Justin's Story is part of Pediatric End-of-Life Case Studies, one of seven teaching modules drawn from the Emmy Award-winning documentary, A Lion in the House. A Lion in the House portrays an unprecedented, intimate look at the realities of childhood cancer through the journeys of five families and their professional caregivers over the course of 6 years. Justin's Story provides a forum for open-ended discussion and consideration of compassionate approaches for navigating pediatric end-of-life. It offers content that is unpredictable and not always best practice. Learners reflect on the complex impact of childhood cancer on Justin, his family, and …

Looking To Do More. Evaluating The Process Of Researching And Proposing A Location Change To A Local Food Pantry, Allison Wilde

As development workers, we often are on the outside looking in. We may have counterparts that are open to the work that we are doing, the suggestions that we may have, but often they are resistant to change. This can be a result of many things including a fear of losing power or a threat to their role as an expert in their area of expertise. I believe both of these played a role in my RPP project. I worked with a group of people who were interested in improving services available at our local food pantry, Norwalk Area Food …

Delivering Preventive Health Care Information To More Versus Less Health-Oriented Consumers: A Comparative Demographic Analysis, Joseph D. Cangelosi, Edward Ranelli, David Kim
Atlantic Marketing Journal
Preventive health care (PHC) is the awareness and efforts a person undertakes to enhance and preserve physical, mental, and emotional health for today and future. Although PHC information is widely available, people are not utilizing the information to improve their health. We examine PHC information sources utilized by persons who are more health-oriented vs. less health-oriented. The less health-oriented individuals were identified as: low educational attainment, low income, men, younger age, unmarried, and non-White. A factor analysis produced three primary sources of PHC information sources: print, institutional, and electronic and audio-visual delivery systems. An ANOVA compared how more health-oriented individuals …

Managing Livestock Using Animal Behavior: Mixed Species Stocking And Flerds, D. M. Anderson, Ed L. Frederickson, R. E. Estell
Agriculture Faculty and Staff Scholarship
Mixed-species stocking can foster sound landscape management while offering economic and ecological advantages compared with mono-species stocking. Producers contemplating a mixed-species enterprise should reflect on several considerations before implementing this animal management strategy. Factors applicable to a particular producer's landscape must be considered together with goals and economic constraints before implementing mixed-species stocking. A major consideration when using mixed-species stocking is how to deal with predation losses, especially among small ruminants. An approach being adopted in some commercial operations capitalizes on using innate animal behaviors to form cohesive groups of two or more livestock species that consistently remain together under …

This brief is about obesity rates among OEF/OIF veterans and how race, education level, gender, and use of the VA play a role in obesity rates. For practice and policy, a fitness education program should be implemented by the VA to help lower obesity rates since obesity can cause more serious health problems. Suggestions for future research include expanding the study to involve veterans from other military eras and expanding the study to look at more risks associated with obesity.

Standards And Related Intellectual Property Issues For Climate Change Technology, Jorge Contreras
Standards And Related Intellectual Property Issues For Climate Change Technology, Jorge Contreras
Working Papers
Almost every product sold today must conform to standards, whether relating to its design, manufacture, operation, testing, safety, sale or disposal, and sometimes to many of these at once. At their root, standards are no more than written requirements or design features of a product, service or other activity. They can be breathtakingly detailed or disarmingly general, ranging from thousands of pages in length to just a few sentences. Standards are set by a wide range of bodies, from governmental agencies to industry consortia to multinational treaty organizations. Some standards are adopted into local, state or federal legislation and attain …

Co-Created Tools For Teaching; Learning And Designing Services In Colombia: Facilitating Interdisciplinary Learning In Service Design Innovation, Natalia Agudelo, Angélica Flechas, Lina Antolínez
ServDes Conference Series
This paper resumes an on-going research project that is developing and prototyping an improvement on the learning experience for students in design innovation. For this project the key components of the Innovation Workshop's learning experience have been considered; evaluated and adjusted. Among these elements are the tools that have been adapted to facilitate the design and learning process of multidisciplinary teams; composed by designers and non-designers; which work collaboratively through a semester-long project with a company brief. This paper presents and describes three tools from successful student's experiences; why they have been chosen; and how they have been adapted to …

Service Walkthroughs To Support Service Development, Johan Blomkvist, Johan Åberg, Stefan Holmlid
ServDes Conference Series
Service design is said to be a holistic design approach. This is evident in most service design literature and textbooks but still services are prototyped by focusing on separate parts rather than whole service journeys. In this paper we propose a technique called service walkthrough that can be used to represent whole services. We explore what information can be generated using the technique and how useful it is. We found that the technique helped identify the flow of information; problematic areas; and design opportunities. The prototype was generally well received by the participants. In addition to learning about information; the …
