The Compass: Earth Science Journal of Sigma Gamma Epsilon

On April 17, 2005, delegates at the 39th Biennial Convention of the Society of Sigma Gamma Epsilon passed a motion to include Mary Anning as one of the guiding pillars of geology in the Ritual of the Society. Mary Anning, of Lyme Regis, England, was a 19th century collector of fossils who made significant contributions to the growth of British palaeontology. Among her finds was one of the most complete specimens of Ichthyosaurs found in Britain, as well as the discovery of the first British Plesiosaurus and Dimorphodon (pterosaur). Mary Anning also discovered the true nature of coprolites. …

Background: Vaccines are the most effective public health intervention. Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) provides routine vaccination in developing countries. However, vaccines that cannot be given in EPI schedule such as typhoid fever vaccine need alternative venues. In areas where school enrolment is high, schools provide a cost effective opportunity for vaccination. Prior to start of a school-based typhoid vaccination program, interviews were conducted with staff of educational institutions in two townships of Karachi, Pakistan to collect baseline information about the school system and to plan a typhoid vaccination program. Data collection teams administered a structured questionnaire to all schools …

Gridlock On The Road To Renewable Energy Development: A Discussion About The Opportunities & Risks Presented By The Modernization Requirements Of The Electricity Transmission Network, Kelsey Jae Nunez

The Journal of Business, Entrepreneurship & the Law

In November 2006, the American Council On Renewable Energy (“ACORE”), along with the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Caucuses of the United States Senate and House of Representatives, convened the national policy conference, “Renewable Energy in America: Phase II Market Forecasts and Policy Requirements” (“Phase II”). Several speakers at Phase II argued that continued private sector financing of renewable energy projects will substantially depend on the expansion of the electrical transmission network. The argument follows this logic: developing renewable energy to the point that it can power America's growing energy needs will require substantial investment from private sector investors. These …

The "Evolving Written Description Doctrine" And The Search For Specificity (A.K.A. Adequacy Is The Matter Of Invention.), Gerald R. Prettyman Jr.

The Journal of Business, Entrepreneurship & the Law

In 1996, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Markman that claim construction was a matter of law for the judge to decide. There was hope in the patent bar that Markman would bring uniformity to claim construction and a reduction to the lengthy process of patent litigation. Some authors report instead that the claim construction reversal rate is increasing. Other authors question the consistency of the rulings from the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. Circuit Judge Rader of the Federal Circuit recently named this controversy the “Evolving Written Description Doctrine.” Behind this controversy primarily lies judicial interpretation of …

Metal Complexes Of Non-Heme Ligands: Biological Applications, Jai Prakash Jan 2012

Metal Complexes Of Non-Heme Ligands: Biological Applications, Jai Prakash

Wayne State University Dissertations

Oxidative inactivation of proteins (carbonic anhydrase–I, trypsin, chymotrypsin and 20S proteasome) by non–heme iron complexes, and glutathionylation of non–heme cobalt complexes mimicking the N5 coordination environment like that of biologically important cofactor cobalamin or B12 (Cbl) are reported. Different non–heme ligand sets or inhibitors were used to inactivate different proteins. Carbonic anhydrase–I (CA–I) and 20S proteasome were inactivated by iron complexes in the presence of O2 and a reductant (DTT), consistent with a pathway involving the reductive activation of O2, whereas serine proteases trypsin and chymotrypsin were inactivated by ferryls (single turnover), and by an iron …

In order to study oxidative stress in peripheral cells of Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients, immortalized lymphocytes derived from two peculiar cohorts of patients, referring to early onset AD (EOSAD) and subjects harboured AD related mutation (ADmut), were used. Oxidative stress was evaluated measuring i) the typical oxidative markers, such as HNE Michel adducts, 3 Nitro-Tyrosine residues and protein carbonyl on protein extracts, ii) and the antioxidant capacity, following the enzymatic kinetic of superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and glutathione reductase (GRD). We found that the signs of oxidative stress, measured as oxidative marker levels, were evident only in ADmut …

The Effect Of Nest Relocation And Beach Renourishment On The Loggerhead Sea Turtle (Caretta Caretta) In Pinellas County, Florida, Lauren Dellert Jan 2012

The Effect Of Nest Relocation And Beach Renourishment On The Loggerhead Sea Turtle (Caretta Caretta) In Pinellas County, Florida, Lauren Dellert

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

Loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) have major nesting sites along the protected shores of the southeastern United States, an area where the species are listed as either endangered or threatened. In this study, the effects of beach renourishment and nest relocation on the rate of emergence of Loggerhead sea turtle hatchlings from their nests. The study location was the beaches of Pinellas County, Florida; the study period was five years, 2006 through 2010. Because beach renourishment can be environmentally detrimental for sessile organisms such as sponges and coral, we hypothesized that beach renourishment would negatively affect hatchling success of the …

Claiming Nanotechnology: Improving Uspto Efforts At Classification Of Emerging Nano-Enabled Pharmaceutical Technologies, Jordan Paradise

Northwestern Journal of Technology and Intellectual Property

A constant theme weaving through the history of science, technology, and medicine is that the law consistently lags behind innovation. By the time we understand the science and technology involved, there is already another more advanced and complex product in the pipeline or entering the market. One area where this is proving particularly acute is nanotechnology. Nanotechnology and nanoscience have facilitated breakthroughs in the pharmaceutical and medical device realms, enabling cutting-edge treatments. Not surprisingly, innovations at the intersection of nanotechnology and medicine have inundated the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) with patent applications.

The USPTO has implemented a …

Nanomaterials And Cellular Interaction In The Nervous System, Caleb Joseph Pingel Jan 2012

Nanomaterials And Cellular Interaction In The Nervous System, Caleb Joseph Pingel

Student Theses and Dissertations

Nanoparticles (NPs), materials fabricated in nanosize, are being increasingly used due to their unique applications. The potential risks from inhaling NPs and the interaction of inhaled NPs with the peripheral nervous system in rat were determined in this study by investigating 1) retrograde transport of inhaled NP's to the Nodose Ganglion (NDG) neurons, 2) NDG neuronal interaction with NPs in vitro, and 3) the fluid kinetics of NPs in cell sustaining media. Intratracheal intubation and instilling fluorescent NPs with and without a tracer dye (SP-DiOC) showed that NPS were transported from nerve endings in airway to neurons. Exposing NDG neurons …

Quantitative Genetic Methods To Dissect Heterogeneity In Complex Traits, T. Bernard Bigdeli Jan 2012

Quantitative Genetic Methods To Dissect Heterogeneity In Complex Traits, T. Bernard Bigdeli

Theses and Dissertations

Etiological models of complex disease are elusive[46, 33, 9], as are consistently replicable findings for major genetic susceptibility loci[54, 14, 15, 24]. Commonly-cited explanations invoke low-frequency genomic variation[41], allelic heterogeneity at susceptibility loci[33, 30], variable etiological trajectories[18, 17], and epistatic effects between multiple loci; these represent among the most methodologically-challenging issues in molecular genetic studies of complex traits. The response has been con- sistently reactionary—hypotheses regarding the relative contributions of known func- tional elements, or emphasizing a greater role of rare variation[46, 33] have undergone periodic revision, driving increasingly collaborative efforts to ascertain greater numbers of participants and which assay …

Interaction Of Ultrashort-Laser Pulses With Induced Undercritical Plasmas In Fused Silica, Jeremy R. Gulley, Sebastian W. Winkler, William M. Dennis, Carl M. Liebig, Razvan Stoian

Faculty Articles

Ultrafast light-material interactions near the damage threshold are often studied using postmortem analysis of damaged dielectric materials. Corresponding simulations of ultrashort pulse propagation through the material are frequently used to gain additional insight into the processes leading to such damage. However, comparison between such experimental and numerical results is often qualitative, and pulses near to but not exceeding the damage threshold leave no permanent changes in the material for postmortem analysis. In this article, a series of experiments is presented that measures the near- and far-field properties of a 140-fs laser pulse after propagation through a fused silica sample in …

Incorporating Quantitative Reasoning In Common Core Courses: Mathematics For The Ghost Map, John R. Jungck Jan 2012

Incorporating Quantitative Reasoning In Common Core Courses: Mathematics For The Ghost Map, John R. Jungck

Numeracy

How can mathematics be integrated into multi-section interdisciplinary courses to enhance thematic understandings and shared common readings? As an example, four forms of quantitative reasoning are used to understand and critique one such common reading: Steven Berlin Johnson’s "The Ghost Map: The Story of London's Most Terrifying Epidemic - and How it Changed Science, Cities and the Modern World" (Riverhead Books, 2006). Geometry, statistics, modeling, and networks are featured in this essay as the means of depicting, understanding, elaborating, and critiquing the public health issues raised in Johnson’s book. Specific pedagogical examples and resources are included to illustrate applications and …

Motivation For Achievement And Attitudes Toward Mathematics Instruction In A Required Calculus Course At The Norwegian University Of Science And Technology, Donna Sundre, Carol Barry, Vidar Gynnild, Erin Tangen Ostgard

Numeracy

This study from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) examines students’ learning goals and attitudes toward mathematics in a first-year calculus course in undergraduate engineering education. Achievement motivation research using the Achievement Goal Questionnaire (AGQ) is advanced from current literature with two additions: (1) a course specific context using introductory college calculus students, and (2) participation of Norwegian students.

Pre- and posttest measures of attitudes indicate that students do change learning goals over time, unfortunately opposite to the instructors’ aspirations. A significant increase in “Mastery Avoidance” and “Work Avoidance” was accompanied with a drop in “Mastery Approach” and …

Quantitative Literacy Interventions At University Of Cape Town: Effects Of Separation From Academic Disciplines, Vera Frith

Numeracy

The aim of the Numeracy Centre at the University of Cape Town is to develop students’ quantitative literacy (QL) in a manner consistent with their programmes of study and intended roles in the community. Our theoretical perspective on the nature of QL is in line with that of the New Literacies Studies and sees academic QL as practices in different academic disciplinary contexts. This means that for us the ideal curriculum structure for developing QL would fully integrate it into the teaching of the disciplines. This is in practice not achievable in most cases, especially since many students do not …

Perioperative Experience Of Adolescents, Janean Carter Monahan Jan 2012

Perioperative Experience Of Adolescents, Janean Carter Monahan

Wayne State University Dissertations

Research has shown that preoperative stress is associated with poorer health outcomes in adults and young children, but there is little in the literature about the stress experienced by adolescents. Clinical experience, however, has shown that adolescents behave differently throughout the perioperative experience than either adults or children. For example, common behaviors of adolescent's emerging from anesthesia include combativeness, thrashing, and crying. To promote adolescent health and to provide adolescents with appropriate interventions that will support a positive surgical outcome, research is needed to discover the perceptions and meanings adolescents attribute to the perioperative experience.

The purpose of this hermeneutic …

Hiv-1 Tat Triggers Nuclear Localization Of Zo-1 Via Rho Signaling And Camp Response Element-Binding Protein Activation, Yu Zhong, Bei Zhang, Sung Yong Eum, Michal Toborek

Neurosurgery Faculty Publications

The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-specific protein trans-activator of transcription (Tat) can contribute to the dysfunction of brain endothelial cells and HIV trafficking into the brain by disrupting tight junction (TJ) integrity at the blood–brain barrier (BBB) level. Specific TJ proteins, such as zonula occludens (ZO) proteins, localize not only at the cell–cell borders but are also present in the nuclei. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the mechanisms and significance of Tat-induced nuclear localization of ZO-1. Treatment of a brain endothelial cell line (hCMEC/D3 cells) with Tat resulted in a decrease in total levels of ZO-1 but …

Α−Α Cross-Links Increase Fibrin Fiber Elasticity And Stiffness, Christine C. Helms, Robert A.S. Ariens, S. Uitte De Willige, Kristina F. Standeven, Martin Guthold

Physics Faculty Publications

Fibrin fibers, which are ∼100 nm in diameter, are the major structural component of a blood clot. The mechanical properties of single fibrin fibers determine the behavior of a blood clot and, thus, have a critical influence on heart attacks, strokes, and embolisms. Cross-linking is thought to fortify blood clots; though, the role of α–α cross-links in fibrin fiber assembly and their effect on the mechanical properties of single fibrin fibers are poorly understood. To address this knowledge gap, we used a combined fluorescence and atomic force microscope technique to determine the stiffness (modulus), extensibility, and elasticity of …
