Aging Offenders In The Criminal Justice System , Ronald H. Aday, Jennifer J. Krabill Aug 2012

Aging Offenders In The Criminal Justice System , Ronald H. Aday, Jennifer J. Krabill

Marquette Elder's Advisor

As America is graying, so is the prison population. This article discusses the variable ways police treat elderly offenders, often depending on the nature of their infractions. Courts also vary in their treatment of elderly offenders. The greatest future challenges may be in the area of providing (and paying for) adequate health care programs for elderly inmates, especially those with mental health problems.

New Standards For The Involuntary Commitment Of The Mentally Ill: "Danger" Redefined, Elizabeth A. Mcguan Aug 2012

New Standards For The Involuntary Commitment Of The Mentally Ill: "Danger" Redefined, Elizabeth A. Mcguan

Marquette Elder's Advisor

McGuan's article examines the way legislatures have amended their involuntary commitment statutes to allow for the more aggressive commitment of the mentally ill. The article discusses whether the definition of dangerous conduct in an Illinois amendment deprives a mentally ill person of a fundamental liberty interest guaranteed by the Constitution. The article begins with an overview of mental health law in the United States since World War II, followed by an analysis of the constitutionality of the Illinois amendment.

Beyond Gdp: Modelling Labour Supply As A ‘Free Time’ Trade-Off In A Multiregional Optimal Growth Model, Valentina Bosetti, Frédéric Ghersi Aug 2012

Beyond Gdp: Modelling Labour Supply As A ‘Free Time’ Trade-Off In A Multiregional Optimal Growth Model, Valentina Bosetti, Frédéric Ghersi

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

In this paper we develop the standard utility function of a Ramsey-type optimal growth model to account for a ‘market-time’ vs. ‘free-time’ trade-off. To do so, we introduce a free-time preference coefficient that measures the utility gained by deviating from a maximum labour supply defined as the combination of a 95% labour force participation rate for the 20 to 69 year-old population, and 3000 annual working hours (50 effective 60-hour weeks). We calibrate this free-time preference coefficient for 12 world regions on statistical and projected data from the United Nations, the International Labour Organisation and the OECD. We illustrate a …

Does Corporate Social Responsibility Affect The Performance Of Firms?, Nicola Comincioli, Laura Poddi, Sergio Vergalli Aug 2012

Does Corporate Social Responsibility Affect The Performance Of Firms?, Nicola Comincioli, Laura Poddi, Sergio Vergalli

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

Over the last two decades in OECD countries an increasing number of firms are obtaining certification as Socially Responsible (CSR is the acronym for Corporate Social Responsibility). Several studies (including Preston and O’Bannon, 1997; Waddock and Graves, 1997; McWilliams and Sieger, 2001; Ullman, 1985) have sought to test whether there is a relation between Social Responsibility certification and firm performance. Our work builds a CSR index that intersects two of the three main international indices (Domini 400 Social Index, Dow Jones Sustainability World Index, FTSE4Good Index), in order to overcome some problems related to the multiplicity of CSR definitions and …

Citation Success Over Time: Theory Or Empirics?, David W. Johnston, Marco Piatti, Benno Torgler Aug 2012

Citation Success Over Time: Theory Or Empirics?, David W. Johnston, Marco Piatti, Benno Torgler

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

This study investigates the citation patterns of theoretical and empirical papers over a period of almost 30 years, while also exploring the determinants of citation success. The results indicate that empirical papers attract more citation success than theoretical studies. However, the pattern over time is very similar with yearly mean citations peaking after around 4 years. Moreover, among empirical papers it appears that the cross-country studies are more successful than single country studies focusing on North America data or other regions.

Officialization And Linguistic Acculturation Of Spanish In The United States Catholic Church, Antonio Medina-Rivera Aug 2012

Officialization And Linguistic Acculturation Of Spanish In The United States Catholic Church, Antonio Medina-Rivera

World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Faculty Publications

The present investigation brings to light some of the changes associated with the use of English and Spanish in the US Catholic Church. The first part is an examination of the process of officialization from a historical perspective, acknowledging the impact of some groups or associations in the use of vernacular la!_lguages within the Church. The second part examines the role of acculturation during this process of officialization; and the final section analyzes the use of inclusive language in the Church, as an attempt to have a more gender-balanced institution. These three elements serve to provide a more complete perspective …

Communication Activity In A Social Network: Relation Between Long-Term Correlations And Inter-Event Clustering, Diego Rybski, Sergey V. Buldyrev, Shlomo Havlin, Fredrik Liljeros, Hernán A. Makse Aug 2012

Communication Activity In A Social Network: Relation Between Long-Term Correlations And Inter-Event Clustering, Diego Rybski, Sergey V. Buldyrev, Shlomo Havlin, Fredrik Liljeros, Hernán A. Makse

Publications and Research

Human communication in social networks is dominated by emergent statistical laws such as non-trivial correlations and temporal clustering. Recently, we found long-term correlations in the user's activity in social communities. Here, we extend this work to study the collective behavior of the whole community with the goal of understanding the origin of clustering and long-term persistence. At the individual level, we find that the correlations in activity are a byproduct of the clustering expressed in the power-law distribution of inter-event times of single users, i.e. short periods of many events are separated by long periods of no events. On the …

What Are Parents' Opinions Towards Their Children's Transition From School To Adulthood?, Michelle Moore Aug 2012

What Are Parents' Opinions Towards Their Children's Transition From School To Adulthood?, Michelle Moore

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to determine if training affected parent attitudes towards the transition planning process. Twenty-one parent volunteers participated in this study. Parents answered survey questions about their attitudes before attending two training sessions. A second survey was then completed to determine if there was a significant difference in responses after training. A pre-post survey design was used where means were compared using ANOVA. The results showed a statistical significant difference in question 6 "I know that my child has a behavior plan" in favor of the training, and no significances between pre-post responses to other questions.

The Journal Project And The I In Qualitative Research: Three Theoretical Lenses On Subjectivity And Self, Judith Davidson Aug 2012

The Journal Project And The I In Qualitative Research: Three Theoretical Lenses On Subjectivity And Self, Judith Davidson

The Qualitative Report

From the beginnings of qualitative research in the late 19th century to today, researchers have struggled to make sense of the notion of self or subjectivity; in other words, the I in the research. We ask ourselves: Who is the researcher? How is their notion of self present during research? How is research a site for contested notions of self? Who is the I in qualitative research?

Ouch! Recruitment Of Overweight And Obese Adolescent Boys For Qualitative Research, Zachary Morrison, David Gregory, Steven Thibodeau, Jennifer Copeland Aug 2012

Ouch! Recruitment Of Overweight And Obese Adolescent Boys For Qualitative Research, Zachary Morrison, David Gregory, Steven Thibodeau, Jennifer Copeland

The Qualitative Report

The purpose of this study is to examine the complexities of recruiting overweight and obese adolescent boys for qualitative research, discuss specific recruitment considerations for this population, and offer guidance to researchers interested in recruiting overweight adolescent boys. Three overweight adolescent boys and six community professionals participated in this study. Data collection methods included fieldwork observations (60 hours) and person-centered interviews (N=9). Emergent themes revealed that establishing trust, understanding the sensitivities of discussing obesity, and considering adolescent boys’ fears of sharing personal information may have enhanced recruitment success. Researchers should consider the importance of building relationships with professionals who can …

Social Movements And Free Riders: Examining Resource Mobilization Theory Through The Bolivian Water War, J.P. Weismuller Aug 2012

Social Movements And Free Riders: Examining Resource Mobilization Theory Through The Bolivian Water War, J.P. Weismuller

The Macalester Review

Mancur Olson's free rider problem suggests that self-interested individuals would be more rational to abstain from rather than participate in collective action. This possibility is particularly problematic for social movement theories attempting to account for movement emergence. In this essay, I critique resource mobilization theory's solution to Olson's problem, arguing that its "elite support hypothesis" cannot account for the emergence of entirely grassroots movements. However, through an analysis of the Bolivian Water War, I ultimately suggest that resource mobilization theory can be salvaged. I claim that a distinction between "vertical" and "horizontal" organizations allows resource mobilization theory to maintain its …

Kickstart, A Targeted Assessment, Discovery, And Population Of Selected Departments On Campus, Barbara Strauss Aug 2012

Kickstart, A Targeted Assessment, Discovery, And Population Of Selected Departments On Campus, Barbara Strauss

Digital Commons Great Lakes User Group Annual Meeting

Through the generous support of Provost Geoffrey Mearns, the Kickstart service was purchased for Cleveland State University’s implementation of Digital Commons, EngagedScholarship@CSU. This outstanding service provided two types of resources to help our repository get off to a quick start. Since our training in early March 2012, we have already entered 1,191 documents and 94 associated SelectedWorks pages. We initially identified 10 departments/units on campus that produced abundant scholarly works. These departments and faculty were targeted for a scan for works in the Web of Knowledge. When results were revealed, we narrowed the field to four units. The works …

Bias Crime And Minority Threat, Michele Stacey Aug 2012

Bias Crime And Minority Threat, Michele Stacey

Dissertations

Beginning in the 1980s, the term hate crime became part of the research canon of criminologists across the United States. Researchers have examined the characteristics of hate crime victims, offenders, and offenses. However, little is known about the context of hate crime, and more specifically about the ways that the changing demographics of the United States have contributed to hate crime. The dissertation examines the relationship between these demographic shifts and the trend in hate crime from 2000 to 2007 through the use of population averaged panel models. These models assess changes over time and across place in the number …

I Am Error, Nathan Altice Aug 2012

I Am Error, Nathan Altice

Theses and Dissertations

I Am Error is a platform study of the Nintendo Family Computer (or Famicom), a videogame console first released in Japan in July 1983 and later exported to the rest of the world as the Nintendo Entertainment System (or NES). The book investigates the underlying computational architecture of the console and its effects on the creative works (e.g. videogames) produced for the platform. I Am Error advances the concept of platform as a shifting configuration of hardware and software that extends even beyond its ‘native’ material construction. The book provides a deep technical understanding of how the platform was programmed …

Managing Information: Lessons For The 21st Century, Robert Hallis Aug 2012

Managing Information: Lessons For The 21st Century, Robert Hallis

SIDLIT Conference

Managing Information has become a buzz-word in objectives and courses, but how does this differ from "Library Instruction?" In an age where students are expected to demonstrate their familiarity with a topic through assessments other than a term paper, Information Literacy becomes more than learning traditional library skills. Library instruction typically involves showing students how to find peer reviewed articles for an academic paper. However, students are writing fewer papers and demonstrating their competence through their use of a growing array of social media; including discussion boards, mashups, and Skype. Acceptable sources have moved from merely published peer-reviewed scholarly documents …

Returning To Post-Katrina New Orleans: Exploring The Processes, Barriers, And Decision-Making Of African Americans, Kim Mosby Aug 2012

Returning To Post-Katrina New Orleans: Exploring The Processes, Barriers, And Decision-Making Of African Americans, Kim Mosby

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This qualitative case study explores the post-Katrina experiences of African Americans in Houston and in New Orleans. When the levees failed, residents from New Orleans were scattered across the country. Houston housed the largest population of displaced low-income African Americans from New Orleans. As the rebuilding process began, housing, employment, education, and healthcare policies in New Orleans changed. These institutional changes employed urban revitalization and poverty removal strategies adapted to disaster recovery. This study differs from previous research by examining these changes with an intersectional approach. It explores how African Americans frame obstacles as they attempt to return to a …

The Relationship Between Legal And Extra-Legal Factors: How Judges Come To Make Their Decisions In Domestic Violence Cases, Ioulia Koublitskaia Aug 2012

The Relationship Between Legal And Extra-Legal Factors: How Judges Come To Make Their Decisions In Domestic Violence Cases, Ioulia Koublitskaia

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research is to understand how Trial Court Judges in state and city courts make decisions in domestic violence cases. The researcher examined the relationship between legal (e.g., evidence) and extra-legal factors (e.g., preconceived biases and behaviors related to judicial decision-making) using a qualitative research design. A case study of multiple locations in Orleans and Jefferson Parishes was used whereby a purposive sample of 17 current civil, municipal, and criminal court judges were interviewed. Judicial decision-making strategies were studied via face-to-face interviews, courtroom observations, and content analysis of courtroom communications (e.g., speech, written text, interviews, images, etc.). …

Not Just A Symbol But A Status Symbol, Summer D. Winston Aug 2012

Not Just A Symbol But A Status Symbol, Summer D. Winston

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

I create art, not out of a deep understanding of the world around me, but out of a lack of one. Human psychology, motives, behaviors, stressors, intentions and identity are the themes that boggle me the most. Therefore, it is only natural that my work would be fueled by the questions these themes pose. In the past I sought to understand what pushes people to make certain choices and how can the world around us affect the formation of identity. Currently I wonder about identity in terms of what do people use to form and reinforce identity both real and …

English In Iranian Magazine Advertising, Robert J. Baumgardner, Kimberley Brown

Applied Linguistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

In the thirty-two years since the Islamic Revolution occurred in Iran, economic and cultural globalization have affected the role of English in multiple domains in the country. Within the domain of advertising, shifts have occurred throughout the history of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Persian scholars have attributed the source of these shifts to tension between local and global identities and to shifts in government advertising policy. This paper explores a data set of 335 advertisements taken from magazines from the period 2006–2008. We contrast borrowings and language display and explore language use in the six parts of the advertisements. …
