Obtaining Consumer Perceptions Of External Costs Of “Cheap” Food Products And Analyzing Quality Food Markets That Minimize External Costs In Bloomington-Normal, Illinois, Jennifer Long '13 Nov 2012

Obtaining Consumer Perceptions Of External Costs Of “Cheap” Food Products And Analyzing Quality Food Markets That Minimize External Costs In Bloomington-Normal, Illinois, Jennifer Long '13

Outstanding Senior Seminar Papers

Today, the United States’ food system is primarily a large industrial operation with smaller-scale community-based food systems. Although the industrial food system has benefitted society by increasing the amount of food available for every person, some of these products are “cheap” food products that generate external costs, such as poor health, potential wealth loss to farmers and environmental degradation. With over 1 billion individuals on earth undernourished and 15.8% of all U.S. households as of 2010 food insecure [Patel, 2012], this system has not completely solved food issues. Community-based food systems, on the other hand, minimize external costs …

Abolitionist Animal Rights: Critical Comparisons And Challenges Within The Animal Rights Movement, Corey Lee Wrenn Nov 2012

Abolitionist Animal Rights: Critical Comparisons And Challenges Within The Animal Rights Movement, Corey Lee Wrenn

Animal Rights Movement Collection

The abolitionist movement is an emergent and radical approach to nonhuman animal rights. Calling for a complete cessation in nonhuman animal use through the abolishing of property status for nonhuman animals and an adoption of veganism and nonviolence, this approach stands in stark contrast to mainstream approaches such as humane production and welfare reform. This paper describes the goals and stances of abolitionism; the basic debate between abolitionism and other nonhuman animal rights movements; and the current state, challenges, and future prospects for abolitionism. It is argued that abolitionism, as developed by Francione, is the only morally consistent approach for …

Mobility Measures, Naomi Schoenbaum Nov 2012

Mobility Measures, Naomi Schoenbaum

BYU Law Review

Geographic mobility is a celebrated feature of American life. Deciding where to live is seen not only as a key personal freedom, but also a means of economic advancement. Millions of Americans move each year over great distances. But while this right to travel is safeguarded by the Constitution, these mobility decisions are not entirely free. In terms of the decision to move long distances, employment and family reasons are central, and a regime of employment and family law “mobility measures” play a significant role in regulating why and how we move. This Article first sets forth this new framework …

Comparing Current, Former And Never Users Of Natural Family Planning: An Analysis Of Demographic, Socioeconomic And Attitudinal Variables, Andrea Bertotti, Sinead M. Christensen

Sociology & Criminology Faculty Research

This project examines how women who currently use natural family planning (NFP), those who formerly used NFP, and those who have never used NFP compare along demographic, socioeconomic, and attitudinal variables. Bivariate analyses of data from the National Survey of Family Growth 2006–2010 (N = 10,598 female respondents) suggest that current NFP users varied socioeconomically and demographically from former NFP users, but differences were more prominent between current NFP users and never NFP users. In many cases, there was little variation between former NFP users and never NFP users. Current NFP users were less likely to be black and more …

What Brings You Pleasure? The Role Of Desire Within The Development Of Compulsive Purchasing, Justine Rapp Nov 2012

What Brings You Pleasure? The Role Of Desire Within The Development Of Compulsive Purchasing, Justine Rapp

College of Business: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This paper seeks to put forth two major contributions into marketing scholarship: (1) the role of desire within the development of compulsivity from impulsive consumptions, and (2) an assessment of compulsivity measurement scales. A mixed method design provides for both statistical and qualitative support for both contributions, for a deeper and replicated account of consumer behavior within the marketplace. First, we develop a possible path for the development of compulsivity, explaining impulsivity as an antecedent with consumer shopping desire as the driving factor. With this, we introduce the variable Consumer Shopping Desire as a quantified construct related to Belk et …

The Transition To Adulthood And Independence: A Study Of Young People Leaving Residential Care, Mary Kilkenny Nov 2012

The Transition To Adulthood And Independence: A Study Of Young People Leaving Residential Care, Mary Kilkenny

Masters

The transition to adulthood is difficult for most young people. It is a time when young people make important decisions about their lives including their future education, career and living arrangements. Most young people have strong family and social networks to support them in these decisions. However, young people leaving residential care are often expected to make this transition abruptly and at a young age with no family or social networks to support them. The leaving and aftercare supports provided by the State are often not sufficient to provide for the needs of these young people leaving them at risk …

The Teaching Of Happiness In Mainland China: In Light Of Aristotle And Marx, Zhaojun Xu Nov 2012

The Teaching Of Happiness In Mainland China: In Light Of Aristotle And Marx, Zhaojun Xu

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

In this dissertation, the teaching of happiness through morality courses in Mainland China is explored. The exploration centers on three questions: 1) What should be taught to students in terms of happiness? 2) Should schools focus on the cultivation of voluntary virtue or habituation of virtuous actions? And 3) what is the relation between happiness and achievement and/or sacrifice of self-interest? Based on both Aristotle’s and Marx’s views on these questions, the author argues that a comprehensive rather than a “correct” understanding of happiness should be taught to the students. Also, the author suggests that the goal of habituating students …

Adam Smith And The Modern Science, James Konow Nov 2012

Adam Smith And The Modern Science, James Konow

Economics Faculty Works

Third-party decision-makers, or spectators, have emerged as a useful empirical tool in modern social science research on moral motivation. Spectators of a sort also serve a central role in Adam Smith's moral theory. This paper compares these two types of spectatorship with respect to their goals, methodologies, visions of human nature and emphasis on moral rules. I find important similarities and differences and conclude that this comparison suggests significant opportunities for philosophical ethics to inform empirical and theoretical research on moral preferences and vice versa.

Priesthood Satisfaction And The Challenges Priests Face: A Case Study Of A Rural Diocese In The Philippines, Jayeel Cornelio Nov 2012

Priesthood Satisfaction And The Challenges Priests Face: A Case Study Of A Rural Diocese In The Philippines, Jayeel Cornelio

Development Studies Faculty Publications

This article draws from the experience of Catholic priests based in a rural diocese in the Philippines. It will be argued that their satisfaction as diocesan priests is best understood as a religious emotion in spite of the challenges they face on a daily basis. Their challenges revolve around economic limitation, problems with their bishop and leaders, and relational isolation brought about by social and geographic distance. In spite of these challenges, priest-respondents have asserted that they are satisfied because they are still able to fulfill their vocation as priests and have an impact on the lives of their parishioners. …

Social Control In Precolonial Igboland Of Nigeria, Emmanuel C. Onyeozili, Obi N. I. Ebbe Nov 2012

Social Control In Precolonial Igboland Of Nigeria, Emmanuel C. Onyeozili, Obi N. I. Ebbe

African Journal of Criminology and Justice Studies

This study is a descriptive investigation of the traditional system of social control and order maintenance in the Igbo nation of Nigeria in Africa. It discusses how the Igbo employed customary standards of conduct and negative sanctions for breach of norms to control its people prior to the advent of the Europeans, colonization, and prisons. Employing ethnographic methodology, the paper describes what constitutes serious deviance and the stringent penalties imposed for their contravention in pre-colonial Igboland. Specifically, the Igbo employed the services of council of elders, age-grade associations, title-making associations, oracles, “Dibia” fraternities (medicine men), secret societies, the myth of …

The State Of Private Security Companies In Trinidad And Tobago: Towards The Development Of A Governance System, David Anyanwu Nov 2012

The State Of Private Security Companies In Trinidad And Tobago: Towards The Development Of A Governance System, David Anyanwu

African Journal of Criminology and Justice Studies

Increasingly throughout the Caribbean, more commercial and non-militarized kinds of private security comprise security governance today. The escalating spate of serious crimes – mostly at the urban level, coupled with the inability of traditional law enforcement to contain heightened criminality has worsened the growing feeling of insecurity felt by CARICOM citizens. Recent statistics suggest that the number of companies providing security services has grown considerably, and this dramatic growth of the private security industry definitely deserves further attention. While at the international stage, initiatives have and continue to advocate for stricter controls of these companies and their operations, the state …

A Justice Void Filled: Explaining The Endurance Of Extreme Tradition-Based Laws In Nigeria, Nonso Okafo Nov 2012

A Justice Void Filled: Explaining The Endurance Of Extreme Tradition-Based Laws In Nigeria, Nonso Okafo

African Journal of Criminology and Justice Studies

As should be expected, where the citizens of a society are unable to receive justice in the dominant legal system, they will seek out other avenues and processes to achieve justice. And, for many citizens, the extremity of an alternative justice process is unlikely to dissuade their quest for fairness if the citizens regard the alternative as a viable means for justice. The following problem statement guides this paper: In view of the official guarantees and enormous powers of the English-style law and justice in Nigeria vis-à-vis Nigeria’s indigenous systems and processes as well as the potential for abuses of …

An Evaluation Of The Challenges Of Forensic Investigation And Unsolved Murders In Nigeria, Ngboawaji Daniel Nte Nov 2012

An Evaluation Of The Challenges Of Forensic Investigation And Unsolved Murders In Nigeria, Ngboawaji Daniel Nte

African Journal of Criminology and Justice Studies

The work attempts to evaluate the challenges facing forensic investigation capacity of the police and other internal security agencies in Nigeria in the face of high prevalence of unsolved murders in Nigeria in the past three decades. In carrying out this research both primary and secondary data were employed to add to the scientific fervour of the work. Consequently, the work discovered that poor/lack of forensic skills and equipment negatively impacts on the forensic investigation capacity of the police and other security agents. These impediments tend to further complicate the mystery of unsolved murders in a nation where even high …

Trafficking In Nigerian Cultural Antiquities: A Criminological Perspective, Usman Adekunle Ojedokun Nov 2012

Trafficking In Nigerian Cultural Antiquities: A Criminological Perspective, Usman Adekunle Ojedokun

African Journal of Criminology and Justice Studies

Antiquity trafficking has over time remained at the margin of criminological discourse in Nigeria. This silence from the criminological lens is, however, not an indication that the country is immune from the criminal activities of antiquity traffickers, but rather, it is a reflection of the common belief that this form of criminality is less rampant in Nigeria. This paper therefore examines the nature, causes, consequences and the control of the problem of illicit trafficking in the Nigerian cultural antiquities. Author adopts Cohen and Felson’s (1979) routine activity theory of crime to explain indices that formed the interplay of antiquity trafficking …

Mission: Impossible, Mission: Accomplished Or Mission: Underway — A Survey And Analysis Of Current Trends In Professionalism Education In American Law Schools, Alison Donahue Kehner, Mary Ann Robinson

University of Dayton Law Review

Special issue: Articles on legal research and writing

Authors' note: The Mission: Impossible reference in the title comes from a television show (CBS 1966-1973; ABC 1988-1990) and a series of major motion pictures (Paramount 1996, 2000, 2006, 2011) bearing the same name. The plot involved a team of highly trained agents called the Impossible Mission Force, or the "IMF," who fought and defeated evil wrongdoers each week using a variety of tools, "psychological manipulation" and "elaborate ruses." The parallels between the IMF and those of us committed to professionalism instruction were too ironic to ignore.
