Using The Critical Incident Technique To Assess Gaming Customer Satisfaction, Lesley Johnson Dec 2012

Using The Critical Incident Technique To Assess Gaming Customer Satisfaction, Lesley Johnson

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

Before gaming organizations can initiate efforts to service their customers, they must be able to effectively manage the service encounter. Although every service encounter is not necessarily critical to satisfaction, it is not always obvious which are crucial to the customer and which are not. Using critical incidents reported by gaming customers and employees, this study identifies service encounters that both parties perceive as being very satisfactory or very dissatisfactory from the customer's point of view. Identifying particularly positive and negative customer service experiences can provide direction for management in allocating resources specifically to those areas that maximize customer satisfaction …

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

This exploratory research examined relationships between casino play and hedonic factors. The hedonic factors examined were emotion, sensation seeking and impulsivity, absorbing experiences, and analytical characteristics. Differences between slot players and table game players were measured. The subjects were a convenience sampling of 1,010 casino gamblers at a Las Vegas Strip casino catering to out of town visitors. All participants completed a 45- item survey. The constructs were measured using the Mehrabian and Russell (1974) pleasure, arousal, and dominance scale; the Zuckerman Kuhlman sensation seeking and impulsivity scale; the Swanson (1978) absorbing experience scale; and an analytical scale developed by …

A Proposed Typology Of Odyssey Slot Machine Gamblers, Lorraine Cebollero, Karl Mayer, Stanley Pinkos

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

This paper discusses the development of a typology of gamblers who play the Odyssey slot machine. Qualitative research methods were employed, using an ethnographic approach to the research setting. Two typologies are presented and discussed, one for the Odyssey Players and a second for the Odyssey Observers. While the potential application of these two typologies to the more general classification of all slot machine gamblers is unknown, it is believed that this paper represents the first study of its kind in the gaming industry. As such, it may provide a foundation for both academics who are interested in conducting further …

Social Costs Of Gambling: A Comparative Study Of Nutmeg And Cheese State Gamblers, William N. Thompson, Ricardo Gazel, Dan Rickman

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

An analysis of the social costs of problem gambling finds similar results from two surveys of gamblers in treatment in Wisconsin (N=98) and Connecticut (N=112). Cost factors examined include lost work time and unemployment, bad debts, thefts, civil court costs, criminal justice system costs, and welfare costs. The problem gambler in Wisconsin imposes an annual cost of $8,681 on other persons, while Connecticut costs amount to $15,994. The variations between the two groups surveyed are found, for the most part, in costs of thefts. The differences can be explained by the fact that legalized gambling has been established longer in …

An Examination Of University Student Gambling Practices, Michael Yuan, Susan Yuan, Patricia Janes Dec 2012

An Examination Of University Student Gambling Practices, Michael Yuan, Susan Yuan, Patricia Janes

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

Concerns about student gambling behavior are often based on the popular opinion that students gamble all the time, that students spend too much money gambling, and that students readily become addicted to gambling. The purpose of this study was to examine whether popular opinions related to student gambling are factually based. This was done by examining the relationship among demographics, gambling practices, and views of personal gambling practices of Central Michigan University students. The study results suggest that these popular opinions regarding student gambling may not be factual, or at least may not be as serious as initially perceived.

The Moral Foundations Of Ethical Leadership, Joseph Hester, Don R. Killian Dec 2012

The Moral Foundations Of Ethical Leadership, Joseph Hester, Don R. Killian

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

Hester and Killian stress that principled leadership does not necessarily require discarding past practices; rather, they emphasize the importance of using what is good about the past, eliminating self-interest, and injecting passion into contemporary, valuesbased leadership. Passion, as used by the authors in this sense, refers to neither rage nor anger; rather, it is an excitement and enthusiasm that comes from leading with vision, integrity, and respect for others. Subsequently, when such passion is coupled with moral purpose, the idea of serving others, and building and sustaining relationships, the organization will inevitably experience positive growth — one person at a …

Earning The Right To Lead In Defining Moments: The Act Of Taking Leadership, Tom Karp, Jon-Arild Johannessen

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

True leaders emerge and earn their right to lead — not as a result of an organization’s day-to-day activities — but through courageous acts exhibited during the organization’s defining moments, whether such moments be characterized as stable or disastrous. Remaining strong and steadfast in testy situations while demonstrating the ability to bond to earn the trust of others are the predominant emotional and interpersonal characteristics on display when a leader earns his or her right to lead.

Power, Responsibility & Wisdom: Exploring The Issues At The Core Of Ethical Decision-Making And Leadership, Bruce Lloyd Dec 2012

Power, Responsibility & Wisdom: Exploring The Issues At The Core Of Ethical Decision-Making And Leadership, Bruce Lloyd

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

Decision-making ostensibly requires the exercise of Power. But that use of Power must be counterbalanced with Responsibility in order to make good decisions. Infusing Wisdom into the decision-making process necessarily incorporates an ethical component and involves both the identification and evaluation of relationships. Wise decision-making, therefore, requires the application of Wisdom which transcends simple, short-lived factual proficiency. It is this careful weighing of Wisdom, Power, Knowledge, and Responsibility which must guide our business leaders and be taught to our business students.

Bereavement In Emerging Adulthood: The Influence Of Religion And Type Of Loss, Elizabeth Collison Dec 2012

Bereavement In Emerging Adulthood: The Influence Of Religion And Type Of Loss, Elizabeth Collison

Theses and Dissertations

Bereavement is an important area of research as it may result in grief reactions that lead to serious psychological and health consequences (Stroebe, Schut, & Stroebe, 2007). Positive outcomes, such as personal growth or spiritual well-being, may also transpire post-loss (Hogan & Schmidt, 2002; Paloutzian & Ellison, 1982). Though research on bereavement has grown, few studies have focused on the at-risk group of emerging adults (Hardison, Neimeyer, & Lichstein, 2005; Arnett, 2000). The current study aims to add to the bereavement in emerging adulthood literature through analyzing descriptive data and assessing the impact of type of loss (i.e., nonviolent vs. …

Meg Coherence Imaging In Dyslexia: Activation Of Working Memory Pathways, Alfred Mansour

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The aims of this dissertation are to 1) review the genetic, neurodevelopmental, structural, and functional brain imaging studies that are the foundations of our understanding of dyslexia and 2) investigate the pattern of activation and functional connectivity of neuronal networks critical in working memory in dyslexics by means of magnetoenchephalographic (MEG) coherence imaging. Dyslexics showed an early onset of activation in the precentral gyrus and the superior frontal gyrus, which differed from controls where activation was initiated in posterior cortical regions (supramarginal gyrus and superior temporal gyrus). Further, dyslexics showed lower normalized amplitudes of activation in the right superior temporal …
