Paediatrics and Child Health, East Africa

Background: International collaborators face challenges in the design and implementation of ethical biomedical research. Evaluating community understanding of research and processes like informed consent may enable researchers to better protect research participants in a particular setting; however, there exist few studies examining community perspectives in health research, particularly in resource-limited settings, or strategies for engaging the community in research processes. Our goal was to inform ethical research practice in a biomedical research setting in western Kenya and similar resource-limited settings.

Methods: We sought to use mabaraza, traditional East African community assemblies, in a qualitative study to understand community perspectives on …

A Computational Study Of The Vibrational Behavior Of Fluid-Filled Spherical Thin Shells, Sami Abdul-Wahid Jan 2012

A Computational Study Of The Vibrational Behavior Of Fluid-Filled Spherical Thin Shells, Sami Abdul-Wahid

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Three-dimensional finite-element modeling of the resonance behavior of thin spherical shells is done with the COMSOL multi-physics software package and comparisons are made with experimental data and theoretical predictions. Computational models of the sell in vacuo, and with water inside, are tested. Results in vacuo show a 1% agreement in the very thin shell (h/R=1/250, for thickness h and radius R). Three experimentally measured resonance frequencies below 8500 Hz of the water filled shell are predicted computationally to within 25 Hz. Other spectral similarities and discrepancies are discussed qualitatively. The data suggests that the COMSOL …

Delirium. A Comprehensive Review, Hussein A. Algahtani, Abduljaleel P. Abdu

Neurosciences

Delirium is among the most common potentially preventable neurological disorders encountered in diverse patient populations, especially in critical care units and the elderly. It may present with highly variable clinical features, prolong hospital stay, and herald a poor prognosis. It is also a source of distress for patients and their caregivers. A high degree of clinical suspicion is required for detecting delirium and a detailed history, physical examination, and targeted investigations are necessary to determine the underlying etiology and ensure proper management. The following article is a comprehensive review outlining the various aspects of delirium.

Good Men Grow Corn: Embodied Ecological Heritage In A Belizean Mopan Community, Kristina Baines

Publications and Research

Recent developments in land rights and land use in the Toledo district, Belize has generated anthropological and activist interest surrounding traditional ecological knowledge and practice, and the role of heritage in communities. This study explores the connection between ecological knowledge and practices, and the concurrent construction of heritage, and community health and wellness, broadly defined. Developing and using the concept of “embodied ecological heritage,” this dissertation takes a phenomenological approach to understanding the convergence of ecological heritage and health in multiple realms of everyday life, arguing that lived experience of participating in “traditional”practices is fundamentally connected to wellness in the …

The Use Of Space At The Late Woodland Shady Grove Site (22-Qu-525), Stephen George Harris

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Very little previous work has been done at the Late Woodland Shady Grove site. This thesis will examine and reconfirm some of the previous conclusions about this site's placement within the temporal framework of the Northern Yazoo Basin. The Late Woodland and Mississippian occupations of the site used the same space in decidedly different ways. How the use of space has changed through time will be examined from several different perspectives, including geophysical survey and the intra-site distribution of artifacts.

The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Psychological Maltreatment (PM) and Neglect subscales of the Computer Assisted Maltreatment Inventory (CAMI; DiLillo et al., 2010). The CAMI is a retrospective self-report measure that assesses multiple forms of child maltreatment (i.e., sexual, physical, psychological, neglect, exposure to interparental violence) retrospectively from adults. The CAMI’s PM and Neglect subscales were administered to a geo-graphically diverse sample of 400 college students and a sample of 412 newlyweds. Exploratory fac-tor analyses were conducted for each group separately by subscale. Represented in the PM factor structures were items that …

Intestinal, Airway, And Cardiovascular Relaxant Activities Of Thymoquinone, Muhammad Nabeel Ghayur, Anwar Hussain Gilani, Luke Jeffrey Janssen Jan 2012

Intestinal, Airway, And Cardiovascular Relaxant Activities Of Thymoquinone, Muhammad Nabeel Ghayur, Anwar Hussain Gilani, Luke Jeffrey Janssen

Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences

Thymoquinone (TQ) is a bioactive component found in many medicinal herbs. In this study, we report the smooth and cardiac muscle relaxant activities of this compound. TQ concentration dependently suppressed spontaneously contracting rabbit jejunum while also relaxed high K+-(80 mM) induced contractions in jejunum and guinea-pig ileum, indicating activity at voltage-operated Ca++ channels (VOCC). Further, TQ displaced Ca++ concentration-response curves, obtained in a Ca++-free environment, to the right, showing blockade of VOCC. Similar activity was observed with verapamil, a standard VOCC blocker. TQ also exhibited nonadrenergic relaxation of agonist-induced contractions in guinea-pig trachea. When tested in fluo-4-loaded mouse lung slices, …

Community Perspectives On Research Consent Involving Vulnerable Children In Western Kenya, Rachel Vreeman, Eunice Kamaara, Allan Kamanda, David Ayuku, Winstone Nyandiko, Lukoye Atwoli, Samuel Ayaya, Peter Gisore, Michael Scanlon, Paula Braitstein Jan 2012

Community Perspectives On Research Consent Involving Vulnerable Children In Western Kenya, Rachel Vreeman, Eunice Kamaara, Allan Kamanda, David Ayuku, Winstone Nyandiko, Lukoye Atwoli, Samuel Ayaya, Peter Gisore, Michael Scanlon, Paula Braitstein

Paediatrics and Child Health, East Africa

Involving vulnerable pediatric populations in international research requires culturally appropriate ethical protections. We sought to use mabaraza, traditional East African community assemblies, to understand how a community in western Kenya viewed participation of children in health research and informed consent and assent processes. Results from 108 participants revealed generally positive attitudes towards involving vulnerable children in research, largely because they assumed children would directly benefit. Consent from parents or guardians was understood as necessary for participation while gaining child assent was not. They felt other caregivers, community leaders, and even community assemblies could participate in the consent process. Community members believed …

Cellular Plasticity In White Adipose Tissue: In Vivo Identification Of Bipotent Adipocyte Progenitors In Adult White Adipose Tissue, Yun-Hee Lee Jan 2012

Cellular Plasticity In White Adipose Tissue: In Vivo Identification Of Bipotent Adipocyte Progenitors In Adult White Adipose Tissue, Yun-Hee Lee

Wayne State University Dissertations

Nutritional and pharmacological stimuli can dramatically alter the cellular composition and phenotype of white adipose tissue (WAT). Nonetheless, the identity of progenitors that contribute to this cellular plasticity in vivo remains poorly understood. Utilizing genetic lineage tracing techniques in combination with in situ imunohistochemical analysis, we demonstrate that brown adipocytes (BA) that are induced by beta3-adrenergic receptor activation (ADRB3) in WAT arise from the proliferation and differentiation of cells that express platelet-derived growth factor receptor alpha (PDGFRA), CD34 and Sca1 (PDGFRA+ cells). PDGFRA+ cells have a unique morphology in which extended processes contact multiple cells in the tissue microenvironment. Surprisingly, …
