Developing Situation Awareness Capacity To Improve Executive Judgment And Decision Making Under Stress, Martha M. Batorski

Theses and Dissertations

This study examined multiple factors that underlie a key component of leadership resilience, situation awareness (SA), and its role in executive judgment and decision making under stress. SA, researched for over 30 years in military and critical incident professions by researchers from the field of Naturalistic Decision Making (NDM), has increasing relevance to leaders in organizations, particularly those who are challenged by high uncertainty and accelerating change, traditionally addressed by the field of organization development (OD). The study specifically examines the Transcendental MeditationTM technique within the context of a 10-week intervention for developing SA capacity in emerging leaders (N …

Response To Instruction And Intervention: Teachers' Perceptions Of The Implementation In The Beaumont Unified School District As Measured By The Concerned [Sic] Based Adoption Model, Rebecca M. Salato

Theses and Dissertations

A school district in southern California mandated the implementation of Response to Intervention (RtI) in order to better meet the needs of all district students. RtI is a proven approach to ameliorating academic and behavioral difficulties. It provides a logical structure for allocating instructional resources to utilize research-based effective instructional practices, identify students with learning disabilities, and collaborate between general and special education to benefit all students. In order to continue to provide effective professional development for teachers and thus improve the chances of successful implementation, district administrators needed feedback about the process of implementation and concerns of teachers. The …

The Development Of A Standard Of Care For Competency To Stand Trial Evaluations, Alexis Bowles Jan 2012

The Development Of A Standard Of Care For Competency To Stand Trial Evaluations, Alexis Bowles

Theses and Dissertations

Competency evaluations are the most widely completed forensic evaluation and concerns have been raised regarding inconsistency in the quality of forensic evaluations (Bow & Quinnell, 2001; Horvath, Logan, & Walker, 2002; Otto & Heilbrun, 2002). Currently, there is no enforceable standard of care in forensic psychological assessment (Heilbrun, DeMatteo, Marczyk, & Goldstein 2008). The research objective was to examine practice procedures and explore the development of a standard of care for competency evaluations. The study aimed to answer 2 research questions: (a) What are the current recommended practice procedures for psychologists conducting competency evaluations? (b) What would a standard of …

Psychology Internship Training In Evidence-Based Treatments For Youth With Disruptive Behavior Problems, Nathan J. Balfanz

Theses and Dissertations

The implementation of evidence-based treatments (EBTs) has become a topic of significant debate amongst researchers and mental health practitioners alike. While current research has indicated a shift in attitudes amongst treatment providers for what constitutes as "best practices" in treating clients, less is known regarding the dissemination and teaching of EBTs for early career, training clinicians. The focus of this study was to take a closer look at clinical training in EBT strategies, specifically those for children and adolescents with disruptive behavior problems (DBPs). Sixty-four internship training directors and program representatives from American Psychological Association (APA) accredited and Association of …

Morality In The Virtual Space: Applying Moral Philosophy To Digital Worlds, James O'Sullivan Jan 2012

Morality In The Virtual Space: Applying Moral Philosophy To Digital Worlds, James O'Sullivan

Theses

Since the turn of the century and the dawn of the digital age, online communities have witnessed significant growth in their importance. Significant numbers of virtual environments now exist, within which millions of individuals interact socially and economically, engaged fully in what is equivalent to a physical encounter, the only differences being the virtual representations through which they interact, and the physical security that this representation affords them. Though physically absent, individuals are fully engaged psychologically, and thus open to the same ethical dilemmas presented through reality. Application of real-world moral codes is encumbered by the existence of what 1 …

In Good Conscience: Expressions Of Judicial Conscience In Federal Appellate Opinions, Sarah M. R. Cravens

Akron Law Faculty Publications

This article explores judicial references to what judges may or may not do, in their own words, “in good conscience.” It assesses the most common situations in which federal appellate judges use this term and it discusses the propriety of different uses and placements of those expressions of conscientious commitments that play into judicial decisionmaking. It distinguishes between expressions of primarily institutional conscience (that is, the commitment to certain institutional values, responsibilities, or limitations on what the judge may do) and expressions of primarily personal conscience (that is, the commitment to the individual values or beliefs of the judge who …

The Growing Acceptance And Legal Recognition Of Same-Sex Marriage In America Constitutes A Victory For Reality-Based Thinking, Wilson Huhn Jan 2012

The Growing Acceptance And Legal Recognition Of Same-Sex Marriage In America Constitutes A Victory For Reality-Based Thinking, Wilson Huhn

Akron Law Faculty Publications

During the 20th century “pragmatism” emerged as the leading American philosophy and policy analysis – also called “legal realism” – became the dominant method of interpreting American law. The lightning speed with which same-sex marriage is gaining acceptance in the United States is due to the fact that Americans embrace realistic rather than ideological forms of thinking, and the growing recognition of same-sex marriage in the law is due to the fact that we interpret our Constitution in accordance with realistic analysis.

Misappropriating Women's History In The Law And Politics Of Abortion, Tracy A. Thomas Jan 2012

Misappropriating Women's History In The Law And Politics Of Abortion, Tracy A. Thomas

Akron Law Faculty Publications

“Without known exception, the early American feminists condemned abortion in the strongest possible terms.” This claim about women’s history has been used by pro-life advocates for twenty years to control the political narrative of abortion. Conservatives, led by the group Feminists for Life, have used feminist icons from history to support their anti-abortion advocacy. Federal anti-abortion legislation has been named after feminist heroines, like the Elizabeth Cady Stanton Pregnancy and Parenting Students Act (co-sponsored by Rick Santorum) and the Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass Act of 2011. Amicus briefs to the U.S. Supreme Court quote women’s rights leaders in …

U.S. Trafficking Policy And The J-1 Visa Program : The State Department's Challenge From Within, Patricia Medige, Catherine G Bowman

Intercultural Human Rights Law Review

This article will review two key J-1 categories of the Exchange Visitor Program-the Au Pair and Summer Work Travel (SWT) programs-and compare the legal protections afforded by them to those provided under the H-2A and H-2B visas, two temporary worker visa programs regulated by the U.S. Department of Labor (USDOL).7 The article will then discuss the J-1 program within the context of the U.S. Trafficking Victims Protection Act (TVPA),8 a federal law passed in 2000, which significantly altered the legal definitions and penalties associated with human trafficking and conferred additional responsibilities to the State Department to coordinate anti-trafficking efforts. The …

Odyssey Of The Mind: Social Networking In Cyberschool, Michael Barbour, Cory Plough Jan 2012

Odyssey Of The Mind: Social Networking In Cyberschool, Michael Barbour, Cory Plough

Education Faculty Publications

K-12 online learning and cyber charter schools have grown at a tremendous rate over the past decade. At the same time, these online programs have struggled to provide the social spaces where students can interact that K-12 schools are traditionally able to provide. Social networking presents a unique opportunity to provide these kinds of social interactions in an online environment. In this article, we trace the development and use of social networking at one cyber charter school to extend the space for online instruction and provide opportunities for social interaction that online schools are often unable to provide.

Community-Engaged Student Research: Online Resources, Real World Impact, Catherine Bates, Kenneth Burns

Staff Articles and Research Papers

This paper offers case studies from two Irish Higher Education Institutions on the benefits and challenges of using on-line databases and application processes to recruit students to community-engaged research projects. We briefly introduce the principles of Community-Based Research (CBR), showing how this pedagogy allows students to collaborate with underserved community partners and not-for-profit organisations on real-life research projects, preparing them for the workplace, and enhancing their college experience. Staff in University College Cork (UCC) and Technological University City (DIT) use digital resources to offer students the opportunity to browse live research topics, suggested to us by communities, on our websites, …

Perceived Social Support Networks And Prosocial Outcomes Among Latino/A Youth In The United States, Maria Rosario De Guzman, Eunju Jung, Kieu-Anh T. Do

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

This study examines Latino/a adolescents’ perceived sources and types of social support, and links between social support and prosocial tendencies. Latino/a adolescents (N=126) in Midwestern United States participated in the study. Respondents of higher generational status reported broader social support networks and a higher amount of overall social support compared to peers of lower generational status. Youth perceived the highest amount of social support from immediate family, followed by extended family, and lastly from non-kin individuals. Path analysis indicated that overall social support was directly and positively associated with altruistic prosocial tendencies, and directly and negatively associated with public prosocial …

What Does It Mean To Be Prosocial? A Cross-Ethnic Study Of Parental Beliefs, Maria Rosario T. De Guzman, Jill Brown, Gustavo Carlo, George P. Knight

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

This study explored parental beliefs surrounding prosocial behaviors and the parenting practices that promote them. A total of 47 mothers of young adolescents participated in one of the seven focus groups, three of which were conducted in Spanish with first-generation Mexican-American immigrants, two were conducted in English among second generation (US-born) Mexican Americans, and two were conducted with European Americans. Responses were coded using elements of the grounded theory approach, and results indicate patterns of shared and unique beliefs about prosocial behaviors in ways that reflect the sociocultural context and acculturative experiences of the respondents. Findings suggest that beliefs about …

Examining Associations Between Classroom Environment And Processes And Early Mathematics Performance From Pre-Kindergarten To Kindergarten, Victoria J. Molfese, E. Todd Brown, Jill L. Adelson, Jennifer Beswick, Jill L. Jacobi-Vessels, Lana Thomas, Melissa Ferguson, Brittany Culver Jan 2012

Examining Associations Between Classroom Environment And Processes And Early Mathematics Performance From Pre-Kindergarten To Kindergarten, Victoria J. Molfese, E. Todd Brown, Jill L. Adelson, Jennifer Beswick, Jill L. Jacobi-Vessels, Lana Thomas, Melissa Ferguson, Brittany Culver

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

One benefit of the No Child Left Behind legislation (2001) has been the increasing attention on the importance of the skills learned in the pre-kindergarten period for later academic achievement (Denton & West, 2002; National Mathematics Advisory Panel, 2008; Whitehurst, 2001). There is a growing awareness that mathematics skills in kindergarten and beyond are influenced by the formal and informal mathematics skills acquired in the pre-kindergarten classroom. Indeed, policy makers, researchers, and educators are now arguing that pre-kindergarten mathematics instruction must be recognized as a critical factor affecting young children’s mathematics learning at school age (Ginsburg, Lee & Boyd, 2008). …

Science, Technology, Engineering, And Mathematics Graduate Teaching Assistants Teaching Self-Efficacy, Sue Ellen Dechenne, Larry G. Enochs, Mark Needham

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

The graduate experience is a critical time for development of academic faculty, but often there is little preparation for teaching during the graduate career. Teaching self-efficacy, an instructor’s belief in his or her ability to teach students in a specific context, can help to predict teaching behavior and student achievement, and can be used as a measure of graduate students’ development as instructors. An instrument measuring teaching self-efficacy of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) graduate teaching assistants (GTAs) was developed from a general university faculty teaching instrument to the specific teaching context of STEM GTAs. Construct and face validity, …

Rewarding Excellent Teaching: The Translation Of A Policy Initiative In The United Kingdom, Rebecca Turner, David Gosling Jan 2012

Rewarding Excellent Teaching: The Translation Of A Policy Initiative In The United Kingdom, Rebecca Turner, David Gosling

Plymouth Institute of Education

The need to provide more significant rewards for ‘teaching excellence’ in order to provide parity of status with research in higher education has often been asserted. This paper examines ways in which the idea of rewarding excellent teaching has been understood and translated within a large teaching and learning initiative that was overtly based on rewarding and recognising excellent teaching. The initiative studied here, was the formation of 74 Centres for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, established by the Higher Education Funding Council for England in 2004.The findings are based on research that traced the ‘translation’ of this policy aim in …

Producing Multimedia Resources For Teaching Medical Students About The Social Context Of Medicine: A Partnership Approach, Tracey J Collett, Priska Schoenborn, Verity Campbell Barr, Fiona Dalton, Valerie Huggins, Oxana Poverjuc, Lynne Wyness

Plymouth Institute of Education

The UK General Medical Council (GMC) requires medical school graduates to be able to apply social science principles to medical practice (1993, 2009). At the policy level it is recognised that understanding of the social context of medicine results in drastic improvements to health care, morbidity and mortality (see, for example, Russell, 2009) but many undergraduate students tend to see the social sciences as ‘nice to know’ rather than ‘need to know’ (Armstrong 1979, Bolman et al, 1995, Benbassett et al, 2003, Litvia and Peters, 2008). The emphasis on disciplinary integration (Harden, 2000) and pedagogic transition from didactic to ‘problem …

Incorporating Rural And Farm Novels In The Secondary School Classroom: Where We Come From Is Who We Are, Jesse Moon Longhurst Jan 2012

Incorporating Rural And Farm Novels In The Secondary School Classroom: Where We Come From Is Who We Are, Jesse Moon Longhurst

Journal of Inquiry and Action in Education

Place-based education has received significant attention in recent years. This article briefly surveys common place-based education models and then argues for a more place-focused English language arts classroom in secondary schools where rural and regional literature is often absent from the curricula. The author posits that teacher-education programs do not usually address rural or regional literature and consequently, teachers enter the classroom unprepared to teach it. The article presents a rationale for focusing on rural literature written before 1965 as well as a rationale for foregrounding the rural experience in such a course. The author then describes the process of …

The Roberts Court And The Civil Procedure Revival, Howard Merrill Wasserman Jan 2012

The Roberts Court And The Civil Procedure Revival, Howard Merrill Wasserman

Faculty Publications

In the six terms since John G. Roberts became Chief Justice in September 2005, the Supreme Court has decided numerous, significant, and potentially far-reaching cases on core civil procedure subjects, including pleading, summary judgment, personal jurisdiction, subject matter jurisdiction, class actions, and the Erie/Hanna Doctrine. This renewed interest in civil procedure and the Federal Rules is an important, but little-discussed, jurisprudential theme of the early years of the Roberts Court. This essay explores the Court’s emerging reengagement with civil procedure; it identifies several organizing themes in the recent cases and examines the existing ambivalence and hostility among the competing rulemaking …
