Interlanguage Pragmatic Development In Native Speaker/Nonnative Speaker Participatory Online Environments, Adrienne Gonzales Aug 2012

Interlanguage Pragmatic Development In Native Speaker/Nonnative Speaker Participatory Online Environments, Adrienne Gonzales

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

This dissertation seeks to discover the ways in which participation in an online social networking site affects interlanguage pragmatic development. Livemocha is an online social network centered around language learning that emphasizes the collaboration required in constructing language. This social networking site encourages learners to establish an identity through their user profiles and to reach out to other members through email, text-based chat, video chat, or peer-reviewed lessons. This study examines interaction in text-based chat between native speakers (NSs) and language learners of Spanish in this environment. Conversations were collected from seven participants over the course of one academic year …

How Common Citizens Transform Politics: The Cases Of Mexico And Bolivia, Rebeca Jasso-Aguilar Aug 2012

How Common Citizens Transform Politics: The Cases Of Mexico And Bolivia, Rebeca Jasso-Aguilar

Sociology ETDs

In this dissertation I compare the trajectories of two social movements against neoliberalism: the 2000 movement that successfully challenged the privatization of water in Cochabamba, Bolivia, and the movement that unsuccessfully challenged the results of the Mexican presidential election in 2006. I utilize Gramscis theory to examine neoliberalism as a passive revolution, and I apply concepts drawn from Buci-Glucksman's work on Gramsci's understanding of the State to examine these movements as 'anti-passive revolutions' and projects of radical democracy. My core argument holds that, despite emerging from quite divergent historical settings and socio-political contexts, these two movements against neoliberalism converged on …

Situational And Individual Predictors Of Violent Intentions: A Factorial Survey Approach, Dale Willits Aug 2012

Situational And Individual Predictors Of Violent Intentions: A Factorial Survey Approach, Dale Willits

Sociology ETDs

Though many criminological perspectives suggest that violence is the result of both individual and situational factors, the majority of criminological research focuses narrowly on individual-level factors. The current study contributes to the literature by utilizing a factorial survey design to examine both the independent and interactive effects of situational and individual predictors of violent behavioral intentions. This factorial survey presented college respondents with randomly generated versions of a hypothetical situation depicting interpersonal conflict and also gathered data about a variety of individual level factors known to predict violence. In order to improve the validity of the factorial survey method, the …

Across Lands: Double Consciousness And Negotiating Identities In Early Chinese American Literature, 1847-1910s, Ying Xu Aug 2012

Across Lands: Double Consciousness And Negotiating Identities In Early Chinese American Literature, 1847-1910s, Ying Xu

English Language and Literature ETDs

This dissertation analyzes the works of three early Chinese immigrant writers (Yung Wing, Yan Phou Lee, and Wong Chin Foo) and two mixed race writers (Edith Eaton and Winnifred Eaton) in late nineteenth-century and early twentieth-century North America in order to critique the formation of early Chinese American literature. Borrowing W. E. B. Du Boiss construct of double consciousness and Amy Ling's theory of between worlds, I argue that the complicated double consciousness exhibited in the works of these early immigrant writers demonstrates their across lands strategies of negotiating identities prior to and during the Exclusion Era (1882-1943). My formulation …

Church-State Ties, Roman Catholic Episcopacies, And Human Rights In Latin America, Nicholas Rowell Aug 2012

Church-State Ties, Roman Catholic Episcopacies, And Human Rights In Latin America, Nicholas Rowell

Political Science ETDs

From the 1960s through the 1980s, Latin America's Catholic bishops' conferences diverged in their responses to state sanctioned human rights abuse. At the national level, some bishops' conferences played leadership roles in nascent human rights movements, others delayed public criticism while pursuing private human rights advocacy, and still others responded with silence or public support for repressive governments. Why? To answer this question, this study presents comparative case studies of the Catholic Church in Argentina, Chile, and Brazil with secondary comparative case studies of Colombia, El Salvador, and Guatemala. Drawing on the theoretical perspective of path dependence, I argue that …

High Road Development In A Low Tech Industry: Policymakers, Producer Networks, And The Co-Production Of Innovation In The Mexican Ceramics Sector, Steven Samford Aug 2012

High Road Development In A Low Tech Industry: Policymakers, Producer Networks, And The Co-Production Of Innovation In The Mexican Ceramics Sector, Steven Samford

Political Science ETDs

When faced with the integration of international markets, some small producers in the developing world respond with low road' strategies that undermine wages and working conditions while others take the 'high road' to become globally competitive. Existing explanations — macroeconomic policy, human capital development, geography — are unable to account for this variation both across and within sectors. I address this variation by examining workshop-level responses to a government effort to develop and disseminate a lead-free glaze in the Mexican ceramics sector. Many producers have failed to adopt the glaze despite the fact that it promises to improve both their …

Intergroup Dialogues, Building Community And Relational Justice, Bennett M. Judkins

Catalyst: A Social Justice Forum

Intergroup Dialogues, Building Community and Relational Justice

Abstract

Research suggests that civic engagement in American communities and connections among their residents seem to be in decline. With demographic changes indicating a greater population diversity, many are concerned about the social fabric that binds people together. One solution offered in the last two decades is engagement in intergroup dialogues - efforts to bring diverse populations into face-to-face facilitated conversations that attempt to craft better understanding, stronger relationships, and possible social action. This paper will look at the current research on "intergroup dialogues" to address three questions. First, why might such dialogues …

Gather At The Table: The Healing Journey Of A Daughter Of Slavery And A Son Of The Slave Trade, Thomas Norman Dewolf, Sharon Leslie Morgan Aug 2012

Gather At The Table: The Healing Journey Of A Daughter Of Slavery And A Son Of The Slave Trade, Thomas Norman Dewolf, Sharon Leslie Morgan

Catalyst: A Social Justice Forum

ABSTRACT

Two people from diverse backgrounds — a black woman and a white man — embarked upon a three-year “healing journey” to attempt to overcome the trauma of historic harms brought on by America’s legacy of slavery and the lingering effects of present-day racism. Illustrated through the stories of their lives—and those of their ancestors — Gather at the Table is informed by trauma healing, restorative justice, and peacebuilding skills the authors learned through their work at Eastern Mennonite University and its STAR (Strategies for Trauma Awareness and Resilience) and Coming to the Table programs. EMU is an acclaimed resource …

Race, Memory, And Historical Responsibility: What Do Southerners Do With A Difficult Past?, Larry J. Griffin, Peggy G. Hargis

Catalyst: A Social Justice Forum

Newly emerging, transitional societies –– that is, societies that traded dictatorial or authoritarian rule for some form of open or liberal polity –– face at least three interdependent problems of what is called in legal scholarship and social science “transitional justice”: the first is how (if at all) to hold the old regime’s autocratic, often violence-laden leadership responsible for its wrongdoings while in power; the second is what (if anything) to do with thousands upon thousands of ordinary folk whose participation in, or compliance with, the old regime helped legitimate and thus perpetuate the wrongdoing; and the third task how …

Conceptualizing Mental Health: A Qualitative Study On Mexican Immigrant Mothers' Definition Of Their Children's Mental Health In New Mexico, Cirila Estela Vasquez Guzman Aug 2012

Conceptualizing Mental Health: A Qualitative Study On Mexican Immigrant Mothers' Definition Of Their Children's Mental Health In New Mexico, Cirila Estela Vasquez Guzman

Sociology ETDs

Parents play a significant role in many areas of their childrens mental health, including understanding the concept, detection, utilization, and treatment options. Despite the importance of parents' role, there is relatively little research in the United States on Latino parents' conceptualization of the term mental health. This study focuses on understanding conceptualization patterns of children's mental health among low-income Mexican immigrant mothers. I utilize the social construction framework to investigate the social nature of the construct mental health. I also engage with the medicalization literature to shed light on the biomedical model's perspective on mental health. Nine focus groups were …

Home-School Relationships: A Qualitative Study With Diverse Families, Betty Cardona, Sachin Jain, Kathy Canfield-Davis Aug 2012

Home-School Relationships: A Qualitative Study With Diverse Families, Betty Cardona, Sachin Jain, Kathy Canfield-Davis

The Qualitative Report

This qualitative case study explored how families from diverse cultural backgrounds understood family involvement in the context of early childhood care and educational settings. Participants in the study included nine members from six families who had children enrolled in three early childhood care and education programs. The primary method of data collection included in-depth interviews with the parents of these children. A second data source was obtained through non-participant observations in each of the three programs. Findings revealed that the way families understand parent involvement is strongly influenced by issues of ethnicity, social class, level of education, and language.

Exploring The Links Between Qualitative Inquiry And Global Crises: Some Answers And More Questions, Izhar Oplatka Aug 2012

Exploring The Links Between Qualitative Inquiry And Global Crises: Some Answers And More Questions, Izhar Oplatka

The Qualitative Report

Reading an edited book such as Denzin and Giardina’s 2011 Qualitative Inquiry and Global Crisis that comprises different chapters and authorship patterns may be challenging and evocative, let alone a book that focus on qualitative inquiry in an era of globalization, racism, privatization, and social injustice. To make the journey of reviewing this new book enjoyable, I posed a meaningful guiding question to me: what could a book that links between qualitative inquiry and global crisis contribute to our theoretical and practical knowledge about the qualitative paradigm? The answer is not yes or no but rather manifold; some papers shed …

The Unfolding Of Methodological Identity: An Autobiographical Study Using Humor, Competing Voices, And Twists, James A. Bernauer Aug 2012

The Unfolding Of Methodological Identity: An Autobiographical Study Using Humor, Competing Voices, And Twists, James A. Bernauer

The Qualitative Report

This article explores my journey from quantitative to qualitative researcher, including the effects this journey has had on my identity as well as on those whom I previously referred to as “subjects”. “Identity” is examined from both an historical as well as from a self-dialogical, autobiographical perspective. Eleven “twists” that mark turning points and detours describe this journey, and this paper employs “voices” that offer contextual background and contradictory advice on the road towards methodological identity. These twists describe experiences as both teacher and student and readers are invited to join in this retrospective reflection in order to experience insights …
