Singing Japan’S Heart And Soul: A Discourse On The Black Enka Singer Jero And Race Politics In Japan, Neriko Musha Doerr, Yuri Kumagai
Singing Japan’S Heart And Soul: A Discourse On The Black Enka Singer Jero And Race Politics In Japan, Neriko Musha Doerr, Yuri Kumagai
East Asian Languages & Cultures: Faculty Publications
This article analyses a discourse around the ascendancy of Jero, an ‘African-American’ male dressed in hip-hop attire singing enka, a genre of music that has been dubbed ‘the heart and soul of Japan.’ Since his debut in Japan in February 2008, Jero has attracted much media attention. This article analyses a prominent discourse, ‘Jero is almost Japanese because he sings enka well.’ While many argue that to challenge stereotypes and racism is to introduce alternative role models, we show that such alternative role models can also reinforce the existing regime of difference of Japanese vs. the Other and perpetuate …

Factors Influencing Choice Of College Major: What Really Makes A Difference?, Jill Edmonds
Factors Influencing Choice Of College Major: What Really Makes A Difference?, Jill Edmonds
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to identify factors that are most influential to students when deciding their academic major. During the Spring 2012 semester students from the Rowan University subject pool and other classes (n = 60) participated in an online survey. Using a Likert scale, from 1 being extremely influential to 4 being not at all influential, participants were asked to rank a list of factors that may have influenced their decision of college major. All factors were then grouped into three subtypes of influences (practical, interpersonal, and personal) to determine where the greatest influence on students today …
Academic Enablers And Dance: A Correlation Study, Kacey Burke
Academic Enablers And Dance: A Correlation Study, Kacey Burke
Theses and Dissertations
This study surveyed 24 teenagers who took part in extracurricular dancing to determine if there is a relationship between the number of hours they spent dancing and their levels of academic enablers. Academic enablers are qualities that have been identified to predict student academic success in school (DiPerna, 2006). This study addressed an ongoing debate among many parents: Does children's time-consuming involvement in extracurricular activities take away from their academic success, and how much is too much? The participants were asked to complete the Academic Competency Evaluation Scales (ACES) to determine their levels of academic enabling behaviors. They also were …

Job affect, mobility, and labor market conditions have long been studied as predictors of employee turnover. While these relations have been strongly supported, there are a number of other factors that have not been considered within the turnover literature. In particular, the means by which individuals develop labor market perceptions via referent others and how this influences turnover have not been examined. This dissertation explores employee turnover by integrating the social contagion literature with that of social networks, examining the effects that network characteristics, such as number of ties, degree of closeness with ties, and frequency of communication with ties, have …

Homicide By Neighborhood: Mapping New York City’S Violent Crime Drop, Preeti Chauhan, Lauren Kois
Homicide By Neighborhood: Mapping New York City’S Violent Crime Drop, Preeti Chauhan, Lauren Kois
Publications and Research
Researchers, scholars, and policymakers interested in the falling rate of violent crime in New York City (NYC) have attempted to pinpoint causes of the welcome trend. Discovering the causes of the city’s crime drop may lead to important lessons for the city itself and may influence policy and practice throughout the state, nation, and perhaps other countries. Researchers have suggested a host of mechanisms that may explain the dramatic decline in violence, but two factors—misdemeanor policing and the transformation of drug markets—continue to receive the most attention. This report focuses on these factors in relation to gun-related homicide rates. It …

A Social Capital Model Of Public Relations: Development And Validation Of A Social Capital Measure, Melissa D. Dodd
A Social Capital Model Of Public Relations: Development And Validation Of A Social Capital Measure, Melissa D. Dodd
Open Access Dissertations
A theory and conceptualization of social capital as a resource- and exchange- based function of public relations was proposed. Fourteen hypotheses and one research question tested social capital propositions and postulates in a public relations-specific context, and a measure of social capital was created and tested alongside measures of human capital and organizational financial capital. A holistic model of social capital was tested using structural equation modeling such that human capital was hypothesized to predict social capital, human and social capital were hypothesized to predict public relations outcomes, and public relations outcomes were hypothesized to predict financial capital. It was …

Jamaica's Tourism: Sun, Sea And Sand To Cultural Heritage, Copeland A. Stupart, Robert Shipley
Jamaica's Tourism: Sun, Sea And Sand To Cultural Heritage, Copeland A. Stupart, Robert Shipley
Journal of Tourism Insights
Traditionally, Jamaica has been seen and promoted as a sun, sea and sand, winter get-away with foreign-owned, multinational corporations (MNCs) having a controlling interest. Coupled with this, the policies adopted by the state to encourage tourism infrastructural development protected the interests of the MNCs and were seen by many Jamaicans as not being in the best interest of their country. As a result, high levels of resentment existed and at times boiled into open conflict between tourists and the Jamaican working class who viewed tourists as ”confused white people.” While efforts were made to promote Jamaica’s tourism internationally, little was …

Surfing As Adventure Travel: Motivations And Lifestyles, Zachariah Reynolds, Nancy M. Hritz Dr.
Journal of Tourism Insights
The purpose of this study was to create a profile of the adventure traveler’s lifestyles, values and travel motivations. An understanding of the lifestyle and attitudes of today’s adventure traveler can aid tourism marketers in designing messages tailored to this unique target market. Differences and similarities between genders and the age cohorts of Generation Y, Generation X and Baby Boomers were examined. Across the sample most participated in a “traditional” type of sport before migrating to an adventure activity and they also engaged in more than one type of adventure activity.
Across the sample, the participants traveled in order to …

The Implications Of Behavioral Antitrust, Maurice Stucke
The Implications Of Behavioral Antitrust, Maurice Stucke
Scholarly Works
Behavioral economics is now mainstream. It is also timely. The financial crisis raised important issues of market failure, weak regulation, moral hazard, and our lack of understanding about how many markets actually operate.
As behavioral economics (with its more realistic assumptions of human behavior) goes mainstream in academia and the business world, one expects lawyers and economists to bring the current economic thinking to the competition agencies. How should the competition agencies respond?
This paper examines how competition authorities can consider the implications of behavioral economics on four levels: first as a gap filler, i.e., to help explain “real world” …
