Genetic Markers, Cattle Disposition, And Stress Relative To Variations In Beef Tenderness, James David Magolski

Animal Sciences

The objective of this research was to evaluate the efficacy of genetic markers, disposition, and animal stress on variations in beef tenderness. Warner-Bratzler shear force (WBSF) values on 570 mixed breed heifers and steers were used to determine estimates of genetic selection. Cattle used for this analysis were marketed from 2008 to 2011, and included five different feedlot based research projects at the Carrington Research Extension Center (Carrington, ND). Tissue samples were collected for IGENITY® (Merial Limited, Duluth, GA) analysis. Results included both selection indices and molecular breeding values for hot carcass weight, ribeye area, yield grade, fat thickness, percent …

Growing Up Gay: The Experiences Of Rural Youth In North Dakota And Minnesota, Neil Schloesser

Communication

This study looks at how gay adults experienced their youth in rural North Dakota or Minnesota. The purpose of the study was to discover if gay youth experienced their environment differently from their urban peers and if the internet or television affected their experiences. The study recruited ten participants ages 22-30 for a qualitative study that used thematic analysis as its method. The study found that among the participants the use of gay slurs evolved over time, television and internet did not appear to influence how the participants experienced their environment, and lastly, many of the participants displayed behavior that …

Vigilance Versus Complacency: Communication Strategies Used During Fargo’S Recent Major Floods To Confront Risk Fatigue, Matthew Ignatius Attansey

Communication

This study explored and evaluated the communication strategies used by Fargo city leaders to persuade residents to work together as a community to withstand the repetitive flood hazards that threatened the city on a yearly basis, especially in 1997, 2006, and 2009. The literature review explored vigilance and complacency as well as strategies used by high-reliability organizations (HROs) to manage crises with little or no failures. Difficulties in processing multiple messages, desensitization, and fatigue were identified as barriers to remaining vigilant in the face of multiple crises. The communication strategies applied by the HROs to maintain vigilance were shown to …

Hindutva Movement: Burkean Examination Of Violence As Retributive Justice, Ramya Chandrasekaran Jan 2012

Hindutva Movement: Burkean Examination Of Violence As Retributive Justice, Ramya Chandrasekaran

Communication

The thesis examines the Hindutva movement as a rhetorical text to understand how it contributes to the rhetorical study of social movements. The Hindutva movement is a mass movement that has grown in influence and in number in the last thirty years and its final goal is to wage a battle to create a Hindu rashtra (nation) in India with a monolithic Hindu culture. The rhetorical texts of V.D. Savarkar and M.S. Golwalkar are analyzed with Burkean guiltredemption-purification cycle. These rhetorical tools provide an insight into the guiding question of this thesis: how Savarkar and Golwalkar use rhetoric in ways …

Navigating The Turbulent Dual Roles Of Parent/Coach, Cindy Lee Larson-Casselton Jan 2012

Navigating The Turbulent Dual Roles Of Parent/Coach, Cindy Lee Larson-Casselton

Communication

This study explores the nature of the communication between parent and child as the context changes to place them into the roles of coach and member of the team. Previous studies of parents coaching their own children are limited, suggesting the need for further examination in this area. The parent/coach is becoming far more common in competitive contexts due to the growing number of programs available for children without a corresponding growth in the number of adults able and interested in coaching (Turman & Schrodt, 2004). The study examines and extends role theory, conflict theory, and communication privacy management (CPM) …

A Rhetorical/Interpretive Analysis Of Edward R. Murrow's Criticism Of Broadcast Journalism: Implications For Broadcast Journalism Educators, Aaron Quanbeck Jan 2012

A Rhetorical/Interpretive Analysis Of Edward R. Murrow's Criticism Of Broadcast Journalism: Implications For Broadcast Journalism Educators, Aaron Quanbeck

Communication

Corporate influence has been an ongoing concern for working journalists. Even in the early days of television, Edward R. Murrow saw a bleak future for society if broadcasters succumbed to corporate greed and failed in their responsibility to inform the public. This rhetorical study of Murrow's 1958 speech to the Radio-Television News Directors Association, guided by Perelman's theory of the universal audience and presence, argues that Murrow's speech prioritized broadcast journalism's obligation to a democratic society and warned that commercial intrusion was impacting the profession's moral obligations. At the same time, in appealing to a particular audience, Murrow deemphasized the …

Are You Buying What They're Selling?: Ethnographically Exploring Organizational Identification Through Employees' Everyday Talk, Kai Janovsky Western Jan 2012

Are You Buying What They're Selling?: Ethnographically Exploring Organizational Identification Through Employees' Everyday Talk, Kai Janovsky Western

Communication

The purpose of this study was to explore how employees' reflect organizational identification strategies in their everyday talk at a big-box retailer. Previous studies on organizational identification have mostly been organization-centric, focusing on the strategies organizations employ to induce employee identification. This study fills this gap by exploring the employee side of the identification process. Using ethnographic methods, the researcher conducted complete participant observation and textual analysis to understand how employees reflect, mock, and/or rebel against the organization's identification strategies in their narratives and rites. This study used a three phase approach to gain a deeper understanding of how employees …

All Those Like You: Identity Aggression And Student Speech, Ari Ezra Waldman Jan 2012

All Those Like You: Identity Aggression And Student Speech, Ari Ezra Waldman

Articles & Chapters

Online and face-to-face harassment in schools requires a coordinated response from the school, parents, students, and government. In this Article, I address a particular subset of online and face-to-face harassment, or identity-based harassment. Identity-based aggressors highlight a quality intrinsic to someone’s personhood and demean it, deprive it of value, and use it as a weapon. They attack women, racial minorities, religious minorities, and other traditionally victimized groups. And, as such, they attack not only their particular victims but also their victims’ communities. Identity-based aggressors com- mit a constitutional evil not only because their behavior interferes with victims’ access to education, …

A History Of Professionalism: Julius Henry Cohen And The Professions As A Route To Citizenship, Rebecca Roiphe Jan 2012

A History Of Professionalism: Julius Henry Cohen And The Professions As A Route To Citizenship, Rebecca Roiphe

Articles & Chapters

This paper revives the notion that professionalism and the legal profession can serve as a mechanism for immigrants and those who are not born into wealth or privilege to achieve status. I draw on the example of Cohen, a Jewish lawyer who achieved a great deal of success within the profession in the early 20th Century, to argue that the rhetoric surrounding the professions allows immigrants and others to use professional success to find their way to full inclusion and citizenship. While acknowledging the merits of the critiques of the professions as rent-seeking cartels, I argue that professionalism is an …

Tormented: Antigay Bullying In Schools, Ari Ezra Waldman Jan 2012

Tormented: Antigay Bullying In Schools, Ari Ezra Waldman

Articles & Chapters

This Article begins a theoretical and empirical discussion on bullying and cyberharassment of all students, but particularly gay and lesbian youth. Despite the recent spate of bullying-related suicides, I argue that antibullying proposals that include harsh criminal punishments for egregious cases of bullying and cyberbullying in schools lack validity as a matter of legal theory and practice. In fact, it is what makes criminalization so initially attractive — that is, the public’s emotional and retributive need for punishments equal to bullying tragedies — that ultimately leaves the proposal devoid of reason. Criminalization proposals only satisfy retributive aims and are unlikely …

Money, Well-Being, And Implications For Mental Health, Natalie Ann Miklas Jan 2012

Money, Well-Being, And Implications For Mental Health, Natalie Ann Miklas

Education

Literature has shown there is little or no correlation between money and increased well-being, that monetary pursuits and material possessions are extrinsic goals that can become detrimental to one’s psychological well-being, and materialism may actually lower a person’s well-being as these people have unrealistically high standards in comparison to others. Research has shown that the answer as to what increases one’s well-being lies largely in social relationships and religion. Because many people enter counseling to reduce their psychological distress, mental health practitioners can: (1) assist their clients in identifying when their monetary and/or material pursuits may have morphed into an …

Assessing Minority Students' Perceptions And Attrition At A Predominantly White Institution, Bernadette S.N. Tiapo Jan 2012

Assessing Minority Students' Perceptions And Attrition At A Predominantly White Institution, Bernadette S.N. Tiapo

Education

The enrollment, retention, persistence, and overall college experience of minority students are topical issues in colleges and universities, and even more so in predominantly White institutions (PWIs) where minority students encounter difficulties adjusting to the campus environment (Bennett & Okinaka, 1989; Jay & D'Augelli, 1991). This study employed a mixed method that used institutional data to investigate changes in minority students' attrition patterns, as well as the sensitivity to demographic characteristics, at a PWI that has conducted campus climate (CC) studies and progressively implemented survey recommendations (CCSRs). On-line survey data and information from focus group interviews were also used to …

The Effectiveness Of Parental Involvement In Preschool Education Programs On Parent Perceptions Of Their Child’S School Readiness, Judith Ann Konerza

Education

The purpose of this study was to determine if the Gearing Up for Kindergarten program created a significant impact on parent understanding of children's development and aspects of school readiness. Parent perceptions of their child's readiness to make the transition to school were also assessed. The study also measured the Gearing Up for Kindergarten impact on children's scores on selected academic measures. A selected sample of 75 parents were surveyed with pre, post, and post post program assessments using the Practical Parent Assessment of School Readiness survey. The survey used Likert scale measures to assess parent perceptions of readiness in …

Administrative Evaluation Of Online Faculty In Community Colleges, Douglas Duane Darling Jan 2012

Administrative Evaluation Of Online Faculty In Community Colleges, Douglas Duane Darling

Education

Policy and procedure haven’t kept up with institutional practices at community colleges. With over 5.5 million college students taking online courses, 29% of college students are taking an online course. As student numbers taking online courses have increased, so have the number of faculty teaching online. The purpose of this study is to determine if and how community college, online, faculty are administratively evaluated. The Chief Academic Officer (CAO) of the members of the American Association of Community Colleges were surveyed to determine the factors considered relevant for online, asynchronous, administrative evaluation of faculty that are currently being used by …

Educational Social Software: The Use Of Social Network Sites For Teaching And Learning, Marvin Dale Lenoue Jan 2012

Educational Social Software: The Use Of Social Network Sites For Teaching And Learning, Marvin Dale Lenoue

Education

Although social network sites (SNS) are in use by millions worldwide, the deployment of such sites as tools for teaching and learning is new. Topics related to the ways, means, and outcomes of SNS use in education and training contexts constitute a fresh research area within the field of educational technology. This mixed-methods research project gathered information regarding the use of SNS in education and training settings. Respondents to an Internet survey showed familiarity with a range of social media software, and several had used social network sites including Facebook, Ning, and MySpace in their professional practices. Examining Portfolio-Based Assessment In An Upper-Level Biology Course, Brittany Ziegler Jan 2012

Examining Portfolio-Based Assessment In An Upper-Level Biology Course, Brittany Ziegler

Education

Historically, students have been viewed as empty vessels and passive participants in the learning process but students actually are active forming their own conceptions. One way student learning is impacted is through assessment. Alternative assessment, which contrasts traditional assessment methods, takes into account how students learn by promoting engagement and construction of knowledge. This dissertation explores portfolio-based assessment, a method of alternative assessment, which requires students to compose a purposeful collection of work demonstrating their knowledge in an upper-level biology course. The research objectives include characterizing and contributing to the understanding of portfolio-based assessment in higher education, examining reflection and …

A Study On Retention: Positive Steps For A Small Liberal Arts College, Michael Woodley Jan 2012

A Study On Retention: Positive Steps For A Small Liberal Arts College, Michael Woodley

Education

Retention is a concern for colleges and universities nationwide. The focus of this study is what a small private liberal arts college does well in terms of retaining students by examining the students who left the college for a minimum of one semester and then returned to finish their degree. A survey instrument was used to examine the positive impact the faculty, academic advising, academic program, student services, technology, and the living environment had on the return of reactivated students to Jamestown College (JC). The survey instrument was also used to find out the reasons students attended JC initially, why …

Motivational And Adaptational Factors Of Successful Women Engineers, Susan Edith Bornsen Jan 2012

Motivational And Adaptational Factors Of Successful Women Engineers, Susan Edith Bornsen

Education

It is no surprise that there is a shortage of women engineers. The reasons for the shortage have been researched and discussed in myriad papers, and suggestions for improvement continue to evolve. However, there are few studies that have specifically identified the positive aspects that attract women to engineering and keep them actively engaged in the field. This paper examines how women engineers view their education, their work, and their motivation to remain in the field. A qualitative research design was used to understand the motivation and adaptability factors women use to support their decision to major in engineering and …

Painting Ourselves Into A Corner: The Fundamental Paradoxes Of Modern Warfare In Al Maqaleh V. Gates, Ashley C. Nikkel

Nevada Law Journal

See how few of the cases of the suspension of the habeas corpus law, have been worthy of that suspension. They have been either real treason, wherein the parties might as well have been charged at once, or sham plots, where it was shameful they should ever have been suspected. Yet for the few cases wherein the suspension of the habeas corpus has done real good, that operation is now become habitual and the minds of the nation almost prepared to live under its constant suspension.

Design Of An Audio-Visual Display For Cross-Modal Experimentation, Gail Jeanne Myers Jan 2012

Design Of An Audio-Visual Display For Cross-Modal Experimentation, Gail Jeanne Myers

Electrical and Computer Engineering

The present paper shows the characteristics of a hardware/software display capable of presenting, at different spatial locations, multiple audio-visual stimuli in real-time. The system has been developed to provide a tool in neuroscience in event-related potential (ERP) studies, with presentation delays of less than one millisecond. The high time precision achieved makes it possible to overcome problems from previously used technologies in order to create a realistic environment of cross-modal stimulation. The design presented here has been built using a modular approach, which makes the system flexible and adaptable to different experiments or studies. The capability of presenting different stimuli …

Heteronormative Recovery In The Bell Jar, Gretchen Therese Junglas Jan 2012

Heteronormative Recovery In The Bell Jar, Gretchen Therese Junglas

English

In Sylvia Plath’s novel The Bell Jar, Esther Greenwood struggles to form a true identity. She emulates many women as a way to see how various identities work for her. One of these identities is that of a lesbian. During the novel’s 1953 setting, lesbianism was not a socially acceptable lifestyle. Esther struggles with own internalized homophobia as well as the control of her doctors. She undergoes treatment during her hospitalization that is suggestive of sexual conversion therapy at the time, including the use of electricity as a tool of discipline. Doctors lead her toward an identity that is not …

"Where Everything Goes To Hell": Stephen King As Literary Naturalist, Meghan Joy Perry Jan 2012

"Where Everything Goes To Hell": Stephen King As Literary Naturalist, Meghan Joy Perry

English

In his bestselling nonfiction book about the horror genre, Danse Macabre, author Stephen King lists among his idols "the great naturalist writer Frank Norris" (336). While King primarily writes horror fiction, he has often noted his indebtedness to early American literary naturalists. As these naturalist writers have been such an influence in King's life and writing, it seems logical to explore whether King himself, in addition to being a horror writer, can also be considered a literary naturalist. By looking at ideas of both early and contemporary American literary naturalism, I explore how a variety of King's works utilize the …

"Who Are You And I...?": The Rhetoric Of Identity In The Aloha Eagles Letters, Rebecca Joy Hayes Jan 2012

"Who Are You And I...?": The Rhetoric Of Identity In The Aloha Eagles Letters, Rebecca Joy Hayes

English

In 1969, four years before the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision, Aloha Eagles, a Republican legislator in the North Dakota House of Representatives, proposed a House Bill 319 to legalize abortion in North Dakota. Throughout the legislative session, Eagles corresponded with many North Dakotans regarding the bill. This study asks how Eagles and her correspondents construct identities, such as mother, citizen, or medical professional, to support or oppose abortion. Using rhetorical and archival research methods to examine rhetorics of identity in 78 pairs of letters between Eagles and her correspondents, the study reveals that writers construct marital, professional, parental, …
