Human Rights Policy Paper: Rape As A Tactic Of War, Sarah Fitzgerald
Global Studies Student Scholarship
This paper reports on rape used as a tactic of war, outlining the scope of the problem and introducing policy options to address the issue on a global scale. Policy options targeted at relief services include increasing direct aid through funding fistula surgeries, building rural hospitals, and providing skills training for women awaiting surgery. Additional policy options addressing the problem at its root include legislative changes to stop impunity at the International Criminal Court, revising the Convention on Genocide to include sex and gender, utilization of devices such as the Rape aXe, and changing the culture of misogyny through educational …

From Linkage To Gwas: A Multifaceted Exploration Of The Genetic Risk For Alcohol Dependence, Amy Adkins
From Linkage To Gwas: A Multifaceted Exploration Of The Genetic Risk For Alcohol Dependence, Amy Adkins
Theses and Dissertations
Family, twin and adoption studies consistently suggest that genetic factors strongly influence the risk for alcohol dependence (AD). Although the literature supports the role of genetics in AD, identification of specific genes contributing to the etiology of AD has proven difficult. These difficulties are due in part to the complex set of risk factors contributing to the development of AD. These risk factors include comorbidities with other clinical diagnoses and behavioral phenotypes (e.g., major depression), physiological differences that contribute to the differences between people in their level of response to ethanol (e.g., initial sensitivity) and finally the large number of …

Coping Strategies Utilized By South Asian Survivors Of Intimate Partner Violence, Nicole Gaige, Shreya Bhandari
Coping Strategies Utilized By South Asian Survivors Of Intimate Partner Violence, Nicole Gaige, Shreya Bhandari
Explorations – The Journal of Undergraduate Research, Scholarship and Creativity at Wright State
This study is based upon exploring the coping strategies utilized by South Asian immigrant women who have experienced intimate partner violence. All participants are from South Asia, which includes the countries of India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal, Maldives and Sri Lanka.
In-depth telephone and face-to-face interviews are conducted with the participants from the Greater Cincinnati and Columbus area. Referrals for the current study are received from a South Asian organization catering to this specific ethnic population and a couple of mainstream women's organizations. So far seven in-depth interviews have been conducted. Due to the sensitive nature of the issue there are …

Recognition Of Compassion Fatigue Among Medical-Surgical Nurses: The Provision Of Education To Manage The Effects, Kandace Woodruff
Recognition Of Compassion Fatigue Among Medical-Surgical Nurses: The Provision Of Education To Manage The Effects, Kandace Woodruff
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
The Institute of Medicine (IOM) (2010) recommends that healthcare organizations make the “recruitment and retention of qualified nurses a priority”. The ability to comply with the recommendation is fraught with challenges. Nurses are required to care for patients across the age span with varying medical complexities. There are work related stressors which are inherent to the care of a more acutely ill patient population. The tenuousness produced by this type of environment can predispose the nurse to a stress induced phenomenon known as, Compassion Fatigue. The literature is abounding with information related to compassion fatigue among various nursing specialties. However, …

Who Participates In Ethnic Organizations: Immigrant Children In Los Angeles, Beatrice Uilani Tiptida Morlan
Who Participates In Ethnic Organizations: Immigrant Children In Los Angeles, Beatrice Uilani Tiptida Morlan
Theses and Dissertations
This exploratory descriptive study looks at the characteristics of immigrant children in the greater metropolitan Los Angeles area who participate in organizations associated with their parents' country of origin. By drawing on the 2004 Immigration and Intergenerational Mobility in Metropolitan Los Angeles (IIMMLA) survey dataset, I bring together aspects of the participation and assimilation literatures in order to better understand who participates in ethnic organizations. Results provide evidence that ethnic organization participants differ from the full sample and from respondents who participate in community organizations; they exhibit more ethnic resource characteristics. Significant determinants of participation in ethnic organizations include having …
Medication-Related Problems Experienced By Patients During Transitions To Assisted Living, Deanna Flora
Medication-Related Problems Experienced By Patients During Transitions To Assisted Living, Deanna Flora
Theses and Dissertations
Medication reconciliation is a systematic and comprehensive review of medication regimens during care transitions aiming to prevent adverse drug events. Poorly executed transitions negatively impact patient welfare and cause financial burden. Medication-related problems (MRPs) experienced during transitions to an assisted living facility (ALF) were evaluated. Data was collected from pharmacy records for transitions to an ALF over three months, including demographics, medications, potentially inappropriate medications, and MRPs. MRPs were categorized and summarized using descriptive statistics. Forty-five patients (71% female) experienced 59 transitions. Average age was 85.6 years. Median length of stay away from the ALF was three days. There were …

Towards Integration: An Autoethnography On The Development Of Identity, Kanchana Henrich
Creative Arts Therapies Theses
This thesis is an autoethnography that explores my own experience of identity development. The intention of this research was to try and find an answer as to why I have not yet been able to develop a cohesive sense of self, in which I am able to accept and embody all of my seemingly disparate parts. I have thus far in my life felt scattered, and unable to accept both the cultures into which I was born, as well as the cultures to which I am organically drawn. Through introspection, reflective writing, and interviewing family members, I have been able …

Considering Information Literacy Skills And Needs: Designing Library Instruction For The Online Learner, Swapna Kumar, Marilyn Ochoa, Mary Edwards
Communications in Information Literacy
This paper reports on a library instruction needs assessment conducted with incoming doctoral students (n=34) in two online programs in education. The differences in the prior skills and experiences of the two groups highlighted the importance of both needs assessments and learner analysis as well as course- or program-specific instructional design in information literacy instruction for online students. Based on students' reported skills, education librarians structured both the content and format of instruction to help students succeed in online activities in the doctoral program.
