Teleological Reasoning In Adults: Believing In The Purpose Of Events, Carrie Jeanette Guggenmos
Teleological Reasoning In Adults: Believing In The Purpose Of Events, Carrie Jeanette Guggenmos
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Teleological reasoning reflects the general tendency to view objects, behaviors and events in terms of their “purpose.” Although healthy educated adults tend to refrain from committing errors in teleological reasoning about objects, our knowledge regarding how adults reason about events is limited. It has been suggested that teleological reasoning biases our interpretations of emotionally significant and unexpected life events of which a physical or social cause is absent or unsatisfactory. The current investigation seeks to better understand the types of events that evoke a teleological perspective and the conditions and individual difference factors that facilitate it. The results revealed that …
Armor All: The Self-Conception Of Private Security Contractors, Volker Franke
Armor All: The Self-Conception Of Private Security Contractors, Volker Franke
Peace and Conflict Studies
Whereas the values, attitudes and motivations of soldiers serving in their countries’ armed forces have been widely studied, to date we know very little about the motivations and self-conception of individuals working for the private security industry. Using data obtained through an online survey, this article explores the values, attitudes and identity of more than 200 private security contractors with law enforcement backgrounds and operational experience with a security firm in Iraq. Contrary to media dominating images of ruthless, money-grabbing mercenaries, respondents in this sample adhered to attitudes and values very similar to those of professional soldiers serving in Western …

Do Sensory Ad Appeals Influence Brand Attitude?, Sung-Joon Yoon, Ji Eun Park
Do Sensory Ad Appeals Influence Brand Attitude?, Sung-Joon Yoon, Ji Eun Park
Business Faculty Publications
This article presents two studies that investigate whether or not sensory appeal preferences in advertisements affect brand attitude. Study 1 seeks to discover empirically whether self-referencing and positive affect mediate sensory appeals to influence consumers' attitudes toward a brand, and whether such mediation effects differ across various ad formats. Study 2, a case approach, attempts to derive core sensory concepts through qualitative techniques as applied to an established specialty coffee brand. The results indicate that self-referencing and positive affect both have significant mediating effects between sensory appeal preferences and attitudes toward a coffee brand. Moreover, the finding that sensory preferences …
Good For You, Bad For Us: The Financial Disincentive For Net Demand Reduction, Michael P. Vandenbergh, Jim Rossi
Good For You, Bad For Us: The Financial Disincentive For Net Demand Reduction, Michael P. Vandenbergh, Jim Rossi
Vanderbilt Law Review
Energy policy debates often focus on increasing the supply of renewable energy, but energy demand merits equal attention. Low- carbon energy sources will not be able to displace fossil fuels at the levels necessary to achieve climate goals if global demand continues to grow at projected rates. To meet the widely endorsed goal of 50% global carbon emissions reductions by 2050, including 80% reductions from developed countries, global emissions from fossil fuel use will need to decline by more than seven billion tons from projected levels by 2050. Major new sources of low-carbon energy will become available, but it is …

Personal Environmental Information: The Promise And Perils Of The Emerging Capacity To Identify Individual Environmental Harms, Katrina Fischer Kuh
Personal Environmental Information: The Promise And Perils Of The Emerging Capacity To Identify Individual Environmental Harms, Katrina Fischer Kuh
Vanderbilt Law Review
A variety of modern technologies reveal individual behaviors that have environmental consequences with increasing clarity. Smart meters and related technologies detect detailed information about when and how individuals use electricity within the home. Radio frequency identification ("RFID") chips embedded in recycling collection bins track household recycling behaviors, including everything from whether the household is recycling to whether its members properly separate their recyclables. Regulators use aerial imagery and geographic information systems ("GIS") technology to detect violations of local building codes and the illegal filling of wetlands. Interactive "ecomaps" allow city residents to compare environmental performance by zip code. Even information …
Positive Turning Points For Girls In Mathematics Classrooms: Do They Stand The Test Of Time?, Kathleen Jablon Stoehr, Kathy Carter
Positive Turning Points For Girls In Mathematics Classrooms: Do They Stand The Test Of Time?, Kathleen Jablon Stoehr, Kathy Carter
Teacher Education
The purpose of this study is to examine the equity issue in mathematics from perspectives not traditionally included in equity claims. This study offers a close up view of personal experiences that female preservice teachers have encountered in their own journey as students of mathematics as well as how they make sense of their experiences, especially as they learn to teach. Different themes that arise in this issue of mathematics equity were examined in a study conducted by Stoehr and Carter (2011). This paper extends the previous study by examining and discussing the data-derived theme that centers on girls who …

A Qualitative Study Of Tobacco Dependence Treatment In 19 Us Dental Hygiene Programs., Anne Koerber, Joan M. Davis, Nancy A Newton
Journal Articles
INTRODUCTION: The US Public Health Service calls for health professionals to provide tobacco dependence counseling for patients. The purpose of this study was to understand how dental hygiene programs make decisions about and provide training for tobacco dependence counseling to help them graduate more fully competent hygienists.
METHODS: We conducted interviews (N = 32) with mainly program and clinic directors from 19 US dental hygiene education programs for this qualitative case study. We explored fluoride therapy training and tooth whitening training for comparison. Two analysts summarized the transcripts into a case study for each program.
RESULTS: All programs reported a …

Addressing Reading Underachievement In African American Boys Through A Multi-Contextual Approach, Terry Husband
Addressing Reading Underachievement In African American Boys Through A Multi-Contextual Approach, Terry Husband
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Much has been written about reading disparities between African American males and other student groups. Interestingly, the majority of this scholarship focuses on African American males at pre-adolescent states of development and beyond. To date, relatively little has been documented relative to improving reading outcomes in African American males in early childhood and elementary contexts. The purpose of this article is to present a multi-contextual framework for improving reading outcomes in African American boys in P-5 contexts specifically. I conclude with a discussion of three important commitments that teachers and administrators must be willing to embrace in order for these …

"Homelike" Characteristics Of Maine's Residential Services: A Survey Of Maine's Residential Service Settings (2010), Julie T. Fralich Mba, Eileen Griffin Jd, Catherine Mcguire Bs
Disability & Aging
To better understand the nature of the residential facilities serving more than 19 percent of Maine’s Long Term Services and Supports (LTSS) population, the Maine Department of Health and Human Services commissioned the Muskie School to conduct a survey of residential facilities as part of its update to Maine’s LTSS profile. The goal of the Maine Residential Settings Characteristics Survey, conducted between July and September 2010, was to measure the "homelike" characteristics of residential settings.
The survey sample comprised a total of 636 facilities which included all licensed residential care facilities or private non-medical licensed institutions. The survey response rate …
Signed Language Academic Papers, Risa Shaw, Mary Thumann
Signed Language Academic Papers, Risa Shaw, Mary Thumann
International Journal of Interpreter Education
Signed language academic papers are a new possibility that recent developments in technologies for recording, editing, presenting, and reviewing visual materials have made practical in an academic setting. This article presents guidelines the authors developed for papers specifically in American Sign Language (ASL)interpreting courses; however, signed language academic papers can be effectively used in signed language classes of all levels in any country.
The authors offer rationales for assigning signed language academic papers to bilingual students and suggest style and practical guidelines analogous to guidelines of the American Psychological Association (APA). Recommended guidelines address practical and academic considerations. The recommendations …

Jurisprudence That Necessarily Embodies Moral Judgment: The Eighth Amendment, Catholic Teaching, And Death Penalty Discourse, Kurt M. Denk
Notre Dame Law Review
The article compares the U.S. Jurisprudence with the death penalty teaching of the Catholic Church through a court case of Patrick Kennedy v. Louisiana Supreme Court. It focuses on the Eighth Amendment Jurisprudence and argues on the translated approach of Catholic Church to advance the death penalty discourse. The article also discusses moral judgment embodied by the Eighth Amendment Jurisprudence.

Sitting With Oprah, Dancing With Ellen: Presidents, Daytime Television, And Soft News, José Villalobos
Departmental Papers (PS)
On July 29, 2010, President Barack Obama took to the air on "The View" to talk politics, policy, and family. Pundits billed the visit as the first time a sitting U.S. president appeared in a daytime television program. The telecast drew about 6.7 million viewers, the highest rating ever for the show, and garnered the largest number of women viewers in 17 months. However, whether and to what extent Obama succeeded in getting his message out and endearing himself to female voters remains an open question that merits further scholarly inquiry. In this chapter, I put Obama’s visit to "The …
Network Facilitation And Social Capital, Toran Hansen
Network Facilitation And Social Capital, Toran Hansen
Peace and Conflict Studies
This paper empirically demonstrates that networks of organizations working together can be facilitated by individual network members, even when no facilitators are formally designated by the network members. Regression analyses also revealed statistically significant relationships between the frequency that facilitation functions were facilitated in the inter-organizational network studied and both the level of trust that the network members had for their inter-organizational network and the level of work coordination experienced by the members of the network. These two dependent variables were utilized as indicators of social capital, which was therefore found to be enhanced by inter-organizational network facilitation in this …

Empowering Change: The Effects Of Energy Provision On Individual Aspirations In Slum Communities, Priti Parikh, Sankalp Chaturvedi, Gerard George
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
This paper discusses the role of energy provision in influencing the social aspirations of people living in slums. We examine factors that influence the shift in aspirations in five slum settlements using data from 500 interviews conducted in serviced and non-serviced slums from the state of Gujarat in India. The non-serviced slums did not have access to basic services namely water, sanitation, energy, roads, solid waste and rainwater management. We find empirical evidence which suggests that when basic infrastructure provisions are met, slum dwellers shift their focus from lower order aspirations to the higher order aspirations like health, education, housing …

Hepokoski And Darcy's Haydn, Alexander Ludwig
Hepokoski And Darcy's Haydn, Alexander Ludwig
HAYDN: Online Journal of the Haydn Society of North America
Alexander Ludwig asserts that Hepokoski and Darcy's Elements of Sonata Theory: Norms, Types, and Deformations in the Late Eighteenth-Century Sonata unduly marginalizes Haydn's music by persistently labeling it as witty, humorous or deformational. Ludwig suggests two modifications to this sonata theory that would make it a more historically accurate tool for considering Haydn's music, and by extension a more faithful representation of the body of eighteenth-century instrumental music.

„Zurück Zu Schleiermacher! Und Von Schleiermacher Aus Vorwärts!“ Georg Wobbermin And The Legacy Of Schleiermacher In Weimar Liberal Protestantism, Brent A. R. Hege
Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
As dialectical theology rose to prominence in the years following World War I, the new theologians sought to distance themselves from liberalism in a number of ways, an important one being a rejection of Schleiermacher’s methods and conclusions. In reading the history of Weimar-era theology as it has been written in the twentieth century one would be forgiven for assuming that Schleiermacher found no defenders during this time, as liberal theology quietly faded into the twilight. However, a closer examination of this period reveals a different story. The last generation of liberal theologians consistently appealed to Schleiermacher for support and …
Evaluating The Critical Thinking Skills And Academic Characteristics Of Undergraduate Students At Two Post-Secondary Institutions Utilizing Two Different Curriculum Models, Michael Robert Hepner
Evaluating The Critical Thinking Skills And Academic Characteristics Of Undergraduate Students At Two Post-Secondary Institutions Utilizing Two Different Curriculum Models, Michael Robert Hepner
Dissertations
This mixed methods study compared the critical thinking skills of students at two post-secondary education institutions that utilize two different curriculum models. A contemporary institution that offers a core curriculum and degree specialization (majors) was contrasted with a Great Books school that utilizes a canon of primary sources and relies on Socratic dialogue in the classroom. All students who complete the four-year Great Books program are awarded a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts as opposed to a specialized degree. The two sample populations (N=25) had similar demographic profiles, high school experiences, and college entrance exam scores, as well as similar …

Toward An Isomorphic Diagram Of The Backus-Naur Form., Neil A. Smith
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Computer scientists studying formal languages have made use of a variety of representations to both reason, and communicate their ideas to others. Symbolic representations have proved useful for rigorously defining the theoretical objects of the preceding topics; however, research shows that diagrammatic representations are as fundamental to these subjects. Previous research in this domain has typically been interested in studying the semantics that a particular representation is intended to capture. By contrast, this treatise considers the importance of the format of the representations themselves, and how format influences the ability of a person to uncover characteristics, relevant to the problem …
