Nathan Richardson And The Editions Of The New Method For The Pianoforte, Sarah Kaye Prigge
Nathan Richardson And The Editions Of The New Method For The Pianoforte, Sarah Kaye Prigge
Music
Those studying music during the mid-nineteenth century in the United States began to experience music education through many of the models of pedagogy that are still in use at the present time. The use of a method book for music study was a new concept. A few more serious piano students traveled to Europe to study with the major performing artists of the day. As the number of homes with pianos increased, so did piano method books for home use. Women of the gilded age were encouraged to pursue music, most often for the purpose of playing at home and …
Hepatitis Virus B And Hepatitis Virus C Co-Infection Among Hiv Patients And Development Of An Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (Elisa) For Diagnosis Of Equine Protozoa Myeloencephalitis, Annet Kyomuhangi
Microbiological Sciences
Study 1: HIV patients with chronic HBV and/or HCV are more likely to die of liver disease and have a more rapid progression to Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) than patients solely infected with HIV. Blood samples were assayed for the presence of HIV 1/2 antibodies, Hepatitis B Surface Antigen (HBsAg) and Hepatitis C antibodies (HCVab). The prevalence of HBV and HCV among HIV patients was 13% and 10%, respectively. This calls for integration of HBV and HCV prevention, and treatment into HIV programs. Study 2: The current techniques used to diagnose EPM have low sensitivities and some are expensive. To …
The Development Of Works For Choir And Brass: A Study Of Four Representative Works, Christina Marie Armendarez
The Development Of Works For Choir And Brass: A Study Of Four Representative Works, Christina Marie Armendarez
Music
As brass instruments evolved from crude instruments limited to only a few notes into instruments that could play melodic passages within the vocal range, they began to be paired with the voice. The development traced in this paper will focus primarily on the addition of brass instruments with a choral ensemble from the late Renaissance period through the Modern period. Insight into the historical use of brass and the evolution of choral and brass music allows us to better understand the genre and how subject matter, text, and/or the occasion for which the compositions were composed often influenced the composer’s …

Incorporating Adaptive Management And Translational Ecology Into The North Dakota Total Maximum Daily Load Program: A Case Study Of The Fordville Dam Nutrient Tmdl, Michael John Hargiss
Natural Resources Management
Translational ecology and adaptive management strategies were incorporated into the Fordville Dam Nutrient Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) case study to determine if these two techniques were compatible to the North Dakota TMDL Program. A case study summary of the Fordville Dam Nutrient TMDL was discussed to provide contrast and comparison of the current TMDL program strategy and systematic improvements that could be made with the incorporation of translational ecology and adaptive management. Translational ecology is an effective way to bridge the information barrier through open communication between the stakeholders and scientists while creating a mutual learning experience. Adaptive management …

Emerging Infectious Diseases With Limited Treatment Options: The Case Of Ebola Hemorrhagic Fever In Uganda And Shiga Toxin Producing Escheria Coli In The United States, Rahel Dubiwak Gemmeda
Microbiological Sciences
Emerging infectious diseases are diseases that newly emerge in a population or change the frequency or spatial distribution of their occurrence. Ebola Hemorrhagic Fever (EHF) and Shiga Toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) infections are among diseases that emerged in the 1970s. The two diseases have limited treatment options with no vaccines. This paper is based on two case studies. The first case study utilized data from the 2007/2008 EHF outbreak in Uganda and investigated the epidemiological and clinical aspects of the outbreak. The second case study was based on a study done on STEC isolates collected from beef cattle at the …

Using Lidar Derived Information For Predicting Beaver Dam Site Selection At Mingo National Wildlife Refuge, Sean Joseph Lofgren
Natural Resources Management
Characterizing features that influence beaver (Castor Canadensis) to select a site to construct a dam may have important implications for managing damage to select stands of bottomland hardwood forest by beaver activity. This study was initiated to determine and develop a quick and simple approach for managers to determine areas of most concern. Advanced Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) was collected for the study area in November of 2009. The study utilized software that has been developed to extract topographic features from a Digital Elevation Model (DEM). The extracted data was used to identify landscape variables to try and specify …
Estimation Of Increased Traffic On Highways In Montana And North Dakota Due To Oil Development And Production, Alan Gabriel Dybing
Estimation Of Increased Traffic On Highways In Montana And North Dakota Due To Oil Development And Production, Alan Gabriel Dybing
Transportation Logistics and Finance
Advances in oil extraction technology such as hydraulic fracturing have improved capabilities to extract and produce oil in the Bakken and Three Forks shale formations located in North Dakota, Montana, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan. From 2004 to the present, there has been a significant increase in oil rigs and new oil wells in these areas, resulting in increased impacts to the local, county, state, and federal roadway network. Traditional methods of rural traffic forecasting using an established growth rate are not sufficient under the changing traffic levels. The goal of this research is to develop a traffic model that will improve …
Organizing Transit In Small Urban And Rural Communities, David Ripplinger
Organizing Transit In Small Urban And Rural Communities, David Ripplinger
Transportation Logistics and Finance
The justification of government support of rural transit on the basis of the presence of increasing returns to scale and the most efficient regional organization of transit is investigated. Returns to density, size, and scope at most levels of output were found. Cost subadditivity, where a monopoly firm can provide service at a lower cost than two firms, was found for many, but not all observations. The presence of natural monopoly in rural transit in a strict sense is rejected. The findings and implications are directly applicable to rural transit in North Dakota and should be helpful in informing future …

Preventing Mass Atrocity Crimes: The Responsibility To Protect And The Syria Crisis, Paul Williams, J. Trevor Ulbrick, Jonathan Worboys
Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals
The Responsibility to Protect (R2P) is a complicated and "emerging norm"' of international law that seeks to provide a means for the international community to prevent mass atrocity crimes occurring within the boundaries of a sovereign state.' Since its emergence in 2001, in the wake of humanitarian tragedies in Bosnia, Rwanda, Kosovo, and Darfur, R2P has been hailed as a way of resolving what one commentator called the "problem from hell."3 Under R2P, however, the use of force is reserved for actions within the UN Charter's Chapter VII framework. As the Syria crisis has demonstrated, this position continues to hinder …
Military Intervention And Diplomatic Engagement In Libya: A Collage Of Policy, Force And Law, Paul Williams, Anna Triponel
Military Intervention And Diplomatic Engagement In Libya: A Collage Of Policy, Force And Law, Paul Williams, Anna Triponel
Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals
The case of Libya demonstrates the extent to which the law plays a role in enabling, shaping and constraining complex military and diplomatic operations. The law underpinned a number of decisions made at the policy level regarding military and diplomatic engagement. Although prior military operations can provide guidance for decision-making in future military operations, the application of the law to each case will be unique. The Libyan case study provides an example of how the law and politics intertwined to achieve the U.S. government’s objectives of protecting the Libyan people against violent attacks by their leader. This chapter examines the …

Standards, Patents, And The National Smart Grid, Jorge Contreras
Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is charged with overseeing the identification and selection of hundreds of standards that will be required to implement the national Smart Grid project. However, the benefits that could be realized from Smart Grid standardization could be threatened by a growing number of patents that cover Smart Grid architecture and technologies. If such patents are not revealed until technology is broadly distributed throughout the network (“locked-in”), significant disruption could occur when patent holders seek to collect unanticipated rents from large segments of the market. Moreover, even if patents are revealed early in the …

Psychology Faculty Research and Scholarship
Research linking childhood physical abuse (CPA) and adult intimate partner aggression (IPA) has focused on individuals without sufficient attention to couple processes. In this study, 109 couples reported on histories of CPA, IPA, and anger expression. Actor-Partner Interdependence Modeling was used to examine links between CPA and revictimization and perpetration of IPA, with anger suppression as a potential mediator. Women’s CPA histories were associated with more physical aggression towards and more revictimization by partners. Men’s CPA histories were only associated at the trend level with their revictimization. Anger suppression fully mediated the link between women’s CPA and both revictimization and …
Directive Versus Supportive Approaches Used By Midwives When Providing Care During The Second Stage Of Labor, Kathryn Osborne
Directive Versus Supportive Approaches Used By Midwives When Providing Care During The Second Stage Of Labor, Kathryn Osborne
College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications
Introduction: Although the risks associated with using sustained and forceful maternal bearing‐down efforts during the second stage of labor have been well documented, most women who give birth in the United States bear down in response to direction from care providers about when and how to push rather than in response to their own physiologic urges. The purpose of this study was to describe the practices used by certified nurse‐midwives/certified midwives (CNMs/CMs) in response to maternal bearing‐down efforts when caring for women in second‐stage labor and to identify factors associated with the use of supportive approaches to second‐stage labor care. …

Family presence during resuscitation (FPDR) is an option occurring in clinical practice. National clinical guidelines on providing the option of FPDR are available from the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses, American Heart Association, Emergency Nurses Association, and Society of Critical Care Medicine. The FPDR option currently remains controversial, underutilized, and not the usual practice with trauma patients. This article is based on the methodological and practical research challenges associated with an ongoing study to examine the effects of the FPDR option on family outcomes in patients experiencing critical injury after motor vehicle crashes and gunshot wounds. The primary aim of …
