New Way To Learn, New Way To Success: Transforming A Brain-Based Library Via Active Learning Instructions, A Hasliza, Wma Wan Emilin
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
The practice of active learning in library instructions can be traced back to the 90s and is seen to have exponentially expanded with the rapid advancement of technology. As opposed to the traditional lecture-based bibliographic instructions, engaging students in the learning process has become more and more indispensable in the current world.
The concept of brain-based library can be used to further enhance active learning environment in a library instruction. The presentation intends to relate active learning to the changing pattern of information access, which is crucial in dealing with the digital natives that become the patrons of today’s libraries. …

Bacteriophages Phi Mr299-2 And Phi Nh-4 Can Eliminate Pseudomonas Aeruginosa In The Murine Lung And On Cystic Fibrosis Lung Airway Cells, Aidan Coffey, Et. Al.
Department of Biological Sciences Publications
Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a common cause of infection in the lungs of patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). In addition, biofilm formation and antibiotic resistance of Pseudomonas are major problems that can complicate antibiotic therapy. We evaluated the efficacy of using bacteriophages to kill the pathogen in both biofilms and in the murine lung. We isolated and characterized two phages from a local wastewater treatment plant, a myovirus (ϕNH-4) and a podovirus (ϕMR299-2). Both phages were active against clinical isolates of P. aeruginosa. Together, the two phages killed all 9 clinical isolate strains tested, including both mucoid and nonmucoid strains. An …

School Day Segmented Physical Activity Patterns Of High And Low Active Children, Stuart J. Fairclough, Aaron Beighle, Heather Erwin, Nicola D. Ridgers
Kinesiology and Health Promotion Faculty Publications
BACKGROUND: Variability exists in children's activity patterns due to the association with environmental, social, demographic, and inter-individual factors. This study described accelerometer assessed physical activity patterns of high and low active children during segmented school week days whilst controlling for potential correlates.
METHODS: Two hundred and twenty-three children (mean age: 10.7 ± 0.3 yrs, 55.6% girls, 18.9% overweight/obese) from 8 north-west England primary schools wore ActiGraph GT1M accelerometers for 7 consecutive days during autumn of 2009. ActiGraph counts were converted to minutes of moderate (MPA), vigorous (VPA) and moderate-to-vigorous (MVPA) physical activity. Children were classified as high active (HIGH) or …
Learning Without Being Taught: A Look At How Schools, The Home And The Neighborhood Influence "Race" Conceptualization, Owen Christopher Gaither
Learning Without Being Taught: A Look At How Schools, The Home And The Neighborhood Influence "Race" Conceptualization, Owen Christopher Gaither
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
ABSTRACT
Where do we get our ideas about the concept of `race'? The conceptualization of `race' has long been a topic of interest in the social sciences and society in general. The word `race' has been used and defined in different ways and different purposes throughout U.S. history. The definition of `race' therefore is arbitrary, changing according to the situation, but the consequences of how the word `race' is used are concrete and effect peoples lives daily. This research, in accord with much of the literature on the topic, shows that public schools play a major role in the conceptualization …

Cooking In Crisis: Lessons From The Uk., Martin Caraher
Cooking In Crisis: Lessons From The Uk., Martin Caraher
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
The concern with low levels of cooking skills among the British population can be traced back to the 1780s coinciding with the start of urbanisation of the English rural classes. Modern concerns with the lack of cooking skills, since the 1980s, have focused on the links to healthy food choice and preparation. This has resulted in a number of initiatives but little policy development to support cooking in any structured way. Cooking was de-facto removed from the educational experience in schools in England and Wales. After much intensive lobbying the Labour government promised to introduce practical cooking classes for all …

The Development Of Molecular Gastronomy As A Subject Discipline At The Dublin Institute Of Technology, Roisin Burke, Pauline Danaher, Mark Traynor
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
Molecular gastronomy is the study of the physical and chemical culinary transformations that occur during preparation, cooking and consumption. Molecular gastronomy differs from food science as the social, artistic and technical components of culinary and gastronomic phenomena are explored. At the Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) the aim of developing molecular gastronomy modules is to use them as a tool to teach scientific principles to those who work in the Culinary Arts. Students and graduates can then apply their knowledge to develop and create novel dishes and food products. Scientific principles are taught, explained and demonstrated in the kitchen environment, …

Transcendental Thermodynamics, Richard E. Morel, George Fleck
Transcendental Thermodynamics, Richard E. Morel, George Fleck
Kahn Institute Projects
Thermodynamics is often viewed as a narrow, introspective discipline, trapped by its origins in the 18th and 19th centuries. By dramatic contrast, we show that the Fourth Law of Thermodynamics provides explanations and interpretations of all natural events, extending across artificial boundaries of tradition- al academic disciplines. The Fourth Law of Thermodynamics states that far-from-equilibrium systems increase entropy at the maximum rate available to them. This broadly inclusive paradigm applies to systems from molecules, to organisms, to the biosphere. The Fourth Law is the Law of Evolution. All systems that communicate with their environment exhibit self-organization and self-optimization, enabling the …

Exposure To Dietary Selenium And Soy Isoflavones In Utero Provides Greater Protection Against Prostate Cancer Risk Factors In Tramp Mice Than Exposure Beginning At 6 Weeks, Heather Schofield Lindsay
Theses and Dissertations
Prostate cancer is the second most commonly occurring cancer in men in the United States. Generally, an extended period of time is needed for a mutation to develop into a full scale tumor. Because of this long latency period, lifestyle and environmental factors, such as diet, may play an important role in the development and progression of the disease. Diet is one factor that has been implicated in the risk for developing prostate cancer. We previously showed that diets high in soy isoflavones and selenium (Se) decreased androgen receptor expression and expression of androgen regulated genes in healthy rat prostates. …

Shaping The Way Of Instruction: Fusion Of Games, Lecture And Theatrical Techniques Vs. Traditional Lecture Type Of Library Instruction: Examining Its Effectiveness In Undergraduate Library Instruction, Harold T. Franco, Bob P. Cauilan
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
Nowadays, traditional lecture type of library instruction may work only to few audiences. Students exhibit various learning styles and along with this instruction, librarians are also faced with users of new generations. Users who are capable of multitasking, tech-savvy and are more inclined to surfing the net and engaging much on online chat, Internet discussion forums and online games, may find traditional type of instructions ineffective and boring.
In order to give an answer to the effectiveness of the library instruction being conducted in each term at the De La Salle University –Manila, a study has been made to compare …

Magnet: Microarray Gene Expression And Network Evaluation Toolkit, George C. Linderman, Mark R. Chance, Gurkan Bebek
Faculty Scholarship
MicroArray Gene expression and Network Evaluation Toolkit (MAGNET) is a web-based application that provides tools to generate and score both protein-protein interaction networks and coexpression networks. MAGNET integrates user-provided experimental measurements with high-throughput proteomic datasets, generating weighted gene-gene and protein-protein interaction networks. MAGNET allows users to weight edges of protein-protein interaction networks using a logistic regression model integrating tissue-specific gene expression data, sub-cellular localization data, co-clustering of interacting proteins and the number of observations of the interaction. This provides a way to quantitatively measure the plausibility of interactions in protein-protein interaction networks given protein/gene expression measurements. Secondly, MAGNET generates filtered …

A Biochemical Study For Evaluation And Analysis Of Serum Protein Of Patients With Different Kidney Tumors, Rasha Hassan Jsiem, Hathama Razoki Hasan, Majid Kadhum Husain
Baghdad Science Journal
The amount of protein in the serum depends on the balance between the rate of its synthesis, and that of its catabolism or loss. Abnormal metabolism may result from nutritional deficiency, enzyme deficiency, abnormal secretion of hormones, or the actions of drugs and toxins. Renal cancer is the third most common malignancy of the genitourinary system, and accounts for 3% of adult malignancies globally. Total serum proteins were measured in malignant kidney tumor, benign kidney tumors, and non tumoral kidney diseases patient groups, as well as in healthy individuals. A significant decrease (p< 0.001) of total serum protein levels in patients with malignant kidney tumors when compared with those of benign tumors, non tumoral diseases, and healthy individuals. The lowest serum protein levels were found in patients with stage IV, regardless their genders. Analysis of total serum proteins using PAGE revealed clear differences in the number and shape of the bands in patients with different kidney diseases compared with healthy controls.
