Between Floors: The Ups And Downs Of Mediated Narrative, Melinda White Nov 2012

Between Floors: The Ups And Downs Of Mediated Narrative, Melinda White

Theses and Dissertations

“Between Floors: The Ups and Downs of Mediated Narrative” and the accompanying creative remediation project, “Between Floors: Love and Other Blood Related Diseases,” meld theory and practice of print with electronic literature and installation art. I argue that as the medium changes, the narrative is transformed. The narrative can be reconstructed and pieced together as the reader or viewer becomes increasingly involved, even embodied within the work. This embodiment is what Nathaniel Stern calls “Moving and thinking and feeling” (1) and can result in a more direct emotional experience. The form, structure, and medium (sjužet) rely on authorial intention, yet …

Digital Media's Transformative Role In Education: Beyond Potential To Essential, Ming-Tso Chien Nov 2012

Digital Media's Transformative Role In Education: Beyond Potential To Essential, Ming-Tso Chien

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Achieving effective learning via digital media continues to be a major concern in contemporary education. The daily use of all forms of digital media is part of our lives and therefore becomes a key component of education. Educators must consider the process of digital media curriculum as a learning model and form of experience adapted to education. This means the significance is on how to learn as well as what to learn. This study demonstrated how the implementation of digital media curriculum via the Scratch game-making project contributed to middle school students' interaction with the entire educational process. The goal …

Getting Attention For A Ceramic Art Exhibition: A Case Study Of A Nonprofit’S Promotional Campaign, Steven Bodnar

Theses

A participant-observation case study of a promotional campaign developed and implemented for a temporary, nonprofit ceramic art exhibition. The subject is introduced through a review of both theoretical and practical research examples centered on marketing and public relations for arts and cultural attractions. The present study offers a descriptive and evaluative analysis of the campaign's promotional strategies and tactics. Strategies discussed include promotional objectives, prospective audiences, assessment of available resources, and scheduling and implementation. The tactics include direct mail and email delivery of press releases, promotional materials, and the use of social media. Findings demonstrate that publicity generated primarily was …

Good Work! Incorporating Service Learning Into Graphic Design Curriculum, Anne Beekman Oct 2012

Good Work! Incorporating Service Learning Into Graphic Design Curriculum, Anne Beekman

Mid-America College Art Association Conference 2012

This paper discusses the benefits and challenges of using Service Learning in graphic design classes at introductory through advanced levels in undergraduate programs. Tips on planning, logistics and privacy issues when working with non-profit agencies will be addressed. With increasingly criticism of unpaid internships, students doing Pro-Bono work within a structured curriculum gain portfolio pieces while giving back to their community. Students create high-quality artwork that fulfills communication needs while learning professional and business practices. This includes interacting with clients throughout the design process, dealing with budgets, vendors, and legal issues. Assignment briefs for in-class projects include detailed lesson plans …

Show Me The Semiosis: Grounding Post Structural Theory In Physiological Experience, Michael T. Arrigo Oct 2012

Show Me The Semiosis: Grounding Post Structural Theory In Physiological Experience, Michael T. Arrigo

Mid-America College Art Association Conference 2012 Digital Publications

Most of my art students experience a very down to earth epistemological relationship to the world. There is what there is. Middle America is a land of dualisms: matter and spirit, mind and body, good and evil. In this uncluttered black and white world, post-structural theory seemingly has little to offer but a range of unnecessary and unattractive grays. This presentation describes how I overcome my students’ resistance to intellectualizing perception and art making. I use a physiological perspective that grounds students’ investigation of art and meaning in an investigation of themselves, their bodies, their perceptual responses, emotional reactions and …

Warehouse Redesign, Cristine Carmel Dewar Oct 2012

Warehouse Redesign, Cristine Carmel Dewar

Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering

A young, growing biomedical company is expanding its warehouse space to keep up with the increasing production. This project’s goals were to recommend a layout and improve a process that would minimize the distance traveled by the material handlers, increase the safety of the warehouse by implementing visual controls, implement ergonomics to reduce chance of injury, and save money for the company. To achieve this first I familiarized myself with their current processes and department and the space required for their current and future production levels. Next I created two alternative layouts, the first (Layout A) to minimize distance and …

Simple, Sustainable Living: An Illustrated Journal, Jenn Livermore Oct 2012

Simple, Sustainable Living: An Illustrated Journal, Jenn Livermore

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

As we are faced with the gravity of climate change, fundamental lifestyle changes need to occur in order to achieve a sustainable future. The purpose of my creative project was to create an illustrated journal that promotes simple and sustainable living in Melbourne. This paper describes the process undertaken to complete this project. Initially, I discuss the power of art in transitioning to a post-growth society and the benefits of using an illustrated journal as an artistic medium. I also outline the background of the voluntary simplicity movement. In my Methods section, I discuss why Melbourne was a perfect location …
