Epigenetics And Obesity: A Multi-Disciplinary Approach To Research And Treatment, Constance A. Ohlinger
Honors Thesis Collection
Epigenetics is an up and coming field that investigates heritable changes in gene expression that are a result of our environment and, in many cases, our lifestyle and culture. In an effort to look at the current obesity epidemic from multiple disciplines, this thesis encompassed both a biological and an anthropological study. The biological aim was to investigate a possible correlation between lifestyle and the expression of genes related to obesity. The anthropological aim was to investigate mechanisms of lifestyle change and social understandings of epigenetic phenomena. The project resulted in a refined protocol for future multi-disciplinary research into obesity …

The Writing Center: Reports
During the 2011-2012 academic year, The Writing Center, an Office for Student Success department, implemented programming specifically to address the University of Montana’s identified Strategic Issues and objectives. In doing so, The Writing Center (TWC) marshaled its resources to support students, faculty, and staff in their efforts to become more independent, versatile, and effective writers across the curriculum. This programming responded not only to the University’s Strategic Plan but also to growing student and faculty demand for Writing Center services. Writing Center staff engaged students in intellectual conversations, challenging students to develop as writers and thinkers who contribute to local …

Faculty And Librarian Collaboration On Problem-Based Learning, Samantha Hines, Eric H. Hines
Mansfield Library Faculty Publications
This report describes a case study using a collaborative model of problem-based learning in library instruction as an innovative alternative to traditional methods. The authors examine the use of problem-based library instruction in three courses, including an examination of the results of the assignment students were given as part of the exercise. The authors found that the problem-based learning model increased student engagement with library resources and provided a mechanism for identifying and correcting deficiencies in students’ information literacy knowledge and skills. If a specific session of library instruction is intended to provide guidance on the use of the library …

Biochar From Agricultural Byproducts For Improved Soil Quality And Carbon Sequestration, Djaafar Rehrah
Biochar From Agricultural Byproducts For Improved Soil Quality And Carbon Sequestration, Djaafar Rehrah
Dissertations
Soil carbon sequestration has emerged as an innovative approach that may offer a low-risk and an efficient way to mitigate climate change and replenish soil fertility. In various agricultural production systems, byproducts are produced in significant amounts from crop residues such as pecan shells (PC), peanut shells (PS), and cotton gin (CG) that can be used to produce biochar and applied to agricultural soil first to sequester C and second to enhance plant growth by supplying and retaining nutrients, improving soil physical and biological properties. The objectives of this study were to (a) produce biochars from different byproducts (PC, PS, …
Do Photoperiodic Changes In Melatonin Secretion Detrimentally Affect The Female Reproductive Cycle?, Riki Szlafrok
Do Photoperiodic Changes In Melatonin Secretion Detrimentally Affect The Female Reproductive Cycle?, Riki Szlafrok
The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences
Melatonin, better known as "the hormone of darkness," is secreted by the pineal gland during the night and helps us fall asleep. Because its internal regulation depends on light, melatonin is part of chronobiology, the study of biological mechanisms and their adaptations to lunar and solar related rhythms (Klein et al. 1991). Therefore, photoperiod changes greatly impact melatonin concentration, influencing changes in neuronal and hormonal mechanisms of the photo neuro-endocrine systems, namely reproduction. Research has shown that a disruption in the circadian rhythm of melatonin due to photoperiod changes detrimentally affects the rhythmic function of the female reproductive cycle. Research …

Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications
Z-Guggulsterone is a major ingredient in the Indian traditional hypolipidemic remedy guggul. A study in mice has established that its hypolipidemic effect involves the farnesoid X receptor (FXR), presumably by acting as an antagonist of this receptor. It is generally assumed that the antagonism leads to induction of cytochrome P450 7A1 (CYP7A1), the rate-limiting enzyme converting free cholesterol to bile acids. In this study, we tested whether Z-guggulsterone indeed induces human CYP7A1. In addition, the expression of cholesteryl ester hydrolase CES1 and bile salt export pump (BSEP) was monitored. Contrary to the general assumption, Z-guggulsterone did not induce CYP7A1. Instead, …

A series of copper complexes were synthesized from benzo[d][1,3]dioxole-5-carbaldehyde (piperonal) thiosemicarbazones (RHpTSC where R = H, CH3, C2H5 or C6H5 (Ph)). The complexes show interesting variations in geometry depending on the thiosemicarbazone; a dinuclear complex [Cu(HpTSC)Cl]2, a mononuclear complex [Cu(RHpTSC)2Cl2] (R = CH3 or C2H5) and another mononuclear complex [Cu(PhHpTSC)(PhpTSC)Cl] was generated. The complexes bind in a moderately strong fashion to DNA with binding constants on the order of 104 M− 1. They are also strong binders of human serum albumin with binding constants near 104 M− 1. The complexes show good in vitro …

A survey was conducted from May to Oct of 2011 of the parasitoid community of the imported cabbageworm, Pieris rapae (Lepidoptera: Pieridae), in cole crops in part of the eastern United States and southeastern Canada. The findings of our survey indicate that Cotesia rubecula (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) now occurs as far west as North Dakota and has become the dominant parasitoid of P. rapae in the northeastern and north central United States and adjacent parts of southeastern Canada, where it has displaced the previously common parasitoid Cotesia glomerata (Hymenoptera: Braconidae). Cotesia glomerata remains the dominant parasitoid in the mid-Atlantic states, from …

Kaempferol Nanoparticles Achieve Strong And Selective Inhibition Of Ovarian Cancer Cell Viability, Haitao Luo, Bingbing Jiang, Bingyun Li, Zhaoliang Li, Bing-Hua Jiang, Yi C. Chen
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
Ovarian cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer death for women throughout the Western world. Kaempferol, a natural flavonoid, has shown promise in the chemoprevention of ovarian cancer. A common concern about using dietary supplements for chemoprevention is their bioavailability. Nanoparticles have shown promise in increasing the bioavailability of some chemicals. Here we developed five different types of nanoparticles incorporating kaempferol and tested their efficacy in the inhibition of viability of cancerous and normal ovarian cells. We found that positively charged nanoparticle formulations did not lead to a significant reduction in cancer cell viability, whereas nonionic polymeric nanoparticles …

Is The Reincarnation Hypothesis Advanced By Stevenson For Spontaneous Past-Life Experiences Relevant For The Understanding Of The Ontology Of Past-Life Phenomena?, Sergei Slavoutski
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
A significant volume of scientific evidence, uncovered by reincarnation research in the last
50 years, supports the reincarnation hypothesis advanced by Ian Stevenson for spontaneous
past-life experiences (PLEs). However, at this time this evidence cannot provide an
unquestionable proof of the existence of past-life phenomena, nor can it assert that
reincarnation is not possible. This paper suggests that the reincarnation hypothesis, being
reasonably parsimonious and relatively exhaustive, may provide a plausible explanation for
spontaneous PLEs. Also, based on the probability of the same ontology of spontaneous and
hypnotic PLEs, it may be argued that this hypothesis might also be relevant …

Student And Teacher Perceptions Of Teacher Immediacy Behaviors And The Influence Of Teacher Immediacy Behaviors On Student Motivation To Learn Science, Vania Littlejohn
Education Dissertations and Projects
The National Assessment on Educational Progress signals that American students are not being adequately prepared to compete globally in an ever changing scientific society. As a result, legislation mandated that all students be assessed and show proficiency in scientific literacy beginning in Grade 4 with the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 2002 also known as No Child Left Behind. Research indicates a disturbing decline in the number of U.S. students pursuing more rigorous science courses in high school, majoring in scientific areas in college, and choosing future careers in science. With a need to improve science …
The Relationship Of Learner-Centered Beliefs Of North Carolina Virtual Public School (Ncvps) Teachers And Student Achievement On The North Carolina End-Of-Course Assessments, Eddy R. Malave
Education Dissertations and Projects
Current federal, state, and district mandates charge educators with reform efforts to improve student achievement. Efforts to transform the educational system are facing enormous public pressure to improve. Despite increasing support for learner-centered perspectives, approaches that focus on learners and learning are often based on conflicting assumptions about what is needed for learners to achieve desired learning standards and outcomes (McCombs & Whisler, 1997). Such approaches have a big impact on what teachers believe and a subsequent influence on student outcomes. This study attempted to establish teacher beliefs and their effectiveness on student achievement on the North Carolina EOC assessments. …
Methodological Modes: Instructional Practice And 21 St Century Engagement In Secondary English Classrooms, Laurel Eury Naughton
Methodological Modes: Instructional Practice And 21 St Century Engagement In Secondary English Classrooms, Laurel Eury Naughton
Education Dissertations and Projects
This dissertation was designed to provide insight into the teaching practices of secondary English teachers. Current learners are in classrooms in which the instructional practices or methodologies are employed, but may not be engaging students. Information sought included the degree to which 21 st century practices were being incorporated into the lessons, and the level with which students were engaging with the material.
The researcher observed classrooms of junior and senior English, and measured the level of engagement triangulating the data from the local school agency's observation tool with that of Van Amburgh et al.'s (2007) active learning inventory tool …

Phylogenetic Search Through Partial Tree Mixing., Kenneth Sundberg, Mark Clement, Quinn Snell, Dan Ventura, Michael Whiting, Keith Crandall
Computational Biology Institute
BACKGROUND: Recent advances in sequencing technology have created large data sets upon which phylogenetic inference can be performed. Current research is limited by the prohibitive time necessary to perform tree search on a reasonable number of individuals. This research develops new phylogenetic algorithms that can operate on tens of thousands of species in a reasonable amount of time through several innovative search techniques.
RESULTS: When compared to popular phylogenetic search algorithms, better trees are found much more quickly for large data sets. These algorithms are incorporated in the PSODA application available at http://dna.cs.byu.edu/psoda
CONCLUSIONS: The use of Partial Tree Mixing …
Holocene Landscape Evolution Of The Ohio River Valley From Knob Creek To Rosewood Bottom, Rego Kathryn De
Holocene Landscape Evolution Of The Ohio River Valley From Knob Creek To Rosewood Bottom, Rego Kathryn De
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Rivers and floodplain environments have provided human settlements with resources for thousands of years. By understanding how rivers shape the land around them, we can use landforms to reconstruct ancient fluvial processes and to examine how they have conditioned the way humans interact with their environment. This study investigates the Lower Ohio River during the Holocene. During this period, Midwestern landscapes were adjusting to a variety of processes, including millennial-scale climate change involving the transition from a glacial to an interglacial environment. At the same time, Archaic hunter-gatherers adopted a settlement strategy that favored large river valleys. The cause of …
