Challenging The Grammar Of Schooling: Individually Guided Education, 1969-1979, Pyeong-Gook Kim Nov 2012

Challenging The Grammar Of Schooling: Individually Guided Education, 1969-1979, Pyeong-Gook Kim

Education and Culture

The late 1950s and the 1960s witnessed the emergence of a series of educational innovations, which can be divided into the following four categories. First, concerns for equality of opportunity led to efforts at achieving desegregation and the use of extensive busing for transporting students to consolidated schools and/or districts (Carlson, 1996; Pulliam & Patten, 1999). Second, the successful launch of Sputnik led American secondary schools to increase the number of courses in math, science, and foreign languages, while the federal government sponsored a number of curriculum projects with an emphasis on the structure of discipline (Pinar, Reynolds, Slattery, & …

John Dewey's Philosophy Of Education Before Democracy And Education, J. J. Chambliss Nov 2012

John Dewey's Philosophy Of Education Before Democracy And Education, J. J. Chambliss

Education and Culture

John Dewey's Democracy and Education: An Introduction to the Philosophy of Education, was published in 1916. It is still the best-known work in philosophy of education by an American author, and has remained in print down to the present time. Democracy and Education differs from many texts in the philosophy of education in that it was not written merely as a philosophy to be "applied" to education. It was made possible in large part by Dewey's participation in the Laboratory School at the University of Chicago from 1896 to 1904. Dewey's own experience with faculty and students at that …

Naturalization Ceremonies And The Role Of Immigrants In The American Nation, Sofya Aptekar Nov 2012

Naturalization Ceremonies And The Role Of Immigrants In The American Nation, Sofya Aptekar

Publications and Research

Although immigration is an essential element in the American national story, it presents difficulties for constructing national membership and national identity in terms of shared intrinsic values. In this article, I analyze speeches made at naturalization ceremonies during two time periods (1950 – 1970 and 2003 – present) to examine the evolving roles of immigrants, as articulated to immigrants themselves. Naturalization ceremonies are a unique research site because the usually implied nationalist content is made explicit to brand new members of the nation. I find a shift in the framing from immigrants as potential liabilities and weak links in the …

Social Capital And Business Incubators Performance: Testing The Structural Model, Renata Valentina Adlešič, Alenka Slavec Nov 2012

Social Capital And Business Incubators Performance: Testing The Structural Model, Renata Valentina Adlešič, Alenka Slavec

Economic and Business Review

Social capital is considered as an important factor of innovativeness, organizational advantage and value creation. Although social capital has been widely studied in general, there is a lack of research investigating the role of social capital in relation to business incubators. Additionally, the literature still misses an alternative intangible view of incubators’ performance viewed from the perspective of the incubatees. Thus, this study contributes an insight into the social capital and networking exploitation of firms in incubators and evaluates the performance of incubators from the perspective of their incubatees. In specific, we investigate how do social network size, role models, …

Findings From The Nutrition Challenge Program, Rayleen Earney, Nicole Bungum, Timothy J. Bungum Nov 2012

Findings From The Nutrition Challenge Program, Rayleen Earney, Nicole Bungum, Timothy J. Bungum

Nevada Journal of Public Health

Obesity is an epidemic in the United States. Over 61% of U.S. adults and 58% of Nevada adults have Body Mass Index’s (BMI) that classify them as either overweight or obese (Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System [BRFSS], 2005). According to a recent article published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, obesity was the second leading cause of preventable death in the United States behind tobacco use (Mokdad, Marks, Stroup & Gerberding, 2004).

While obesity and overweight are complex, multi-factorial health conditions, an important contributor to the overweight and obesity epidemic is poor dietary habits. One of the major …

Evaluation Of The Impact Of A Health Care Administration Student Practicum, Christopher R. Cochran, Michelle Sotero

Nevada Journal of Public Health

As the health care industry becomes increasingly complex, many leaders and practitioners in the field are worried about the quality and preparation of health care administration graduates (Robbins, Bradley, & Spicer, 2001). Academic health care administration programs prepare students for a professional career in the health care field. One of the biggest challenges for university health care administration programs is to meet industry needs by effectively incorporating practical skills and knowledge into the academic curricula. For students, coursework provides some insight into the demands of the industry, but they also require hands-on experience to be relevant in a highly competitive …

Lead Shot Deposition And Distribution In Southern Nevada, Shawn Gerstenberger, Darren D. Divine Nov 2012

Lead Shot Deposition And Distribution In Southern Nevada, Shawn Gerstenberger, Darren D. Divine

Nevada Journal of Public Health

Densities of lead (Pb) shot in soil and the presence of Pb shot in waterfowl gizzards from past hunting activities at the Overton Wildlife Management Area (OWMA) in southern Nevada were determined. Soil shot densities in fields managed for doves, pheasants and geese, and adjacent fields strictly managed as waterfowl habitat were examined. Soil shot densities ranged from 2,691 to 107,642 Pb shot/ha in waterfowl areas to 649,085 to 862,275 Pb shot/ha in dove management areas. Pb shot deposition rates for the 1998-1999 dove hunting season were also calculated and ranged from 8,970 to 22,559 shot/ha in fields managed primarily …

Did Dewey Presage The 1989 National Council Of Teachers Of Mathematics Standards?, Teresa M. Finken Nov 2012

Did Dewey Presage The 1989 National Council Of Teachers Of Mathematics Standards?, Teresa M. Finken

Education and Culture

The general theme of change in philosophy over time is due to traditional customs and beliefs failing to regulate society. This theme drove both John Dewey's Progressive Movement and the creation of the Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics (1989) by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM). The remarkable similarity in thought between Dewey's writings and the Standards is the basis for this paper. The point of view is from the Standards looking back to find Dewey's similar ideas. Although Dewey's views of mathematics per se are not extensively explicated, his overarching views on learning content resonate …

An Alternative Framework For Ethics Instruction In Social Education, Thomas J. Misco Jr., Gregory E. Hamot Nov 2012

An Alternative Framework For Ethics Instruction In Social Education, Thomas J. Misco Jr., Gregory E. Hamot

Education and Culture

Ethics are central to social education, and making ethical decisions underlies the purpose of teaching critical thinking and interpretive skills in the classroom. The point in acquiring these skills is to apply them in the real world when deciding "what ought to be," "right from wrong," and "good from bad." Few educational philosophers would disagree up to this point. However, when discussion begins on how to teach ethics, beliefs diverge considerably.

Ironically, both the extreme left and extreme right wings of educational thought seek the same end, that of ethics inculcation. Inculcation of anything is a dangerous if not unethical …

The Missouri-Iowa (Mi) Plan For Course Improvement: Traveling Toward Tqm: The Otis Route, Judy Griffith, John Mclure, Jann Weitzel

Education and Culture

Three years ago, our odyssey to apply Deming's Total Quality Management (TQM) to college courses began. As we considered alternative routes to effective teaching, we found it necessary to consider carefully the organization of our classrooms, technology used for instruction and assessment, and student input opportunities as we strove to shape our courses. This is, for the purposes of this paper, the OTIS (organization, technology, input, shaping) route. Though we consider ourselves to be far from the end of the journey, the experiences have been challenging and renewing, and we would like to share some of our work with you. …

Towards A Flexible Curriculum: John Dewey's Theory Of Experience And Learning, Joop W. A. Berding Nov 2012

Towards A Flexible Curriculum: John Dewey's Theory Of Experience And Learning, Joop W. A. Berding

Education and Culture

Positively stated, a reconceptualization of curriculum will most certainly have to take its cue from the American philosopher and pedagogue John Dewey (1859-1952). His work in philosophy and education is one great attempt to overcome dysfunctional dualisms like between the child and the curriculum, freedom and discipline, the individual and the society, body and mind. I will use my reconstruction of his theory of experience and learning to challenge the claim made by the Tanners (Tanner and Tanner, 1980, 1988; D. Tanner, 1982; L.N. Tanner, 1982) that Dewey must be regarded as the ancestor of 'modern' curriculum theory as formulated …

Translating Studies Across Cultures, Carol Korn-Bursztyn Nov 2012

Translating Studies Across Cultures, Carol Korn-Bursztyn

Education and Culture

The stories that a culture tells are intimately connected to what Dewey referred to as "life as it is ordinarily lived" (1934), or as it once was. Works of art, Dewey noted, lost their connection to ordinary life and became, instead, specimens of fine art rather than artifacts connected to the daily lives of people. Art and artistic activity have consequently grown increasingly split off from communal life, rather than anchored within the culture. Folktales, steeped as they are within a particular culture, are repositories of cultural beliefs and traditions, and may be psychologically distant for the culturally different audience. …

Vygotsky And Marxism, Danling Fu Nov 2012

Vygotsky And Marxism, Danling Fu

Education and Culture

To cut off Vygotsky from Marx is to look at him fragmentally and to separate his work from its theoretical basis. The very act is anti-dialectical materialism, the fundamental principle guiding Vygotsky's research and shaping his analysis. A discussion of Vygotsky in the context of Marxism will help us reach an understanding of the theoretic framework of Vygotsky's thinking. This understanding will lead us to a more profound interpretation of Vygotsky's theory and approach. Hopefully this discussion will also help readers understand Marxist theory and methodology in some way. In this article, based on two of Vygotsky's most known works …

Interrelated Processes Toward Quality Of Life In Survivors Of Childhood Cancer: A Grounded Theory, Miranda Tsonis, Janette Mcdougall, Angela Mandich, Jennifer Irwin Nov 2012

Interrelated Processes Toward Quality Of Life In Survivors Of Childhood Cancer: A Grounded Theory, Miranda Tsonis, Janette Mcdougall, Angela Mandich, Jennifer Irwin

The Qualitative Report

Past research has not adequately addressed the quality of life (QOL) of survivors of childhood cancer. The purpose of this study was to understand how QOL is experienced for individuals who have survived childhood cancer. Specific research questions included: (a) How do childhood cancer survivors define the concept of QOL and (b) What processes do childhood cancer survivors go through regarding their QOL? Researchers used grounded theory to analyze in-depth interviews conducted with eight survivors. Survivors use a process of specific action strategies and intervening conditions to manage impacts and effects, resulting in life enjoyment, or good QOL. The identification …

Fostering Change In Organizational Culture Using A Critical Ethnographic Approach, Rosemary A. Brander, Margo Patterson, Yolande E. Chan Nov 2012

Fostering Change In Organizational Culture Using A Critical Ethnographic Approach, Rosemary A. Brander, Margo Patterson, Yolande E. Chan

The Qualitative Report

Healthcare organizations are striving to meet legislated and public expectations to include patients as equal partners in their care, and research is needed to guide successful implementation and outcomes. The current research examined the meaning of customer service as related to the culture of care relationships within a Canadian hospital in southeastern Ontario. The goals were to better understand these expectations, develop shared meanings and influence cultural change from the perspective of the organization’s employees about their interactions with patients, families and work colleagues, and to generate ideas and groundswell for change. An ethnographic approach within the critical research paradigm …
