Occurrence, Transmission, And Zoonotic Potential Of Chronic Wasting Disease, Samuel E. Saunders, Shannon L. Bartelt-Hunt, Jason C. Bartz Jan 2012

Occurrence, Transmission, And Zoonotic Potential Of Chronic Wasting Disease, Samuel E. Saunders, Shannon L. Bartelt-Hunt, Jason C. Bartz

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Faculty Publications

Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is a fatal, transmissible prion disease that affects captive and free-ranging deer, elk, and moose. Although the zoonotic potential of CWD is considered low, identification of multiple CWD strains and the potential for agent evolution upon serial passage hinders a defi nitive conclusion. Surveillance for CWD in free-ranging populations has documented a continual geographic spread of the disease throughout North America. CWD prions are shed from clinically and preclinically affected hosts, and CWD transmission is mediated at least in part by the environment, perhaps by soil. Much remains unknown, including the sites and mechanisms of prion …

Subsurface Facies Analysis Of The Late Cambrian Mt. Simon Sandstone In Western Ohio (Midcontinent North America), Aram Saeed, James E. Evans Jan 2012

Subsurface Facies Analysis Of The Late Cambrian Mt. Simon Sandstone In Western Ohio (Midcontinent North America), Aram Saeed, James E. Evans

School of Earth, Environment and Society Faculty Publications

The Cambrian Mt. Simon Sandstone (MSS) is a possible unconventional gas reservoir in the Illinois, Michigan, and Appalachian Basins, but comparatively little is known about the unit. This study used core and well logs from two deep exploratory wells to interpret the depositional environment of the MSS under western Ohio, where the MSS is about 120 m thick and found 1060 m below ground surface. In western Ohio, the MSS unconformably overlies the Precambrian Middle Run Formation, is conformably overlain by the Cambrian Eau Claire Formation, and has a distinctive gamma-ray log-signature. In well DGS-2627, the MSS consists of tan, …

Teacher Retention: What Motivates Highly Qualified Urban Teachers To Stay?, Orlando B. Milligan Jan 2012

Teacher Retention: What Motivates Highly Qualified Urban Teachers To Stay?, Orlando B. Milligan

Theses and Dissertations

This applied dissertation was designed to provide insight into what motivates highly qualified teachers to remain in urban schools. Research has shown that the single most important factor in a child’s education is the teacher. Consequently, the issues related to teacher recruitment and retention rank as serious problems facing urban schools and the achievement of their children.

The purpose of this study was to examine what motivates highly qualified teachers to remain in urban schools and to identify factors that may contribute to the retention and recruitment of an urban teaching corps. This study also sought to determine if there …

Heterogeneous Beliefs And Risk Neutral Skewness, Geoffrey C. Friesen, Yi Zhang, Thomas Zorn Jan 2012

Heterogeneous Beliefs And Risk Neutral Skewness, Geoffrey C. Friesen, Yi Zhang, Thomas Zorn

Department of Finance: Faculty Publications

This study tests whether investor belief differences affect the cross-sectional variation of risk-neutral skewness, using data on firm-level stock options traded on the CBOE from 2003 to 2006. Using well known proxies for heterogeneous beliefs, we find that stocks with greater belief differences have more negative skews, even after controlling for systematic risk and other firm-level variables known to affect skewness. This result also goes beyond the net price pressure hypothesis suggested by Bollen and Whaley (2004). Factor analysis identifies latent variables linked to systematic risk and belief differences. The belief factor explains more variation in the risk-neutral density than …

Cold War Legacies In Digital Editing, Amanda A. Gailey Jan 2012

Cold War Legacies In Digital Editing, Amanda A. Gailey

Department of English: Faculty Publications

The editorial methods developed during the Cold War professionalized scholarly editing and appealed to new ideas about the relationship between American academics and the government by aligning with the supposedly value-neutral goals and methods of the behavioral sciences, much to the discomfort of many humanists. Some of the implicit assumptions underlying midcentury editorial methods persist in digital editing, and may risk positioning digital editions as marginalized scholarship within the digital era, just as print scholarly editions became widely considered second-rate scholarship in the twentieth century.

Hydraulic Conductivity Of The High Plains Aquifer Re-Evaluated Using Surface Drainage Patterns, Wei Luo, Darryll T. Pederson Jan 2012

Hydraulic Conductivity Of The High Plains Aquifer Re-Evaluated Using Surface Drainage Patterns, Wei Luo, Darryll T. Pederson

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

The High Plains Aquifer (HPA), underlying parts of 8 states from South Dakota to Texas, is one of the largest fresh water aquifers in the world and accounts for 30% of the groundwater used for irrigation in the US. Determining the distribution of HPA’s hydraulic conductivity (K) is critical for water management and addressing water quality issues. K is traditionally estimated from well pumping data coupled with computer modeling and is known to be highly variable, spanning several orders of magnitude for the same type of rock. Here we show that applying our innovative method of determining effective …

Novice Principals’ Perceptions Of Effective Leadership Practices And Their Principal Preparation Programs, Melissa Y. Wilson Jan 2012

Novice Principals’ Perceptions Of Effective Leadership Practices And Their Principal Preparation Programs, Melissa Y. Wilson

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine novice principals’ perceptions of effective leadership practices and the elements of their principal preparation program that prepared them for the role of school leader. A mixed-methods study was utilized by the researcher to gather quantitative data through the use of an online survey and to gather qualitative data through subsequent focus-group interviews to address the proposal’s three research questions: (a) What are the differences (if any) between the perceptions of novice elementary, middle, and high school principals regarding the five instructional leadership practices identified by Kouzes and Posner (2003; i.e., challenging the …

Progressive Abandonment And Planform Changes Of The Central Platte River In Nebraska, Central Usa, Over Historical Timeframes, John D. Horn, R. Matthew Joeckel, Christopher R. Fielding

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

This paper presents data compiled from aerial photography, General Land Office maps (GLOs), and discharge data from the central Platte River in Nebraska that quantify and provide a new understanding of channel evolution and abandonment in a braided stream. Analyses of aerial photographs and GLOs in ArcMap™ show that channel area decreased by an average of 46% from 1938 to 2006 and that channel widths in 1858 were an average of 539% greater than in 2006. Annual discharge during 1942–2006 does not show a clear long-term relationship with the decrease in channel width and area. Rather, stabilization through vegetation of …

Improving Student Attitudes About Learning Science And Student Scientific Reasoning Skills, Douglas K. Duncan, Leilani Arthurs Jan 2012

Improving Student Attitudes About Learning Science And Student Scientific Reasoning Skills, Douglas K. Duncan, Leilani Arthurs

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Student attitudes about learning science and student ideas about the nature of science were compared at the end of two astronomy courses taught in Fall 2007, a course with a traditional astronomy curriculum and a transformed course, whose traditional astronomy curriculum was supplemented by an embedded curriculum that explicitly addressed the nature of science and student metacognition (i.e., thinking about one’s own thinking.) The embedded curriculum in the transformed course gave students practice at evaluating examples of valid science and pseudoscience found on the internet; it also provided students opportunities to discuss what they think about learning science. Student attitudes …

Trends In Wind Speed At Wind Turbine Height Of 80 M Over The Contiguous United States Using The North American Regional Reanalysis (Narr), Eric Holt, Jun Wang Jan 2012

Trends In Wind Speed At Wind Turbine Height Of 80 M Over The Contiguous United States Using The North American Regional Reanalysis (Narr), Eric Holt, Jun Wang

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

The trends in wind speed at a typical wind turbine hub height (80 m) are analyzed using the North American Regional Reanalysis (NARR) dataset for 1979–2009. A method, assuming the wind profile in the lower boundary layer as power-law functions of altitude, is developed to invert the power exponent (in the power-law equation) from the NARR data and to compute the following variables at 80 m that are needed for the estimation and interpretation of the trend in wind speed: air density, zonal wind u, meridional wind v, and wind speed. Statistically significant and positive annual trends are …

Book Review: The Morality Of Social Identity, David Moshman Jan 2012

Book Review: The Morality Of Social Identity, David Moshman

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

Morality tells us how to treat each other. Social identity connects us to each other. But all is not well. Social identity connects us to a group and thus to its members. Morality requires justice for everyone, regardless of group. Thus considerations of morality and social identity often pull in different directions (Appiah, 2005; Moshman, 2007; Sen, 2006).

Two excellent and complementary new books, Children and Social Exclusion and Narrative and the Politics of Identity, address the developmental roots and implications of these issues. The first reviews and integrates multiple programs of research on children’s developing judgments about dilemmas …

Context. Cygnus X-3 (Cyg X-3) is a well-known microquasar producing variable emission at all wavelengths. Cyg X-3 is a prominent X-ray binary producing relativistic jets, and studying its high energy emission is crucial for the understanding of the fundamental acceleration processes in accreting compact objects. Aims. Our goal is to study extreme particle acceleration and γ-ray production above 100 MeV during special spectral states of Cyg X-3 usually characterized by a low hard X-ray flux and enhanced soft X-ray states. Methods. We observed Cyg X-3 with the AGILE satellite in extended time intervals from 2009 Jun.–Jul., and 2009 Nov.–2010 Jul. …

Measurement Of The Inclusive Production Cross Sections For Forward Jets And For Dijet Events With One Forward And One Central Jet In Pp Collisions At √S = 7 Tev, S. Chatrchyan, Marc M. Baarmand, B. Dorney, Marcus Hohlmann, Himali Kalakhety, Igor Vodopiyanov, The Cms Collaboration Jan 2012

Measurement Of The Inclusive Production Cross Sections For Forward Jets And For Dijet Events With One Forward And One Central Jet In Pp Collisions At √S = 7 Tev, S. Chatrchyan, Marc M. Baarmand, B. Dorney, Marcus Hohlmann, Himali Kalakhety, Igor Vodopiyanov, The Cms Collaboration

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

The inclusive production cross sections for forward jets, as well for jets in dijet events with at least one jet emitted at central and the other at forward pseudorapidities, are measured in the range of transverse momenta pT = 35-150 GeV/c in proton-proton collisions at √s =7 TeV by the CMS experiment at the LHC. Forward jets are measured within pseudorapidities 3.2 < |η| < 4.7, and central jets within the |η| < 2.8 range. The differential cross sections d2σ/dpT dη are compared to predictions from three approaches in perturbative quantum chromodynamics: (i) next-to-leading-order calculations obtained with and without matching to parton-shower Monte Carlo simulations, (ii) pythia and herwig parton-shower event generators with different tunes of parameters, and (iii) cascade and hej models, including different non-collinear corrections to standard single-parton radiation. The single-jet inclusive forward jet spectrum is well described by all models, but not all predictions are consistent with the spectra observed for the forward-central dijet events.

All Illnesses Are (Not) Created Equal: Reforming Federal Mental Health Insurance Law, Stacey A. Tovino Jan 2012

All Illnesses Are (Not) Created Equal: Reforming Federal Mental Health Insurance Law, Stacey A. Tovino

Faculty Articles

This article is the second, and most important, installment in a three-part series that presents a comprehensive challenge to lingering legal distinctions between physical and mental illness. The basic impetus for this historical, medical, and legal project is a belief that there exists no rational or consistent method of distinguishing physical and mental illness in the context of health insurance law. The first installment in this series narrowly inquired as to whether a particular set of disorders, the postpartum mood disorders, are or should be classified as physical or mental illnesses in a range of health law contexts. This second …

Identification And Purity Testing Of Maize Hybrids With One Parent In Common By Ultrathin-Layer Isoelectric Focusing Of Seed Salt-Soluble Proteins, Xiao-Yue Dou, Min Yan, Yu-Feng Xu, Khalid Hussain, Yuan-Zhi Liu, Feng Lin

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

The objective of this study was to discriminate 11 maize hybrids with one parent in common using ultrathin-layer isoelectric focusing (UTLIEF) of seed salt-soluble proteins in 0.02% NaCl solution in the laboratory. Thirty-two protein bands were found in the pH range of 5.0-7.0, 62.5% of which were polymorphic. Six hybrids with the same male parent and 5 hybrids with the same female parent were differentiated by their patterns and numbers of polymorphic protein bands. The result showed that UTLIEF has the characteristics of high resolution to discriminate close genetic relationships. Meanwhile, the genetic purity of 11 hybrids were tested, and …

Combined Treatment Of Modified Atmosphere Packaging And 1-Methylcyclopropene Improves Postharvest Quality Of Japanese Plums, Mustafa Erkan, Hakan Eski̇ Jan 2012

Combined Treatment Of Modified Atmosphere Packaging And 1-Methylcyclopropene Improves Postharvest Quality Of Japanese Plums, Mustafa Erkan, Hakan Eski̇

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Two Japanese-type plum (Prunus salicina Lindell) cultivars, 'Autumn Giant' and 'Black Beauty', were harvested at commercial maturity stage and either packed in nonperforated modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) or treated with a 500 ppb dose of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) alone or given a combination of 1-MCP and MAP. After these treatments, the plum samples were stored at 0 °C for 60 days. Treatment with either 1-MCP or modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) alone or with the 1-MCP+MAP combination reduced fruit softening, ethylene production, respiration rate, weight loss, and flesh browning, and resulted in higher flesh firmness, titratable acidity, and total soluble solids as …

The Humanitarian And Human Rights Duties Of The United Nations Security Council, George E. Weber Jan 2012

The Humanitarian And Human Rights Duties Of The United Nations Security Council, George E. Weber

University of Baltimore Journal of International Law

International intervention has increased in recent history for the abuses of humanitarian law and human rights. This article reflects on the history of human rights and humanitarian law reasoned interventions authorized by the United Nations Security Council and examines whether a duty now exists in international law for future action. The question of whether a duty exists, and the legal repercussions of failing to exercise that duty, is of paramount importance to international law. Whether the duty currently exists or is currently developing, the analysis that follows will show why the Security Council should have the duty of intervention and …

“Injustice Anywhere Is A Threat To Justice Everywhere” Internal Vs. International Armed Conflicts: Should The Distinction Be Eliminated?, Laura Chafey Jan 2012

“Injustice Anywhere Is A Threat To Justice Everywhere” Internal Vs. International Armed Conflicts: Should The Distinction Be Eliminated?, Laura Chafey

University of Baltimore Journal of International Law

This article discusses international humanitarian law, particularly the Geneva Conventions and its Additional Protocols. It analyzes the rights of protected persons under the Geneva Conventions, such as prisoners of war and civilians, as well as the obligations of States during armed conflicts. Furthermore, the article points out the flaws in the Geneva Conventions, such as the discrepancy between the obligations of States during an international armed conflict vs. during an internal armed conflicts. It argues that this distinction between international and internal armed conflicts should be eliminated and that States’ obligations should be the same for both conflicts.

A two-year satellite telemetry study was initiated in May 2000 at a Double-crested Cormorant (Phalacrocorax auritus) breeding colony on Little Galloo Island (LGI) in eastern Lake Ontario, New York, USA, which is managed by egg-oiling. The objective was to describe cormorant (N = 26/year) movements, specifically during the period of reproductive management by egg-oiling and seasonally (breeding, migration and wintering). Egg-oiling at two-week intervals resulted in a hatch success on LGI of 5.7% for 2000 and 2001, combined. The majority (97%) of core use areas of marked cormorants contained LGI throughout three egg-oiling treatments (six weeks), and 71% …

Site Use Of European Starlings Wintering In Central New Jersey, H. Jeffrey Homan, Anthony A. Slowik, Linda B. Penry, George M. Linz, Wendy Anderson Jan 2012

Site Use Of European Starlings Wintering In Central New Jersey, H. Jeffrey Homan, Anthony A. Slowik, Linda B. Penry, George M. Linz, Wendy Anderson

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Managing European starlings with DRC-1339 near urban and suburban areas can lead to adverse publicity resulting from encounters by the public with dead and dying birds. Collectors could retrieve the birds, if the likely sites of mass mortalities were known. In December 2009, we radio tagged 50 starlings at 3 sites in central New Jersey and studied their movements and behavior. Two of the sites were ensconced in a mosaic of suburban and urban habitats, whereas the other was in a rural setting. The sites were selected from a list of agricultural producers that had requested assistance from the Wildlife …
