Impact Of An Online Homework Program On The Achievement Of College Students Enrolled In First Semester General Chemistry, Brian D. Huesgen

Dissertations

Technology is finding an ever increasing role in university level courses. One area of particular interest is the use of online or computer based homework programs. This study investigated the potential impact of one of the leading commercial chemistry homework management systems on the performance of students in a first semester general chemistry course. Two groups of students were identified, one which used a basic homework program and one which used a Web-based, customizable, problem-grading application that was provided prompt feedback. The 2005 American Chemical Society First Semester General Chemistry Exam as the benchmark of understanding general chemistry. No statistically …

Defining The Developmental Parameters Of Temper Loss In Early Childhood: Implications For Developmental Psychopathology, Heide Hullsiek, Margaret J. Briggs-Gowan

UCHC Articles - Research

Abstract

Background

Temper modulation problems are both a hallmark of early childhood and a common mental health concern. Thus, characterizing specific behavioral manifestations of temper loss along a dimension from normative misbehaviors to clinically significant problems is an important step toward identifying clinical thresholds.

Methods

Parent-reported patterns of temper loss were delineated in a diverse community sample of preschoolers (n = 1,490). A developmentally sensitive questionnaire, the Multidimensional Assessment of Preschool Disruptive Behavior (MAP-DB), was used to assess temper loss in terms of tantrum features and anger regulation. Specific aims were: (a) document the normative distribution of temper loss in …

Presence In Context: Teachers’ Negotiations With The Relational Environment Of School, Vicki Stieha, Miriam Raider-Roth Nov 2012

Presence In Context: Teachers’ Negotiations With The Relational Environment Of School, Vicki Stieha, Miriam Raider-Roth

University Author Recognition Bibliography: 2011 - 2012

This inquiry research builds on the theory of presence in teaching (Rodgers & Raider-Roth, 2006) adding nuanced understandings of how school contexts play into teachers’ abilities to support students’ learning. Findings are drawn from multiple interviews with five veteran middle school teachers, teachers’ written work, and field observations. Illustrating these findings is the compelling story of an exemplary teacher’s negotiations of her practice in response to the school’s relational environment. Our findings point to the teacher’s sense of isolation and vulnerability–indicators of the relational context in the school as a threat to undermining her presence. They also create a compelling …

Different Immersion Temperature's Impact Upon Blood Pressure Of Individuals With Varied Sex And Age, Kasee Hildenbrand, Celestina Barbosa-Leiker, Daniel Melchior

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

Warm water immersion is known to have an effect on human cardiovascular function. This study examines how age (young = 18-30 years and older = 31-65 years) and sex influence changes in blood pressure due to submersion in different water temperatures. Fifty-eight individuals sat immersed to the neck in three different water temperature tanks. Blood pressure measurements (systolic/diastolic blood pressure [SBP/DBP], pulse pressure [PP] and heart rate [HR]) were collected every 6 minutes throughout the duration of the test. We observed significant between-group, within-group, and interaction effects for SBP, DBP, and HR. For PP, significant between-group, within-in group and interaction …

"We Thought It Might Encourage Participation.” Using Lottery Incentives To Improve Libqual+(Tm) Response Rates Among Students, Stefanie Buck, Jennifer E. Nutefall, Laurie M. Bridges Nov 2012

"We Thought It Might Encourage Participation.” Using Lottery Incentives To Improve Libqual+(Tm) Response Rates Among Students, Stefanie Buck, Jennifer E. Nutefall, Laurie M. Bridges

Staff publications, research, and presentations

Libraries deploying the LibQUAL+™ survey can offer a lottery incentive and many do in the hope of increasing response rates. Other libraries may be prohibited from offering one because of Institutional Review Board restrictions, as is the case at [institution name]. We wanted to discover why libraries offer lottery incentives and what kinds and if they believe these incentives have a positive impact on their response rates. The responding libraries hold a general belief that lottery incentives are effective but base this on feeling rather than research. We examine what the literature says about lottery incentives and student populations.

Tuskegee Redux: Evolution Of Legal Mandates For Human Experimentation, Robert S. Levine, Jamila C. Williams, Barbara A. Kilbourne, Paul D. Juarez

Sociology Faculty Research

Human health experiments systematically expose people to conditions beyond the boundaries of medical evidence. Such experiments have included legal-medical collaboration, exemplified in the U.S. by the Public Health Service (PHS) Syphilis Study (Tuskegee). That medical experiment was legal, conforming to segregationist protocols and specific legislative authorization which excluded a selected group of African Americans from any medical protection from syphilis. Subsequent corrective action outlawed unethical medical experiments but did not address other forms of collaboration, including PHS submission to laws which may have placed African American women at increased risk from AIDS and breast cancer. Today, anti-lobbying law makes it …

Have Sexual Abuse And Physicalabuse Declined Since The 1990s?, David Finkelhor, Lisa M. Jones

Crimes Against Children Research Center

This bulletin summarizes statistics on trends for sexual and physical abuse. A decline in sexual abuse since the early 1990s is a conclusion supported by 3 independent sources of agency data and 4 separate large victim surveys. The trend for physical abuse is less clear, since several of the data sources show conflicting patterns.

Jeffrey Dahmer: Psychopathy And Neglect, Tamara Higgs

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

It is the intent of this paper to examine the relationship between Jeffrey Dahmer's Childhood neglect, his fascination with death, and its later influence on his adult psychopathic behavior. After defining the nature of serial killers and the impact of childhood abuse combined with a fascination with death, the focus of this case study will shift to the long term impact of the abuse and neglect suffered by American serial killer, Jeffrey Dahmer. Using the social learning theory, the author will examine how this neglect and abuse tie into his later life as a sexual serial killer. Additionally, the theories …

Examining Multiple Comparison Procedures According To Error Rate, Power Type And False Discovery Rate, Guven Ozkaya, Ilker Ercan

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Examining pairwise differences between means is a common practice of applied researchers, and the selection of an appropriate multiple comparison procedure (MCP) is important for analyzing pairwise comparisons. This study examines the performance of MCPs under the assumption of homogeneity of variances for various numbers of groups with equal and unequal sample sizes via a simulation study. MCPs are compared according to type I error rate, power type and false discovery rate (FDR). Results show that the LSD and Duncan procedures have high error rates and Scheffe’s procedure has low power; no remarkable differences between the other procedures considered were …
