Acute Alcohol Ingestion And Sympathetic Neural Responses During Orthostatic Stress In Humans, Sarah F. Stream Jan 2012

Acute Alcohol Ingestion And Sympathetic Neural Responses During Orthostatic Stress In Humans, Sarah F. Stream

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Acute alcohol consumption has been reported to decrease mean arterial pressure (MAP) during orthostatic challenge, a response that may contribute to alcohol-mediated hypotension and eventually syncope. Muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) increases during orthostatic stress to help maintain MAP, yet the influence of alcohol on MSNA during orthostatic stress has not been determined. We hypothesized that alcohol ingestion would blunt arterial blood pressure and MSNA responses to progressive lower body negative pressure (LBNP). MAP, MSNA, and heart rate (HR) were recorded during progressive LBNP (-5, -10, -15, -20, -30, and -40 mmHg; 3 min/stage) in 30 subjects(age 24 ± 1 …

Functional Analysis Of Rice Bidirectional Promoters, Surendar R. Dhadi Jan 2012

Functional Analysis Of Rice Bidirectional Promoters, Surendar R. Dhadi

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Bidirectional promoters regulate adjacent genes organized in a divergent fashion (head to head orientation). Several Reports pertaining to bidirectional promoters on a genomic scale exists in mammals. This work provides the essential background on theoretical and experimental work to carry out a genomic scale analysis of bidirectional promoters in plants.

A computational study was performed to identify putative bidirectional promoters and the over-represented cis-regulatory motifs from three sequenced plant genomes: rice (Oryza sativa), Arabidopsis thaliana, and Populus trichocarpa using the Plant Cis-acting Regulatory DNA Elements (PLACE) and PLANT CARE databases. Over-represented motifs along with their possible …

Uptake And Fate Of Hexahydro-1,3,5-Trinitro-1,3,5-Triazine By Chrysopogon Zizanioides, Claire M. Doskey

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX) is a nitramine compound that has been used heavily by the military as an explosive. Manufacturing, use, and disposal of RDX have led to several contamination sites across the United States. RDX is both persistent in the environment and a threat to human health, making its remediation vital. The use of plants to extract RDX from the soil and metabolize it once it is in the plant tissue, is being considered as a possible solution. In the present study, the tropical grass Chrysopogon zizanioides was grown hydroponically in the presence RDX at 3 different concentration levels: 0.3, 1.1, …

Regional Comparisons Of Nano-Mechanical Properties Of The Human Meniscus; Structure And Function, John Thomas Moyer

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a debilitating disease that is becoming more prevalent in today’s society. OA affects approximately 28 million adults in the United States alone and when present in the knee joint, usually leads to a total knee replacement. Numerous studies have been conducted to determine possible methods to halt the initiation of OA, but the structural integrity of the menisci has been shown have a direct effect on the progression of OA. Menisci are two C-shaped structures that are attached to the tibial plateau and aid in facilitating proper load transmission within the knee. The meniscal cross-section is wedge-like …

The Effect Of Risk Assessment On Racial Disproportionality In The Child Welfare System, Joseph Martin Jan 2012

The Effect Of Risk Assessment On Racial Disproportionality In The Child Welfare System, Joseph Martin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Minority children are involved in the child welfare system at rates disproportionate to their numbers in the overall population. Prior research argues that risk assessments conducted by child welfare agencies may be racially biased, and thus contribute to disproportionality. This study seeks to explore the effect of different risk assessment models on racial disproportionality. This is done by examining the relationship between race/ethnicity and various child welfare outcomes in three states that utilize the consensus-based model and three states that utilize the actuarial model of risk assessment. Results were similar for both groups of states, suggesting that one model is …

Experimental Evaluation Of Entomopathogenic Fungi For The Biological Control Of Philebotomine Sand Flies (Diptera Psychodidae), Philip M Ngumbi Jan 2012

Experimental Evaluation Of Entomopathogenic Fungi For The Biological Control Of Philebotomine Sand Flies (Diptera Psychodidae), Philip M Ngumbi

All PhD Dissertations

The leishmaniases are some of the WHO's neglected tropical diseases which pose threat to human life in both the New and Old World. They are mostly transmitted through the bite of infected sand flies. The disease affects the poor from the third world. Diseae control through chemotherapy is logistically difficult, toxic, expensive and out of reach for many. Entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) hold great potential as alternative vector control. These fungi infect the host through the cuticle. They are friendlier to non-target organisms than synthetic chemical insecticides. Although EPF are widely used to control agricultural pests, few attempts have been made …

Bioecology Of The Mango Mealybug,Rastrococcus Iceryoides Green (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) And Its Associated Natural Enemies In Kenya And Tanzania, Chrysantus Mbi Tanga

All PhD Dissertations

Rastrococcus iceryoides Green (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae), an alien invasive mealybug pest of Asian origin was first detected in Tanzania in 1989. This pest rapidly spread by the mid-1990s and was soon present in Coastal Kenya and Northern Malawi, where it has been regarded and remains a major pest of mango. Because of its novelty status, there was no information on its biology, ecology and its natural enemies that could aid development of management efforts. This study, therefore, was initiated to establish the bioecology of R. iceryoides and its natural enemies in Kenya and Tanzania, and to explore for efficient co-evolved natural …

Behavioural Effects Of Fungal Infection By Metarhizium Anisopliae In Adult Malaria Mosquitoes, Sopher N. Ondiaka Jan 2012

Behavioural Effects Of Fungal Infection By Metarhizium Anisopliae In Adult Malaria Mosquitoes, Sopher N. Ondiaka

All PhD Dissertations

Malaria remains a major global health problem with the burden of disease greatest in Sub-Saharan Africa. The strategies for malaria control differ throughout the world according to levels of endemicity and the magnitude of disease but the focus remains either to control malaria parasites or vectors. A high degree of drug resistance and the absence of malaria vaccines are a major hindrance to control of the disease. In such circumstances, vector control becomes an alternative and has remained the most effective means to prevent malaria transmission. Contemporary adult mosquito control is almost exclusively based on indoor application of chemical insecticides …

Potential Of Oecophylla Longinoda (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) For Management Of Helopeltis Spp. (Hemiptera: Miridae) And Pseudotheraptus Wayi (Hemiptera: Coreidae) In Cashew In Tanzania, Moses Iwatasia Olotu Jan 2012

Potential Of Oecophylla Longinoda (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) For Management Of Helopeltis Spp. (Hemiptera: Miridae) And Pseudotheraptus Wayi (Hemiptera: Coreidae) In Cashew In Tanzania, Moses Iwatasia Olotu

All PhD Dissertations

Cashew, Anacardium occidentale Linnaeus, is an economically important cash crop for more than 300,000 rural households in Tanzania. Its production is, however, severely constrained by infestation by sap-sucking insects such as Helopeltis anacardii Miller, H. Schoutedeni Reuter and Pseudotheraptus wayi Brown. The African weaver ant (AWA), Oecophylla longinoda Latreille, is an effective biocontrol agent of hemipteran pests in coconuts in Tanzania; but its efficacy for the control of sap-sucking insects, especially Helopeltis spp. and P. wayi, has not been investigated so far in cashew crops in Tanzania. Field trials were carried out at the Coast region of Tanzania to evaluate …

Relative Abundance Of The Wild Silkmoth, Argema Mimosae Boisduval On Different Host Plants And Host Selection Behaviour Of Parasitoids, At Arabuko Sokoke Forest, Bonface Ngoka

All PhD Dissertations

Sustainable utilization of natural resources and biodiversity conservation form the basis of the livelihood and existence of communities living in Africa and in other developing countries. Overexploitation of natural resources and forest destruction for better livelihood by local communities has led to decline in the African biodiversity. Beneficial insects like wild silkmoths exist in the eco-system, and can be integrated in biodiversity conservation and income generating micro enterprises. Hence, there is need to conserve wild silkmoths and increase their distribution for their economic use in silk industry. The general purpose of this study was to survey the relative abundance of …

A Racial Impact Analysis Of Hb 462, Grace E. Harris Leadership Institute, Virginia Commonwealth University, Daphne Bryan, William Randolph, Tarvaris Mccoy

L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs Publications

The adoption of House Bill 462 into law brings forth questions about the probable impact on the physical, mental, emotional and financial well-being of the women in Virginia. In particular, analysis of its effect on the minority and underserved female population is required. Understanding the origin of this new legislation and the thinking behind its proposal and subsequent adoption dictates an endeavor into the backgrounds and intended goals of its sponsors and supporters. Proponents of HB 462 were unresponsive to requests for an interview to expound on their perspective about the importance of the legislation. This precipitated the use of …

One State Or Two In Israel/Palestine: The Stress On Gender And Citizenship, Gordon Babst, Nicole M. Tellier Jan 2012

One State Or Two In Israel/Palestine: The Stress On Gender And Citizenship, Gordon Babst, Nicole M. Tellier

Political Science Faculty Articles and Research

As is the case with any of the three great Abrahamic religions, there is considerable ambiguity regarding the status and role of women both within doctrinal interpretations, and between religious and other cultural traditions in the community. These ambiguities are reflected in political practice and condition women's aspirations regarding what is possible for them to achieve. Nowhere is it more true that understandings of religious imperatives permeate politics and work to make other lines of division all the more intractable than in Israel/Palestine. The proclivity to violence between the two peoples not only victimizes women, but foreshortens attention to their …

Preferred Configurations Of Peptide-Peptide Interactions, U. Adhikari, Steve Scheiner Jan 2012

Preferred Configurations Of Peptide-Peptide Interactions, U. Adhikari, Steve Scheiner

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

The natural and fundamental proclivities of interaction between a pair of peptide units are examined using high-level ab initio calculations. The NH···O H-bonded structure is found to be the most stable configuration of the N-methylacetamide (NMA) model dimer, but only slightly more so than a stacked arrangement. The H-bonded geometry is destabilized by only a small amount if the NH group is lifted out of the plane of the proton-accepting amide. This out-of-plane motion is facilitated by a stabilizing charge transfer from the CO π bond to the NH σ* antibonding orbital. The parallel and antiparallel stacked dimers are nearly …

Notes On The Diet Of The Malay Civet (Viverra Tangalunga) And Other Civets In Logged And Unlogged Lowland Dipterocarp Rain Forests In Sabah, Borneo, Christina P. Colon, John B. Sugau

Publications and Research

Civet diets were examined in a logged and unlogged Bornean rain forest. Malay civets (Viverra tangalunga) consumed invertebrates, fruit, rodents, insectivores, birds, snakes and lizards, and appear to show preference for centipedes and scorpions. Other civet species consumed fruit, such as figs, Connarus sp. and Annona sp., particularly in the unlogged forest, but also consumed invertebrates and vertebrates. Reduced fruit consumption observed in the logged forest may be due to lower availability and may be offset by increased consumption of invertebrates. The increased overlap in diet between Malay civets and other civets in disturbed areas may lead to …

An Eccentric Intervention Of The Flexor-Pronator Mass To Impact Overhead Throwing Distance And Velocity, Ricker Stanton Adkins

Online Theses and Dissertations

This study focused on the pronator-flexor mass of the elbow and its role in the overhead throwing motion. This specific muscle group is responsible for primary pronation and flexion at the elbow joint, while also reducing valgus stress from compromising the ulnar collateral ligament.

Twenty-three participants were put through a short throwing progression that was focused on their velocity and overall distance thrown from a standing position. After baseline testing was completed participants underwent a short intervention to determine if the intervention would impact all dependent variables. Experimental and non-experimental groups were compared using a repeated measures ANOVA which found …

One Christian's Perspective On Creation And Evolution, William W. Cobern Jan 2012

One Christian's Perspective On Creation And Evolution, William W. Cobern

Scientific Literacy and Cultural Studies Project

As a graduate student I took a course on FORTRAN, a widely used computer programming language. The author, with an obvious sense for the humorous, began his text with this epigram: “On no! Just what the world needs, another book on FORTRAN.” I begin my essay with a similar bemused foreboding, posing the question: “Do we really need yet one more essay on the evolution/creation controversy?” Who knows? But I do think that my own students and perhaps others will benefit from a discussion focused directly on the most difficult Biblical issues and that comes from a person within the …

Do You Feel Left Out Of Your Family?: An Examination Of Family Communication Patterns And Ostracism, Anna F. Carmon, Joan R. Poulsen Jan 2012

Do You Feel Left Out Of Your Family?: An Examination Of Family Communication Patterns And Ostracism, Anna F. Carmon, Joan R. Poulsen

Iowa Journal of Communication

Familial bonds have the potential to satisfy our need for human relationships, but they are also likely to cause us to be both victims and sources of ostracism. Feelings of ostracism likely stem from communicative experiences and may extend to perceptions of family satisfaction. It would seem ostracism mediates the relationship between family communication patterns and family satisfaction. Although the current study did not confirm the proposed model of ostracism, an alternative model is discussed. Further, individuals who are married and have children perceive less ostracism in their families than individuals who are in single and do not have children.

Urban Ecosystem Services: Tree Diversity And Stability Of Tropospheric Ozone Removal, Fausto Manes, Guido Incerti, Elisabetta Salvatori, Marcello Vitale, Carlo Ricotta, Robert Costanza

Institute for Sustainable Solutions Publications and Presentations

Urban forests provide important ecosystem services, such as urban air quality improvement by removing pollutants. While robust evidence exists that plant physiology, abundance, and distribution within cities are basic parameters affecting the magnitude and efficiency of air pollution removal, little is known about effects of plant diversity on the stability of this ecosystem service. Here, by means of a spatial analysis integrating system dynamic modeling and geostatistics, we assessed the effects of tree diversity on the removal of tropospheric ozone (O3) in Rome, Italy, in two years (2003 and 2004) that were very different for climatic conditions and ozone levels. …
