A Phenomenological Study Of Military Veterans With Combat Trauma Enrolled In Post-Secondary Education: Transition, Academic Performance, And Perceptions Of Support, Maya Rocke

Master's Theses and Capstones

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to explore the academic experience of student veterans who reported cognitive and psychological symptoms following their military service.

Design: Phenomenology, based on a conceptual model of self-regulated learning (SRL).

Participants: Six student veterans enrolled at a large public university who self-reported symptoms consistent with TBI/PTSD, or who were involved in combat operations, or who had an improvised explosive device (IED) detonate nearby.

Results: Despite often having service-related trauma symptoms, the participants did not report a strong connection between those symptoms and their academic performance. However, participants reported challenges with social interactions, low overall …

A New Model Of Procedural Justice: Legal Legitimacy, Legal Cynicism, And Satisfaction With Government Officials, Lindsey R. Phelan Jan 2012

A New Model Of Procedural Justice: Legal Legitimacy, Legal Cynicism, And Satisfaction With Government Officials, Lindsey R. Phelan

Master's Theses and Capstones

The alternative model of legal socialization proposes that legal legitimacy and legal cynicism mediate the relation between procedural justice and rule-violating behavior (Triter, 2012). In contrast, the direct model of procedural justice proposes that procedural justice predicts satisfaction with government (Tyler, 1988). The current study tested these models using secondary analysis of data collected in Eastern and Western Europe during the 1990s. The present study tested two competing hypotheses: legitimacy and cynicism would mediate the relation between procedural justice and satisfaction with government officials (alternative model) and procedural justice would predict satisfaction (direct model). Results indicated that procedural justice predicted …

Onabotulinumtoxin A In The Treatment Of Migraine Headache, Carrie O. Dougherty, Md, Stephen Silberstein, Md Jan 2012

Onabotulinumtoxin A In The Treatment Of Migraine Headache, Carrie O. Dougherty, Md, Stephen Silberstein, Md

Department of Jefferson Headache Center Papers and Presentations

Recent trials have demonstrated that onabotulinumtoxinA is a safe and effective treatment for the prevention of chronic migraine headaches. Although the exact effect of the toxin on the pathophysiology of migraine is not clear, several in-vivo and in-vitro models have shown that onabotulinumtoxinA inhibits the release of neurotransmitters and neuropeptides involved in pain signaling pathways with resulting attenuation of both peripheral and central sensitization in migraine. Limited systemic adverse effects and physician administered treatments that eliminate concerns for patient compliance have made onabotulinumtoxin A an appealing alternative to oral prophylactic medications for migraine. This article is designed to provide an …

Moderation And Mediation Of An Effective Hiv Risk-Reduction Intervention For South African Adolescents, Ann O'Leary, John B. Jemmott, Loretta S. Jemmott, Zolani Ngwane Jan 2012

Moderation And Mediation Of An Effective Hiv Risk-Reduction Intervention For South African Adolescents, Ann O'Leary, John B. Jemmott, Loretta S. Jemmott, Zolani Ngwane

Anthropology Faculty Scholarship

Let Us Protect Our Future" is a sexual risk-reduction intervention for sixth-grade adolescents in South Africa. Tested in a cluster-randomized controlled trial, the intervention significantly reduced self-reported intercourse and unprotected intercourse during a 12-month follow-up period. The present analyses were conducted to identify moderators of the intervention's efficacy as well as, which theory-based variables mediated the intervention's effects. Intervention efficacy over the 3-, 6-, and 12-month follow-up was tested using generalized estimating equation models. Living with their father in the home, parental strictness, and religiosity moderated the efficacy of the intervention in reducing unprotected intercourse. Self-efficacy to avoid risky situations …

High-Frequency Trading And The Flash Crash: Structural Weaknesses In The Securities Markets And Proposed Regulatory Responses, Ian Poirier Jan 2012

High-Frequency Trading And The Flash Crash: Structural Weaknesses In The Securities Markets And Proposed Regulatory Responses, Ian Poirier

UC Law Business Journal

This note will illuminate the relatively unknown highfrequency trading industry. First, it will examine the state of the industry, in context with the flash crash of May 6, 2010 when a single trader in Kansas City sent the U.S. securities markets into a tailspin. Next, it will explain why the hodgepodge of regulations struggling to control this industry is entirely inadequate to prevent another crash. Finally, the authors suggest a better solution-relatively noninvasive controls that could be put in place to prevent future flash crashes and restore investor confidence.

The Creation And Destruction Of Price Cartels: An Evolutionary Theory, William Bradford Jan 2012

The Creation And Destruction Of Price Cartels: An Evolutionary Theory, William Bradford

UC Law Business Journal

Why are gas stations able to charge price premiums above competitive price and how are companies arrive at identical supracompetitive price? The article describes the causes and effects of supracompetitive pricing, explains the inability of antitrust law to suppress some instances of supracompetitive pricing, establishes the importance of trust between firms as a necessary condition for supracompetitive pricing, and illustrates how the strategic exchange of information is crucial to the creation and destruction of trust and thus to the evolution and devolution of price cartels. The author develops a "positive theory" that explains and predicts the evolution and devolution of …

What’S Good In Theory May Be Flawed In Practice: Potential Legal Consequences Of Poor Implementation Of A Theoretical Sample, A. Lynn Phillips, G. Michael Phillips, Melanie Stallings Williams

UC Law Business Journal

This article discusses the problems with the use of statistical sampling in litigation. Sample-based research is increasingly used in a diverse array of cases including products liability, antitrust, intellectual property, and criminal law. Sample-based research provides objective evidence upon which decisions, damages, and liability may rest. Despite its importance, however, statistical evidence is often misused and misunderstood by attorneys unfamiliar with the underlying form of analysis. This article explores common errors when using litigative samples, comments upon best practices for the use in law of sample-based research, and demonstrates the importance of sound statistical sampling and data collection in a …

The ability to train and share updated information on leadership with our community and education leaders are a missing component of most leadership programs. The interaction and communication between institutions of higher education, K-12 education, and the business worlds tend to be an area of constant struggle. The Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis Department (ELPA) at East Tennessee State University are stepping out to serve the leaders of their region with an annual Leadership Symposium. The Doctoral Fellows and other ELPA students have been hosting this symposium for two years and through continued research and growth want to create a …
