Credibility On Cable News: An Examination Of The Factors That Establish Credibility In Newscasters, Jonathan Mertel Mar 2012

Credibility On Cable News: An Examination Of The Factors That Establish Credibility In Newscasters, Jonathan Mertel

Theses

This study investigates the factors that contribute to and hinder a cable newscaster's establishment of credibility with their audiences. Considerations were made for political factors, exposure to newscasters, para-social relationship strength and visual credibility. A survey was administered online that obtained a sample of 139 participants. Findings suggest that audience members reporting high levels of exposure to newscasters tended to have higher credibility perceptions. The ability to recognize a newscaster was not a significant indicator of credibility perceptions. Newscasters that were perceived to have liberal political views tended to be perceived as more credible than those perceived as having more …

Prove It! Me Report Pretty One Day., Erika Bennett, Sam Friedman

Library Technology Conference

Many luminaries argue that the library’s value is intangible, but that answer is unacceptable in today’s climate. The economy is tough. Budgets are tight. Meanwhile, all kinds of invested parties want you to prove that you are worth their money. And they want that proof in easily digestible numbers and graphs. Bottom line: organizations that show their value get funded.

This is a scary prospect for many librarians. Much like information research, data visualization is a complex process with a lot of interconnected steps. Luckily, librarians are already naturally attuned to data competencies such as analytical thinking, organizing and evidence-building. …

Media Revolution: Early Prints From The Sheldon Museum Of Art, Gregory Nosan, Alison G. Stewart

Zea E-Books Collection

In the digital age, when videos are streamed and books can be read electronically, it is hard to fathom the revolutionary impact that printed images had when they first appeared in Europe around 1400. Their introduction changed forever the traditional practice of manually crafting images one by one, creating a world in which pictures could be reproduced almost without limit on a new material called paper, expanding the possibilities and audiences for images and texts of all kinds. This publication, which brings to light little-seen masterpieces from the Sheldon Museum of Art’s collection, explores the three major print techniques of …

Safety Hazard Analysis And Corrective Measures For Koot Dairy, Billy Koot Mar 2012

Safety Hazard Analysis And Corrective Measures For Koot Dairy, Billy Koot

Dairy Science

The objective of the study was to determine any potential safety hazards at Koot Dairy in order to prevent injuries and lawsuits. A hazard walkthrough was performed with employees to help discover hazards and determine the correctible actions that must take place. A farm safety checklist was used to assess some of the most common dairy hazards and to ensure law compliance. The checklist included many potential areas of hazard—first aid and emergency, power and electrical, farm equipment and machinery, farm chemicals, fuel tanks, confined spaces, environment, and workplace policies. After implementing the checklist, it was clear as to what …

A Review By Karen Mitchell And Bettina Fabos Of Professing To Learn: Creating Tenured Lives And Careers In The American Research University, By Anna Neumann, Karen Mitchell, Bettina Fabos

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker’s plan to solve budget problems by dramatically cutting public education funding has once again sparked heated debate over the figurative and literal “value” of education. As other state governments consider similar proposals, educators feel increased pressure to justify how they go about the important job of teaching. Never before has research on academics been more important, especially in higher education where so little is publicly known about what professors do in their day to day profession. This is true of all ranks of professors within academia, but perhaps most critically of professors with tenure. In Professing …

Embedding Service Design: The Long And The Short Of It: Developing An Organisationand#8217;S Design Capacity And Capability To Sustainably Deliver Services, Stuart G. Bailey

ServDes Conference Series

What are the factors affecting how service design methods and practices are embedded within an organisation? How can embedding of design methods be done sustainably; providing lasting benefits? Over a four-year period; the author observed and studied a large public sector organisation as it developed in-house service design capabilities and strove to embed design thinking and processes within its business culture and working practices. The conditions necessary to enable innovation to take place within an organisation are not so dissimilar to those observed for embedding design; and for enabling design to be used effectively in the development and delivery of …

Graven Images, Amish Aesthetics, And The "Affirmative Lie", Laura Fair-Schulz Feb 2012

Graven Images, Amish Aesthetics, And The "Affirmative Lie", Laura Fair-Schulz

Swiss American Historical Society Review

"Can I take your picture?" The answer was obvious, but it was a plumb opportunity to observe how the question would be received, Mr. Yoder merely replied, displaying a typical posture- of humility -practiced among the Amish (head slightly bowed but cocked sideways to maintain eye contact): "...we wouldn't appreciate that." There was nothing angry in his voice, denouncing the "worldliness" of the question, but a soft, rehearsed and purposeful tone.

Can Design Thinking Have A Social Life Through Networking?, Brenda Duggan Feb 2012

Can Design Thinking Have A Social Life Through Networking?, Brenda Duggan

Articles

‘The design process is best described metaphorically as a system of spaces rather than a predefined series of orderly steps. The steps demarcate different sorts of related activities that together form a continuum of innovation’. (Brown, 2008, 4) This paper addresses two different spaces for examining design thinking — the design research notebook and the digital space, the topic-driven blog. The premise for this paper arises from teaching digital media on a visual communication programme. I wanted to ask the question from my perspective as an educator — if the individual research notebook is a convention or vehicle for design …

Color Charm: Interactive Color Theory & Color Reflection, Chia-Huei Yen

Theses

"Choosing colors should not be a gamble. It should be a conscious decision. Colors have meaning and function." ~Verner Panton For those of us who have been blessed with the gift of sight, we are able to see various kinds of colors all around us. We are very fortunate to have this gift. However, how many people are able to recognize the value of a given color? What is the attribute that constitutes a color's hue or its saturation? All of us who have this gift can say that we enjoy the ability to see all of these colors, but …
