Sea Program Process Evaluation: Improving Existing Evaluation Methods, Rachel Faust
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
The purpose of this project was to provide a process evaluation to more closely define how the program is currently being monitored, areas of quality assurance, and to create tools to aid in long term data analysis and collection of program outcomes. Staff and stakeholders of the program identified needs related to the program’s evolution which has since created transition and instability in how outcomes are tracked.
Due to increasing demands of current and potential funders to provide concrete objectives and outcome measurements, as well as to provide consistency in tracking between multiple schools that participate in the program, the …

Sovereignty In Theory And Practice, Winston P. Nagan, Aitza M. Haddad
Sovereignty In Theory And Practice, Winston P. Nagan, Aitza M. Haddad
UF Law Faculty Publications
Our study moves into the sovereignty idea in the context of international law with reference to the work of Grotius, the Dutch international lawyer of the early 17th century. Grotius took the sovereignty discourse to another level by considering the problem of sovereignty in an environment of multiple sovereigns. This was an environment, which required law and legal skills and therefore provided a framework within which reasoned legal elaboration would provide a mechanism to coordinate sovereign relations and thereby provide international restraints on sovereign absolutism. The Article then considers a significant 17th century juridical event in the practice of international …

Twelve-Step Program Familiarity And The Referral Process, Cory Brad Dennis
Twelve-Step Program Familiarity And The Referral Process, Cory Brad Dennis
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This dissertation considered Twelve-Step Program (TSP) referrals as an important area for addressing the less than desirable levels of client participation in TSPs despite the incorporation of them into a majority of substance abuse treatment programs. Clinicians are in a prime position to mentor clients through the socialization process, towards affiliation with the program. TSP familiarity was modeled as foundational to effective mentorship that aims to incorporate of best referral practices. The primary research question guiding this study was: What role does a clinician's level of 12-Step program familiarity have when referring clients to TSPs?

How Does The Nonprofit Workforce Perceive College Student Service Learners In Their Workplace?, Elisa M. Martin
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This qualitative case study explores the perceptions that employees from one nonprofit workplace have of college students completing community service as part of an undergraduate class with the Community and Public Service Program (CPSP). Social cognitive theory was used to frame the research questions. Factors of work stress, public service motivation, and volunteer/service learner management practices were considered. In-person interviews and a focus group were conducted with fifteen employees. In addition, four personnel from the CPSP and two students taking a class with CPSP and performing service at the case study site were also interviewed. Findings show that employees appear …

Five Women In Science, Technology, Engineering, And Mathematics Majors : A Portraiture Of Their Lived Experiences, Patrice Prusko Torcivia
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Numerous studies have addressed science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and their relation to education and gender ranging from elementary school pedagogy to career choices for traditional-aged college students. Little research has addressed nontraditional female students returning to the university to in the STEM fields. This study used the portraiture methodology and the idea of being an educational connoisseur (Eisner, 1998; Lawrence-Lightfoot & Davis, 1997) to explore the lived experiences of five nontraditional female students returning to the university to study a STEM major. The study is situated in an interpretivist paradigm, using interviews, journal writing, art work, and observations …
The Relationship Of Role Conflict To Supervisee Nondisclosure : Is It Mediated By The Supervisory Working Alliance?, Michael Siembor
The Relationship Of Role Conflict To Supervisee Nondisclosure : Is It Mediated By The Supervisory Working Alliance?, Michael Siembor
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The present study sought to replicate and extend the work done by Ladany, Hill, Corbett, and Nutt (1996) and Mehr, Ladany, and Caskie (2010) by examining supervisees' nondisclosure of relevant clinical material to their supervisors. The hypothesis was that the supervisory working alliance would at least partially mediate the relationship between role conflict and supervisee nondisclosure such that role conflict would be inversely related to the supervisory working alliance, as predicted by Ladany and Friedlander (1995). In turn, it was predicted that the supervisory working alliance would be inversely related to nondisclosure, as predicted by Ladany et al. and Mehr …
Relationships Between Admission Variables And Outcome Variables In A Special Education Graduate Program, Matthew J. Lafave
Relationships Between Admission Variables And Outcome Variables In A Special Education Graduate Program, Matthew J. Lafave
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The need for well-prepared special education teachers has made it important to examine how to best select candidates for special education teacher education programs, or at least to determine which, if any, admission variables relate to program outcome measures. This study used archival data from 148 students to investigate the relationships among multiple pre-admission variables from both applications and on-site admission tasks (including undergraduate GPA, reference ratings, interview ratings, writing sample and math assessment scores and a role play teaching situation rating) and outcome variables. These outcome variables were related to student performance from practica and portfolio ratings, using the …
How Psychotherapy Trainees Experience Theoretical Orientation Development : A Phenomenological Study, Mark Mason
How Psychotherapy Trainees Experience Theoretical Orientation Development : A Phenomenological Study, Mark Mason
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Knowledge and application of theory are integral to the practice of psychotherapy. Despite the focus on theory in clinical training, little is known about how psychotherapy trainees experience, learn about, and develop a theoretical orientation. This phenomenological study used grounded theory methods to examine 15 counseling and clinical psychology doctoral students' experiences developing a theoretical orientation. The specific purpose of the study was to understand in depth these trainees' perspectives on and attributions about learning and developing expertise with a specific theoretical orientation.

Gender And Empowerment In Supported Housing : A Consumer-Oriented Empowerment Model For Adults With Psychiatric Disabilities And Histories Of Homelessness, Eleanor M. Jaffee
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Using data from an evaluation of a supported housing program for adults with psychiatric disabilities and histories of homelessness (n = 59), the relationships of gender and the presence of children with subjective measures of mental health, personal mastery, personal empowerment, social support, and quality of life were explored, and the results informed the development of a revised consumer-oriented empowerment model. Key findings include a significant relationship between gender and personal mastery and empowerment with women scoring significantly lower than men on measures of this construct, and the role of personal mastery and empowerment as a mediator between psychiatric symptoms …

Co-Teaching Relationships Among Librarians And Other Information Professionals, Ann Medaill, Amy W. Shannon
Collaborative Librarianship
This article uses the co-teaching experiences of workshop instructors at the University of Nevada, Reno Libraries as a basis for an in-depth exploration of the factors that lead to successful co-teaching arrangements among librarians and other information professionals. The experiences of these instructors demonstrate that co-teaching can provide numerous benefits: It can enhance the learning experience for students, it can provide a method for refining teaching skills, it can promote successful collaborations across departments, and it can bring innovative ideas into the classroom. Drawing on collaboration research from the Wilder Foundation, this study found that successful co-teaching relationships are characterized …
Death By Religion? Individual Differences In Attitudes About Capital Punishment, Heather Johnston
Death By Religion? Individual Differences In Attitudes About Capital Punishment, Heather Johnston
UNF Undergraduate Capstone Projects and Honors Theses
There is evidence that a relationship between religiosity (intrinsic, extrinsic, indiscriminately pro-religious or indiscriminately anti-religious orientation toward one’s religious beliefs) and differences in attitudes about life and death social issues exists. Mainstream religions (e.g., Catholic and Protestant) have officially stated opposition to capital punishment while most individuals who are part of these mainstream religions favor capital punishment. In this study, 150 college students completed two different measures of religiosity and one measure of attitudes about capital punishment. Participant’s scores on two measures of religiosity were predictive of attitudes toward capital punishment. Intrinsically oriented individuals indicated more than extrinsically oriented individuals …
Punitive Juvenile Justice And Public Trials By Jury: Sixth Amendment Applications In A Post-Mckeiver World, Martin R. Gardner
Punitive Juvenile Justice And Public Trials By Jury: Sixth Amendment Applications In A Post-Mckeiver World, Martin R. Gardner
Nebraska Law Review
This Article argues that the continued homage to McKeiver in an era of punitive juvenile justice is the misguided result of judicial inattention to the distinction between punitive and rehabilitative dispositions. In Part II, I clarify this distinction and demonstrate why understanding it is essential to a sound analysis of whether jury determinations and public proceedings are constitutionally required in delinquency adjudications. I show that the concepts of rehabilitation and punishment are distinct and, for purposes of constitutional analysis, mutually exclusive. From this discussion I derive a conceptual framework, which I apply in Part IV to analyze several cases. These …

To investigate the differences in nostril dominance in affective disordered patients in comparison with healthy subjects. Materials and methods: A total of 26 male and 18 female bipolar I disordered inpatients, 11 male and 15 female unipolar depressed inpatients, and 30 male and 34 female healthy control subjects were evaluated. Nostril dominance was assessed by measuring nostril airflow. Nostril airflow was measured 24 times, at 30-min intervals from 08.00 hours to 20.00 hours. Results: Unipolar depressed patients had significantly more left nostril dominance; bipolar I disordered patients had significantly more right nostril dominance. Both right nostril dominance in bipolar patients …

Disaster Mental Health, Denise Bulling, Tarik Abdel-Monem
Disaster Mental Health, Denise Bulling, Tarik Abdel-Monem
University of Nebraska Public Policy Center: Publications
People have always given aid and comfort to each other during times of disaster. However, attempts to structure and professionalize this assistance are fairly recent developments. Disaster mental health, as an evolving field of practice and study, is a collection of interventions and practices that are designed to address incident-specific stress reactions, rather than ongoing or developmental mental health needs. Traditional mental health practice is based on a medical model, with a clinician seeing a patient in an office setting. Disaster mental health introduces a paradigm shift, requiring that practitioners (clinicians and indigenous helpers) work with individuals and whole communities …

Now & Then: The Appalachian Magazine, Volume 27, Issue 02, published in 2012. The theme of this issue is Serving Appalachia. This issue highlights the many ways individuals and organizations dedicate themselves to meeting the needs of Appalachian communities through compassion, advocacy, education, and faith. Articles profile efforts ranging from housing assistance, disaster relief, and programs for women and at risk youth to grassroots healthcare, community agriculture, the arts, and initiatives supporting people with disabilities. Personal stories of teachers, nurses, volunteers, activists, and everyday citizens underscore service as both a moral calling and a practical response to hardship, while …

The Art Of Going Beyond In Hossana, Ethiopia, Megan Elizabeth Flowers
The Art Of Going Beyond In Hossana, Ethiopia, Megan Elizabeth Flowers
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this study, I examine what education as development means for the men and women who live in Hossana town, Ethiopia. The ethnographic focus of this study is on understanding how education as development evokes different meanings for socio-political participation by rural students at a teacher training college and townspeople respectively. I discuss these conceptual differentiations in relation to the changes in beliefs and strategies that have occurred in Hossana and greater Ethiopia elsewhere over the course of several decades of local and global changes in the social order. I use the emic category of yilhunnta, as the social recognition …
