Graphic Design + Biomimicry, Margaret Mckosky

Theses

GRAPHIC DESIGN + BIOMIMICRY: Integrating Nature into Modern Design Practices is a thesis that explores how to effectively integrate the methodologies and principles of graphic design and biomimicry. The objective is to create an innovative design process resulting in successful, sustainable and timeless design solutions. This process is meant to remind designers of the benefits nature has to offer in helping us solve many of the problems that society is currently grappling with today. Nature over 3.8 billion years has already used its imaginative prowess to find what works, what is appropriate, and most importantly, what lasts here on Earth. …

A Silicon P-I-N Detector For A Hybrid Cmos Imaging System, Christopher Shea Jan 2012

A Silicon P-I-N Detector For A Hybrid Cmos Imaging System, Christopher Shea

Theses

A fully depleted silicon p-i-n image sensor for a very low noise hybrid CMOS imaging system was simulated, fabricated, and electrically characterized. The image sensor was then bonded to the foundry fabricated CMOS circuitry to create the imaging system. SILVACO Atlas was used to simulate the steady state electrical operation of the device as well as the optical response. Revisions were made to an existing mask set to allow the use of both contact and projection lithography in the fabrication process. Significant process improvements were introduced to eliminate needless complexity and reduce leakage current from the previously reported 1.5x10-6 A/cm2 …

Race Bias In The Diagnosis Of Schizophrenia, Rose M. Fernandez Jan 2012

Race Bias In The Diagnosis Of Schizophrenia, Rose M. Fernandez

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Accuracy of diagnoses appears to be influenced by the client's race. Previous research indicates that African Americans are overdiagnosed with Schizophrenia, whereas findings for Hispanic patients have been inconsistent. However, there is evidence that the diagnostic approach used by the clinician may influence accuracy and that bias may be reduced by using a structured assessment of symptoms prior to assigning a diagnosis. There is also some limited evidence for the role of clinician race in diagnosis, with Caucasian clinicians more likely than non-Caucasian clinicians to diagnose African American patients with Schizophrenia. This study utilized a vignette methodology to examine the …

Spiritual Flow: The Influence Of Religious Experience On Psychological Well-Being, Christian H. Monson Jan 2012

Spiritual Flow: The Influence Of Religious Experience On Psychological Well-Being, Christian H. Monson

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Researchers in thePsychology of religion have attempted to better explain the relationship of religion/spiritual practice and psychological benefits, including the concept of well-being. The use of optimal experiences, or flow theory, has not yet been used in this endeavor. Flow is described as experiences which include meaningful enjoyment, focus, and intrinsic rewards and motivation. Since reports of transcendent, spiritual experiences appear similar to experiences of flow, it is likely that these experiences may overlap in structure. Also, since both religious and flow experiences have been associated with psychological well-being, it is likely that a spiritual flow experience may explain, in …

War Games, Trevor Fruchey Jan 2012

War Games, Trevor Fruchey

Theses

I plan on creating a playful body of work, which will investigate thoughts and memories of the past. Purity, childhood, and innocence will be some of the things that I consider and explore in this body of work. I will try to reawake or evoke memories of the past, but also explore ideas of lost memories and the loss of innocence that everyone goes through as they grow into adulthood. I plan to have a dichotomy of playfulness, youthful innocence, reawakening of youth, versus maturity, loss of innocence and youth, and the desire to revisit ones youth. Through exploration and …

The Impact Of State Energy Programs And Other Contextual Factors On U.S. Buildings Energy Consumption, Andrea N.Y.A. Ofori-Boadu

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

High energy consumption in the United States has been influenced by populations, climates, income and other contextual factors. In the past decades, U.S. energy policies have pursued energy efficiency as a national strategy for reducing U.S. environmental degradation and dependence on foreign oils. The quest for improved energy efficiency has led to the development of energy efficient technologies and programs. The implementation of energy programs in the complex U.S. socio-technical environment is believed to promote the diffusion of energy efficiency technologies. However, opponents doubt the fact that these programs have the capacity to significantly reduce U.S. energy consumption. In order …

The Rebound Effect: The Use Of Short-Term Mating Strategies After The Dissolution Of A Significant, Loving Relationship, Sarah L. Pierce Jan 2012

The Rebound Effect: The Use Of Short-Term Mating Strategies After The Dissolution Of A Significant, Loving Relationship, Sarah L. Pierce

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Previous studies have defined rebound relationships according to retrospective accounts based on the length of engagement, time elapsed since previous relationship, or simply denied their existence in total. The goal of this study is to better understand the concept of the rebound relationship and to determine how pursuing a rebound relationship differs from other types of romantic engagements. The current study poses that rebound relationships reflect a change in mating strategy which is evident in a temporary shift in the characteristics of the pursued mate and the benefits gained. The current paper hypothesized that rebound relationships are intentionally short-lived relationships, …

The present study aimed to address the gap in the current mining research by investigating women’s experiences of working in the mining industry in a “bluecollar” work role and the impact of fly-in fly-out (FIFO) mining on their wellbeing. An Interpretative Phenomenological Approach (IPA) was used as a framework to explore the experiences of 19 female machine operators through in-depth interviewing at one mineral mine site in Queensland, Australia. IPA analysis revealed three themes as identified by the participants. The first theme described how workplace barriers to job progression were salient issues for the women, particularly in respect to discrimination …

Principles For Designing An Effective, Post-Compulsory Music Curriculum Suitable For Western Australia, Andrew T. Sutherland Jan 2012

Principles For Designing An Effective, Post-Compulsory Music Curriculum Suitable For Western Australia, Andrew T. Sutherland

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

A new post-compulsory Music course known as the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) Music course was recently introduced into Year 11 and 12 in Western Australian (WA) schools. Following a convoluted process of creation, its implementation into classrooms has been problematic. Given criticism levelled at its process of creation and implementation, the researcher questions whether the WACE Music course embodies effective, recognised principles to support the effective teaching and learning of music. This study investigates the principles which should form the basis of an effective, post-compulsory music curriculum, suitable for WA. It involved a literature review which sought to …

Metamorphosis, Jin Hee Park

Theses

The purpose of this art is to present women's transformed lives in society through my life experiences. As a woman from South Korea, a country that concretely separates women from men in a traditional way, I have expressed the continuous changes in my life brought about by changes in the society where I belong. I created various forms of cocoons that, like wombs, have protected me from negative effects. I have also presented the variety of transformed women's lives in two types of art, sculpture and jewelry. The main concern for my thesis is to develop line work in the …

A Versatile Group Of Investigative Theater Practitioners: An Examination And Analysis Of "The Civilians", Kimberly Suzanne Peterson

Master's Theses

This thesis analyzes The Civilians, a New York-based theater company that creates interview-based cabaret/theater works, specifically examining the group's organizational structure and creative and administrative processes. The goal of this thesis is to provide insight into how this organization functions, and the lens of organizational structure and processes is used because, as business scholars have noted, structure and process are fundamental elements of any organization. Additionally, this study is framed using Gaétan Morency and Jane Needles's analysis of Cirque du Soleil, François Colbert's analysis of the Piccolo Teatro of Milan, and Celia Wren's article, "Dissolving the Barriers," which investigates eliminating …

The Dynamics Of Democracy Promotion: From Washington To Rabat, Priya Ramachandran Jan 2012

The Dynamics Of Democracy Promotion: From Washington To Rabat, Priya Ramachandran

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

For nearly a decade now, Morocco has stood as a pillar of U.S. democracy promotion in the Middle East and North Africa. This has been a result of a number of factors such as Morocco's historical accessibility to the United States, a young pro-U.S. monarch who is seemingly a reform-enthusiast, and the highly advertised U.S. goal of democratizing Arab nations in the post 9/11 era. However, there have been studies that have focused on particular aspects of U.S. policies toward Morocco and have indicated mixed results. The more critical works suggest that democracy is not a desired goal of U.S. …

Bias In A Just World? Sexual Prejudice, Gender Self-Esteem, And Intimate Partner Violence, Crystal D. Mahoy Jan 2012

Bias In A Just World? Sexual Prejudice, Gender Self-Esteem, And Intimate Partner Violence, Crystal D. Mahoy

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Each year, approximately 835,000 men and 1.3 million women are victims of intimate partner violence (IPV; American Bar Association, n.d). Although the prevalence of same-sex intimate partner violence (IPV) is approximately the same as IPV in heterosexual couples (Alexander, 2002), fewer studies have examined perceptions of IPV in same-sex couples or of IPV perpetrated against heterosexual men compared to heterosexual women. In the current study, Just World Theory (Lerner & Miller, 1978) is used as a framework for understanding factors associated with perceptions of heterosexual and same-sex IPV, including sexual prejudice and gender self-esteem. Perceptions of IPV were examined in …

The Development Of Attentional Skill In A Rapid Serial Visual Presentation Task: Effects Of Extended Practice On The 'Attentional Blink', Greg Simmons Jan 2012

The Development Of Attentional Skill In A Rapid Serial Visual Presentation Task: Effects Of Extended Practice On The 'Attentional Blink', Greg Simmons

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The selection of information through visual attention can be based on the time course of events as well as on the spatial location where information is presented. The attentional blink (AB) phenomenon reflects a limitation in selecting information based on time. This phenomenon is observed with a rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) where the ability to accurately identify a second target (T2) is reduced when it follows 200 – 500 ms after the first target (T1). The goal of this study was to examine whether this deficit in identifying objects in time would be reduced through practice. This question was …

Undergraduate Students' Gender Self-Esteem And Attitudes Towards Transmen, Transwomen, Gay Men, And Lesbian Women, Michael Ann Glotfelter

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Research on individuals who do not conform to traditional sexual norms has increased over the past two decades, but there still remains little research on attitudes towards transpeople (i.e., individuals who violate gender norms). The goal of the current research is to contribute to knowledge regarding attitudes towards transpeople who continue to be subjected to prejudice, violence, and discrimination based on non-conformity. The current research explores and compares gender differences in attitudes towards lesbian women, gay men, transwomen (i.e., male-to-female transsexuals or men who deviate greatly from male gender norms and a male gender identity), and transmen (i.e., female-to-male transsexuals …

Traitorous Texting: Addressing The Methodological Issue Of Arousal In Romantic Jealousy Research, Rachel Rasley Jan 2012

Traitorous Texting: Addressing The Methodological Issue Of Arousal In Romantic Jealousy Research, Rachel Rasley

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Many psychological studies have focused on jealousy in romantic relationships, often from the evolutionary view that men should be more distressed by sexual infidelity and women by emotional infidelity. One criticism of this research is that in studies using physiological methods, arousal is reported as indicating distress, when the arousal is actually ambiguous. The present study investigates the influence of arousal on reported jealousy by manipulating arousal itself. Two groups of participants were overwhelmed with non-sexual arousal (exercise) before completing infidelity manipulations; the other group completed the manipulations without exercising. All participants read cell phone text messages suggesting either emotional …

Fifteen male cross-country runners underwent both a half-mile warm-up run at 65% VO2max followed by either a dynamic stretching protocol or a control protocol. After the protocols, subjects completed a 5-km performance for evaluation of RE and performance. Sit-and-reach scores were recorded both before and after each protocol. RE was measured as the total calories expended during each 5-km and performance time was recorded. There was no significant interaction for …

Von Der Mannigfaltigen Bedeutung Der Reduktion Nach Husserl: Reflexionen Zur Grundbedeutung Des Zentralen Begriffs Der Transzendentalen Phänomenologie, Sebastian Luft Jan 2012

Von Der Mannigfaltigen Bedeutung Der Reduktion Nach Husserl: Reflexionen Zur Grundbedeutung Des Zentralen Begriffs Der Transzendentalen Phänomenologie, Sebastian Luft

Philosophy Faculty Research and Publications

This paper takes a renewed look at Husserl's method of the phenomenological reduction. It interprets "the reduction" as shorthand for the meaning of Husserl's entire phenomenology in its mature stage. In the same way, the method of reduction might have different manners of execution but they are nevertheless guided by a common intent. The text takes its starting point by considering the different metaphors Husserl uses - the "flatland creatures" and the reduction as akin to a religious conversion - and spells out their implications, which lead me to consider their metaphilosophical significance. In this way, this article attempts a …
