Tornado Warnings In Three Southern States: A Qualitative Analysis Of Public Response Patterns, William Donner, Havidan Rodriguez, Walter Diaz
Sociology Faculty Publications
Recent research in three Southern states supplied data describing the role community structure and culture played in shaping public response to tornado risks. The following study identifies and describes how residents received, made sense of, and ultimately used information to make decisions about responding to warnings. In addition to a range of theoretical concerns, research was also intended to develop a set of safety policies derived from what the data reveals about the social psychology of risk perception, economic constraints to shelter, and the cultural aspects of response.Data analysis reveals a diverse set of social factors governing community response to …
Election Law Behind A Veil Of Ignorance, Chad Flanders
Election Law Behind A Veil Of Ignorance, Chad Flanders
Florida Law Review
Election law struggles with the question of neutrality, not only with its possibility—can election rules truly be neutral between parties?—but also with its definition. What does it mean for election laws to be “neutral”? This Article examines one form of election law neutrality, found in what it terms “veil of ignorance rules.” Such rules are formed in circumstances where neither party knows which rule will benefit its candidates in future elections.
This Article considers the existence of veil of ignorance rules in two recent election law controversies: the rule that write-in ballots must be spelled correctly (in the Lisa Murkowski …
Adapting Laws For A Changing World: A Systemic Approach To Climate Change Adaptation, Victor B. Flatt
Adapting Laws For A Changing World: A Systemic Approach To Climate Change Adaptation, Victor B. Flatt
Florida Law Review
This Essay suggests that policy responses in climate change adaptation must be addressed and that focusing on adapting laws may be a good way to undertake this work. Following a review of existing scholarship and normative theories concerning law generally, environmental law, climate change, and adaptation, this Essay then proposes a template for approaching the adaptation of laws. This template would (1) examine where climate change puts pressure on the operation of laws; (2) seek to alter the implementation of that law or to alter the law itself to hew closely to the law’s original purposes; and (3) make these …
Balancing Compassion And Risk In Climate Adaptation: U.S. Water, Drought, And Agricultural Law, Robert W. Adler
Balancing Compassion And Risk In Climate Adaptation: U.S. Water, Drought, And Agricultural Law, Robert W. Adler
Florida Law Review
It is inevitable that the world will experience a significant amount of global warming before efforts to mitigate the buildup of greenhouse gases (GHGs) in the atmosphere can even begin to succeed. Therefore, adaptation to climate change impacts, as well as mitigation, will be necessary to deal with climate disruption. In designing climate change adaptation efforts, a looming issue is how to balance the need and compassionate impulse to provide financial and other relief to victims of climate disruption impacts with the equally compelling need to reduce the overall risk of those impacts. U.S. water, drought, and agricultural law and …

Can Obama Win Re-Election? Demographics Vs. Economics In The 2012 Election, Ruy Texeira
Can Obama Win Re-Election? Demographics Vs. Economics In The 2012 Election, Ruy Texeira
Mosakowski Institute for Public Enterprise
Lincoln famously spoke of government “of the people, by the p eople, and for the people.” But who, exactly, are “the people”? Which demographic characteristics are the most politically significant? And who will actually turn out to vote? Dr. Ruy Teixeira, Senior Fellow at The Century Foundation and the Center for American Progress, will consider these questions against the backdrop of this year’s presidential campaign.

The Relationship Between Ethnic Identity And Chlamydia And Gonorrhea Infections Among Low-Income Detained African American Adolescent Females, Dexter R. Voisin
Faculty Scholarship
This study explored the relationship between ethnic identity and Chlamydia and Gonorrhea infections among detained African American female adolescents. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 123 African American female adolescents within eight detention facilities in Georgia. Using audio-computer assisted self-interviewing technology, data were collected on demographics, ethnic identity, laboratory-confirmed Chlamydia and Gonorrhea, and other known correlates for sexually transmitted infections (STIs), such as socioeconomic status, parental monitoring, and risky sexual behaviors. Rates of Chlamydia and Gonorrhea testing yielded incidence rates of 22.6% and 4.3%, respectively. Findings indicated that, controlling for STI correlates, participants who indicated high ethnic identity were 4.3 …

Social Construction Of False Necessities And The Material Basis Of Socio-Legal Power: A Reply To Irrationalism In Critical Legal Studies Critiques Identifying Latent Social Violence As A Potential New Material Foundation For Systematic Socio-Legal Theory, Samantha Godwin
Pace Law Review
This Article is deliberately unconventional and exploratory. It begins by raising many conceptually problematic questions which cannot be answered simply or definitively. The point is not to provide any one right answer for these questions but to raise possible directions for new lines of inquiry rather than accepting the theoretical dead end that is irrationalism. I do not necessarily hope to offer a new systemizing theory that can withstand rigorous critique, but rather to show that such attempts remain possible and worthwhile even after the influence of post-modernism and the deconstruction of the most significant social theories.

Former Gardner-Web Faculty Member Lansford Jolley Pens New Book, Office Of University Communications
Gardner-Webb NewsCenter Archive
Gardner-Webb University alumnus and retired faculty member Lansford Jolley’s new book, “The Coed’s Mite,” may be fiction, but it’s apparent that parts of the story, including characters, locations, and plotlines are based on reality and even some GWU history. Jolley, a native of Boiling Springs, N.C., served as the University’s chair of the Department of Social Sciences for 33 years, where he taught history, sociology, and marriage and family, before retiring in 1992. Aspects of his new book bring historical moments of Gardner-Webb to life through the lives of main characters, Thomas and Ann.
Decommissioning Orleans Parish Prison: A Campaign To Build A Safer New Orleans / One Local Policy Step To Dismantle The Prison Industrial Complex, Tara M. Echo
Capstone Collection
Today, nearly two and a half million people in the U.S. are living in cages, with New Orleans holding the highest per capita rate of incarceration. While we have consistently seen that building cages does not bring us any closer to actualizing safety, the sheriff and other city officials of New Orleans justify a financially profitable plan to create more cages-to warehouse more of the city's people-in the name of safety.
Using an abolitionist framework, this paper examines safety by differentiating between contributing factors of being secure and factors which create harm in our communities. By tracing these factors to …

The Push Factors For Corporate Social Responsibility: A Probit Analysis, Paolo Cominetti, Laura Poddi, Sergio Vergalli
The Push Factors For Corporate Social Responsibility: A Probit Analysis, Paolo Cominetti, Laura Poddi, Sergio Vergalli
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
In the last two decades in OECD countries there has been increased development of Social Responsible (CSR is the acronym of Corporate Social Responsibility) certified firms. This certification is assigned by public and private companies which guarantee that the behaviour of a certain firm is environmentally and sociologically correct. The first part of our work is devoted to establishing a certification index defined as the intersection of two of the three main international indices (Domini 400 Social Index, Dow Jones Sustainability World Index, FTSE4Good Index). The purpose of this is to overcome certain problems related to the multiplicity of CSR …
