Stakeholder Theory And Marketing: Moving From A Firm-Centric To A Societal Perspective, Gene R. Laczniak, Patrick E. Murphy Jan 2012

Stakeholder Theory And Marketing: Moving From A Firm-Centric To A Societal Perspective, Gene R. Laczniak, Patrick E. Murphy

Marketing Faculty Research and Publications

This essay is inspired by the ideas and research examined in the special section on “Stakeholder Marketing” of the Journal of Public Policy & Marketing in 2010. The authors argue that stakeholder marketing is slowly coalescing with the broader thinking that has occurred in the stakeholder management and ethics literature streams during the past quarter century. However, the predominant view of stakeholders that many marketers advocate is still primarily pragmatic and company centric. The position advanced herein is that stronger forms of stakeholder marketing that reflect more normative, macro/societal, and network-focused orientations are necessary. The authors briefly explain and justify …

From The African American Oral Tradition To Slam Poetry: Rhetoric And Stylistics, Shawnkeisha Stoudamire Jan 2012

From The African American Oral Tradition To Slam Poetry: Rhetoric And Stylistics, Shawnkeisha Stoudamire

McNair Scholars Journal

Slam poetry is one of the most recent cultural innovations of African Americans. As with many cultural innovations, the artistry of slam poetry is undervalued while its entertainment appeal is overvalued. Although slam poetry’s artistry lies in both verbal and non-verbal aspects of performance, this research project focuses mainly on selected verbal features of slam poetry. This research seeks to balance the artistic and entertainment appeal of contemporary slam poetry by demonstrating that its verbal features derive from a linguistic heritage in early forms of Black English vernacular oral storytelling and from new styles of performance poetry produced by African …

From The Enlightenment To Genocide: The Evolution And Devolution Of Romanian Nationalism, Shawn Wooster Jan 2012

From The Enlightenment To Genocide: The Evolution And Devolution Of Romanian Nationalism, Shawn Wooster

McNair Scholars Journal

In the eighteenth and nineteenth-centuries attempts at gaining national and political recognition through the work of Uniate priests in Transylvania and secular intellectuals in the Regat eventually culminated in the 1848 revolution, leading to the recognition of an autonomous Romanian state in 1878. Romania was further enlarged at the end of World War I with the Treaty of Trianon. Along the path to nationhood nationalism took on an ever-increasing exclusivity. Using Romania as a case study, this article addresses how nationalism occasionally becomes murderous. More specifically it addresses the origins of Romanian nationalism and how it influenced Romania’s support of …

Little is known about factors that influence willingness to engage in treatment for attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). From 2007 to 2008, in the context of a longitudinal study assessing ADHD detection and service use in the United States, we simultaneously elicited ADHD treatment perceptions from four stakeholder groups: adolescents, parents, health care professionals and teachers. We assessed their willingness to use ADHD interventions and views of potential undesirable effects of two pharmacological (short- and long-acting ADHD medications) and three psychosocial (ADHD education, behavior therapy, and counseling) treatments. In multiple regression analysis, willingness was found to be significantly related to respondent …

The Friendly Yeti, Daniel S. Capper Jan 2012

The Friendly Yeti, Daniel S. Capper

Faculty Publications

Most images of yetis in Western popular culture and scholarly literature portray them as secular, predatory monsters. These representations overlook important religious dimensions of yetis that are hidden in the current literature, so I take a new look at yetis in Tibetan religions in order to clarify our understanding of these legendary creatures. Following a phenomenological approach that sets aside the issue of the ontological existence of yetis, I examine texts, art, ritual, and folklore in order to propose four yeti personal ideal types: the Buddhist practitioner, the human religious ally, the friendly yeti, and the mountain deity yeti. These …

English Faculty Publications

This study examines low-stakes, written commentaries from a graduate counseling course to better understand the role writing plays in the transition from being a student to becoming a professional practitioner. The cross disciplinary research team used methods from Grounded Theory to analyze 60 commentaries and found that: (1) low-stakes, reflective writing revealed changes in self-awareness from Situational Self-Knowledge to Pattern Self-Knowledge (Weinstein & Alschuler, 1985); (2) low-stakes writing provided evidence of students connecting personally to learning and then connecting learning to professional practice; and (3) low-stakes writing encouraged the instructor to make mid-course adjustments to his teaching methods. This study …

Coming of age during the Jim Crow period of the South, she was the daughter of a Baptist minister and a teacher and grew up comfortably as a part of the black middle class. The descendant of two white grandparents, her bi-racialism formed her early awareness of colorism within the African-American community. Alexander received her Bachelor of Arts from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical University before going on to become the first African-American woman to graduate from Columbia Law School in 1945. The Legal Mobilization Dilemma, Douglas Nejaime Jan 2012

The Legal Mobilization Dilemma, Douglas Nejaime

Emory Law Journal

Perry v. Brown, the federal lawsuit challenging Proposition 8--the California state constitutional amendment prohibiting marriage for same-sex couples--was filed in 2009. At that time, it presented sweeping federal constitutional claims for marriage equality and sought to ultimately put those claims before the U.S. Supreme Court. The suit defied the strategic vision of lawyers at the leading lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) legal organizations--Lambda Legal, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), the National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR), and Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders (GLAD). Those lawyers had attempted to keep the federal courts away from Proposition 8 and …

Sexual Behaviour Among Male Methamphetamine And Heroin Dependents Attending Drug Rehabilitation Clinic / Mohd Fadzli Mohamad Isa, Mohamad Isa Mohd Fadzli

Student Works (2010-2019)

The debates about associations between drugs use and sex have been going on for decades. Drugs use and sex are mediums of pleasure and bring about sense of euphoria and enjoyment. Illicit drugs use has evolved from natural-based drugs such as opiates and cannabis to synthetic-based substances such as amphetamine and methamphetamine. This evolution even modifies the motives of drug use from just a primary emotion-altering substance that cut the users on the loose into a substance that can increase enthusiasm, motivation and self-esteem. The effect of methamphetamine on sociability and emotional loosening effects of heroin has increased their use …

Student Works (2010-2019)

Electronic Data Interchange has been in use from the early 1960s and has evolved over the last 50 years to include Internet EDI. Even though EDI has a long history, it is still very much in use today by major US and European automotive industry and the energy, healthcare, retail and manufacturing sectors. This is in spite of competing options from electronic procurement to enterprise resource systems. The main reason for its longevity is because it’s standards-based and its reliability has been proven through many years of commercial use. EDI has many benefits to offer its adopters. Notwithstanding this, businesses …

It had occupied a central place in the cultural and sociopolitical agendas of intellectual and social movements, and state actors in the Islamic world and Iran since the 19th century. This study is a theoretical analysis of Iranian Muslim intellectuals’ encounter with Islam and modernity. Student Works (2010-2019)

This study is an interdisciplinary research that analyses written discourses in natural history through the genre analysis’ lens. Genres are explored and examined by drawing on insights gathered from different disciplines such as linguistics, communication and environmental humanities. Data collected comprise a corpus of selected natural history texts published by the Malaysian Nature Society, Malaysia’s oldest non-governmental environmental and conservation body. Multiple conceptual and analytical models are combined to examine these resources from a socio-cognitive perspective: Bhatia’s (2004) multidimensional and multi-perspective model for professional discourse analysis and the notion of ‘generic integrity’; Tilden’s (1957) principles of interpretation; and Leftridge’s (2002) …

A Critical Discourse Analysis Of The Representation Of Donald Trump In The Guardian / Zainab Hamzah, Hamzah Zainab

Student Works (2010-2019)

Employing Ruth Wodak’s Discourse-Historical Approach (Wodak 2001), this research report analyzes the construction of negative-other representation of Donald Trump and his Golf Complex project in Balmedie, Scotland by The Guardian online. The e-news articles are examined for the strategies that are employed to construct a negativeother representation of Donald Trump, and the ways these strategies are linguistically realized. The ensuing findings reveal that eventhough The Guardian successfully constructs a negative-other representation of Donald Trump, his success in getting the planning permission for his golf project shows this hegemonic influence and power over the people of Scotland.

Therefore, in this study the researcher has chosen the “Brahmins Matrimony Website” (www.brahminsmatrimony.com) as the source of data collection. There are …
