Student Perceptions And Use Of Multimodal And Traditional Forms Of Composition, Shawn Stowe May 2012

Student Perceptions And Use Of Multimodal And Traditional Forms Of Composition, Shawn Stowe

All Theses

Given the dynamic nature of technology and writing, it is important to understand how students view traditional and multimodal methods of composition. Traditional composition (plain text) is frequently used to complete essays, and multimodal composition (often digital, but otherwise containing multiple media elements) is often used to construct blogs and webpages. As technologies advance, there is more and more opportunity for the overlapping of composition and technology in writing practices. The objective of this study was to examine how students perceive traditional and multimodal composition in terms of their use, perceptions, and preferences. This study used surveys (quantitative) and interviews …

The Pastel Medium Communicating Sexuality And Promiscuity In Late Nineteenth-Century Paris, Adee S. Benartzy May 2012

The Pastel Medium Communicating Sexuality And Promiscuity In Late Nineteenth-Century Paris, Adee S. Benartzy

HIM 1990-2015

Throughout the history of art, the pastel medium has been considered a medium of secondary interest. Despite its pulsating textures, vibrant colors, and unique receptivity to touch, this medium has been recognized above all for its swiftness in stroke and subsequent ability of the artist to record images of fleeting moments and ideas almost instantaneously. The focus on the advantageous rapidity of the pastel, however, hindered the pastel medium's potential as a mere preliminary technique to working with grander mediums, such as oil paint, thus failing to recognize the prominence of pastel in capturing character. This research endeavor focuses on …

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

I sought to redesign and reimagine the visual materials produced by the Westcott Community Center, a nonprofit organization that serves the local Westcott area as well as the entire metropolitan Syracuse area. The Westcott Community Center is a venue for classes, dramatic performances, celebrations, community meetings, and more.

The Westcott Community Center has many diverse programs and events and is truly an asset to the community. I wanted to update their materials to convey a sense of cohesiveness as well as a more sophisticated and organized design aesthetic. I redesigned the Center’s logo and volunteer application, created a stationery system, …

The Adaptation Of 3d Video Game Production Techniques To The 2d Game Play Mechanics Of The Beat-Em-Up Genre, Donald Roeder May 2012

The Adaptation Of 3d Video Game Production Techniques To The 2d Game Play Mechanics Of The Beat-Em-Up Genre, Donald Roeder

All Theses

In this paper, we address some of the technological issues and shortcomings that led to the recession in popularity of the Beat 'em up video game genre. In particular, we adapt current technological advances and apply them to 3D video game development to mirror the mechanics of the 2D Beat 'em up genre. We describe our assembly-line approach to 3D asset production that permits quick development of multiple and varied characters and environments. Our approach to 3D camera placement provides the same viewpoint used in the 2D game approach. We have developed various scripts to streamline the animation process. In …

Ambiguous Science And The Visual Representation Of The Real, Curtis Newbold May 2012

Ambiguous Science And The Visual Representation Of The Real, Curtis Newbold

All Dissertations

The emergence of visual media as prominent and even expected forms of communication in nearly all disciplines, including those scientific, has raised new questions about how the art and science of communication epistemologically affect the interpretation of scientific phenomena. In this dissertation I explore how the influence of aesthetics in visual representations of science inevitably creates ambiguous meanings. As a means to improve visual literacy in the sciences, I call awareness to the ubiquity of visual ambiguity and its importance and relevance in scientific discourse. To do this, I conduct a literature review that spans interdisciplinary research in communication, science, …

Image-Enabled Discourse: Investigating The Creation Of Visual Information As Communicative Practice, Jaime Snyder May 2012

Image-Enabled Discourse: Investigating The Creation Of Visual Information As Communicative Practice, Jaime Snyder

School of Information Studies - Dissertations

Anyone who has clarified a thought or prompted a response during a conversation by drawing a picture has exploited the potential of image making as an interactive tool for conveying information. Images are increasingly ubiquitous in daily communication, in large part due to advances in visually enabled information and communication technologies (ICT), such as information visualization applications, image retrieval systems and visually enabled collaborative work tools. Human abilities to use images to communicate are however far more sophisticated and nuanced than these technologies currently support. In order to learn more about the practice of image making as a specialized form …

Interpreter Roles And Transition For Public School Students Who Are Deaf: A Multiple Case Study, John Hinz May 2012

Interpreter Roles And Transition For Public School Students Who Are Deaf: A Multiple Case Study, John Hinz

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This qualitative multiple case study research project examines interpreter use for students who are Deaf in the public school system and juxtaposes it with interpreter use found in the work sector after the school-to-work (STW) transition. Semi-structured interviews with 16 Deafness professionals and 6 study participants who are Deaf, as well as workplace observations yield bits of data which are coded and themed for review. Results confirm that interpreter use is abundant in public schools and scant in the work sector. Further results determine that STW placements for students who are Deaf can be haphazard, while employers are largely unaware …

Plagiarism Issues In Post-1998 Indonesian Film Posters, Ekky Imanjaya, Emanuel Pratalaharja Apr 2012

Plagiarism Issues In Post-1998 Indonesian Film Posters, Ekky Imanjaya, Emanuel Pratalaharja

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

There are online articles, with visual materials, stating that some post-1998 Indonesian film posters were accused as plagiarism by common people. However, academically speaking, it needs deeper skills and knowledge to prove acts of plagiarism. This paper will discuss the issues around Indonesian film posters and plagiarism, including the possibility of citing in graphic design. The research will treat film posters not only as marketing tools to promote the movies, as many people consider, but also as graphic design materials. Some terms such as appropriation, homage, and pastiche will be discussed to analyze the phenomenon.

Effective Poster Design, Kaylee S. White Apr 2012

Effective Poster Design, Kaylee S. White

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

It is claimed that a poster has about three seconds to catch the attention of a passer-by. The success of that poster teeters on those few seconds. If it fails to attract attention, then it is ineffective. However, if it catches the interest of its viewer, then half of the battle is won. Having caught attention, the poster must next deliver a swift, effective, convincing message, which then leads the viewer to a desired thought or action. Quite an ambitious to-do list for one poster, right? Quickly arrest the attention of the viewer, deliver a swift clear message, effectively accomplish …

Defining Industry Expectations And Misconceptions Of Art And Technology Co-Creativity, Vanessa C. Brasfield

Department of Computer Graphics Technology Degree Theses

The primary purpose of this study was to establish whether or not students and industry professionals share the same views about what students should be learning in animation education, what skills are necessary, and whether or not students graduating with a bachelor’s degree would be adequately prepared for an entry level position. To establish where misconceptions lie, surveys were issued to three groups: undergraduate students, post-graduate students, and industry professionals. These surveys were then analyzed using paired t-test for validation and question relevance, and ANOVA models to establish whether or not groups shared viewpoints. These data established significance within the …

Rethinking Captivity While Preserving The Elephant Psyche: The Renovation And Expansion Of The Elephant Exhibit At The Memphis Zoo, Mario Lashean Walker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The purpose of this thesis is to explore how the built enviornment can improve the natural, emotional and social behavior of the African Elephant species while fostering increased human interaction and empathy. The growing resistance against the capture and confinement of wild elephants by animal rights activists has prompted zoos to increase their standards for elephant confinement. The need to renovate and expand elephant habitats has become a primary concern for the zoo industry. As of March 2011, the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) has updated the standards for elephant management and care. Zoo standards for the treatment and …

The Modernity Of La Mode: A History Of The French Revolution Through The Lens Of Fashion, Culture, And Identity, Bithy R. Goodman Apr 2012

The Modernity Of La Mode: A History Of The French Revolution Through The Lens Of Fashion, Culture, And Identity, Bithy R. Goodman

Honors Theses

In my thesis, I explore the cultural history of the French Revolution and its relation to the modern era which ensued. Many historians have studied the French Revolution as it relates to culture, the rise of modernity, and fashion. I combine the unique histories of all three of these aspects to reach an understanding of the history of the French Revolution and fashion’s role in bringing about change. In the majority of literature of costume history, discussion of fashion surrounds its reflective properties. Many historians conclude fashion as a reflection of the broader cultural shifts that occurred during the Revolution. …

"I Have No Pride": William Kennedy Laurie Dickson In His Own Words - An Autobiography, Margaret Julia Hames Apr 2012

"I Have No Pride": William Kennedy Laurie Dickson In His Own Words - An Autobiography, Margaret Julia Hames

Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association

An early pioneer of cinema technology, author, photographer, and film director W.K.L. Dickson's was one of the first people to perform a new type of subjectivity that we understand as multi-media. Working in the laboratory of Thomas Alva Edison, Dickson's papers, photographs, and films have been carefully preserved as part of the Edison Papers Project and an examination of this archive rises to the level of autobiography.

Authors Wyn Wachhorst, Paul Israel, and Charles Musser help to bring to life the world of the Edison Laboratory, the world's first pure research and development company. Dickson's own work speaks across the …

What We See And Why It Matters: How Competency In Visual Literacy Can Enhance Student Learning, Anneliese Tillmann, Sumer Seiki, Faculty Advisor Apr 2012

What We See And Why It Matters: How Competency In Visual Literacy Can Enhance Student Learning, Anneliese Tillmann, Sumer Seiki, Faculty Advisor

John Wesley Powell Student Research Conference

In today's world, we use more visuals than ever before. Research suggests that the balance between words and images has shifted considerably calling for new forms of literacy (as cited in Brumberger, 2011). Visual literacy goes above and beyond the traditional concepts of reading and writing, expanding literacy to include visuals. The analysis and reveiw of current visual literacy research suggests teaching visual literacy is necessary for students to become capable of navigating the visually driven world we live in today. The research highlights the importance of present day society. Findings suggest that the ability to create images will help …
