A Comparison Of Professional Traders And Psychopaths In A Simulated Non-Zero Sum Game, Thomas Noll Jd, Md, Jérôme Endrass Ppd, Pascal Scherrer, Astrid Rossegger Ppd, Frank Urbaniok Ppd, Andreas Mokros Dec 2012

A Comparison Of Professional Traders And Psychopaths In A Simulated Non-Zero Sum Game, Thomas Noll Jd, Md, Jérôme Endrass Ppd, Pascal Scherrer, Astrid Rossegger Ppd, Frank Urbaniok Ppd, Andreas Mokros

Catalyst: A Social Justice Forum

In a prior study psychopathic individuals showed a diminished level of cooperativeness but realized higher individual rewards in a prisoner’s dilemma game, compared with community controls. The present study replicated this finding with professional bank traders, who exhibited less cooperative behavior than both of the aforermentioned groups (community controls and psychopathic patients). While the bank traders did not obtain a higher gain than the psychopathic individuals at an absolute level, they maximized the discrepancy between their own profit and the yield of their anonymous computerized gaming partner. The bank traders were more prone than psychopathic patients to rely on strategies …

Competing Forces In Sustainable Gambling: Towards A Balanced Approach, Nerilee Hing Dec 2012

Competing Forces In Sustainable Gambling: Towards A Balanced Approach, Nerilee Hing

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

Social responsibility in gambling is increasingly becoming both a policy issue for governments and industries, and a management issue for gambling operators. While many legalized commercial gambling operators adopt a purely economic orientation to their business, non-profit, charity gambling operators tend to focus on the social benefits of their activities. This paper argues that neither a purely economic nor social orientation to gambling is sustainable in the long-term, but that a balance between the two is needed. A well accepted model of corporate social responsibility is adapted to illuminate the competing forces at work in achieving sustainable gambling, and to …

Research findings indicate significant differences between the family market and other markets.

Assessing The Role Of Library Associations In Promoting Research Culture In Lis, Rubina Bhatti, Tariq Mahmood Chohan Dec 2012

Assessing The Role Of Library Associations In Promoting Research Culture In Lis, Rubina Bhatti, Tariq Mahmood Chohan

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Library Associations play an important role in the promotion of librarianship as a profession vital to an informed and knowledgeable society. This paper discusses the importance of research in LIS, and considers the role of professional association in recognizing, enabling and promoting a research culture amongst qualified professionals. It shows that if the library profession is to grow and thrive as a true profession, demonstrating not only typical practice, but also considered scholarly approaches to the issues of its day, then its commitment in apt and relevant research practice is indispensable. It addresses the prospects, problems and challenges posed in …

Results Of Epidemiological Studies Of Blood Pressure Are Biased By Continuous Variation In Arm Size Related To Body Mass, Stanley J. Uluaszek, Maciej Hennberg Dec 2012

Results Of Epidemiological Studies Of Blood Pressure Are Biased By Continuous Variation In Arm Size Related To Body Mass, Stanley J. Uluaszek, Maciej Hennberg

Human Biology

In cross-sectional epidemiological studies, blood pressure (BP) is often found to be positively correlated with fatness. Usually sphygmomanometers with only one cuff size for adults are used to measure BP while arm circumference (AC) influences BP readings. We have studied cross-sectional anthropometric and BP data of adult men and women from three populations: Cook Islanders (n = 259), Papua New Guinean: Purari (n = 295), and Ok Tedi (n = 274). These were selected because of their diverse socio-economic, anthropometric, and BP characteristics. Partial correlations and regressions were used to analyze these data. Systolic and diastolic pressures (SBP, DBP) showed …

Pcadmix: Principal Components-Based Assignment Of Ancestry Along Each Chromosome In Individuals With Admixed Ancestry From Two Or More Populations, Abra Brisbin, Katarzyna Bryc, Jake Byrnes, Fouad Zakharia, Larsson Omberg, Jeremiah Degenhardt, Andrew Reynolds, Harry Ostrer, Jason G. Mezey, Carlos D. Bustamante

Human Biology

Identifying ancestry along each chromosome in admixed individuals provides a wealth of information for understanding the population genetic history of admixture events and is valuable for admixture mapping and identifying recent targets of selection. We present PCAdmix (available at https://sites.google.com/site/pcadmix/home), a Principal Componentsbased algorithm for determining ancestry along each chromosome from a high-density, genome-wide set of phased single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) genotypes of admixed individuals. We compare our method to HAPMIX on simulated data from two ancestral populations, and we find high concordance between the methods. Our method also has better accuracy than LAMP when applied to three-population admixture, a situation …

Rio2016: Mega-Event Urban Planning And Imagining The Anti-Olympics Scale-Shift Process, Lana Schissel Dec 2012

Rio2016: Mega-Event Urban Planning And Imagining The Anti-Olympics Scale-Shift Process, Lana Schissel

Open Access Theses

Today’s sporting mega-events are a globally recognized urban spectacle for their capacity to stimulate economic growth, revitalize urban cityscapes and promote their respective metropolis to a transnational audience. Yet in spite of the ubiquitous enthusiasm touted by Olympic stakeholders, there is a growing literature documenting the negative impacts that sporting mega-events have on the quality of life of host-city residents. In part one of this work, I explicate the “Olympic Planning Equation”: a three part analysis that links the negative ramifications experienced by host city citizens, to the ambitions of Olympic stakeholders and their execution of the event. Part two …

Library Research

A group of librarians, other information professionals, scientists and research administrators met to discuss the challenges that research libraries are currently facing. After the meeting a survey was conducted to obtain additional input from the group on several key challenges that arose from the discussions. The purpose of the meeting and survey was threefold: 1. Examine in detail, from a variety of perspectives, how the world of research is changing and the impact these changes have on the direction of research libraries. 2. Create an informed vision of how research libraries can be a vital partner to researchers. 3. Suggest …

Local Filters Limit Species Diversity, But Species Pools Determine Composition, Tara K. Rajaniemi, Deborah E. Goldberg, Roy Turkington, Andrew R. Dyer Dec 2012

Local Filters Limit Species Diversity, But Species Pools Determine Composition, Tara K. Rajaniemi, Deborah E. Goldberg, Roy Turkington, Andrew R. Dyer

Faculty Publications

In a series of three experiments, we tested for effects of species pools, resource stress, and species interactions on four aspects of community structure: species richness, evenness, species composition, and functional group composition. We also examined whether the impacts of species interactions on the community varied with resource availability or species pool. Communities of sand dune annuals grew from seed bank samples collected from two sites in three different years, so that the species pool differed at two levels: the source site and the year of seed bank collection. Communities experienced one of three irrigation treatments and a range of …
