Yoga is an activity that can provide children with tools and methods to better deal with and cope with these challenges. Mountain Movement has demonstrated that …

Planning And Designing A Sustainable Volunteer Based Organization: The Putney Food Shelf, Annik Yvette Paul May 2012

Planning And Designing A Sustainable Volunteer Based Organization: The Putney Food Shelf, Annik Yvette Paul

Capstone Collection

There are many reasons why issues of food insecurity and hunger exist. Individuals, families, and households have various barriers to food security, often facing more than one at a time. Barriers include limited fixed incomes, minimum wage not equaling a livable wage, unemployment and underemployment, poverty, lack of personal transportation and/or access to public transportation, limited access to shopping areas (food deserts), and health and medical issues.

Considering the current statistics listed below, combined with the ever-increasing cost of food, more households will be struggling to meet their basic nutritional needs. Food insecurity and hunger is a problem faced by …

Developmental Programming In Response To Intrauterine Growth Restriction Impairs Myoblast Function And Skeletal Muscle Metabolism, Dustin T. Yates, A.R. Macko, M. Nearing, X. Chen, R.P. Rhoads, Sean W. Limesand

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Fetal adaptations to placental insufficiency alter postnatal metabolic homeostasis in skeletal muscle by reducing glucose oxidation rates, impairing insulin action, and lowering the proportion of oxidative fibers. In animal models of intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), skeletalmuscle fibers have lessmyonuclei at birth. This means thatmyoblasts, the sole source formyonuclei accumulation in fibers, are compromised. Fetal hypoglycemia and hypoxemia are complications that result from placental insufficiency. Hypoxemia elevates circulating catecholamines, and chronic hypercatecholaminemia has been shown to reduce fetal muscle development and growth. We have found evidence for adaptations in adrenergic receptor expression profiles in myoblasts and skeletal muscle of IUGR sheep …

The Nosological Status Of Loss Of Control Over Eating In Children, Kelly Theim May 2012

The Nosological Status Of Loss Of Control Over Eating In Children, Kelly Theim

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

A significant subset of overweight children report loss of control: LOC) over eating: i.e., feeling unable to stop eating), a correlate of poorer psychosocial functioning and obesity. Another obesogenic appetitive trait, high food reinforcement, is characterized by a strong drive to obtain palatable food. LOC and high food reinforcement both predict increased energy intake and excessive weight gain, although the association between LOC and high food reinforcement has not been examined in youth. Additionally, the impact of LOC or high food reinforcement on pediatric weight loss treatment response remains unclear, including whether children with fewer alternate: non-snack food) reinforcers available …

The Unconventional Amino Acid Starvation Response Of The Malaria Parasite, Plasmodium Falciparum, Shalon Ledbetter May 2012

The Unconventional Amino Acid Starvation Response Of The Malaria Parasite, Plasmodium Falciparum, Shalon Ledbetter

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

The apicomplexan parasite, Plasmodium falciparum, is the causative agent of the most severe form of malaria, resulting in nearly 1 million deaths each year. The parasite establishes its replicative niche within human erythrocytes, where it degrades massive amounts of host cell hemoglobin, salvaging the released amino acids for its own use. However, human hemoglobin does not contain the amino acid isoleucine, which is one of the most prevalent amino acids in the parasite's proteome. Since P. falciparum cannot synthesize isoleucine, it must acquire this amino acid from human serum. Optimal growth and, ultimately, the survival of P. falciparum depend on …

An Exploratory Study To Determine If Marching Band Rehearsal Activities Could Satisfy National Physical Education Standard Three As Measured By The Heart Rates Of Collegiate Marching Band Members, Serena Weren May 2012

An Exploratory Study To Determine If Marching Band Rehearsal Activities Could Satisfy National Physical Education Standard Three As Measured By The Heart Rates Of Collegiate Marching Band Members, Serena Weren

Student Theses and Dissertations

An increasing number of states allow high school curricular credits earned in marching band to substitute for required physical education credits. Legitimizing this substitution would required that marching band meet contemporary recommendations for frequency, duration, and intensity of physical activity as stated in the Third National Standard for Physical Education. The purpose of this exploratory descriptive study was to determine the intensity of physical activity occurring in a marching band rehearsal by measuring the heart rates of collegiate marching band members using pulse counts and heart rate monitors. Some marching band activities were found to raise the average heart rate …

Can An Old Dog Learn New Tricks? Applying Traditional Corporate Law Principles To New Social Enterprise Legislation, Alicia E. Plerhoples May 2012

Can An Old Dog Learn New Tricks? Applying Traditional Corporate Law Principles To New Social Enterprise Legislation, Alicia E. Plerhoples

Transactions: The Tennessee Journal of Business Law

This article does not take on the broader theoretical debate as to whether corporations should attempt to pursue both economic and non-economic objectives. That debate is the topic of other legal scholarship. Rather, this article starts from the premise that the social enterprise movement is here and growing, as indicated by the number of states that have adopted new corporate forms to house social enterprise ventures and the number of business schools—both in the United States and in Europe—that are training business leaders and entrepreneurs in the field of social enterprise.

Fatty Acid Composition In The Mature Milk Of Bolivian Forager-Horticulturalists: Controlled Comparisons With A Us Sample, Melanie A. Martin, William D. Lassek, Steven J. C. Gaulin, Rhobert W. Evans, Sheela S. Geraghty, Barbara S. Davidson, Ardythe L. Morrow, Hillard Kaplan, Michael Gurven May 2012

ESI Publications

Breast milk fatty acid (FA) composition varies greatly among individual women, including in percentages of the long-chain polyunsaturated FAs (LCPUFA) 20:4n-6 (arachidonic acid, AA) and 22:6n-3 (docosahexaenoic acid, DHA), which are important for infant neurological development. It has been suggested that owing to wide variation in milk LCPUFA and low DHA in Western diets, standards of milk FA composition should be derived from populations consuming traditional diets. We collected breast milk samples from Tsimane women at varying lactational stages (6–82 weeks). The Tsimane are an indigenous, natural fertility, subsistence-level population living in Amazonia Bolivia. Tsimane samples were matched by lactational …

A Cross-National Analysis Of The Human Papillomavirus, Sexually Transmitted Infections, And Sexual Behavior Among Men, Euna Marie August May 2012

A Cross-National Analysis Of The Human Papillomavirus, Sexually Transmitted Infections, And Sexual Behavior Among Men, Euna Marie August

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

There is a paucity of research on the risk for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and sexual behavior among general populations of men. Research with male populations predominantly has focused on those subgroups considered to be at high risk of disease transmission, such as gay and bisexual men, injection drug users, and adolescents/young adults. Considerably fewer studies have examined factors among men, in general, and heterosexual men, specifically. Therefore, I conducted analyses with a cross-national sample of adult, sexually active men in Brazil, Mexico, and the United States to investigate sexual behaviors and risk factors associated with the human papillomavirus (HPV) …

Free Riding On Benevolence: Collective Action Federalism And The Minimum Coverage Provision, Neil S. Siegel May 2012

Free Riding On Benevolence: Collective Action Federalism And The Minimum Coverage Provision, Neil S. Siegel

Law and Contemporary Problems

Opponents of the minimum coverage provision in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) argue that this “individual mandate” is beyond the scope of Congress’s commerce power because it regulates the “inactivity” of not purchasing health insurance. Defenders of the provision argue that it regulates the “activity” of participating in the interstate health care market, including by obtaining health care without paying for it. This Article argues that the distinction between inactivity and activity is irrelevant to the limits of the commerce power.

Drawing from the theory of collective action federalism that he recently articulated with Robert Cooter, the …

Northern Lights: Fourth World Nations And The Geopolitical Dance In The Arctic, Heidi G. Bruce

Capstone Collection

Over the past decade, the Arctic region has received increased attention from climate scientists, politicians, and transnational corporations. Human-induced climate change is causing glaciers to recede, resulting in new northern sea passages that are highly sought after by businesses and governments alike. Deeply affected by this increased northern exposure are Arctic Fourth World nations – politically and culturally distinct nations encapsulated by states – that have lived in the Arctic for millennia. This paper examines the impacts that expanded northern sea routes are having on Arctic Fourth World nations and the conflict mitigation approaches being used in the region. Research …

The Uneasy Case For The Affordable Care Act, Stephen E. Sachs May 2012

The Uneasy Case For The Affordable Care Act, Stephen E. Sachs

Law and Contemporary Problems

The constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act is sometimes said to be an "easy" question, with the Act's opponents relying more on fringe political ideology than mainstream legal arguments. This essay disagrees. While the mandate may win in the end, it won't be easy, and the arguments against it sound in law rather than politics.

Written to accompany and respond to Erwin Chemerinsky's essay in the same symposium, this essay argues that each substantive defense of the mandate is subject to doubt. While Congress could have avoided the issue by using its taxing power, it chose not to do so. …

Achieving High Coverage In Rwanda's National Human Papillomavirus Vaccination Programme, Agnes Binagwaho, Claire Wagner, Maurice Gatera, Corine Karema, Cameron T. Nutt, Fidele Ngabo May 2012

Achieving High Coverage In Rwanda's National Human Papillomavirus Vaccination Programme, Agnes Binagwaho, Claire Wagner, Maurice Gatera, Corine Karema, Cameron T. Nutt, Fidele Ngabo

Dartmouth Scholarship

Problem: Virtually all women who have cervical cancer are infected with the human papillomavirus (HPV). Of the 275000 women who die from cervical cancer every year, 88% live in developing countries. Two vaccines against the HPV have been approved. However, vaccine implementation in low-income countries tends to lag behind implementation in high-income countries by 15 to 20 years.

Approach: In 2011, Rwanda’s Ministry of Health partnered with Merck to offer the Gardasil HPV vaccine to all girls of appropriate age. The Ministry formed a “public–private community partnership” to ensure effective and equitable delivery.

Local setting: Thanks to a strong national …
