Iron Molybdenum Cofactor: Catalyst In Dihydrogen Production And Nifen's Role In The Femo-Co Biosynthetic Pathway, Deborah Bolin Maxwell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Humankind’s tremendous industrial and technological progress over the last two centuries has been driven by the natural abundance and availability of fossil fuels. As those reserves deplete, the prudent course of action would be to develop other readily available fuel sources. Some research efforts using biomolecules involve the hydrogenases and nitrogenases with the goal of evolving dihydrogen. At the nitrogenase active site, the iron-molybdenum cofactor (FeMo-co) catalyzes the reduction of dinitrogen and protons to form ammonia and dihydrogen. Toward the goal of producing dihydrogen passively as an alternative fuel, a novel advanced material has been developed. CdSe nanoparticles complexed with …
Postcranial Osteometric Assessment Of Korean Ancestry, Elizabeth Carol Okrutny
Postcranial Osteometric Assessment Of Korean Ancestry, Elizabeth Carol Okrutny
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The determination of ancestry is an important part of an individual's identification when creating a biological profile. This thesis scrutinizes postcranial variation using over 65 osteometric sorting measurements in an attempt to identify those measurements that display the most significant differences among Koreans, Africans, and Europeans. Data was collected from four American skeletal collections and one South Korean skeletal collection for a total sample population of 306 individuals: 24 of Korean ancestry, 66 of African ancestry, and 216 of European ancestry. In an effort to minimize the number of measurements needed for ancestral assessment, stepwise discriminant analysis was performed for …

What Is A Healthy Community?, Denise Tanata Ashby, Jennifer Pharr
What Is A Healthy Community?, Denise Tanata Ashby, Jennifer Pharr
Lincy Institute Reports and Briefs
The health of a community is dependent not only upon the genetics of its residents, but also upon the environment within which those individuals live. A person’s health is a product of their environment. As such, a healthy community is one in which all residents have access to a quality education, safe and healthy homes, adequate employment, transportation, physical activity, and nutrition, in addition to quality health care. Unhealthy communities lead to chronic disease, such as cancers, diabetes, and heart disease. The health of our communities is critical to the growth and development of our region. To build healthy communities …

Emory International Law Review
At the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China, Brazilian swimmer César Cielo Filho ('Cielo') lunged into the wall first in fifty-meter freestyle, finishing in 21.30 seconds, an Olympic-record time. In victory, Cielo thrust his fists into the air and repeatedly slammed them into the water, splashing with wild gesticulations. A half-minute later, he became more subdued and slid back into the water, hugging the lane line as tears welled in his eyes. After years of training and unwavering commitment to the sport of swimming, he had finally become the fastest swimmer in the world and an Olympic gold medalist. Three …

No Need To Break New Ground: A Response To The Supreme Court’S Threat To Overhaul The Commercial Speech Doctrine, Jennifer L. Pomeranz
No Need To Break New Ground: A Response To The Supreme Court’S Threat To Overhaul The Commercial Speech Doctrine, Jennifer L. Pomeranz
Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review
Commercial speech and core speech are fundamentally different, and the basis for their current First Amendment protections reflects this understanding. The purpose for protecting each type of speech is unique, and the ability of the government to compel or restrict such speech differs. Two distinct analytical frameworks and two different tiers of protection have emerged.
The U.S. Supreme Court has afforded protection against unwarranted restriction of commercial speech by applying intermediate scrutiny under the test that it established in Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corp. v. Public Service Commission. On the other hand, the Court has subjected regulations of …
The Perfect Food For Perfect Health And Pleasure?, Cem Ekmekçi̇oğlu
The Perfect Food For Perfect Health And Pleasure?, Cem Ekmekçi̇oğlu
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
How perfect a food or meal is depends on hedonic and nutritional factors. The hedonic component is influenced by all of our 5 senses. In addition, social, environmental, and cognitive/experiential factors may have an effect on our attitude towards a food. On the other hand, nutrient composition and content, as well as bioavailability, determine how nutritionally perfect a food is. So, does the perfect food exist? What makes a food or a meal perfect? This paper will try to answer these questions by briefly discussing the most important variables.

To investigate the role of the oxidative stress status of drivers involved in traffic accidents as a risk factor. Materials and methods: Twenty-six drivers and 28 passengers involved in traffic accidents and 31 healthy control drivers and 30 healthy control pedestrians were enrolled in the present study. The total antioxidant status (TAS) and total oxidant status (TOS) were measured in blood samples. Results: The mean value of the TOS level in drivers involved in traffic accidents was significantly higher than that of the control pedestrians (P =< 0.05). The mean value of the TAS level in passengers involved in traffic accidents was significantly lower than that of the control drivers and pedestrians (P =< 0.001 and P =< 0.01, respectively). Conclusion: This is the first study assessing the oxidative markers of individuals involved in a traffic accident compared with a control group. The results reveal that involvement in a traffic accident has an effect on oxidative markers. However, further studies are required in order to use the oxidative stress status of drivers involved in traffic accidents as a marker for estimating the accident risk.

Investigation Of Serum Paraoxonase-1 Activity And Lipid Levels In Patients With Hyperthyroidism, Gülden Başkol, Kiymet Dolbun Seçki̇n, Fahri̇ Bayram, Fati̇h Tanriverdi̇
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
The present study was designed to investigate the relationship among the serum paraoxonase-1 (PON-1) activity, lipid levels, and thyroid hormone status in patients with hyperthyroidism. Materials and methods: The study group comprised 30 patients with primary hyperthyroidism and 18 normal healthy controls who were matched for age and sex. Serum PON-1 activity was determined by spectrophotometric methods. Results: Serum PON-1 activity was found to be lower in patients compared to controls (P < 0.05). Free triiodothyronine (T3) and free thyroxine (T4) levels were significantly higher in the patient group compared to the control group (P < 0.001 and P < 0.001 respectively). Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and total cholesterol values were found to be lower in patients than in the controls (P < 0.001 and P < 0.001 respectively). Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels were found to be decreased in patients compared to controls (P < 0.005). Triglyceride and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels were not significantly different between the 2 groups (P > 0.05). Serum PON-1 activity was found to be negatively correlated with free T4 levels (r = -0.324, P < 0.05) and positively correlated with total cholesterol (r = 0.330, P < 0.05) and TSH levels (r = 0.577, P < 0.001). Conclusion: Our PON-1 results show that there is decreased antioxidant defense in patients with hyperthyroidism. Therefore, we think that effective antioxidant therapy to increase PON-1 activity may be a therapeutic option in patients with hyperthyroidism.

Throughout history the success of economies around the world has in large part been influenced by technological growth and innovations. Along with such growth and innovations came higher living standards and an improved quality of life for citizens residing and participating in those economies. However, not all countries were able to grow and develop at the same rate, resulting in considerable differences in economic welfare across populations. As nations around the world address the 21st century, economic growth and prosperity for some nations will depend upon how well their citizens are equipped and motivated to seek new technological discoveries and …
