Stroboscopic Training Enhances Anticipatory Timing, Trevor Q. Smith, Stephen R. Mitroff Oct 2012

Stroboscopic Training Enhances Anticipatory Timing, Trevor Q. Smith, Stephen R. Mitroff

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 5(4) : 344-353, 2012. The dynamic aspects of sports often place heavy demands on visual processing. As such, an important goal for sports training should be to enhance visual abilities. Recent research has suggested that training in a stroboscopic environment, where visual experiences alternate between visible and obscured, may provide a means of improving attentional and visual abilities. The current study explored whether stroboscopic training could impact anticipatory timing—the ability to predict where a moving stimulus will be at a specific point in time. Anticipatory timing is a critical skill for both sports and non-sports …

Energy Ratings Hit Commercial Real Estate - California Lights The Way, Jonathan Cahill Oct 2012

Energy Ratings Hit Commercial Real Estate - California Lights The Way, Jonathan Cahill

The Journal of Business, Entrepreneurship & the Law

The Energy Star Program has been extremely successful for consumer appliances and electronics, but can this success translate to commercial real estate? In the United States, commercial buildings account for nearly nineteen percent of energy-related carbon dioxide emissions. Consequently, energy rating of buildings has become an increasingly attractive way to combat pollution and lower energy consumption. Despite this, the United States does not yet have a federal policy requiring energy usage disclosure for buildings. This has left state and local governments to lead the way in innovative and effective reporting regimes. California's response to this regulatory vacuum is Assembly Bill …

Determined By The Community: Cbpr In Alaska Native Communities Building Local Control And Self-Determination, Jordan P. Lewis, Keri Boyd

Journal of Indigenous Research

Objectives: Past research conducted with Alaska Native communities involved researchers entering the community to gather data then leaving with that data never being returned or presented or the researchers to be heard from again. The communities were not made aware of the findings, how the data was used, or where the information was published. This method of research resulted in significant mistrust of researchers by tribal communities. This article will briefly describe the context and history of research with Alaska Native people; provide an overview of the complex approval process for research through two case studies; highlight the relevant …

Decline In Health For Older Adults: 5-Year Change In 13 Key Measures Of Standardized Health, Paula H. Diehr, Stephen M. Thielke, Anne B. Newman, Calvin H. Hirsch, Russell Tracy

UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Introduction

The health of older adults declines over time, but there are many ways of measuring health. We examined whether all measures declined at the same rate, or whether some aspects of health were less sensitive to aging than others.

Methods

We compared the decline in 13 measures of physical, mental, and functional health from the Cardiovascular Health Study: hospitalization, bed days, cognition, extremity strength, feelings about life as a whole, satisfaction with the purpose of life, self-rated health, depression, digit symbol substitution test, grip strength, ADLs, IADLs, and gait speed. Each measure was standardized against self-rated health. We compared …

Construct-Validity Of The Engagement With Challenge Measure For Adolescents: Structural- And Criterion-Validity Evidence, E. Whitney G. Moore, David Hansen

Kinesiology, Health and Sport Studies

For adolescents, engaging with challenge is a key developmental task, hypothesized to support development of adult-like competencies (e.g., agency and self-direction; Larson, 2000). This study aimed to assess the construct-validity (structural- and concurrent-validity) of a new self-report measure assessing adolescents’ engagement with challenge to help researchers understand how different settings and the conditions in these settings support adolescents’ development. The sample consisted of 337 adolescents in 10 FFA programs along with the adult advisors in each program. Adolescents completed a questionnaire, which included the Engagement with Challenge measure and the following criterion variables: number of contests completed, participation frequency, and …
