Gender Matters In Batterer Intervention Program Settings: Curriculum Topics Are Most Helpful In Fostering Positive Change In Domestic Violence Behavior, Courtney Cameron

Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs

Abstract Domestic violence is truly a complex issue in terms of defining it — no single definition can be found, in terms of understanding its causality ,some view it as a gender issue, others perceived it a socio-political issue, many consider it a criminal issue, and others treat it a psycho-social issue, in terms of its impact , its magnitude, effect and impact are far reaching and may last for a life time, in terms of its dynamics, its victims and perpetrators come from all demographic groups, and in terms of the effective intervention, they tend to focus on victimization …

Chicago's Public Housing Transformation: What Happened To The Residents?, Mark L. Joseph Feb 2012

Chicago's Public Housing Transformation: What Happened To The Residents?, Mark L. Joseph

Faculty Scholarship

Twelve years after the start of the Chicago Housing Authority’s Plan for Transformation (the Transformation), more than 16,000 families have been relocated into a variety of housing contexts including new mixed-income developments, private rental housing subsidized with vouchers, scattered-site public housing units, and rehabilitated traditional public housing developments. Tese households have been relocated with the stated goals of reducing concentrated poverty, revitalizing neighborhoods, and improving well-being, but questions remain about what has happened to the residents. Where did families end up? Are diferent types of households moving to diferent housing contexts? Does family well-being difer based on housing type? In …

Discerning Reported Suicide Attempts Within A Youthful Offender Population, Christopher Mallett, Lea A. Derigne, Linda Quinn, Paricia Stoddard Dare Feb 2012

Discerning Reported Suicide Attempts Within A Youthful Offender Population, Christopher Mallett, Lea A. Derigne, Linda Quinn, Paricia Stoddard Dare

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

With suicide being the third leading cause of death among young people, early identification of risk is critical, particularly for those involved with the juvenile courts. In this study of court-involved youth (N = 433) in two Midwest counties, logistic regression analysis identified some expected and unexpected findings of important demographic, educational, mental health, child welfare, and juvenile court-related variables that were linked to reported suicide attempts. Some of the expected suicide attempt risk factors for these youth included prior psychiatric hospitalization and related mental health services, residential placement, and diagnoses of depression and alcohol dependence. However, the most unexpected …

Testing For Breaks In Cointegrated Panels, Chihwa Kao, Lorenzo Trapani, Giovanni Urga Feb 2012

Testing For Breaks In Cointegrated Panels, Chihwa Kao, Lorenzo Trapani, Giovanni Urga

Center for Policy Research

We investigate the issue of testing for structural breaks in large cointegrated panels with common and idiosyncratic regressors. We prove a panel Functional Central Limit Theorem. We show that the estimated coefficients of the common regressors have a mixed normal distribution, whilst the estimated coefficients of the idiosyncratic regressors have a normal distribution. We consider strong dependence across the idiosyncratic regressors by allowing for the presence of (stationary and nonstationary) common factors. We show that tests based on transformations of Wald-type statistics have power versus alternatives of order

Home Forward’S Aging In Place Initiative: Planning For Current And Future Residents, Paula C. Carder, Jenny Weinstein, Jacklyn Nicole Kohon

Institute on Aging Publications

This report was prepared on behalf of the Aging in Place Initiative of Home Forward. The Initiative sought to gather information about older persons currently residing in Home Forward’s public housing properties, from persons age 55 and older on the waitlist for housing, and from older adults in the Portland area. While local data were unavailable at the time of this report, we know that nationally, more than one-third (37 percent) of the approximately 5 million households receiving housing assistance from HUD are headed by persons age 62 and older. With this in mind, Home Forward must make decisions now …

Participatory Action Research: A Useful Tool For Exploring Work-Life Balance Issues, Aileen M. Fortune, Jennifer Brown, Deb Burwell, Eileen Conlon

Journal of Extension

Many of our Extension clients struggle with issues of work-life balance, self-care, and sustainable leadership. Extension staff do as well. This article describes the richness of the Participatory Action Research (PAR) tool as an educational and community development intervention and a qualitative research methodology. The project on self-care and women's sustainable leadership described here also engaged researchers as participants in the study. Using PAR to create solutions to issues of self-care and work-life balance has great potential in Extension with benefits to clients and staff as well.

Acquisition And Use Of Locally Published Law Textbooks As Correlates Of Textbook Publishing In Nigeria, M. B. Edem, A. O. Okwilagwe Feb 2012

Acquisition And Use Of Locally Published Law Textbooks As Correlates Of Textbook Publishing In Nigeria, M. B. Edem, A. O. Okwilagwe

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Basic textbooks that attempt to discuss and analyse subjects with particular reference to Nigerian circumstances and relevant judicial opinions are adjudged to be very useful for law teaching and learning in Nigeria (Jegede, 1981). In recent times, serious concern is being expressed about the acute shortage of essential law textbooks in University libraries and the adverse effects that the problem may be having on legal education and the practice of the profession. With the present gross under-funding of most universities, most law faculties do not seem capable of meeting the approved minimum standards with respect to physical and library facilities. …

Work Values In Western And Eastern Europe, Benno Torgler Jan 2012

Work Values In Western And Eastern Europe, Benno Torgler

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

The paper reports on work values in Europe. At the country level we find that job satisfaction is related to lower working hours, higher well-being, and a higher GDP per capita. Moving to the micro level, we turn our attention from job satisfaction to analyse empirically work centrality and work value dimensions (without exploring empirically job satisfaction) related to intrinsic and extrinsic values, power and social elements. The results indicate substantial differences between Eastern and Western Europe. Socio-demographic factors, education, income, religiosity and religious denomination are significant influences. We find additional differences between Eastern and Western Europe regarding work-leisure and …

The Talented Tenth Revisited: Socialization And Retention For Black Junior Faculty At Hbcus, Stanley Kayron Ellis Jan 2012

The Talented Tenth Revisited: Socialization And Retention For Black Junior Faculty At Hbcus, Stanley Kayron Ellis

Theses and Dissertations

This study explored the socialization and retention of Black junior faculty at Historically Black College and University institutions. Tierney and Rhoads (1993) two-stage theory of faculty socialization was used as the theoretical framework for the study. To understand the socialization experiences of Black junior faculty who were in their first faculty appointments since achieving their Ph.D.s, a phenomenological approach was employed during the investigation. Semi-structured, face-to-face interviews were conducted with nine Black junior faculty at both private and public HBCUs to gain insight into their socialization as they experienced it at these institutions. The findings of this study revealed three …

Longitudinal Impact Of The Project Paths On Adolescent Risk Behavior: What Happened After Five Years?, Daniel T. L. Shek, Lu Yu

Pediatrics Faculty Publications

The present study investigated the longitudinal impact of the Project PATHS, a large-scale curriculum-based positive youth development program in Hong Kong, on the development of adolescents' risk behavior over a period of five years. Using a longitudinal randomized controlled design, eight waves of data were collected from 19 experimental schools in which students participated in the Project PATHS (N = 2,850 at Wave 8) and 24 control schools without joining the Project PATHS (N = 3,640 at Wave 8). At each wave, students responded to measures assessing their current risk behaviors, including delinquency, use of different types of drug, and …

American Culture’S Shifting Perspective On Female Homosexuality From The 1970’S To The Present, Courtney Williams Jan 2012

American Culture’S Shifting Perspective On Female Homosexuality From The 1970’S To The Present, Courtney Williams

McNair Scholars Research Journal

Homosexuality has been a subject of controversy since before it was removed from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) in 1973 as a mental disease. Female homosexuality holds special significance because women have generally been victims of sexism, both subtle and blatant, which has led to harmful effects, whether through individual or interpersonal discrimination (Angela R. Gillem et al, 2000). These issues began to be recognized when the second wave of feminism came into play, also known as the Women’s Movement (Biaggio, 2000). There have been few investigative studies focusing on attitudes toward homosexual individuals, and fewer that look into …
