Franco's Children: Representations Of Franco-Era Childhood In Contemporary Spanish Literature And Cinema, Miaowei Weng

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

This study explores the politicization of "Franco's children" in El sur : 1981;1983), El florido pensil : 1994), Habíamos ganado la guerra: 2007), and La gloria de los niños: 2007). The phrase "Franco's children," on the one hand, implies the status of the authors and filmmakers as those who survived the early Franco regime as children and recall their childhood as adults; on the other hand, it refers to the child protagonists in the selected works that are set in wartime and the post-War period. Prospects And Challenges Of Prison Libraries In Ghana: A Case Study Of The Nsawam Medium Security Prisons., Christopher Mfum

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

ABSTRACT

The study explored the provision of library services at the Nsawam Medium Security Prison in Ghana. Incarcerated people are confronted with isolation and are often faced with limitations of personal choices and quality decision making. Library services remain an important service in every society that values freedom. The prison library is one of the few places that offer solace and escape in the extremely regulated lives of prisoners. The report is the result of a study into the information needs of prisoners and the resources and services that are available for this special population. A total of 100 male …

Science On Law's Terms: Implications Of Procedural Legitimacy On Scientific Evidence, Nayha Acharya Aug 2012

Science On Law's Terms: Implications Of Procedural Legitimacy On Scientific Evidence, Nayha Acharya

LLM Theses

Scientific evidence is relied on more and more in litigation. Discussions and debates aimed at enabling courts to make the best use scientific evidence are increasingly critical. This thesis adds the perspective of procedural legitimacy to the science and law discussion. Procedural Legitimacy is the concept that consistent adherence to legal procedure maintains the overall legitimacy of the legal system, and the validity of its outcomes. I argue that the integrity of legal procedures must be maintained where scientific evidence is presented, so that judicial decisions that rely on scientific evidence are legitimate.

Materialism And Life Satisfaction Among Older People In Hong Kong : A Case Study And Comparison With Younger People, Yau Tsang Chan

Lingnan Theses

The rapidly ageing global population reminds us to pay attention to the psychology of ageing. As research on materialism among older people is rare, this study aimed to explore the relationships between materialism and life satisfaction among older people in Hong Kong, a rapidly ageing Chinese society. It also suggested a novel concept – intergenerational material expectations (IME) – to understand older people’s material expectations regarding their children. The data were compared with a younger group to find out if age differences existed. The study was a survey design among two age groups: older people aged 65+ and younger people …

Apple-Polishers, Ass-Kissers And Suck-Ups: Towards A Sociology Of Ingratiation, Daniel D. Martin, Janelle L. Wilson Aug 2012

Apple-Polishers, Ass-Kissers And Suck-Ups: Towards A Sociology Of Ingratiation, Daniel D. Martin, Janelle L. Wilson

The Qualitative Report

In this paper we use one form of communicative action, “brownnosing”, as a social lens for understanding power relations in both formal, organizational contexts and interpersonal relationships. We investigate this phenomenon by assessing processes of ingratiation at school and work settings. We do so using data collected from over one hundred student respondents to ascertain the meanings, uses, and outcomes of brownnosing. The study finds that members of the “millennial generation” develop skills in both the act of brownnosing and the detection of this form of communication as they participate in a variety of contexts, including family, school, work, and …

The Qualitative Report

This article examines middle schoolers’ perspectives on their lives in middle school. Fifteen middle school students from three middle schools in the Southeast region of the United States participated in a basic qualitative study using focus groups at their schools where they were asked the central question, “If you could change one thing at your middle school, what would it be?” Findings show that students’ desire caring teachers, students want active classrooms, and students’ technology use impacts attitudes towards learning. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to illustrate that conceptual frameworks developed from a general theory of competition, i.e. resourceadvantage (R-A) theory, can facilitate managerial action. Design/methodology/approach – After a brief overview of resource-advantage (R-A) theory, five conceptual frameworks are developed and offered for the purposes of managerial action. Findings – This paper identifies several conceptual frameworks and after noting that conceptual frameworks that do not have positive theoretical foundations may not be as useful as those that do, develops five conceptual frameworks that are based on R-A theory. Practical implications – The conceptual frameworks developed in this …

Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) is a signific.ant concern within the Black community and, in particular, for Black women. Attracting Talent Across Cultures: The Impact Of Cultural Values On Generating And Maintaining Applicants, Emily Twichell

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

The current study investigated whether different strategies for attracting and maintaining applicants should be used in order to effectively recruit talent from different cultures, which had not been previously researched. It was predicted that culture would have a direct impact on what attracts individuals to apply to an organization, what causes them not to submit an application, and the length of time between submitting an application and being invited to interview. Additionally, it was predicted that culture would interact with perceptions of job posting content, application length, recruiter perceptions, and time delays in predicting job pursuit intentions and changes in …

Music: A Portrait Of Woman, Amy R. Wellman Aug 2012

Music: A Portrait Of Woman, Amy R. Wellman

Communication

Music in today's society is ubiquitous. It is in the car, the cinema, on television, in the doctor's office, in the home, on the other end of the phone; it really is everywhere. Music arguably is a large part of culture and as such, has the ability to construct social realities. In hopes to understand how media constructs the image of the female, a contextual analysis was performed on the lyrics of the top twenty-five country and pop songs according to Billboard.com. This was done using Grounded Theory through the employment of coding. Results showed that although country and pop …

More than two hundred people came to the symposium from all over the United States and as far away as Spain and Israel. they were not just academics, but artists, musicians, writers, and many others who had been touched by Sedgwick's work. Within BU, faculty members from across the university prepared for the symposium by assigning Sedgwick's work in courses …
