Effets Du Sida Sur La Côte D'Ivoire Et Stratégies Culturellement Pertinentes Pour En Prévenir La Propagation, Austin Lawry
The Kennesaw Tower Undergraduate Foreign Language Research Journal
Côte D’Ivoire remains a vital case in the fight against AIDS proliferation due to its status as one of the most centralized and influential state in West Africa. This paper analyzes the unique case that Côte D’Ivoire presents socially, economically and politically and how an effective and comprehensive prevention program must incorporate these three dimensions. Particular attention is given to the impact of recent cultural shifts in understanding HIV/AIDS, the Migrant Labor Thesis, the costs of the disease, and the role of war. Finally, through integrating these unique dimensions with the problems reported by existing AIDS prevention programs, several solutions …

On The Importance Of Modeling Stent Procedure For Predicting Arterial Mechanics, Shijia Zhao, Linxia Gu, Stacey R. Froemming
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
The stent-artery interactions have been increasingly studied using the finite element method for better understanding of the biomechanical environment changes on the artery and its implications. However, the deployment of balloon-expandable stents was generally simplified without considering the balloon-stent interactions, the initial crimping process of the stent, its overexpansion routinely used in the clinical practice, or its recoil process. In this work, the stenting procedure was mimicked by incorporating all the above-mentioned simplifications. The impact of various simplifications on the stent-induced arterial stresses was systematically investigated. The plastic strain history of stent and its resulted geometrical variations, as well as …

Thermalization And Initial State-Recurrence In Discrete Kdv-Like Lattices, Garrett Taylor Nieddu
Thermalization And Initial State-Recurrence In Discrete Kdv-Like Lattices, Garrett Taylor Nieddu
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Three discretizations of the Korteweg de-Vries equation are studied; convergence rate, initial state-recurrence, and the energy distribution of the three schemes are all considered. For each discrete scheme over 300 lattices with varying grid sizes were investigated, and the solutions were compared with other lattices from the same scheme, as well as solutions from the other two. It is found that the two schemes that are least accurate display the best recurrence at intermediate grid sizes, away from convergence. This is a notable result because the best recurrence is expected to be found in the most accurate, and converged lattices. …
Monitored Disclosure: A Way To Avoid Legislative Supremacy In Redistricting Litigation, Mark Tyson
Monitored Disclosure: A Way To Avoid Legislative Supremacy In Redistricting Litigation, Mark Tyson
Washington Law Review
The Speech or Debate Clause of the U.S. Constitution protects members of Congress from testifying about “legislative acts” or having “legislative acts” used against them as evidence. U.S. Supreme Court decisions delineating the scope of what constitutes a “legislative act” have an episodic feel and have failed to create a readily applicable test for new factual scenarios. One such scenario occurs when members of Congress communicate with state legislators regarding congressional redistricting. Courts must know how to handle instances where members of Congress assert legislative privilege in the redistricting context, and specifically when members of Congress assert the privilege in …
Perceptions Of Mental Illness In The Legal System, Krista Wallace
Perceptions Of Mental Illness In The Legal System, Krista Wallace
Criminal Justice
Previous research suggests that there are stereotypes and misperceptions about the mentally ill population which affect juror’s decision making in cases where the insanity defense is raised. Many individuals believe it to be a “loophole” in the criminal justice system for offenders to escape punishment (Skeem and Golding, 2002). This study explores community perceptions of schizophrenia and personality disorders in a legal context. Results support that individuals are significantly less confident of their verdict decisions when the offender has a mental illness than when the offender has no mental illness. In addition, the presence of a mental illness significantly affects …

A Millenial Little Pieces: Selected Writings From A Gen-Y, Lauren Elizabeth Valentine Servideo
Journalism Program
This is an anthology of my favorite pieces written during my time at SUNY Albany. The subject matter of each piece differs wildly from the next, but they do share one thing in common, and that is my focus on character and cultural studies. Exploring and dissecting the works of Truman Capote, Tom Wolfe, Martha Gellhorn, and various other literary journalists throughout my undergraduate career has inspired the style of all the creative non-fiction included in A Millenial Little Pieces: Selected Writings from a Gen-Y.

Interactive Marketing Strategies In Television Networks: Incorporating Satellite Media Tours In Twitter, Kathleen Maloney
Interactive Marketing Strategies In Television Networks: Incorporating Satellite Media Tours In Twitter, Kathleen Maloney
Journalism
The following study investigates how to design and implement an effective interactive marketing strategy for the television industry. The study also explores how satellite media tours and social media, specifically Twitter, can be used together in an interactive marketing plan. As new technology is continuously being developed and target audiences are increasingly demanding instantaneous interactive content, it is pertinent to understand how to successfully use these tools in a marketing plan to engage audiences. According to Nick Abramovich, the Chief Executive Officer of Synaptic Digital, a multichannel digital media creation and distribution platform (Inc Magazine, 2011), “brands are realizing that …

The Reviresco Rainbow Interactive Theatre Model: A Study Combining Theatre Of The Oppressed And Theatre In Education For The Development Of A New Model For Social Literacy, Dustin M. Carlson
Master's Theses
The Reviresco Rainbow Interactive Theatre Model reflects an intense quest into the use of theatre and dramatic role play for the enhancement of social education. Apathy is a common problem in today’s learning environment due to the overwhelming pressure of academia and the ignorance of social literacy. The Reviresco Rainbow Interactive Theatre Model gives students, educators, and the community creative avenues to address the current learning climate in schools, and tools to instill the value of theatre arts in education. The model includes the study, analysis, and combination of Theatre of the Oppressed and Theatre in Education practices to form …

False Smut Of Rice: Histological Analysis Of Infection, Liem Thi Thanh Nguyen
False Smut Of Rice: Histological Analysis Of Infection, Liem Thi Thanh Nguyen
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
False smut of rice, caused by Ustilaginoidea virens (Cooke) Takahashi (Teleomorph: Villosiclava virens), has become a common disease in most major rice growing regions throughout the world. Considerable confusion exists regarding the infection process and the disease cycle. Therefore, a clearer understanding of pathogenesis caused by Ustilaginoidea virens is critical for future efforts to develop genetic and chemical tools to manage false smut in Arkansas and other regions of the world. The overall goal of this research was to clarify the infection process underlying false smut, with emphasis on comparing and contrasting the histological basis of root and foliar infections. …
Comparing The Effects Of Simulated, Intelligent Audible, Checklists And Analog Checklists In Simulated Flight, Bryan Hilton
Comparing The Effects Of Simulated, Intelligent Audible, Checklists And Analog Checklists In Simulated Flight, Bryan Hilton
Dissertations
This study examined the effect of using a simulated intelligent audible checklist in simulated flight as compared to a standard analog (paper) checklist. Participants were three Western Michigan University students in the College of Aviation. All participants were licensed pilots with instrument ratings. The main dependent variable was the number of checklist errors or omissions committed by the pilots in simulated flight. During each flight, each participant could make up to 42 errors. The error count would initiate at the appropriate time to perform the “before-take off checklist” and would end one minute after parking the plane, the logical time …
Effects Of Stereo And Screen Size On The Legibility Of Three-Dimensional Streamtube Visualization, Jian Chen, Haipeng Cai, Alexander P. Auchus, David H. Laidlaw
Effects Of Stereo And Screen Size On The Legibility Of Three-Dimensional Streamtube Visualization, Jian Chen, Haipeng Cai, Alexander P. Auchus, David H. Laidlaw
Faculty Publications
We report the impact of display characteristics (stereo and size) on task performance in diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (DMRI) in a user study with 12 participants. The hypotheses were that (1) adding stereo and increasing display size would improve task accuracy and reduce completion time, and (2) the greater the complexity of a spatial task, the greater the benefits of an improved display. Thus we expected to see greater performance gains when detailed visual reasoning was required. Participants used dense streamtube visualizations to perform five representative tasks: (1) determine the higher average fractional anisotropy (FA) values between two regions, (2) …
Being Active And Impulsive: The Role Of Goals For Action And Inaction In Self-Control, Justin Hepler, Dolores Albarracin, Kathleen C. Mcculloch, Kenji Noguchi
Being Active And Impulsive: The Role Of Goals For Action And Inaction In Self-Control, Justin Hepler, Dolores Albarracin, Kathleen C. Mcculloch, Kenji Noguchi
Faculty Publications
Although self-control often requires behavioral inaction (i.e., not eating a piece of cake), the process of inhibiting impulsive behavior is commonly characterized as cognitively active (i.e., actively exerting self-control). Two experiments examined whether motivation for action or inaction facilitates self-control behavior in the presence of tempting stimuli. Experiment 1 used a delay discounting task to assess the ability to delay gratification with respect to money. Experiment 2 used a Go/No-Go task to assess the ability to inhibit a dominant but incorrect motor response to the words "condom" and "sex". The results demonstrate that goals for inaction promote self-control, whereas goals …
Ghosts Of The Mind: The Supernatural And Madness In Victorian Gothic Literature, Stephanie F. Craig
Ghosts Of The Mind: The Supernatural And Madness In Victorian Gothic Literature, Stephanie F. Craig
Honors Theses
The Victorian era was arguably the most productive time for the Gothic genre. Laden with supernatural experiences and insanity around every corner, the Gothic created a distinct genre of eeriness and morbidity. The key to understanding the genre’s development lies in the culture that caused it to thrive. Victorian culture saw the emergence of supernatural experimentation, particularly in the Spiritualist movement, as well as the further development of psychology. These elements of Victorian culture are crucial in the development of the Gothic genre. Just as political or economic factors may influence the style, content, and format of a literary genre, …
Parenting Styles, Peer Pressure, And The Formation Of Antisocial Behavior, Erinisha L. Johnson
Parenting Styles, Peer Pressure, And The Formation Of Antisocial Behavior, Erinisha L. Johnson
Honors Theses
The current study examined the relationship between antisocial behavior, negative parenting, and peer pressure. It was predicted that peer pressure and negative parenting would be positively correlated with antisocial behavior, but that negative parenting would be more statistically significant. There were 177 male and female college students who completed the Subtypes of Antisocial Behavior questionnaire, the Measurement of Parenting Style, the Peer Pressure and Popularity questionnaire, and a short demographics survey. Results indicated that negative parenting and peer pressure were both related to antisocial behavior (p< .001). However, the final hypothesis was rejected because the results indicated that peer pressure (p < .001) and not negative parenting (p<.05), showed to be more statistically significant. It may be suggested that peer pressure may overpower parenting, after a certain age.
English Identity In The Writings Of John Milton, Hannah E. Ryan
English Identity In The Writings Of John Milton, Hannah E. Ryan
Honors Theses
John Milton is an essential writer to the English canon. Understanding his life and thought is necessary to understanding his corpus. This thesis will examine Milton’s nationalism in several major and minor poems as well as in some of Milton’s prose. It will argue that Milton’s nationalism is difficult to trace chronologically, but that education is always essential to Milton’s national vision of England.
A Systematic Literature Review Of Household Food Security And Overweight/Obese Status Among Low-Income Children, Meaghan A. Clark
A Systematic Literature Review Of Household Food Security And Overweight/Obese Status Among Low-Income Children, Meaghan A. Clark
Honors Theses
A systematic literature review approach was used to determine the extent of knowledge regarding low-income children’s BMI and household food insecurity. Recommendations were made for impending research, studies, and practices regarding the consensus of current knowledge in relation to low-income children with higher BMIs that come from a food insecure household. Current studies were analyzed, with special attention to methods and findings.
