chrysaora quinquecirrha) have become abundant in the estuaries of the Mid- Atlantic States. Their ample numbers are an indicator of a disturbed ecosystem. Various factors have been attributed to the rise in numbers of sea nettles including eutrophication, overfishing, global warming, construction and species introduction. Bamegat Bay is a highly eutrophic system with excess nitrogen and organic carbon arriving in the bay via runoff and watershed waste inputs. Many commercial fisheries in Bamegat Bay have ceased to exist and the remaining fisheries are dwindling. An overabundance of medusae and polyps will further impact fisheries since jellyfish compete with …

Pcr Amplification And Dna Sequence Analysis Of The Ss-Actin Gene From A Scyphozoan Jellyfish (Chrysaora Quinquecirrha), Lorraine Malkowitz

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

The scyphozoan jellyfish Chrysaora quinquecirrha (CQ) is becoming a major pest of Eastern bays and waterways due to changing environmental conditions, including the warming of inlet waters, man-made plastic bulkheads and reduced plant life which serve as havens for their predators. Their increasing numbers warrants investigations into population control of these animals. Therefore any information about them may help in understanding and eventually controlling jellyfish blooms.

ß-actin is a ubiquitous cytoskeletal protein that has many essential functions. The protein and nucleotide sequences are highly conserved across all species, yet the number, size and sequences of the introns are highly variable. …

Characterization Of Human Icer Promoter And Comparative Studies Of Its Activity In Human Prostate Cancer Cells, Dipika Bhagvanji Patel Jan 2012

Characterization Of Human Icer Promoter And Comparative Studies Of Its Activity In Human Prostate Cancer Cells, Dipika Bhagvanji Patel

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

The Inducible cAMP Early Repressor (ICER) is a dominant transcriptional repressor that binds to cAMP responsive elements (CRE) located in the promoter of a target gene to repress cAMP-mediated gene transcription. The promoter of ICER contains four regulatory CRE sequences, termed cAMP autoregulatory response elements (CAREs) that are highly inducible by cAMP signaling. In a cell, cAMP pathway induces the expression of ICER, however, when ICER protein level increases above normal level, it can repress its own production by binding to these CARE sites located in its promoter region. ICER is normally present in neuroendocrine cells, however, it is not …

Opposing Roles Of The Μ-Opioid And Nociceptin/Orphanin Fq Receptors In Oligodendrocyte Development And Myelination, Allison Vestal-Laborde Jan 2012

Opposing Roles Of The Μ-Opioid And Nociceptin/Orphanin Fq Receptors In Oligodendrocyte Development And Myelination, Allison Vestal-Laborde

Theses and Dissertations

While the classical function of myelin is to facilitate saltatory conduction, this membrane and the myelin-making oligodendrocytes (OLGs) are now recognized as regulators of plasticity and remodeling in the central nervous system (CNS). Thus, OLG maturation and myelination are highly vulnerable processes along CNS development. We previously showed that rat brain myelination is altered by perinatal exposure to buprenorphine, an opioid analogue in clinical trials for the treatment of pregnant opioid addicts. We now found that the in vivo effects on myelination could result from direct alteration in the balance between μ-opioid receptor (MOR) and nociceptin/orphanin FQ receptor (NOPR) activities …

Changing The Marriage Equation, Deborah A. Widiss Jan 2012

Changing The Marriage Equation, Deborah A. Widiss

Articles by Maurer Faculty

This Article brings together legal, historical, and social science research to analyze how couples allocate income-producing and domestic responsibilities. It develops a framework—what I call the “marriage equation”—that shows how sex-based classifications, (non-sex-specific) substantive marriage law, and gender norms interrelate to shape these choices. The marriage equation has changed over time, both reflecting and engendering societal preferences regarding the optimal allocation of breadwinning and caretaking responsibilities.

Until fifty years ago, sex-based classifications in family and employment law aligned with gender norms to enforce an ideology of separate spheres for men and women. The groundbreaking sex discrimination cases of the 1970s …

Using A Thinking Skills System To Guide Discussions During A Working Conference On Students With Disabilities Pursuing Stem Fields, Audrey C. Rule, Greg P. Stefanich Jan 2012

Using A Thinking Skills System To Guide Discussions During A Working Conference On Students With Disabilities Pursuing Stem Fields, Audrey C. Rule, Greg P. Stefanich

Curriculum & Instruction Faculty Publications

Students with sensory or motor disabilities are often dissuaded from pursuing science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) careers. They are frequently underprepared to succeed in post-secondary STEM coursework because of inadequate high school preparation and limited post-secondary accommodations. A two-day working conference stimulated dialogue to improve attitudes toward, to better support, and to plan accommodations for students with physical disabilities in STEM areas. Discussion questions during the five small group dialogue sessions that followed panels of speaker presentations were based on Edward de Bono’s (2000) CoRT ten Breadth thinking skills. These thinking skills broaden perception so that thinkers might see …

Schools In Balance: Comparing Iowa Physics Teachers And Teaching In Large And Small Schools, Trevor Kittleson, Jeffrey T. Morgan Jan 2012

Schools In Balance: Comparing Iowa Physics Teachers And Teaching In Large And Small Schools, Trevor Kittleson, Jeffrey T. Morgan

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

In 2009 we surveyed all known Iowa high school physics teachers to gain insight into their educational backgrounds, instructional styles, content coverage, and available resources. Based upon a suggestion made at a subsequent presentation, we reexamined the collected data, comparing the responses of teachers from small and large schools to see if there were notable differences between the two populations. We found that teachers at larger schools teach a wider variety of physics courses, including more advanced and “physics first” style courses, and report stronger educational backgrounds in physics. While larger schools also have more financial resources allocated for physics …

Five New Records Of Ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) For Nebraska, Kristine T. Nemec, James C. Tager, Elizabeth Manley, Craig R. Allen Jan 2012

Five New Records Of Ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) For Nebraska, Kristine T. Nemec, James C. Tager, Elizabeth Manley, Craig R. Allen

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

Ants are ubiquitous and influential organisms in terrestrial ecosystems. About 1,000 ant species occur in North America, where they are found in nearly every habitat (Fisher and Cover 2007). Ants are critical to ecological processes and structure. Ants affect soils via tunneling activity (Baxter and Hole 1967), disperse plant seeds (Lengyel et al. 2009), prey upon a variety of insects and other invertebrates (Way and Khoo 1992, Folgarait 1998), are often effective primary consumers through their prodigious consumption of floral and especially extrafloral nectar, and honeydew (Tobin 1994), and serve as prey for invertebrates (Gotelli 1996, Gastreich 1999) and vertebrates …

Antimicrobial Efficacy Of Edible Soy Protein Isolate Films And Coatings Incorporated With Hop Ethanol Extract And The Influence On Shelf-Life And Sensory Attributes Of Bologna, Jamie R. G. Skudlarek

Theses and Dissertations--Animal and Food Sciences

There is demand for improved security of refrigerated ready-to-eat meats. Antimicrobial edible films and coatings could function as an added barrier against post-processing contamination. Hops and hop extracts are known for their antimicrobial efficacy which is attributed to key antimicrobial components including humulones, lupulones, xanthohumol and various terpenoids. Yet, hop ethanol extract has not been studied as an antimicrobial to incorporate into edible protein films and/or coatings. The overall objective of this research was to evaluate hop ethanol extract as an antimicrobial agent incorporated into edible soy protein isolate (SPI) films and coatings, and the influence on the shelf-life and …

Neuroangiogenesis: A Vascular Basis For Alzheimer's Disease And Cognitive Decline During Aging, Charles T. Ambrose Jan 2012

Neuroangiogenesis: A Vascular Basis For Alzheimer's Disease And Cognitive Decline During Aging, Charles T. Ambrose

Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications

Angiogenesis directs development of the brain's microcirculation during antenatal and postnatal development, but its role later in life is less well recognized. I contend that during senescence a reduced cerebral capillary density accounts in part for the vascular cognitive impairment observed in many older persons and possibly for some forms of Alzheimer's disease. I propose that neuroangiogenesis is essential throughout adult life for maintaining the microcirculation of the cerebral cortex and elsewhere in the brain and that it commonly declines with old age. To support this hypothesis I have examined the neurological literature for relevant studies on cerebral capillary density …
