Effects Of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Inoculation On Biochemical Parameters In Capsicum Annuum Grown Under Long Term Salt Stress, Fazi̇let Özlem Çeki̇ç, Serpi̇l Ünyayar, İbrahi̇m Ortaş
Turkish Journal of Botany
Salt stress is an important environmental stress. Plants cope with salt stress with different strategies. In this study the effects of 2 different arbuscular mycorrhiza species (Glomus mosseae and G. intraradices) on some biochemical parameters in pepper plants (Capsicum annuum L. cv. Cumaovası) exposed to long term salt stress were studied. It was found that mycorrhizal inoculation increased RWC, P, total chlorophyll, and carotenoid content of pepper plants during salt application. The enzyme activities changed depending on the enzyme and salt stress application. The lowest MDA content was found in the plants inoculated with G. intraradices; however, there was no …

An Example For Comparison Of Storage Methods Of Macrofungus Cultures: Schizophyllum Commune, Ayşe Betül Karaduman, Burcu Atli, Mustafa Yamaç
Turkish Journal of Botany
Twelve different methods were compared for storage of a newly isolated mushroom strain, Schizophyllum commune Fr. The fungal strain was stored in different media [sterile distilled water (SDW), glycerol (15%) or media including trehalose], in different forms (mycelium-colonised wheat seeds, mycelium-colonised agar plugs) and at different temperatures (+4, +20, -20 °C). The fungal culture was checked periodically for its viability and biological activity for up to 1 year. The mycelial recovery ratio, mycelial growth rate, mycelial biomass weight, and enzyme activity of the recovered cultures were used for comparison of the different methods. After 12 months' storage, the vitality of …

Drought stress is one of the most important yield-reducing factors in crop production. Sunflower, an oilseed crop, is severely affected by abiotic stress. In this study, 2 sunflower cultivars (Musala and Aydın) were evaluated in terms of various biochemical and physiological responses under 2 different polyethylene glycol-mediated drought stress conditions. Stress-determining parameters such as malondialdehyde (MDA), hydrogen peroxide (H_{2}O_{2}), and proline contents were determined. Both cultivars showed similar responses at osmotic potentials of both -0.4 and -0.8 MPa. Aydın was less affected than Musala under these stress conditions. MDA, H_{2}O_{2}, and proline levels were similar at both -0.4 and -0.8 …

Influence Of Mycorrhizal Strategy On The Foliar Traits Of The Plants On The Tibetan Plateau In Response To Precipitation And Temperature, Zhaoyong Shi, Yanying Liu, Fayuan Wang, Yinglong Chen
Turkish Journal of Botany
Mycorrhizas play key roles in important ecosystem processes and functions. To enhance our understanding of the impact of mycorrhizal strategies on important foliar traits of host plants and their response to climate changes, we analysed 6 selected foliar traits among 54 plant species in 129 sampling sites of ascertained mycorrhizal types on the Tibetan Plateau based on their functional groups. The selected traits were leaf mass per area (LMA), nitrogen concentration (on mass and area bases, N_{mass} and N_{area}, respectively), photosynthetic capacity (A_{mass} and A_{area}) and photosynthetic nitrogen use efficiency (PNUE). The analysed foliar traits showed no significant difference between …
Plowing In Hope: A Three-Part Framework For Incorporating Restorative Justice Into Sentencing And Correctional Systems, Lynn S. Branham
Plowing In Hope: A Three-Part Framework For Incorporating Restorative Justice Into Sentencing And Correctional Systems, Lynn S. Branham
All Faculty Scholarship
This essay proposes the adoption of a three-part framework to effectuate fundamental changes in conventional sentencing and correctional constructs, making restorative justice a mainstay of sentencing and correctional systems. First, federal, state, and local governments would authorize the imposition of what would be – in name, purpose, and content – “restorative sentences.” The growing, processing, and distribution of locally grown foods in low-income neighborhoods particularly afflicted by crime is an example of what could become a prevalent restorative sentence. The essay outlines a number of steps to be undertaken by jurisdictions in order to realize the goals of restorative sentencing. …
Chrysaora Quinquecirrha Polyps In Barnegat Bay, Nj, Monica Katherine Buesser
Chrysaora Quinquecirrha Polyps In Barnegat Bay, Nj, Monica Katherine Buesser
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Sea nettles (Chrysaora quinquecirrha) have become abundant in the estuaries of the Mid- Atlantic States. Their ample numbers are an indicator of a disturbed ecosystem. Various factors have been attributed to the rise in numbers of sea nettles including eutrophication, overfishing, global warming, construction and species introduction. Bamegat Bay is a highly eutrophic system with excess nitrogen and organic carbon arriving in the bay via runoff and watershed waste inputs. Many commercial fisheries in Bamegat Bay have ceased to exist and the remaining fisheries are dwindling. An overabundance of medusae and polyps will further impact fisheries since jellyfish compete with …

The Effects Of The Built Environment On Physical Activity In Rural Upstate New York, Kimberly Moore
The Effects Of The Built Environment On Physical Activity In Rural Upstate New York, Kimberly Moore
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Background: Physical activity across the lifespan is associated with numerous health benefits. That the built environment can influence physical activity is a widely accepted hypothesis which has been examined extensively in urban/suburban and across urban-rural environments. Numerous census variables, such as housing density, percent renter, and others related to urbanity, are related to physical activity and built environment measures. However, the rural built environment's influence on adult physical activity is relatively unexplored.

Spaces Of Healing : Clinical Effects On Indigenous Cosmology In The Ecuadorian Amazon, Fotini Constantina Spero
Spaces Of Healing : Clinical Effects On Indigenous Cosmology In The Ecuadorian Amazon, Fotini Constantina Spero
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
In this paper I hope to explain the levels of power at play between the Ecuadorian State and the indigenous of the Amazon. The indigenous in Ecuador, not only in the Amazon, though that is where my work takes place, attempt to maintain their separate identities from the Ecuadorian State. The main way they do this that I will be focusing on in this paper is their utilization of witchcraft and healing practices. These practices help to maintain the relationship between the indigenous and their land. These mechanisms clash with the state agenda of remaking autonomous indigenous people into state …
The Burden Of Hepatitis C Virus In New York State, Rachel Hart Malloy
The Burden Of Hepatitis C Virus In New York State, Rachel Hart Malloy
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is estimated to be the most common chronic blood-borne infection in the United States (US). Annual incidence of HCV in the US peaked in the late 1980's, declined steadily through the 1990's and has plateaued since 2003 with approximately 18,000 new cases in 2008. The morbidity and mortality associated with HCV is expected to rise until at least 2015. Due to the high rate of asymptomatic cases, inherent limitations with target screening recommendations, limitations with screening technologies and scarce resources for surveillance nationwide, quantification of the burden is difficult. US estimates of disease burden have …

Anthropometric Correlates Of Reproductive Success, Facial Configuration, Risk Taking And Sexual Behaviors Among Indigenous And Western Populations : The Role Of Hand-Grip Strength And Wrist Width, Jeremy Andrew Atkinson
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Correlating a sexually dimorphic trait with reproductive success (RS) remains the `gold standard' in evolutionary psychology research. Within each sex, if more dimorphic individuals have increased RS then this is strong evidence that the trait is an important phenotypic fitness marker and potentially used as a same-sex and/or mate-assessment criterion. Many studies have investigated some of these traits, like shoulder to hip ratio (SHR) in males and waist to hip ratio (WHR) in females and have found that a more sex-typical body configuration does indeed indicate higher phenotypic quality and is used in mate assessment. However these traits are aggregate …

Trace Element Analysis Of Environmental And Clinical Materials Using Novel Instrumentation Based On X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometry : New Capabilities For Public Health Laboratories, Kathryn G. Mcintosh
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometry is a well-established analytical technique for determining the elemental content of many different materials. XRF has long been used for public health applications, particularly for identifying lead-based paint hazards. The primary advantage of XRF over other atomic spectrometric techniques is that it is nondestructive. In addition, little sample preparation is required, so results are obtained rapidly and at low cost. The principal aim of this study was to characterize the utility and reliability of current XRF instrumentation for use in the environmental health sciences. Interest in the use of XRF for detecting lead in children's toys …

Pay It Forward : The Effect Of Social Support On Crime, Jessica Singer
Pay It Forward : The Effect Of Social Support On Crime, Jessica Singer
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The purpose of this research is to explore the relationship between social support and crime. In 1994, Frank Cullen wrote an innovative article which was designed to construct social support as an organizing principle for criminology. Using this work to frame this research, I hypothesize that social support will be negatively related to crime. I explore this relationship on two levels of analysis. First, I investigate the relationship between state-level support and crime rates using a dataset that I constructed from a variety of sources. Second, I investigate the relationship between individual-level support and crime and deviance using data from …
Migration And The Well-Being Of Left-Behind Children In China, Lin Guo
Migration And The Well-Being Of Left-Behind Children In China, Lin Guo
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The rise of the floating population in China has greatly stimulated researchers' interest in studying the trends and characteristics of internal migrants, as well as their roles in China's economic transformations. Recent estimation from the Bi-Census data of 2005 suggests as many as 58 million children (under age 18) are left-behind in migrant-sending regions while their parents are away working. The absence of these migrant parents from the home may bring both short- and long-term consequences for their left-behind children. This dissertation aims to provide a systematic examination of the impact of parental migration on the well-being of rural left-behind …

Body Size And Mortality In Post-Medieval England, Gail Margaret Hughes-Morey
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Short stature and body mass at both extremes of the distribution have consistently been linked to poor health outcomes in modern populations, but the nature of the relationship between body size and mortality is poorly understood. This dissertation examines the relationship between stature, body mass, and mortality, and how that relationship may have varied with socioeconomic status and evidence of morbidity in post-medieval England. Adults from Chelsea Old Church, an 18th-19th century high status skeletal collection from the outskirts of London, and Lower Saint Bride's, an 18th-19th century low status skeletal collection from central London, both housed at the Museum …

Sirtuin 6 : A Review Of Biological Affects And Potential Therapeutic Properties, Jade Beauharnois
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
ABSTRACT: Sirtuins, possessing either histone deacetylase or mono-ribosyltransferase activity, regulate important biological pathways in bacteria, archaea and eukaryotes. The term Sir2 comes from the yeast 'silent mating-type information regulation 2' gene, a gene directing cellular regulation in yeast. Sirtuins have been implicated in aging, regulation of transcription, apoptosis and stress resistance, in addition to energy efficiency and metabolism. In mammals, a variety of sirtuin family members are genetically encoded to include sirtuins 1-7 (SIRT1-SIRT7). SIRT6 is a human sirtuin of interest in a variety of research areas, influencing the genomic instability, metabolic defects and degenerative pathologies associated with aging. Until …
"Rumors Which Became His Reputation" : Christopher Marlowe's Afterlife In Fiction And Biography, Kaitlin Albertson
"Rumors Which Became His Reputation" : Christopher Marlowe's Afterlife In Fiction And Biography, Kaitlin Albertson
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Reconstructing the lives of historical literary figures when we possess only a few disconnected pieces of evidence proves to be a challenge for biographers and historical fiction writers alike. I examine the life of Christopher Marlowe as it is presented in a number of biographies and historical fictions and identify different approaches to the Marlowe narrative and the various arguments in favor of and against these (re-)constructions. Marlowe's life with its various gaps and mysterious aspects offers a case study of the reconstruction of literary lives. Fiction writers necessarily blur the line between fact and fiction, but biographers engage in …
Occupational Exposure And Risk Of Skin Cancer In A Multinational European Study, Simona Surdu
Occupational Exposure And Risk Of Skin Cancer In A Multinational European Study, Simona Surdu
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Non-melanoma skin cancers (NMSC) comprise more than one third of all cancers, and are increasing worldwide. The most common NMSC are Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) and Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC). Studies on humans and animals suggest that sunlight and arsenic play important roles in the pathogenesis of these skin malignancies. However, the number of epidemiological studies focusing on NMSC in workers exposed to ultraviolet (UV) radiation or airborne arsenic is limited, and the findings are contradictory.

The Impact Of The Welfare Reforms Of 1996 On Migration, Participation And Residential Choice, Samrat Bose
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act (PRWORA) of 1996 gives states wide latitude to institute eligibility rules for welfare payment, set welfare payment amounts and decide on the income threshold that trigger welfare payments under the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program. Do recipients shop around for the best deal by migrating to a state with higher benefits and liberal eligibility rules in the post-welfare reform era? Does the migration behavior of single mothers support the lifecycle hypothesis? Do states with higher welfare payments and easier eligibility rules have increased participation rates for their migrant population compared …
Teacher Reflective Function And Its Connection To Observed Teacher-Child Interactions In Head Start Classrooms, Katharine Emerson-Hoss
Teacher Reflective Function And Its Connection To Observed Teacher-Child Interactions In Head Start Classrooms, Katharine Emerson-Hoss
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The primary purpose of this study was to identify reflective function in Head Start teachers. Reflective function (RF) is a measure of a cognitive-emotional capacity that has been measured through interviews with parents and is linked to the parent's ability to create physical and psychological safety for his/her child (Slade, 2005). This study is the first to apply this measure to teacher interviews. Secondly, this study investigated whether a teacher's RF was related to their interactions with children as measured by the Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS, Pianta, La Paro, & Hamre, 2008). This qualitative multiple case study investigated archival …
