Does Eco-Hotels’ Direct Exposure To Green Spaces Provide Positive Benefits To The Visitors' Health?, Eddie N. Sanchez

Open Access Theses

During the last decade the ecotourism business has boomed in Puerto Rico. There are significant increases in eco-related businesses around the Island. The majority of ecorelated businesses in Puerto Rico are tour guided adventures, canopy tours, surfing, biking, among others. All the activities mentioned above have the same purpose: physical activity and group interaction. These activities promote a healthier environment for the participants, which help increase their physical activity level and at the same time encourage the use of the green spaces. Can The Effective Use Of Imagery In Marketing Publications Help Create A More Diversified Campus Community At Illinois State University?, Deanne Hamblin

ISU Ethnography of the University Initiative

Higher education management has shifted over time; replacing the democratic model with the business model. As a result, universities have incorporated extensive marketing campaigns to target students for recruitment. Unfortunately, the imagery used in marketing publications in these campaigns is not always effective in creating diversified campus communities. This publication will summarize the ethnographic study conducted in the fall of 2012 to assess Illinois State University’s use of imagery in their marketing campaigns to first year students. Surveys, observations, and a review of photographs used in publications over the course of Illinois State University’s marketing history will be discussed and …

Climate Change: Hope, Despair, And Planning, Ethan Seltzer Dec 2012

Climate Change: Hope, Despair, And Planning, Ethan Seltzer

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations

The purpose for this paper: How can I engage students in thinking about climate change as a planning issue without glossing over or disregarding their growing skepticism about their own futures? This paper is not so much about how I teach, or how I could teach. Rather, it is more conceptual with respect to planning itself. More to the point: how does planning fit into this emerging, and dark, worldview? Planning, after all, is a discipline steeped in hope, and climate change seems to be bringing forth, at least for some, a palpable wave of despair. This is a direct …

Integrating Alternative Energy Production Into The Public School Science Curriculum, Benjamin Overbeek Dec 2012

Integrating Alternative Energy Production Into The Public School Science Curriculum, Benjamin Overbeek

Honors Theses

In the next few years, many teachers will be challenged in new ways. Student engagement will be at a premium and state standards will be more specific, shifting their focus towards college readiness, integration of curriculum, and developing sound reasoning and critical thinking skills. While the education field is accustomed to adapting and adjusting “on the go”, it may be ill-prepared for this fresh round of changes. Teachers and curriculum directors need resources to help them adapt the classrooms to reflect the more comprehensive design implied by the new standards (Next Generation Science Standards, 2012). This paper promotes a spiral …

Working in teams, the senior design project encourages students to use everything learned in the engineering and computer design programs to create a practical, real world solution to an engineering challenge.

Beyond the classroom ...

Because of the requirement to work in teams, students also build good communication skills, presentation skills and even business writing skills. They also have to …
