Reconstructability Analysis Of Genetic Loci Associated With Alzheimer Disease, Martin Zwick, Shawn K. Westaway, Stephen Shervais, Patricia L. Kramer
Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations
Reconstructability Analysis (RA) is an information- and graph-theory-based method which has been successfully used in previous genomic studies. Here we apply it to genetic (14 SNPs) and non-genetic (Education, Age, Gender) data on Alzheimer disease in a well-characterized Case/Control sample of 424 individuals. We confirm the importance of APOE as a predictor of the disease, and identify one non-genetic factor, Education, and two SNPs, one in BINI and the other in SORCS1, as likely disease predictors. SORCS1 appears to be a common risk factor for people with or without APOE. We also identify a possible interaction effect between Education and …
Na+/K+-Atpase Isoform Regulation In Three-Spine Stickleback (Gasterosteus Aculeatus) During Salinity Acclimation, Shelby Judd
Na+/K+-Atpase Isoform Regulation In Three-Spine Stickleback (Gasterosteus Aculeatus) During Salinity Acclimation, Shelby Judd
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
Most marine and all freshwater fishes regulate the ionic and osmotic composition of their extracellular fluids different from the outside environment. The gills play a prominent osmoregulatory role in maintaining whole body ion and water balance in fish living in both freshwater and saltwater environments. The ability of the gill to regulate salts is dependent on the action of the Na+/K+-ATPase. When euryhaline fishes, fishes able to tolerate changes in external salinity, experience changes in environmental salinity, they alter their gill physiology and Na+/K+-ATPase activity to handle changing osmotic and ionic stresses. …
Natural Mentoring Relationships As A Buffer Against The Negative Effects Of Stressors On Academic Outcomes Of Latino Adolescents, Claudio Rivera
Natural Mentoring Relationships As A Buffer Against The Negative Effects Of Stressors On Academic Outcomes Of Latino Adolescents, Claudio Rivera
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
This cross-sectional study examined 192 Latino adolescents in their ninth grade of high school. A resiliency theory framework was used for this study. The purpose of the study was to determine if natural mentoring relationships served a compensatory and protective role against stressors on the academic outcomes of Latino adolescents in their first year of high school. Using multiple hierarchical regression analyses, it was determined that stressors and mentoring relationship quality had main effects and interaction effects on the academic outcomes of Latino adolescents. Thus, support for the compensatory and protective model of resilience was provided in some aspects of …

Interstitial Cells Of Cajal : Pathology, Injury And Repair, Dhuha Al-Sajee, Jan D. Huizinga
Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal
Interstitial cells of cajal (ICC) are specialised cells located within the musculature of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT). Although they form only 5% of the cells in the musculature of the GIT, they play a critical role in regulating smooth muscle function and GIT motility in coordination with the enteric nervous system. C-kit is a transmembrane glycoprotein that plays a critical role in ICC development and maturation. Physiological conditions such as ageing, as well as pathological conditions that have different disease processes, negatively affect ICC networks and function. Absent or disordered ICC networks can be associated with disorders in GIT motility. …

Wings Over The Great Plains: Bird Migrations In The Central Flyway, Paul A. Johnsgard
Wings Over The Great Plains: Bird Migrations In The Central Flyway, Paul A. Johnsgard
Zea E-Books Collection
The Central Flyway has been recognized as a collective North- South migratory pathway centered on the North American Great Plains for nearly a century, but it has never been analyzed as the species that most closely follow it, or the major stopping points used by those species on their journeys between their northern breeding and southern wintering grounds. A total of 114 U.S. and 21 Canadian localities of special importance to birds migrating within the Central Flyway are identified and described in detail. Judging from available regional, state and local information, nearly 400 species of 50 avian families regularly use …
Allied Forces: The Working Alliance For Meaningful Parenteducator Partnerships In Special Education, Danielle Magaldi-Dopman, Timothy Conway
Allied Forces: The Working Alliance For Meaningful Parenteducator Partnerships In Special Education, Danielle Magaldi-Dopman, Timothy Conway
The Journal of Special Education Apprenticeship
Strong parent-educator partnerships in special education yield benefits for parents, teachers and students, however there are often obstacles to the development of these partnerships, and teacher preparation programs and professional development are often deficient in preparing special education teachers for the complexities of this relationship building. In the following, the varied interpretations of parental involvement are explored, followed by a discussion of some of the significant obstacles to strong parent-teacher partnerships in special education classrooms. Authors introduce the working alliance as a solution for framing positive parent-educator relationships. Finally, the three elements of a working alliance are described with an …

Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia : A Paradigm For Malignancy Or Just A Strange Disease?, Shaun R. Mccann
Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia : A Paradigm For Malignancy Or Just A Strange Disease?, Shaun R. Mccann
Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal
Chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML), previously a fatal illness, is now readily manageable with oral medication. First described in the 1840s, there was no widely accepted cure until the advent of allogeneic stem cell transplantation in the late 1970s. This treatment was of limited value because of donor availability and toxicity problems. Discovering the Philadelphia chromosome and demonstrating that the BCR-ABL chimaeric gene was responsible for the malignant phenotype opened new avenues. The development of tyrosine kinase inhibitors(TKIs) changed the lives of patients with CML. The treatment has been so successful that compliance is now a problem. Currently under discussion is …

Spectrum Of Aids Defining Opportunistic Infections In A Series Of 77 Hospitalised Hiv-Infected Omani Patients, Abdullah A. Balkhair, Zakariya K. Al-Muharrmi, Shyam Al-Jabri, Ali A.
Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal
Objectives: Most of the morbidity and mortality in human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immune deficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) result from opportunistic infections (OIs). Although the spectrum of OIs in HIV infected patients from developing countries has been reported, there is a paucity of data on the natural history, pattern of disease, and survival of hospitalised patients with HIV/AIDS, particularly in Arab countries. The aim of this study was to study retrospectively the spectrum and frequency of various OIs in a cohort of hospitalised HIV-infected Omani patients. Methods: Included in the study were 77 HIV-infected Omani patients admitted to a tertiary care teaching hospital …

The Japanization Of Karate?: Placing An Intangible Cultural Practice, Noah C.G. Johnson
The Japanization Of Karate?: Placing An Intangible Cultural Practice, Noah C.G. Johnson
Journal of Contemporary Anthropology
Although Okinawa is now under the political administration of Japan, its history has been shaped under the influence of Chinese, Japanese and, most recently, American military domination. Moreover, both Okinawans and the Japanese of the mainland, recognize that Okinawa is differentiated from the rest of Japan by its individual history and distinct cultural practices. One of the most recognizable products of Okinawan culture is karate, at base a martial art but also a cultural practice inscribed with relationships and ideas inherited from wider Okinawan society. At the beginning of the 20th-century this practice was brought to mainland Japan. This paper …
Prestige, Transmission, And Barbed Bone And Antler Points In The Gulf Of Georgia, Northwest Coast, Adam N. Rorabaugh
Prestige, Transmission, And Barbed Bone And Antler Points In The Gulf Of Georgia, Northwest Coast, Adam N. Rorabaugh
Journal of Contemporary Anthropology
Did the emergence of social complexity in the Gulf of Georgia, Northwest Coast affect the social learning contexts of technologies? Barbed bone and antler technologies were examined from a Darwinian perspective using Boyd and Richerson's (1985) dual inheritance approach in order to further understand their social learning context. Barbed point attributes were examined for prestige-based indirect (context) bias (Henrich and Henrich 2007), the adoption of cultural traits due to unrelated traits, such as status. The emergence of this form of transmission was expected to emerge with the Developed Northwest Coast pattern (Matson and Coupland 1995). Phylogenetic methods and cluster analyses …

Nucleic-Acid-Binding Chromophores As Efficient Indicators Of Aptamer-Target Interactions, Kwabena Sarpong, Bhaskar Datta
College of Natural and Applied Sciences
The binding affinity and specificity of nucleic acid aptamers have made them valuable candidates for use as sensors in diagnostic applications. In particular, chromophore-functionalized aptamers offer a relatively simple format for detection and quantification of target molecules. We describe the use of nucleic-acid-staining reagents as an effective tool for detecting and signaling aptamer-target interactions. Aptamers varying in size and structure and targeting a range of molecules have been used in conjunction with commercially available chromophores to indicate and quantify the presence of cognate targets with high sensitivity and selectivity. Our assay precludes the covalent modification of nucleic acids and relies …

This minireview provides the current status on gonadotropin-releasing hormone receptors (GnRH-R) in vertebrates, from the perspective of a basal vertebrate, the sea lamprey, and provides an evolutionary scheme based on the recent advance of whole genome sequencing. In addition, we provide a perspective on the functional divergence and evolution of the receptors. In this review we use the phylogenetic classification of vertebrate GnRH receptors that groups them into three clusters: type I (mammalian and non-mammalian), type II, and type III GnRH receptors. New findings show that the sea lamprey has two type III-like GnRH receptors and an ancestral type GnRH …

Sperm whale myoglobin (Mb) has weak dehaloperoxidase activity and catalyzes the peroxidative dehalogenation of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (TCP) to 2,6-dichloroquinone. Crystals of Mb and of its more active G65T variant were used to study the binding of TCP, 4-iodophenol (4-IP) and phenol. The structures of crystals soaked overnight in a 10 mM solution of phenol revealed that a phenol molecule binds in the proximal cavity, forming a hydrogen bond to the hydroxyl of Tyr146 and hydrophobic contacts which include interactions with C and C of the proximal histidine His93. The phenol position corresponds to the strongest xenon binding site, Xe1. It …

Morphological, Phylogenetic, And Ecological Analyses Of The New Model Grass Species Setaria Viridis (Poaceae) And Its Close Relative Setaria Faberi, Daniel J. Layton
Theses
Species limits as defined by herbarium taxonomists are nearly always based on intuitive morphological comparisons with little concrete data or statistical analysis. Setaria viridis (tribe Paniceae, subtribe Cenchrinae), an emerging model organism for the study of C4 photosynthesis, is one such inadequately defined species. In order to evaluate its relationship with the morphological intergrading Setaria faberi, a “total data” approach was taken. Statistical morphology, cytology, molecular phylogenetics, and growth experimentation were employed to examine the putative species boundary in this group. Principal components analysis of 70 morphological characters in 85 individuals revealed consistent separation between the two species in morphospace, …

Nonlinear Dynamic Field Embedding: On Hyperspectral Scene Visualization, Dalton Lunga, Okan Erosy
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
In many areas of research, complex signals are commonly represented by high dimensional feature vectors. However, high dimensional vectors are difficult to analyze and interpret due to the curse of dimensionality. Ongoing research efforts simplify this problem by seeking data representations on a low dimensional space. Traditional dimensionality reduction methods spend little effort toward formulating unifying platforms and very few approaches provide intuitive insights that enable the design of local topology preserving algorithms. This study introduces a new localized bilateral kernel function for computing the high dimensional neighborhood graph of image data. The kernel function injects spatial sensitivity details that …

Growth Gone Awry: Exploring The Role Of Embryonic Liver Development Genes In Hcv Induced Cirrhosis And Hepatocellular Carcinoma, Martha K. Behnke
Theses and Dissertations
Introduction and methods: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains a difficult disease to study even after a decade of genomic analysis. Metabolic and cell-cycle perturbations are known, large changes in tumors that add little to our understanding of the development of tumors, but generate “noise” that obscures potentially important smaller scale expression changes in “driver genes”. Recently, some researchers have suggested that HCC shares pathways involving the master regulators of embryonic development. Here, we investigated the involvement and specificity of developmental genes in HCV-cirrhosis and HCV-HCC. We obtained microarray studies from 30 patients with HCV-cirrhosis and 49 patients with HCV-HCC and compared …

Background: Increasing the distribution and use of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) in Sub-Saharan Africa has made controlling malaria with ITNs more practical. We evaluated community effects induced by ITNs, specifically long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs), under ordinary conditions in an endemic malaria area of Western Kenya. Methods: Using the database from Mbita Health and Demographic Surveillance System (HDSS), children younger than 5 years old were assessed over four survey periods. We analyzed the effect of bed net usage, LLIN density and population density of young people around a child on all-cause child mortality (ACCM) rates using Cox PH models. Results: During the …

Returning To Hazelwood'S Core: A New Approach To Restrictions On School-Sponsored Speech, Emily Gold Waldman
Florida Law Review
This Article begins by discussing the Hazelwood decision in depth. It then discusses the various contexts in which courts have applied Hazelwood and the circuit split that has developed over how broadly Hazelwood should reach. Next, it describes the circuit split over whether Hazelwood permits viewpoint-based speech restrictions, highlighting the different speech contexts in which the circuits have reached divergent conclusions. The Article then argues that the overextension of Hazelwood links the two splits. This Part also discusses why Hazelwood is uniquely suited to the student speech context and why other doctrines—namely, the Pickering–Connick framework for teachers’ classroom …

Proposed Coherent Trapping Of A Population Of Electrons In A C60 Molecule Induced By Laser Excitation, Thomas George, G.P. Zhang
Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Works
This Letter demonstrates the possibility of generating coherent population trapping in C60. Similar to a three-level Λ system, C60 has a forbidden transition between the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) (|a⟩) and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) (|c⟩), but a dipole-allowed transition between HOMO and LUMO+1 (|b⟩) and between |b⟩ and |c⟩. We employ two cw laser fields, one coupling and one probe. The strong coupling field is switched on first to resonantly excite the transition between |b⟩ and |c⟩. After a delay, the probe is switched on; the coherent interaction between the coupling and probe fields traps the …

Sea ice is believed to be a major factor shaping gene flow for polar marine organisms, but it remains unclear to what extent it represents a true barrier to dispersal for arctic cetaceans. Bowhead whales are highly adapted to polar sea ice and were targeted by commercial whalers throughout Arctic and subarctic seas for at least four centuries, resulting in severe reductions in most areas. Both changing ice conditions and reductions due to whaling may have affected geographic distribution and genetic diversity throughout their range, but little is known about range-wide genetic structure or whether it differed in the past. …
