Effect Of Temperature And Relative Humidity On The Development And Fecundity Of Chilo Partellus (Swinhoe) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), A. Tamiru, E. Getu, B. Jembere, T. Bruce

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The spotted stemborer, Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), is one of the most important insect pests attacking maize and sorghum in Ethiopia. Recent studies have indicated that the pest is spreading to new locations where it was not reported before. In the current study, laboratory investigations were carried out to determine the combined effect of different levels of relative humidity and temperature regimes on the development and fecundity of C. partellus, as these physical factors are known to play an important role in the life cycle of insects and adaptability to local climate. Developmental time, longevity, potential fecundity and realized …

Stem Cell Research: A Bibliometric Analysis From 1999-2008, A. Thirumagal

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Stem cell research is a vital area of study. It is of interest to scientists in India and all countries [1]. Bibliometrics is a truly interdisciplinary research field. Bibliometrics comprises mathematics, social science, natural sciences, engineering, and life sciences. Bibliometric studies such as a work on the research productivity in ophthalmic and vision research used both the number of publications and qualitative measures of journals.[2] This article is a bibliometric study of a part of the literature on stem cell research.

Bibliometrics

The terms bibliometrics and scientometrics were introduced by Pritchard and by Nalimov and Mulchenko in 1969. Pritchard explained …

Information Needs Of Rural Women: A Study Of Three Villages Of Bangladesh, Arman Hossain, Shariful Islam

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The information society is where everyone can create, access, utilize and share information and knowledge, enabling individuals, communities and peoples to achieve their full potential in promoting their sustainable development and improving their quality of life (Olorunda, 2004). The main objective of information society is to empower all the people through access to and use of information, but there is concern that some people, including women, are more distant than others from the opportunities presented by the changes being created by ICTs.

Women's education and empowerment have been important social, economic, and political issues in the developing countries like Bangladesh …

Efnep Reaches Refugee Youth Using A Mobile Van, Linda S. Gossett Feb 2012

Efnep Reaches Refugee Youth Using A Mobile Van, Linda S. Gossett

Journal of Extension

New groups of refugees settled in apartments far from city services. Their children lacked access to organized after-school activities and the opportunity to practice English. The Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) wanted to reach and teach the young refugees but lacked the staff and budget to do so. This article discusses how the EFNEP formed a partnership with a city parks and recreation department to reach refugee youth while providing organized activities and nutrition education. Educators should learn: what new groups live in their county, where they live, what schools their children attend, and other agencies assisting them.

Soy Protein-Poly (L-Lactic Acid) Blend Nanofibers For Drug Delivery Of Nardostachys Jatamansi, Swetha Tiwari

Theses

Electrospun nanofibers when nanofi bers are impregnated with drugs play a significant role in drug delivery. Nanomedical approaches to drug delivery focus on developing nanoscale particles or molecules to improve the bioavailab ility of a drug.

Biodegradable nanofibers were developed using Poly (L – lactic acid) and Soy protein for the delivery of an ayurvedic drug, Nardostachys jatamansi. A weighed quantity of powdered drug – Nardostachys Jatamansi was subjected to Soxhlet extraction using water and ethanol in equal quantities. Various blends of the drug extract and soy protein solution are prepared and mixed in Poly (L-lactic acid). Nanofibers of …

Methods For Modifying Stem Cell Characteristics, Kiminobu Sugaya, Angel Alvarez Jan 2012

Methods For Modifying Stem Cell Characteristics, Kiminobu Sugaya, Angel Alvarez

UCF Patents

We propose a method of expanding stem cells and dedifferentiating cells by cultruing cells with cell cultrue extracts of embryonic stem cellas and or extracts from a regenerating limb. We demonstrated that co cultureing human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells with sections of a lizard tail or mouse embryonic stem cells increases the stemness of the Msc. This allows for the creation of a cell cultruing system containing expgenous factors that facilitate increased expression of stem cells genes and dedifferentiation.

Mechanisms Of Fetal Programming In Hypertension., John E. Jones, Julie A. Jurgens, Sarah A. Evans, Riley C. Ennis, Van Anthony Villar, Pedro A. Jose

Pediatrics Faculty Publications

Events that occur in the early fetal environment have been linked to long-term health and lifespan consequences in the adult. Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), which may occur as a result of nutrient insufficiency, exposure to hormones, or disruptions in placental structure or function, may induce the fetus to alter its developmental program in order to adapt to the new conditions. IUGR may result in a decrease in the expression of genes that are responsible for nephrogenesis as nutrients are rerouted to the development of more essential organs. Fetal survival under these conditions often results in low birth weight and a …
