Energetic Plasticity Underlies A Variable Response To Ocean Acidification In The Pteropod, Limacina Helicina Antarctica, Brad A. Seibel, Amy E. Maas, Heidi M. Dierssen
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Ocean acidification, caused by elevated seawater carbon dioxide levels, may have a deleterious impact on energetic processes in animals. Here we show that high PCO2 can suppress metabolism, measured as oxygen consumption, in the pteropod, L. helicina forma antarctica, by ~20%. The rates measured at 180–380 µatm (MO2 = 1.25 M−0.25, p = 0.007) were significantly higher (ANCOVA, p = 0.004) than those measured at elevated target CO2 levels in 2007 (789–1000 µatm, = 0.78 M−0.32, p = 0.0008; Fig. 1). However, we further demonstrate metabolic plasticity in response to regional …

Situated at the northwest end of Santa Cruz County and occupying circa 30 square miles of sharply contrasted terrain, the Scott Creek Watershed concentrates within its geomorphological boundaries, at least 10-12% of California's flora, both native and introduced. Paradoxically, the use/abuse that the watershed has sustained over the past 140+ years, has not necessarily diminished the biodiversity and perhaps parallels the naturally disruptive but biologically energizing processes (fire, flooding, landslides and erosion), which have also been historically documented for the area for +60 years. This is an early edition of an extensive document by James A. West. Please visit the …
Prevalence Of Childhood Obesity In Elementary Schools In Lincoln, Nebraska: A Study Of Children On Free Or Reduced Lunches, Eric Barth
Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses
The purpose of the project is to show that there is a direct relationship between childhood obesity and socioeconomic status. Other factors that go into this relationship include: physical activity and foods available in vending machines. My ultimate objective is to prove that children coming from low socioeconomic backgrounds are showing higher levels of obesity during childhood. I believe that this work, as well as other studies similar to this, can be used show that these children need more help and assistance. Many of these children are not taught proper eating habits; generally because cheaper foods are generally not nutrition …

Migration Distance And Sexual Dichromatism: Cost Of Migration Is Correlated With Reduced Female Coloration In Wood Warblers, Richard K. Simpson
Migration Distance And Sexual Dichromatism: Cost Of Migration Is Correlated With Reduced Female Coloration In Wood Warblers, Richard K. Simpson
Biology Honors Theses
Avian sexual dichromatism has been observed to be greater at higher latitudes, and one of the long-standing explanations for the underlying evolutionary forces underlying this geographic pattern is the breeding latitude hypothesis, which focuses on changes in male ornamentation and posits that sexual selection for male ornamentation is stronger at higher latitudes. I offer an alterative hypothesis that focuses on how changes in female coloration can drive the evolution of sexual dichromatism. I propose that the costs of migration, including increased predation risk and high energetic costs, negatively select against elaborate plumage coloration, and that the distance a species migrates …
Influence Of The Home Environment On Preschoolers’ Dietary Intake In Middle Class Families Enrolled In A Preschool Program In Metropolitan Seattle, Jessica M. Macintyre
Influence Of The Home Environment On Preschoolers’ Dietary Intake In Middle Class Families Enrolled In A Preschool Program In Metropolitan Seattle, Jessica M. Macintyre
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Background: Obesity in the United States has become a major health issue, affecting not only adults, but children as well. The increase among preschool children is of major concern, with 2 out of 10 children in 2008 being overweight or obese. It is important to start obesity prevention at a young age in order to avoid the development of obesity and its detrimental health conditions. Children begin to develop eating habits at a young age, and the home eating environment may have an influence on the development of eating habits.
Purpose: To assess the influence of both a positive and …

“My First Patient” And Other Pharmacy Service-Learning Projects, Laurel Andrews
Academic Summit
The University of Louisiana at Monroe College of Pharmacy has incorporated a longitudinal service-learning program throughout the didactic portion of the curriculum. Every semester, each class is assigned a service-learning project beginning in the fall semester of the P1 year with the "My First Patient" project. This project entails students becoming their own first patients, completing medical histories and a behavior change and action plan assignment as well as writing a reflective essay. Our students participate in many more service-learning projects during their time in the College of Pharmacy, examples of which will be discussed.

In 2010, through a federal grant, a mobile dental hygiene unit was purchased with two goals in mind: providing care to citizens in rural parishes of Louisiana while providing community clinical experience to dental hygiene students. Provision of these services on the MDHU is helping to address affordability and accessibility to dental care. Underserved children and adults receive clinical and educational services creating oral health awareness for the entire family. The ULM’s Dental Hygiene Mobile Unit provides dental hygiene students with an irreplaceable and unique educational setting while providing needed services to the underserved residents in the region.

Pediatric Partnerships: Health Promotion Through Service-Learning, Tanya Sims
Academic Summit
Service-learning is an integral component of the Child Health Maintenance course at Louisiana Tech University. Nursing students engage the pediatric population in a variety of community settings to improve health through service-learning education. Topics such as prematurity awareness, shaken baby syndrome, hand washing and illness prevention, hygiene issues, nutrition, dental care and adolescent health needs are addressed. The opportunity to connect with children in the community meets the objective of health promotion and illness prevention for the role of the registered nurse and provides an opportunity for students to participate in a rewarding civic engagement project.

Mixed Methods Analysis Of School Wellness Programs In Nebraska And Indiana: A Descriptive Study, Jessica A. Robinson
Mixed Methods Analysis Of School Wellness Programs In Nebraska And Indiana: A Descriptive Study, Jessica A. Robinson
Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Schools have become one of the major fronts that the battle against childhood obesity is being fought. In 2004 the Child Nutrition Act passed by Congress required all school districts receiving funds for the National School Lunch Program to create a wellness policy. Since then there have been many research projects conducted to learn more about these policies, and their implementation as programs in the schools. Thus far, no such research has been done in Nebraska or Indiana. The purpose of this descriptive study is to describe how schools in Nebraska and Indiana are implementing wellness programs in their schools. …

The Portrayal Of Older People In Marketing Materials For Senior Centers, Jason Robert Gillespie
The Portrayal Of Older People In Marketing Materials For Senior Centers, Jason Robert Gillespie
Theses and Dissertations
This content analysis examined 128 senior center brochures and newsletters to determine how older people (those 65 years and older) were portrayed. Findings indicated that portrayals of older people in this medium that targets older people and their caretakers exclusively were overwhelmingly positive. Older people were portrayed favorably in terms of health status, personality descriptors related to level of happiness, interaction with others, mental state, as well as body image and overall evaluation. In several other categories such as energy level and activity level they were portrayed neutrally, and not a single category was dominated by negative portrayals. In fact, …

Nutrient Mass Balance And Performance Of Feedlot Cattle Fed Barley Based Diets In Large Pens In Western Canada, Erin M. Hussey
Nutrient Mass Balance And Performance Of Feedlot Cattle Fed Barley Based Diets In Large Pens In Western Canada, Erin M. Hussey
Department of Animal Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Three separate large pen commercial feeding trials with approximately 9,000 heifers with either eight or ten reps/treatment were conducted at a Western Feedlots Ltd.- High River, a commercial feedyard near High River, AB, Canada. For all three experiments, Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) was used to segregate feed barley. In Exp. 1, barley was segregated based on digestible energy (DE) content as predicted by NIRS and heifers were fed low or high DE barley, or a 50:50 blend of the two. Feeding low DE barley improved weight gain, dry matter intake (DMI), and mortality; with little effect on carcass composition compared …
Three Dimensional In Vitro Model Of Head And Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma, Anna Bulysheva
Three Dimensional In Vitro Model Of Head And Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma, Anna Bulysheva
Theses and Dissertations
Head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCC) are among the leading causes of cancer related deaths throughout the world. The survival rate for this type of cancer is extremely low and has not changed significantly in recent decades. There is an imperative need to study tumor progression in a representative model in order to generate more knowledge about this disease as well as develop more effective treatment options. Multiple methods already exist for studying HNSCC and other types of cancers, including in vitro and in vivo models. Although in vivo models are more representative of the human carcinomas in terms …
