Challenges To Policy Implementation: An Examination Of An Integrated Health Care Delivery System Demonstration Project, Kaitlin A. Roh May 2012

Challenges To Policy Implementation: An Examination Of An Integrated Health Care Delivery System Demonstration Project, Kaitlin A. Roh

Political Science Honors Projects

US health care costs are among the highest of all industrialized nations. In an effort to reduce costs and improve health outcomes, new delivery models – including accountable care organizations – have been developed. Yet, as revealed through interviews with key participants in Hennepin County's delivery project, significant challenges to implementing them exist. They include obstacles that inherently arise from implementing a means-tested health care policy within a competitive, federalized governing structure. Because these challenges are not unique to Hennepin County, this project can help similar projects and may push policy towards the integration of the health care and social …

A Study Of Churches As A Source Of Support For Families With Children On The Autism Spectrum, Marsena Williams Webb May 2012

A Study Of Churches As A Source Of Support For Families With Children On The Autism Spectrum, Marsena Williams Webb

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to understand the unique role of organized religion as a support system to families who have children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Faith communities play a vital role in society and have a theological duty to alleviate the stress of families who have children with special needs and to support healthy adaptation. Delimiting the scope of this study to Christian churches in a mid-size metropolitan area in the South, this project used a case study to understand the level of support one family with a child on the autism spectrum experienced in the churches …

School Counselor And Principal Perceptions Regarding The Roles Of School Counselors, Tyra Terrell Bailey May 2012

School Counselor And Principal Perceptions Regarding The Roles Of School Counselors, Tyra Terrell Bailey

Dissertations

The roles of the school counselors have changed significantly over this century. Due to the pressures of high-stakes testing and budget cuts, counselors often are tasked with roles that are not aligned with state or national standards for school counseling programs (Brown, Galassi, & Akos, 2004; Gysbers & Henderson, 2001).

This study examined the differences in perceptions of the roles of school counselors by using descriptive statistics, ANOVA, MANOVA, multiple linear regression, and paired t-tests. The differences in perceptions of the roles of school counselors were found to be consistent with previous studies in some areas and inconsistent in other …

A Multidimensional Perspective Of Faculty Mentoring And Job Satisfaction During The First Year Of Teaching At Lindenwood University, Carla Mueller

Dissertations

Higher education requires exemplary faculty to provide a high quality education to college-level students. When faculty is new to an institution, issues of transition can affect job satisfaction negatively. The literature concludes that job satisfaction can affect retention of quality personnel. As a result, college and university administrators have addressed this concern with the development of mentoring programs for faculty new to their institutions. One of the goals of mentoring programs is based on the assumption that mentoring can affect job satisfaction in a positive way; thus, involvement in such programs will ensure faculty members are more likely to be …

Youth Worker Reasoning About Dilemmas Encountered In Practice: Expert-Novice Differences, Kathrin Walker, Reed Larson May 2012

Youth Worker Reasoning About Dilemmas Encountered In Practice: Expert-Novice Differences, Kathrin Walker, Reed Larson

Journal of Youth Development

This study examines one aspect of youth worker expertise, the ability to appraise and respond to the dilemmas of practice encountered in youth programs. To understand how expert youth workers differ from novices in their reasoning about these dilemmas, a sample of expert and novice practitioners read vignettes of dilemma situations and described their appraisals of the situations and how they might respond to them. Quantitative analyses confirmed four hypothesized differences between the two groups. Experts identified more considerations in the situations and generated more possible responses. Experts’ responses were also more likely to be youth-centered and address multiple considerations. …

The Impact Of Teacher Training Concerning Recognition Of Child Abuse And Neglect, Emily Timpe May 2012

The Impact Of Teacher Training Concerning Recognition Of Child Abuse And Neglect, Emily Timpe

Curriculum and Instruction Undergraduate Honors Theses

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (2010), child abuse and neglect continues to be a significant issue in our country. An estimated six million children were the subject of reports of child maltreatment in 2009. Walsh, Laskey, McInnes, Farrell, Mathews, and Briggs (2011) explained that many educators are not well-equipped to recognize the signs of abuse among their students. Conducting a study to discover the preparedness of current and pre-service teachers to recognize when a child is being abused should identify potential gaps in the education of teachers, not only in college/university programs, but also in …

Do Attitudes About Spoiling Children Affect Attitudes Regarding What Infants Need For Early Social-Emotional Development, Kathleen Westover

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Infants that are raised in a warm loving environment have an increased probability of growing into responsible loving adults. Infants have the ability to make their needs known through different cues such as crying. Many parents do not understand how to respond appropriately to their infant’s cues. For instance many parents believe that if you pick up an infant every time they cry they will become spoiled. Researchers have studied the effects of responding appropriately to an infant. Infants who have their needs met when they demonstrate signs of distress learn that the world is a safe place for exploration. …

Influences Of Disclosure Among Child Sexual Abuse Victims, Michelle Jones May 2012

Influences Of Disclosure Among Child Sexual Abuse Victims, Michelle Jones

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Child forensic interviews are essential in eliciting disclosures in child abuse cases. Due to the nature of abuse and the child victims, barriers are inevitable to obtaining a full disclosure. This research describes the barriers as well as the factors that increase the likelihood of eliciting a disclosure during child forensic interviews. Previous research has found that factors more likely to induce a disclosure are having a supportive primary caregiver, an investigation which was instigated by the child victim, and if the victim is an older female. Barriers preventing disclosure include threats made by the perpetrator, fear, lack of opportunity …

Transforming Selves For Inclusive Practice: Experiences Of Early Childhood Preservice Teachers, Joseph S. Agbenyega, Sunanta Klibthong

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

In this paper we discussed the impact of ‘spaces of difference’ on teachers’ professional learning to embrace and celebrate diversity, as perceived by early childhood preservice teachers who share their opinions through online group discussions. Spaces of difference is a first year undergraduate course unit designed to support preservice teachers’ professional education to embrace and implement inclusive practice in early childhood education. Informed by Critical theoretical ideas of Bourdieu (Capital, Field, Habitus), we investigated early childhood preservice teachers’ concept of spaces of difference and their personal transformations. Results of this qualitative study suggested that teachers’ understanding of space extended and …

The Diver's Distance, Aristide Zezouma Sanou May 2012

The Diver's Distance, Aristide Zezouma Sanou

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The visual assessment of clustering tendency (VAT) method, which was developed by J. C. Bezdek, R. J. Hathaway and J. M. Huband uses a reordering of the rows and columns of a dissimilarity matrix; it then displays the ordered dissimilarity matrix (ODM) as a 2D gray-level image called an ordered dissimilarity image (ODI). Al- though successful in determining potential clustering structure of various data sets, the technique offers room for improvement. In this thesis, we propose a new proximity measure called the diver's distance which is defined based on concepts in graph theory. We then theoretically study the diver's distance …

Cultivating An Opportunity: Access And Inclusion In Seattle's Community Gardens, Alice K. Opalka

Scripps Senior Theses

This thesis explores the social dynamics of community gardens and their participation within them in the contemporary food justice movement in Seattle, Washington. Community gardens are seen as solutions to myriad urban and environmental problems, such as food deserts, community empowerment, urban greening, environmental education and sustainability of the food system. Three case studies of Seattle organizations, the P-Patch Program, Lettuce Link and Alleycat Acres, provide a basis for analysis of the purported benefit of community empowerment as a function of organizational structure, history and policies. City government support, flexibility, and a critical outlook towards the processes of inclusion and …

Social And Contextual Factors That Influence Hiv Risk Behaviors Among Indigenous Msm In The Peruvian Amazon, Isaac E. Alva, E. Roberto Orellana

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

Men who have sex with men (MSM) face a significantly higher risk of HIV infection than the general population around the globe. In Peru, HIV prevalence among MSM range from 14% to 23%, with Lima, the capital, and port cities in the Amazonian region being the most affected. Recent studies found that indigenous MSM who leave their villages for cities along the Amazon River and its tributaries, engage in high risk behaviors such as high alcohol consumption and unprotected sex with mestizo (non- indigenous) MSM. This study examined social and contextual factors associated with risky behaviors among indigenous MSM in …

The Power Of Subtle Interpersonal Hostility In Psychodynamic Psychotherapy: A Speech Acts Analysis, Timothy Anderson, Lynne M. Knobloch-Fedders, William B. Stiles, Tatiana Ordonez, Bernadette D. Heckmna

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

This study compared participants' speech acts in low-hostile versus moderate-hostile interpersonal episodes in time-limited psychodynamic psychotherapy. Sixty-two cases from the Vanderbilt II psychotherapy project were categorized as low or moderate in interpersonal hostility based on ratings of interpersonal process using Structural Analysis of Social Behavior (Benjamin, 1996). Representative episodes were coded using a taxonomy of speech acts (Stiles, 1992), and speech acts were compared across low- and moderate-hostile episodes. Therapists in moderate-hostility episodes used more interpretations and edifications, and fewer questions and reflections. Patients in moderate-hostility episodes used more disclosures and fewer edifications. Content coding showed that therapist interpretations with …
