The Challenges Of Oral History In The 21st Century: Diversity, Inequality And Identity Construction Using Online Video Oral Histories In University Courses Across The Curriculum, Gail Gradowski, Jill Goodman Gould

English

Thanks to the internet, educators now have unprecedented access to oral histories. We are examining the way that video oral histories can be used and integrated in various kinds of university courses. Now easily available to educators are a wide range of oral histories, from small collections like Ball State University's video interviews of 40 members of the U.S. Army's First Infantry Division from the Vietnam War to large archives of oral histories such the Densho Digital Archive of over 600 video interviews documenting the Japanese American internment during WWII. The variety is already impressive and it is growing very …

Motivation And Leadership Of Financial Advisor Associates In The Financial Services Industry, James A. Mckenzie

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

The purpose of this study was to apply the platform of existing knowledge and ideas in the area of sales management with regard to the motivation of financial advisor associates (FAAs) in the financial services industry in the United States. The major theories examined in this study were: social exchange theory, leader member exchange, expectancy theory, transformational leadership, and transactional leadership. The primary focus of this non-experimental, quantitative, explanatory (correlational) research was the relationships among the independent variables (psychological climate of the workplace, the branch manager's leadership style, the demographic factors and work experience of the FAAs), and the dependent …

Between The Mob And The Noose: The Lynching Intercessor In American Literature And Film, Abigail Thibault Horne Sep 2012

Between The Mob And The Noose: The Lynching Intercessor In American Literature And Film, Abigail Thibault Horne

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

In my dissertation, I note the frequent, post-Civil War presence of an individual character that opposes a lynch mob by interceding on behalf of the intended lynching victim. I argue that this figure, which I term the lynching intercessor, is a trope for racial reconciliation in American literature and film. The intercessor works to mediate between loyalty to an ideal democracy and recognition of a past and present that is inextricable from violent, racist oppression. While the lynching intercessor often negotiates the prevention of violence, the intercessor also re-imbues the professional, white: and, usually, male) individual as the rightful embodiment …

Causal Modeling, Reversibility, And Logics Of Counterfactuals, Wai Yin Lam Sep 2012

Causal Modeling, Reversibility, And Logics Of Counterfactuals, Wai Yin Lam

Lingnan Theses

This thesis studies Judea Pearl’s logic of counterfactuals derived from the causal modeling framework, in comparison to the influential Stanlnaker-Lewis counterfactual logics.

My study focuses on a characteristic principle in Pearl’s logic, named reversibility. The principle, as Pearl pointed out, goes beyond Lewis’s logic. Indeed, it also goes beyond the stronger logic of Stanlnaker, which is more analogous to Pearl’s logic. The first result of this thesis is an extension of Stanlnaker’s logic incorporating reversibility. It will be observed that the translation of reversibility from Pearl’s language to the standard language for conditional logic deserves some attention. In particular, a …

A Comparison Of Nursing Homes In Rural And Urban Communities In Indiana, Michelle Emery Blake Mssw, Ph.D., Erin M. Fordyce, Hanns G. Pieper Sep 2012

A Comparison Of Nursing Homes In Rural And Urban Communities In Indiana, Michelle Emery Blake Mssw, Ph.D., Erin M. Fordyce, Hanns G. Pieper

Contemporary Rural Social Work Journal

The growing number of elderly persons in U.S. society—the “Graying of America”—increases the urgency of making available the resources needed to ensure optimum quality of life for all seniors. When families are no longer able to meet their loved one’s needs, it becomes necessary to consider the possibility of long-term care. Often, families face this decision without the information they need in order to make an informed choice. The researchers utilized a four-tiered categorization to compare nursing homes in most rural, rural, urban and most urban counties in Indiana. The Medicare website (http://www.medicare.gov/) addresses issues of staffing, number of Medicare/Medicaid …

Rehabilitation, Research, And Reform: Prison Policy In Ireland, Mary Rogan

Articles

The paper tracks the concept of rehabilitation within official thinking in

Ireland since the foundation of the State. It explores when and how the term was first

used and how it has fared since. It then examines barriers to and the role of research

in the making of prison policy and comments on data deficits in the system at present.

Finally it looks at the role of interest groups within the criminal justice system in

Ireland, and specifically their effect, or potential effect, on the formation of prison

policy.

Underside Of Independence Politics Filipino Reactions To Anti-Filipino Riots In The United States, Taihei Okada Sep 2012

Underside Of Independence Politics Filipino Reactions To Anti-Filipino Riots In The United States, Taihei Okada

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

Thisarticle reexamines the historical implications of Philippine independence politics in the first half of the 1930s. It looks into the reactions of Filipino elites toward the grave plight of Filipino migrants in the United States and the anti-Filipino riots there. Exclusion measures intended to bar the entry of Filipino migrants to the United States made it virtually impossible for Filipino elites to discuss these issues and confront American racism in their formal negotiations with the Americans. The absence of such confrontation left the benevolence of US colonialism unchallenged, even as the Philippines took a step closer to political independence.

Social Work In A Very Rural Place: A Study Of Practitioners In The Upper Peninsula Of Michigan, Paul Force-Emery Mackie Msw, Phd Sep 2012

Social Work In A Very Rural Place: A Study Of Practitioners In The Upper Peninsula Of Michigan, Paul Force-Emery Mackie Msw, Phd

Contemporary Rural Social Work Journal

This study focuses on characteristics, challenges, and benefits of practicing social work in the Upper Peninsula (UP) of Michigan. Using a mixed-methods design, data were analyzed to determine demographic descriptors, seek differences between groups, and learn why social workers pursue and remain in social service employment in the UP. In addition, challenges and benefits of rural practice and perceptions of living and working in this region are addressed. Quantitatively, differences were found between younger and older social workers regarding where they currently live and where they grew up, and whether or not they were raised in a rural location. Qualitative …

Memories Of Us Imperialism Narratives Of The Homeland In Filipino And Puerto Rican Homes In The United States, Faye C. Caronan Sep 2012

Memories Of Us Imperialism Narratives Of The Homeland In Filipino And Puerto Rican Homes In The United States, Faye C. Caronan

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

Thisarticle examines how institutionalized histories of the US as a benevolent colonial power are reproduced in Filipino and Puerto Rican homes in the United States, facilitated by parents’ adherence to these histories. However, US imperialism is justified differently: in the Philippines, through a narrative of rescue from Spain and the brutality of Japan as well as the gifts of democratic institutions; in Puerto Rico, through a narrative of cultural nationalism that foregrounds cultural independence and displaces the question of political independence. The performance poets in this study developed alternative histories and their associated artistic expressions in college rather than at …

The Inherent Instability Of The Financial System, Kim De Glossop Sep 2012

The Inherent Instability Of The Financial System, Kim De Glossop

The Journal of Business, Entrepreneurship & the Law

The article explores one of the causes of the financial crisis of 2008 and of financial crises generally. The argument of the paper is that rather than tend toward equilibrium, financial and asset markets have a tendency to become unstable after prolonged periods of stability. The main driver of this process is the expansion of credit. Debt feeds its way into higher asset prices which in turn justify the accumulation of more debt to purchase further assets, and so on. The basis for the idea is Hyman Minsky's Financial Instability Hypothesis, itself a reinterpretation of The General Theory of Employment, …

Human Geography And Behavior Analysis: An Application Of Behavior Analysis To The Explanation Of The Evolution Of Human Landscapes, William Norton Sep 2012

Human Geography And Behavior Analysis: An Application Of Behavior Analysis To The Explanation Of The Evolution Of Human Landscapes, William Norton

The Psychological Record

Human geography is a social science concerned primarily with data-based analyses and the utilization of various theoretical constructs mostly developed in other social science disciplines. A discussion of the character of human geography supports the suggestion that human geographic analyses of landscapes will benefit from employment of additional theories, specifically from a judicious interpretation and application of work in behavior analysis. Human landscape-making behavior can be explained using the concepts and principles of behavior analysis as developed in psychology and as applied in sociology and anthropology. For human geographers, this suggestion is at variance with most other recent conceptual contributions …
