A Brief Problem-Solving Intervention For Caregivers Of Children With Cancer, Jennifer Lamanna
A Brief Problem-Solving Intervention For Caregivers Of Children With Cancer, Jennifer Lamanna
Theses and Dissertations
OBJECTIVE: Pediatric cancer treatment is stressful for caregivers. Research has indicated that problem-solving coping reduces stress related to caregiving. The current study examines the effects of a problem-solving intervention (Parent Empowerment Program), based on Problem-Solving Therapy, for caregivers of children on active cancer treatment. It was hypothesized that participants who received the intervention would show decreases in caregiving stress and posttraumatic stress symptoms, and increases in problem-solving ability between baseline and post-test assessments compared to those who received an attention control. METHOD: Thirty-nine caregivers (all parents; 48% participation rate) participated. The majority were mothers (90%), married or partnered (59%) and …

Service-Learning Projects Are A Great Fit For Marketing Courses, William T. Neese
Service-Learning Projects Are A Great Fit For Marketing Courses, William T. Neese
Academic Summit
A wide variety of marketing courses are particularly well suited for service-learning projects. Many of the topics commonly discussed in marketing classes (e.g., marketing research) relate to needs in the business and nonprofit communities. Small firms and nonprofit organizations may not have the skills and resources necessary to gather and analyze information about target markets or conduct marketing audits. The presenter first offers a framework for conducting service-learning projects in any class, then describes several service-learning projects previously used in his own marketing classes. The concluding example will overview one currently being implemented in the senior capstone Marketing Strategy course.

Personal Construction Of Cough Medicine Among Young Substance Abusers In Hong Kong, Daniel T. L. Shek
Personal Construction Of Cough Medicine Among Young Substance Abusers In Hong Kong, Daniel T. L. Shek
Pediatrics Faculty Publications
Although cough medicine abuse is a growing problem in many places, there is no study examining the views of young substance abusers toward cough medicine. The objective of this study was to examine personal constructions of cough medicine abusers via the repertory grid tests (N = 11). Several observations are highlighted from the study. First, personal constructions of cough medicine were mixed, including the benefits and harmful effects of its abuse. Second, although the informants perceived cough medicine to be addictive and harmful, they perceived cough medicine to be less addictive and less harmful than did heroin. Third, while the …

Evaluation Of The Project P.A.T.H.S. Based On Students' Weekly Diaries: Findings From Eight Datasets, Daniel T. L. Shek, Rachel C. F. Sun
Pediatrics Faculty Publications
This paper aims to investigate the effectiveness of the Tier 1 Program of the Project P.A.T.H.S. (positive adolescent training through holistic social programmes) based on eight datasets collected between 2005 and 2009. A total of 1,138 students who participated in the program were randomly invited (from the whole grade or in some classes) to write a piece of journal in the form of a weekly diary in order to reveal their perceptions and feelings regarding the program and the perceived benefits of the program. Based on an integration of findings from different databases, results showed that the respondents generally (1) …

Evaluation Of A Positive Youth Development Program Based On The Repertory Grid Test, Daniel T. L. Shek
Pediatrics Faculty Publications
The repertory grid test, based on personal construct psychology, was used to evaluate the effectiveness of Project P.A.T.H.S. (Positive Adolescent Training through Holistic Social Programmes) in Hong Kong. One hundred and four program participants (n = 104) were randomly invited to complete a repertory grid based on personal construct theory in order to provide both quantitative and qualitative data for measuring self-identity changes after joining the program. Findings generally showed that the participants perceived that they understood themselves better and had stronger resilience after joining the program. Participants also saw themselves as closer to their ideal selves and other positive …

Coping Styles Of Maltreated Children As Related To Risk And Temperament, Tiffani N. Orne
Coping Styles Of Maltreated Children As Related To Risk And Temperament, Tiffani N. Orne
Senior Honors Theses
A large number of children are classified as maltreated, and these children respond to maltreatment in different ways. Cumulative sociodemographic risk factors and temperament both affect the socioemotional outcomes, including internalizing and externalizing behavior problems. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the association between risk factors and behavioral outcomes in children who have been neglected or abused is influenced by temperamental characteristics. Social workers in Virginia completed questionnaires about five children and adolescents who are part of their current case load. Questionnaires included demographic questions, a Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL), and an Emotionality Activity Sociability (EAS) temperament …

Influence Of Early Intervention Career Exploration On Student Persistence, Ben Littlepage
Influence Of Early Intervention Career Exploration On Student Persistence, Ben Littlepage
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The study examined whether 181 academically underprepared, first-time freshmen were found to increase persistence and academic achievement due to the early intervention of a career exploration assessment. Persistence was defined as continuous, active enrollment from Fall 2010 to Fall 2011. Academic achievement was defined as grade point average. The study site was a rural community college located in northwest Tennessee where household poverty was high, educational attainment was low and 70 percent of first-time freshmen had a remedial education need in 2010. Pre-existing characteristics and the level of academic preparedness for each participant were collected. Participants were purposefully sampled by …

Southern Graces: Women, Faith, And The Quest For Social Justice, Memphis, Tennessee, 1950-1969, Doris Ann Youngblood Mulhearn
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Memphis,Tennessee was thrust into the national civil rights movement after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1968. The city, however, has a much more complex connection with civil rights activity than the traditional narratives imply. As early as 1950, both black and white Memphians attempted to address the social inequities of Jim Crow. Many of these early social justice activists were women. Although the assumption is that the women would be Protestant because of the historical association of African Americans with Protestant denominations as well as the lack of a significant Catholic population inTennessee, there was a …
