The ramifications of Proposition 227, legislation that threatened to eliminate bilingual education passed by California in 1998, sparked a nationwide debate about the validity of education that non-English speaking students were receiving in a bilingual classroom versus that of an English-only classroom. While there was a deluge of arguments regarding the efficiency of English comprehension in the two classroom environments, what many commentators on the issue overlooked was the difference in the retention of the students’ identities.
The Experience Of Progressing From Community Education To Third Level Education From A Learner’S Perspective, Alan Farrell
The Experience Of Progressing From Community Education To Third Level Education From A Learner’S Perspective, Alan Farrell
Students Learning with Communities
This study explored the experiences of community learners as they progressed from community education to third level education. It also examined the reflections of those who had completed their studies and the impact that education had on their lives. It focused on former students, students currently participating in certificate courses, and also students studying on college access programmes. It was hoped to give a broad view of perspectives on the contrast between community learning and third level education. The study attempts to focus on the positive aspects of the experience rather than the barriers which each student faced. Data collection was …
Bullying Policies In Iowa Schools, Terri A. Buettell
Bullying Policies In Iowa Schools, Terri A. Buettell
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
This review examines research on bullying. Bullying is defined, along with the various roles filled by children, including bully, assistant, reinforcer, defender, outsider, or victim. The outcomes for participants and the systems in which they interact are cause for action. Bullying usually occurs in the school setting, making it an appropriate environment for intervention. Components of successful programs are discussed, specifically, the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program, Promoting Alternative Thinking Strategies (PATHS), and Bully Busters, highlighting the successes associated with them and the importance of the teacher's role, along with increasing awareness in the school, organizational strategies, and rewards and consequences …
Literacy, Autism, And Inclusion, Bridgett L. Hodges
Literacy, Autism, And Inclusion, Bridgett L. Hodges
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Young children with significant developmental disabilities can be taught sophisticated literacy skills and many interventions have been shown effective in the research. However, there is a lack of research that looks at the effect of inclusion on literacy with respect to a single student. This study will investigate the influence of an inclusive, general education classroom on the literacy learning of a student with autism. A participant observer approach will be employed in order to collect the following data: in depth interviews and observations of a single individual over a fifteen hour period, and a qualitative case study design will …
Teachers’ Efficacy And Perceived Role In Dropout Prevention, Brent O'Rourke
Teachers’ Efficacy And Perceived Role In Dropout Prevention, Brent O'Rourke
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Researchers have studied potential reasons behind high school dropout for many years. This research has primarily focused on characteristics inherent to the student and has typically labeled them as being the main determinants for why students decide to drop out. Certainly student characteristics are important when looking at dropout, however there are other factors external to the student that may contribute to their leaving school. One such factor would be other individuals that students deal with on a daily basis while at school. Teachers may play a very important role in preventing school dropout. By interacting positively with students, especially …
Disordered Eating Habits And Extreme Weight Loss Techniques In Collegiate Wrestlers: A Qualitative Analysis, Jaime Marie Mayer
Disordered Eating Habits And Extreme Weight Loss Techniques In Collegiate Wrestlers: A Qualitative Analysis, Jaime Marie Mayer
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Eating disorders are a common concern for the general public, especially with adolescent teenagers, however the difficulty with eating disorders is the diagnosis. Eating disorders have been classified into three different types, which can also be broken down further into sub-types. Diagnoses were originally based on clinical observation and were then refined by expert opinion, and the review of research (Grilo, Devlin, Cachelin & Yanovski, 1997). The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM; American Psychological Association, 2000; First, Frances & Pincus, 2002) labels the three types of eating disorders as anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN) and eating …

The Effects Of Interpersonal Violent Imagery Upon Short Term Memory Recall, Stacilyn Chananie-Hill
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
In today's world media are omnipresent. Over the last decade an individual's exposure to media has increased at an exponential rate. Additionally, the levels of violence in media available for public consumption have also increased. A good deal of research has been conducted on media violence, television violence, televised sexual content and amount of television watched by those in their respective studies. Researchers are beginning to understand that exposure to violent media is associated with problematic memory recall. Given that most individuals that live in homes in first world countries are consistently exposed to multiple media sources it is of …

Identitas Tionghoa Muslim Indonesia Pasca-Orde Baru: Melampaui Batas-Batas Kategori Peranakan Dan Totok, Afthonul Afif
Antropologi Indonesia
The dramatic change in some important aspects of this country after the collapse of New Order Regime, primarily in the political aspect, provided larger opportunity to Indonesian Chinese in constructing their real identity, included to the Indonesian Chinese Muslim. In one hand, Indonesian Chinese Muslim tended to re-strengthen their cultural identity shown by articulating some features of their ethnic identity, and they show more the involvement in developing discourse of national building and the life of majority group by using their Islamic identity in the other hand. At this point, they then could not be categorized as ‘peranakan’ and ‘totok’, …

Learning Transfer Of Geospatial Technologies In Secondary Science And Mathematics Core Areas, Curtis P. Nielsen
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The purpose of this study was to investigate the transfer of geospatial technology knowledge and skill presented in a social sciences course context to other core areas of the curriculum. Specifically, this study explored the transfer of geospatial technology knowledge and skill to the STEM-related core areas of science and mathematics among ninth-grade students. Haskell's (2001) research on "levels of transfer" provided the theoretical framework for this study, which sought to demonstrate the experimental group's higher ability to transfer geospatial skills, higher mean assignment scores, higher post-test scores, higher geospatial skill application and deeper levels of transfer application than the …
Best Practices Of Individual Family Service Plans And Analyses Regarding Quality Outcomes, Ashley M. Andrew
Best Practices Of Individual Family Service Plans And Analyses Regarding Quality Outcomes, Ashley M. Andrew
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
This quantitative research study provides information regarding best practices of Individual Family Service Plans (IFSPs). Research on the content, family-centeredness, and outcomes in IFSPs will be discussed. Evidence suggests that although expected content within IFSPs are clearly defined by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), professionals have a lack of consensus on what IFSPs should include, lack family centeredness, and have minimal understanding of a clearly defined outcome according to IDEA. In addition, this study provides additional data regarding quality outcomes. The researcher rated 120 outcomes in IFSPs against a state rubric. Data indicated that although empirical research states …
A Case Study Of One Iowa Female Elementary School Principal's Journey Into Administration, Angela J. Fowler
A Case Study Of One Iowa Female Elementary School Principal's Journey Into Administration, Angela J. Fowler
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The representation of women in educational administration fluctuated throughout history from the 1900s to present day. Presently, women represent over 53% of all elementary school principals in Iowa; but documentation of their specific stories and perspectives is infrequent. I conducted this research with the intent to build upon the qualitative research studies previously completed on educational leadership; specifically lo include an ethnographic account of one female's story in an urban school district.
Through a series of in-depth interviews and participant observations, I gained the perspective of one female elementary school principal in Iowa's experiences into and through the principalship. In …
Asking School Psychologists How Job Satisfaction Can Be Increased, Justin S. Janssen
Asking School Psychologists How Job Satisfaction Can Be Increased, Justin S. Janssen
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
School psychology faces retention issues due to a current and projected shortage of school psychologists and the large number of baby boomers getting ready to retire. Meeting this need becomes vital in order to prevent negative effects of the shortage from continuing. Research has supported a link between job satisfaction and retention in the school psychology research as well as in job satisfaction research in general. Much of the current literature on the job satisfaction of school psychologists, however, focuses only on the identification of correlates with job satisfaction and largely avoids asking practitioners how their job satisfaction can be …

Being In The World : An Existential Inquiry Of Knowing One's Self Through A Personal Project : In The Context Of Dissertation Survival, Tomoe Kitajima
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
This study--a philosophical exploration, partly in an autoethnographical account--provides an empirical demonstration that one's personal project has a strong and positive impact on the dissertation process both for endurance to complete the process and for quality of the product. The concept of project is often explained as one's pursuit of his or her most important philosophical issues. This dissertation originated in the very beginning of my doctoral education in summer 2000 when I first encountered the man behind the coffee shop counter. In his life story he expressed a strong question about the problem of knowledge and authentic living. How …
Psychopathy And Victim-Type Related To Treatment Outcome For Civilly Committed Sexual Offenders, Ashley Helle
Psychopathy And Victim-Type Related To Treatment Outcome For Civilly Committed Sexual Offenders, Ashley Helle
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Previous research on sexual offender treatment has produced mixed results regarding effectiveness and recidivism rates of sexual offenders. The literature shows differences among categories of sexual offenders which suggest extrafamilial adult offenders (rapists) and offenders with both adult and child victims ten to be a bigger threat to society in comparison to familial offenders (incest) and extrafamilial child offenders ( child molesters). Extrafamilial adult offenders and mixed offenders have demonstrated higher levels of psychopathy. Seventy-four civilly committed sexual offenders participated in the current study by completing a psychopathy measure and retrieval of archival data. Fifty-five participants produced valid PPI-R profiles …

The purpose of this paper is to explore how School-Wide Positive Behavior Support (SWPBS) systems can be successful in high school settings. Chapter 1 will establish the need for SWPBS in high schools and Chapter 2 will provide an overview of and evidence supporting SWPBS. Chapter 3 focuses on what is considered best practice in implementing SWPBS. Chapter 4 discusses the characteristics exclusive to high schools that have been identified as potential barriers in implementing SWPBS efforts, and Chapter 5 provides examples of successful high school SWPBS case studies as well as recommendations for overcoming the aforementioned barriers.
Women's Status And Fertility Rates : Results From National Level Data, Jason Thomas Surratt
Women's Status And Fertility Rates : Results From National Level Data, Jason Thomas Surratt
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The rapid increase in human population makes the study of fertility rates an area of imminent concern. Understanding the relationship between women's status and fertility rates is important because providing women with access to adequate health services, educational opportunities, occupational opportunities, and political power will give them greater control over their lives. With increased control over their lives women are more likely to limit the number of children they have to their desired amount as they gain access to the resources to limit child bearing and to find fulfillment in other areas of their lives. This study contributes to the …

Role Strain In Probation And Parole Work And Strategies Used To Reduce Strain, Samantha A. Shoger
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Probation and parole officers play a vital role in the operation of the correctional system. As a part of their role work in community-based corrections, probation and parole officers must act as both a client monitor and treatment counselor to not only assist in client reentry, but also to protect the public. Due to the nature of probation and parole work and the historical changes that have affected their work (i.e. the punitive turn, the New Penology, and the current correctional budgetary constraints), probation and parole officers must cope with a variety of factors in their work that can cause …

Marita Bonner: Creator Of Frye Street And Environs, Laya Jack
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Lorraine Elena Roses and Ruth Elizabeth Randolph, with their publication, Harlem Renaissance And Beyond: Literary Biographies of 100 Black Women Writers 1900-1945, embarked on a mission to bring to the forefront of literary scholarship black women who wrote significant works in the early twentieth century, but who have received little or no recognition. Although their research does not provide a comprehensive account on the lives and works of these women, they offer very pertinent information, which "broaden[s] the fields of scholarly inquiry while opening up the possibility of a revised history and tradition in black, women's and American literature." Their …
The Effects Of Goal-Setting On Performance In An Industrial Painter Training Program, Bradley Gerber
The Effects Of Goal-Setting On Performance In An Industrial Painter Training Program, Bradley Gerber
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
This field study investigated performance in an industrial painter training program for goal-setting, "do your best," and no goal conditions using three measures of performance. Participants were 64 professional, industrial painters. Contrary to expectations, the goal-setting condition did not perform significantly better than the "do your best" condition and no goal condition. Consistency of thickness goals may not have been effective because the tasks associated with the measure were overly complex and the goals may have been too difficult. The proximity to target thickness measure had a ceiling effect, so no support could be found for the measure. Transfer efficiency …
Sociology By Any Other Name: Teaching The Sociological Perspective In Campus Diversity Programs, Meghan Burke, Kira Hudson Banks
Sociology By Any Other Name: Teaching The Sociological Perspective In Campus Diversity Programs, Meghan Burke, Kira Hudson Banks
Scholarship
This article suggests that the way in to sociology may not always be through the front door. The authors demonstrate how students in a three-day campus diversity program develop a sociological imagination despite not having a formal affiliation with the sociology department. In particular, students demonstrate a move from color blindness into racial consciousness and a shift from individual prejudice into institutional privilege when understanding both diversity issues and their own personal biographies. In short, despite not knowing the phrase, they develop a sociological imagination. While the goal is not to diminish the significance of traditional sociology classrooms, the authors …

Purity, Balance And Wellness Among The Swahili Of Lamu, Kenya, Munib Abdulrehman, Rebecca Gearhart
Scholarship
The Swahili of Lamu Island, Kenya, are part of a larger Swahili nation that extends along the East African coast, from northern Mozambique to southern Somalia, and includes archipelagos (Lamu, Zanzibar, Comoros) in the adjacent Indian Ocean. As the Swahili established themselves into an important economic niche as the middlemen of trade between East Africans and visitors from across the Indian Ocean over the centuries, the Swahili language became the primary trade language of East Africa. Since hundreds of African ethnic groups reside in this region, each with a unique native language, speaking Swahili as a first language is both …
Automated Human Screening For Detecting Concealed Knowledge, Nathan W. Twyman
Automated Human Screening For Detecting Concealed Knowledge, Nathan W. Twyman
Business and Information Technology Faculty Research & Creative Works
Screening individuals for concealed knowledge has traditionally been the purview of professional interrogators investigating a crime. But the ability to detect when a person is hiding important information would be of high value to many other fields and functions. This dissertation proposes design principles for and reports on an implementation and empirical evaluation of a non-invasive, automated system for human screening. The screening system design (termed an automated screening kiosk or ASK) is patterned after a standard interviewing method called the Concealed Information Test (CIT), which is built on theories explaining psychophysiological and behavioral effects of human orienting and defensive …

Journalism Education And Children's Rights: New Approaches To Media Development In Cee/Cis Countries, Michael Foley, Noirin Hayes, Brian O'Neill
Articles
This article gives the background to a project entitled Children's Rights and Journalism Practice, which was carried out for UNICEF in university journalism faculties in CEE/CIS countries
By focusing on journalism in the context of the academy and raising awareness of children’s rights from a journalistic perspective, the project seeks to provide a relatively safe space for critical engagement with journalistic ethics and values. Children are targets of, or are implicated in, nearly all aspects of public policy, yet are largely invisible in news-media coverage, and rarely have their voices heard in matters affecting them. By using the UNCRC as …

From Simple Healer To Doctorally Educated Clinician, Lindsey Decampos-Stairiker
University Honors Theses
The profession of physical therapy today is the culmination of various techniques, approaches, and knowledge sources from many different disciplines and philosophies. It is a highly dynamic and progressive field which focuses on incorporating new knowledge and techniques into the established practice: while some aspects can be traced back several millennia, others are the product of evolution and modernization within the field due to discoveries and advances in medical science as well as the needs and demands of the ever changing general population. In order to trace the evolution of the field, this review considered not only the direct progression, …
Men In Black, Martin Munoz
Men In Black, Martin Munoz
Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal
At almost every Catholic university you will undoubtedly find old photographs of a sepia colored world, grainy artifacts steeped in tradition with narratives all but forgotten, like clouds passing in a blue sky. These photographs are but a moment in time, only the instruments that captured these moments may exist, a reminder of how science has permanence in a world ruled by the machine while stories pass on like ghostly figures in an indifferent province. The stories within these photos that once were filled with hope, promise and faith are now silent; only the reverberations of their memory remain.

Appropriating Ignatian Solidarity Through Contact And Concepts, James Menkhaus, Anna Faist
Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal
In the spring 2012 semester, Anna Faist, a senior at John Carroll University in Cleveland, Ohio, participated in an independent study course directed by James Menkhaus. This course, Ignatian Solidarity in Guatemala, connected Anna’s immersion experiences at John Carroll with extensive readings on solidarity, Ignatian spirituality, and social justice. The primary goal of the course was to combine the learning of “concepts” with the experience of “contact” that fosters a sense of solidarity within students. This paper offers a window into some prevalent literature on solidarity, Anna’s reflections on Ignatian solidarity in light of her immersion experiences, and a reflection …

Portraying Migrants’ Experiences in Irish Documentary Film
In this presentation I critically analyse the types of narratives and formal characteristics, as well as the variety of social issues that filmmakers in the Republic of Ireland have engaged in, in creating stories about transnational migration and the immigrant subject in recent Irish documentary film. As a result of the Celtic Tiger economy from the mid-90s until 2008, Ireland has experienced a major transformation in its ethnoscape (Appadurai, 1996) by becoming a ‘country of immigrants’, with an estimated 12% of the population born outside the country. Through the analysis of such documentary …

At the University of Michigan, professors Marshall, Shtein, and Daubmann (2011)have developed a “multidisciplinary hands-on think tank” (p. 1). Their SmartSurfaces course is offered to students majoring in engineering, art, and architecture as part of the university’s Multidisciplinary Learning Team Teaching Initiative (MLTT). The course provides insight into the efficacy of hands-on, Problem-Based Learning (PBL). A follow-up survey conducted by Bierwert, Olds, and Barber (2010) on behalf of the university’s Center for Research on Learningand Teaching (CRLT) revealed high levels of student learning through this course. Students reported developing strong skills related to critical thinking, oral communication, and creative thinking. …
