Underemployment In Urban And Rural America, 2005-2012, Justin R. Young

Carsey Publications

Author Justin Young reports that underemployment (or involuntary part-time work) rates doubled during the second year of the recession, reaching roughly 6.5 percent in 2009. This increase was equally steep in both rural and urban places. By March of 2012, underemployment was slightly lower in rural places (4.8 percent) compared to urban places (5.3 percent). Prior to the recession, however, underemployment was slightly higher in rural America. Workers under age 30, as well as women, black, and Hispanic workers, continue to experience higher levels of underemployment. Underemployment is strongly linked with education, with the least educated workers experiencing higher rates …

Women Empowerment And Community Development Through Ecotourism, Katherine S. Barry Nov 2012

Women Empowerment And Community Development Through Ecotourism, Katherine S. Barry

Capstone Collection

Eco-tourism is generically and broadly considered to be a trendy topic for the privileged traveler to obtain an “authentic cultural experience”. This paper aims to disprove common misperceptions and present failures the system has created. Eco-tourism is an over-exploited and under-utilized tool in the field of sustainable development. Many resorts and “cultural” tours dominant, while local people suffer economically, social and environmentally. However, in the far-reaches of the Kakamega rainforest, there is group that is filling the environmental, social and economic gap in the field of sustainable tourism. They are the Isecheno Women’s Conservation Group, empowering and educating women to …

International Partnerships: A Model For Educational Organizations, Wesley Hickey, Janice A. Achtem, Joyce Nuner Nov 2012

International Partnerships: A Model For Educational Organizations, Wesley Hickey, Janice A. Achtem, Joyce Nuner

Educational Leadership and Policy Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

Opportunities exist for faculty and students within educational leadership preparation programs to participate in international initiatives within developing countries. One way to do this is through collaboration with organizations that already have an established presence in the country. Working within these organizations provides opportunities for learning and research for the educational leadership program. If done well, such work also helps host organizations meet their mission and goals. An understanding of effective behaviors in international partnerships may benefit educational leadership programs that develop these types of service opportunities. The behaviors mirror the scholar-practitioner philosophy, of which some prominent educational leadership programs …

Vincentian Pragmatism: Toward A Method For Systemic Change, Scott Kelley Ph.D. Nov 2012

Vincentian Pragmatism: Toward A Method For Systemic Change, Scott Kelley Ph.D.

Vincentian Studies

Scott Kelley creates the term Vincentian Pragmatism and defines it as “Vincent [de Paul]’s way of proceeding . . . [it is] an integrated and holistic way of knowing that is capable of systemic change.” He writes, “Vincentian Pragmatism must also inform the way we engage, identify, explore, interpret, and decide in response to the complex systems that exacerbate poverty. It must unite action and contemplation.” Kelley identifies questions we must ask to pursue Vincentian epistemology and explains how Vincent developed it from his own experience. The process of overcoming our biases and forming a Vincentian worldview is also examined. …

Monk’S Bread: The History Of The Commercial Bakery At The Abbey Of The Genesee, Tim Davis Oct 2012

Monk’S Bread: The History Of The Commercial Bakery At The Abbey Of The Genesee, Tim Davis

Northeast Popular Culture Association

Throughout the long history of the Cistercian Order each foundation would attempt to become self sufficient by establishing an industry which was linked to the life of the monastic community. Not only did this practice encourage independence from the mother-house but also discouraged overdependence upon assistance from the secular world. The Abbey of the Genesee was founded in 1951 as an offshoot of Gethsemani Abbey (home to the famous Thomas Merton). These early Trappist communities were among 10 others in the United States that had their roots in most strict observances within the Cistercian order. The Genesee monks chose several …

Planetarian Identity Formation And The Relocalization Of Environmental Law, Sarah Krakoff Oct 2012

Planetarian Identity Formation And The Relocalization Of Environmental Law, Sarah Krakoff

Florida Law Review

Local food, local work, local energy production-all are hallmarks of a resurgence of localism throughout contemporary environmental thought and action. The renaissance of localism might be seen as a retreat from the world’s global environmental problems. This Article maintains, however, that some forms of localism are actually expressions, appropriate ones, of a planetary environmental consciousness. This Article’s centerpiece is an in-depth evaluation of local climate action initiatives, including interviews with participants, as well as other data and observations about their ethics, attitudes, behaviors, and motivations. The values and identities being forged in these initiatives form the basis for timely conceptions …

Examining The Impact Of Pau Jacaré (Piptadenia Gonoacantha) Growth On Soil Fertility In The Brazilian Atlantic Rainforest, Aleksandra Ponomareva

Environmental Analysis Program Mellon Student Summer Research Reports

The Atlantic Rainforest of Brazil is an area of astounding diversity in both flora and fauna, taking its place among the top five “biodiversity hotspots” in the world. However, in the past 40 or 50 years the area has been increasingly threatened by the presence of humans – approximately 93% of the Rainforest has disappeared as a result of exploitation (Turner 2004). Unsustainable farming practices, as well as logging, cattle ranching and mining activities have caused soil infertility, water depletion, erosion and destruction of ecosystems. This project examines the effects of the Pau Jacaré, Piptadenia gonoacantha, tree on soil health …
