Corporate Social Responsibility: Case Study Of Community Expectations And The Administrative Systems, Niger Delta, David Ogula

The Qualitative Report

Poor community-company relations in the Niger Delta have drawn attention to the practice of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in the region. Since the 1960s, transnational oil corporations operating in the Niger Delta have adopted various CSR strategies, yet community-company relations remain adversarial. This article examines community expectations of CSR and the influence of the traditional, political, and administrative systems on community expectations of CSR in the Niger Delta region. An overview of CSR, oil industry CSR practices in the Niger Delta, and the methodology used is presented. The findings show that community expectations were framed through the lens of underdevelopment …

Evaluating The Competitiveness Of Intercity Buses In Terms Of Sustainability Indicators, Mintesnot Woldeamanuel Sep 2012

Evaluating The Competitiveness Of Intercity Buses In Terms Of Sustainability Indicators, Mintesnot Woldeamanuel

Journal of Public Transportation

A sustainable transportation system is the one that is designed based on environmental awareness, social equity, and economic opportunities. Public transportation, in general, and intercity transit, in particular, are playing very significant roles for communities to reach their sustainability goals. Of the available intercity transit services, buses are showing a noteworthy growth to be a competitive mode in terms of sustainability indicators. After several decades of decline, intercity bus services are growing at an increasing rate, overtaking other intercity services. This paper, based on data from various sources and existing literature, makes a comparative analysis of intercity bus services with …

Public Use Of Local Foods In The Tanana Valley: Understandings Of Producers And Low-Income Community Members, Rachel Aleksandra Garcia Aug 2012

Public Use Of Local Foods In The Tanana Valley: Understandings Of Producers And Low-Income Community Members, Rachel Aleksandra Garcia

Natural Resources

This thesis explores factors that affect local food use in the Tanana Valley region of Alaska. Alaskan public discourses increasingly link local food production to a more sustainable and secure state and community food supply. However, current local food system development in the United States is marked by signs of socially unequal distribution of the benefits of local food. In Spring 2011, semi - structured interviews and focus groups were conducted with agricultural producers and community members affiliated with the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC), and the Farmers' Market Nutrition Program (FMNP). Results show that …

Youth Creating Sustainable Communities In Rural Alaska, Irmelin Gram-Hanssen Aug 2012

Youth Creating Sustainable Communities In Rural Alaska, Irmelin Gram-Hanssen

Arctic and Northern Studies

In this thesis I discuss the ability of the people of Igiugig to define their strengths and vulnerabilities as a village, and their ability to create innovative solutions in their conscious efforts to become a more sustainable village now and in the future. I argue that this process provides the village of Igiugig with a high degree of self-determination and increases its ability to move into the future on its own terms rather than terms defined solely by world politics and economics. A key component of Igiugig's process of becoming more sustainable is the accommodation and empowerment of its youth. …

Effective Parole Supervisor Traits Observed By Texas Parole Officers, David H. Bolding Ii Aug 2012

Effective Parole Supervisor Traits Observed By Texas Parole Officers, David H. Bolding Ii

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

This research study uses a quantitative method to identify the traits that Texas parole officers observe make an effective leader. This study adds to what seems to be a void in research on parole supervisors. Prior literature has identified that numerous individual traits and observable traits play an active role in effective leaders. This study uses "Survey Monkey" to employ the use of surveys across Texas, and to ensure confidentiality. By utilizing the method in this study, effective traits can be identified and used as a tool to increase present supervisory capabilities and allow others to have a guide on …

Place-Free And Place-Based Educational Preferences Among Rural High School Principals, Joshua Pfiester Aug 2012

Place-Free And Place-Based Educational Preferences Among Rural High School Principals, Joshua Pfiester

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Rural schooling and rural communities are interdependent to a degree not seen in suburban and urban contexts. Thus, the threat to the sustainability of one inevitably affects the other. One of the variables in their sustainability may be educational practices (Haas & Nachtigal, 1998; White & Reid, 2008) that influence the likelihood of rural high school graduate outmigration (Corbett, 2007; Huang, Cohen, Weng, & Zhang, 1996). Considering the body of literature that testifies to the strong influence school administrators have in schools (Hallinger & Heck, 1996; Leithwood & Jantzi, 2000; Prestine & Nelson, 2005), understanding the preferences in educational practices …

An Experiential Model Of Evaluation: Incorporating Graduate Students In The Collection And Reporting Of Mixed-Method Data, Nancy Deringer

Journal of Youth Development

A graduate level course was developed which incorporated the experiential learning philosophy of “learning by doing.” Students gained knowledge about program development and evaluation through using an on-line course management system as well as practicing what they learned during on-site evaluation visits. All background and supplementary reading materials, assignments, chats, and discussions were managed on-line. Students applied what they learned and collected quantitative and qualitative data while conducting site visits throughout the semester. Through this experiential learning evaluation course students made meaning from their direct experiences, took time to reflect upon their learning, and felt confident in their abilities as …

An Exploratory Study Of The Potential Impacts Of Yoga On Self And Community: Creating Mindfulness, Self-Actualization And Social Capital, Lauren Ponder Aug 2012

An Exploratory Study Of The Potential Impacts Of Yoga On Self And Community: Creating Mindfulness, Self-Actualization And Social Capital, Lauren Ponder

All Theses

ABSTRACT
Yoga, literally translated means yoke or connection and is a process by which relationships, respect and transformation can occur. It is believed that mindfulness is a result of the practice of yoga and can be easily understood in its opposite of mindlessness. When change takes place within self, or one's own body and mind, both positive transformation towards more conscious action and mindfulness is hypothesized to be transferred to one's community. Community is self-defining in that it is based on a sense of shared purpose and common goals. Yogis, those who practice yoga, could be responsible for a positive …

Laughing Out Loud: Art, Culture, And Fantasy, Henrietta L. Moore Aug 2012

Laughing Out Loud: Art, Culture, And Fantasy, Henrietta L. Moore

Cardozo Law Review

What makes art valuable? Why in times of crisis do people buy contemporary art? This Paper discusses whether or not investment in art can ever be seen as rational, and explores how the contemporary art market is expanding to include not just works of art, but art as a form of cultural practice. Audiences are no longer content simply to visit museums, galleries, and other cultural institutions. They want to participate, but why are art fairs, biennials, and museum events so popular? The contemporary art market has always been segmented, and reputation and display have been important motivators for rich …

Building Regional Networking Capacity Through Leadership Development: The Case Of Leadership Northwest Missouri, Beverly Maltsberger, Wilson Majee

Journal of Extension

Through a case study analysis of a regional leadership development program, this article describes the impact on individual and group leadership skills and how the skills are employed to benefit individual communities and the region as a whole. Data were obtained through surveys. Through cooperation and collaboration between and among leadership program graduates, leadership alumni, and other regional leaders, graduates grew personally and professionally, and built new networks that help them advance their communities and the region. The most significant implication for Extension from this study is the need to expand partnerships in order to better utilize resources.

Using Common Evaluation Instruments Across Multi-State Community Programs: A Pilot Study, Pamela B. Payne, Daniel A. Mcdonald Aug 2012

Using Common Evaluation Instruments Across Multi-State Community Programs: A Pilot Study, Pamela B. Payne, Daniel A. Mcdonald

Journal of Extension

In times of diminishing resources to support community programs, it is critical that Extension make every effort to show impact as collectively as possible for the variety of programs being delivered in individual counties and communities. The pilot study reported here (funded by CYFAR, NIFA, USDA award #2008-41520-04810), focused on outcomes in youth citizenship programs in four states. Key factors to consider in the selection of common instruments include length, scope, and validation of instruments. The importance of dosage, specifically intensity and duration, are highlighted in relation to program outcomes.

Author Michele Dillon conducted a case study of community change in Coös County, New Hampshire, for two-and-a-half years (June 2009-December 2011) to investigate how local community leaders in Coös assess the initiatives, challenges, opportunities, and progress in the North Country during this time of economic transition. Her primary data-gathering method included personal interviews with community leaders, supplemented by observation, documentary, and survey data. Dillon discusses how there is a strong consensus among community leaders that Coös needs to work together as a county with a unified vision and voice while respecting the specific character, strengths, and needs of each local …

A Social Capital Model Of Public Relations: Development And Validation Of A Social Capital Measure, Melissa D. Dodd Jul 2012

A Social Capital Model Of Public Relations: Development And Validation Of A Social Capital Measure, Melissa D. Dodd

Open Access Dissertations

A theory and conceptualization of social capital as a resource- and exchange- based function of public relations was proposed. Fourteen hypotheses and one research question tested social capital propositions and postulates in a public relations-specific context, and a measure of social capital was created and tested alongside measures of human capital and organizational financial capital. A holistic model of social capital was tested using structural equation modeling such that human capital was hypothesized to predict social capital, human and social capital were hypothesized to predict public relations outcomes, and public relations outcomes were hypothesized to predict financial capital. It was …
