Librarians And Statistics: Thoughts On A Tentative Relationship, Amy S. Van Epps
Librarians And Statistics: Thoughts On A Tentative Relationship, Amy S. Van Epps
Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research
Librarians are not trained as original researchers during library school. As a result, librarians as authors may succumb to common statistical misconceptions and use errors, thus it is important for librarians to know how to recognize them. A quick discussion of what a researcher should be aware to avoid poor methods and inaccurate use of statistics is included. A review of statistics and research methods courses currently offered in library and information science programs helps determine if the lack of training observed in earlier studies has changed. A list of recommendations for authors and reviewers of LIS literature is presented.

Interpreter Preparedness For Specialized Settings, Jamie Walker, Sherry Shaw
Interpreter Preparedness For Specialized Settings, Jamie Walker, Sherry Shaw
Journal of Interpretation
Sign language interpreters who begin work soon after graduating from post-secondary programs, either associate-level training programs or bachelor-level interpreter education programs are vulnerable to unique challenges for which they may be inadequately prepared, especially if they work as community interpreters in specialized settings. This descriptive study represents the initial attempt to understand how graduates determine personal readiness and identifies contributors to preparedness for working in specialized settings. The sample of recent program graduates provided a snapshot of how prepared interpreters felt in their first years following graduation regarding competency in Legal, Healthcare, Mental Health, Educational, and Deaf-Blind situations. This study …
Peer Support And Consultation Project For Interpreters: A Model For Supporting The Well-Being Of Interpreters Who Practice In Mental Health Settings, Arlyn Anderson
Journal of Interpretation
The interpreter who works alongside mental health professionals may have equal vulnerability to occupational stress but lack adequate training in order to recognize it or take necessary steps to offset negative impacts. This paper presents a model of intervention known as Peer Support and Consultation Project for Interpreters (PSCPI) working in mental health settings. It describes a study that was designed to determine whether or not PSCPI meetings would influence participants’ immediate sense of satisfaction with several qualities thought to be consistent with developing resilience to work- related stress reactions. The findings of this study indicate a strong positive relationship …

Family Affairs newsletter (2004-2016)
FAMILY AFFAIRS was a free, twice-a-month, social activities newsletter for the GLBTQI (gay/lesbian/bisexual/trans/queer/intersex) community, sent out around the 1st and 15th of each month. It covered the State of Maine only. The list was begun and maintained for many years by Jean Vermette in Bangor, and later operated by Zack Paakkonen of Portland. Over the years it evolved from a social activities newsletter into a business directory, classified ad service, and community bulletin board.

Justin's Story is part of Pediatric End-of-Life Case Studies, one of seven teaching modules drawn from the Emmy Award-winning documentary, A Lion in the House. A Lion in the House portrays an unprecedented, intimate look at the realities of childhood cancer through the journeys of five families and their professional caregivers over the course of 6 years. Justin's Story provides a forum for open-ended discussion and consideration of compassionate approaches for navigating pediatric end-of-life. It offers content that is unpredictable and not always best practice. Learners reflect on the complex impact of childhood cancer on Justin, his family, and …
