The Use Of Filamentous Fungi To Convert Solid Waste Into Consumable Products, Alex Zapata, Elizabeth Phillippi, Blair Mitchell, Jacob Yablonowski, Jonathan Schoer, Michael Watters
Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)
Here we report on the use of Neurospora to reduce human solid waste while converting it into fungal biomass which has the potential to be used as a dietary supplement. Typically portrayed as an environmental hazard and source of undesirable odor, solid waste represents an untapped resource. Filamentous fungi are natural decomposers with the ability to use this resource and reduce its environmental impact. We examined fungal growth and composition to determine the conditions which maximize the rate of conversion of waste into fungal biomass. We compared the effect of the length of incubation, method of aeration, available surface area, …

The Impact Of Foam Rollers As A Form Of Active Recovery On Lactate Disappearance, Dannie Dolan
Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)
After anaerobic exercise, rate of blood lactate disappearance is often monitored as a way to detect the achievement of muscle recovery. In this study, the rate of blood lactate disappearance will be examined for two methods of muscle recovery, with a focus on the effectiveness of foam rollers. After performing a strenuous anaerobic task, the participants will either conduct a passive recovery or one of the two active recoveries, the passive recovery used as the control method. Active recovery through moderate exercise post-strenuous exercise has been shown to be very effective in lactate removal, but use of foam rollers has …
Fitness Tax Credits: Costs, Benefits, And Viability, Daniel M. Reach
Fitness Tax Credits: Costs, Benefits, And Viability, Daniel M. Reach
Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy
As the number of overweight and obese Americans rises, it becomes increasingly clear that Americans need further incentives to stimulate lasting lifestyle changes. Tax incentives focused on exercise, which have been largely unexplored to this point, are an effective response to the growing obesity problem in the United States that would largely avoid the political opposition that tax policies focused on diet have encountered. In addition, they would also provide a more palatable solution for the taxpayer beneficiaries with a relatively low impact on government revenues. Viable tax incentives to encourage greater fitness include tax credits and sales tax breaks, …

Beyond Bailouts: Federal Tools For Preventing State Budget Crises, Brian D. Galle, Kirk J. Stark
Indiana Law Journal
More than two years after the official end of the Great Recession, state governments still face significant budget deficits that cannot be addressed without further drastic spending cuts or substantial revenue increases. The structural origins of the ongoing state fiscal crisis are well known. Excessively procyclical revenue structures, combined with spending obligations that increase with economic downturns, have resulted in a budget dynamic for the states that is not sustainable over the long term. The consensus solution to this problem is for states to save money during boom times (via budget stabilization or “rainy day” funds) and to draw on …

Kinesiology Faculty Publications and Presentations
To determine intensity of Nintendo Wii Fit games using indirect calorimetry. Twenty-five college students completed Wii Fit activity sessions at two difficulty levels within aerobics, strength, and yoga categories. Resting metabolic rate and exercise VO2 were measured and metabolic equivalents (METs) were calculated. Measured METs and calculated METs ranged from 2.30 ± .42 and 2.44 ± .38 for Yoga to 5.73 ± 1.36 and 6.04 ± 1.09 for aerobics, respectively. All selected Wii Fit activity intensities were significantly higher than resting, p < .001; aerobic and strength activities met the moderate intensity threshold (3 METs, p < .001), yoga activities did not (p < .005); aerobic and yoga activities of medium difficulty were more intense than the corresponding easy-rated activities (p < .005). There were no statistical differences between measured and calculated METs. Wii Fit has potential as an effective tool for helping college-age individuals increase their PA.

The Effects Of Dependent Infants On The Social Behavior Of Mantled Howler Monkeys (Alouatta Palliate), Keziah Katz
The Effects Of Dependent Infants On The Social Behavior Of Mantled Howler Monkeys (Alouatta Palliate), Keziah Katz
Honors Theses and Capstones
Six weeks of observation on eight groups of wild mantled howler monkeys revealed that the presence of a dependent infant alters the frequency of social interactions between a female with an infant and other adult monkeys. Males preferred to spend time with females without infants but still spent more time with females with infants than with males. Females without infants spent significantly less time with females with infants than with males or other females without infants and females with infants decreased their frequency of social interaction overall without preference for males, females or other females with infants.

Utilization Of Corn Residue, Winter Range, Or Dry Lot In Beef Heifer Development Systems, Stetson P. Weber
Department of Animal Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Post-weaning heifer development systems that maximize reproductive efficiency and reduce input costs associated with feed is beneficial for cow/calf producers. Two research experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of post-weaning development systems in beef heifers. In Exp. 1 heifers were developed on corn residue (CR), or dry lot (DL). Heifers developed in DL had increased BW after winter treatment until breeding. Both heifer groups were similar in percent of heifers cycling, AI conception, AI pregnancy, and final pregnancy diagnosis. A subset of AI pregnant heifers were blocked by weight and stratified by winter development system and individually fed using …
Effects Of Feeding Insect-Protected Corn And Corn Residue To Cattle, And Evaluation Of Distillers’ Grains Storage When Mixed With Crop Residue On Cattle Performance, Barry Weber
Department of Animal Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Research has been conducted on genetically modified corn fed to livestock since the introduction of insect resistant hybrids. While the overwhelming conclusion of these trials demonstrate nutritional equivalency to corn from non-transgenic hybrids, the introduction of new transgenes and combinations of resistance traits necessitates continued evaluation of genetically modified corn hybrids. Expansion of the ethanol industry has resulted in the increased availability of co-products for use as a livestock feed, as well as an increase in crop residues that offer unique opportunities for use by cattle producers. A finishing trial was conducted with corn and corn silage from MON 89034, …

In America, credit cards on campus have been a disaster, leaving students buried in debt before graduation, often with little hope of paying off the debt before high fees and interest double the amount. This research details a multi-campus survey of current American college students and their use of credit cards. In the current project, we surveyed business students across five campuses in the United States (n=725) in fall, 2009. We found significant differences between students on their knowledge of credit cards and several demographic factors. We conclude by discussing the implications for further research in this area.

A Review Of The Benefit Of Pre-Operative Education Prior To Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting, Patrick C. Jahn
Theses and Dissertations
Coronary Artery Bypass Graft surgery is the most common type of heart surgery performed each year in the United States (U.S. Department of HHS, 2010). If your healthcare provider were to tell you that you needed heart surgery what would be the first thing to come to mind, would it be fear, pain, anxiety, denial? Do you have any idea what this procedure entails or what to expect before, during, or after your hospitalization?
Preparation is most often a prerequisite for success. Multiple research studies have shown that proper patient preparation can lead to better patient outcomes, including pain and …
The Effects Of Tribal Governments On Reservation Poverty Rates, Heather Raisch
The Effects Of Tribal Governments On Reservation Poverty Rates, Heather Raisch
Political Science Theses and Capstones
Poverty rates on Indian reservations are far higher than the national average. Since Tribal Governments have at least some control over these reservations, to what extent are they to blame for these higher than average poverty rates? I look at each reservation and their type of government, constitution, policies and demographics to analyze the causes of their poverty as it relates to tribal government. There are many other pieces of research that are similar to this, but none looking specifically at the overall effects the government has on its community. My hypothesis is that communities with higher poverty rates tend …
