Assessing The Psychometric Properties Of A Self-Efficacy Measure Within A Patient Navigation Research Program, Mariana Arevalo
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
There is a dearth of validated self-efficacy (SE) measures in the field of preventive oncology. The objective of this study is to describe the development and validation of a measure to assess patients' perceived ability to obtain the recommended care following an abnormality suspicious for breast cancer. Guided by a social cognitive theory framework, a 51-item measure was developed to explore perceived capability to obtain follow up care under a number of barriers. A multi-step process was utilized to assess the instrument's psychometric properties. First, cognitive validity assessments with experts were conducted, and these aided in the wording refinement of …

Status Gizi Ibu Dan Persepsi Ketidakcukupan Air Susu Ibu, Sandra Fikawati, Ahmad Syafiq
Kesmas

Genome Plasticity And Systems Evolution In Streptomyces, Zhan Zhou, Jianying Gu, Yong-Quan Li, Yufeng Wang
Publications and Research
Background Streptomycetes are filamentous soil-dwelling bacteria. They are best known as the producers of a great variety of natural products such as antibiotics, antifungals, antiparasitics, and anticancer agents and the decomposers of organic substances for carbon recycling. They are also model organisms for the studies of gene regulatory networks, morphological differentiation, and stress response. The availability of sets of genomes from closely related Streptomyces strains makes it possible to assess the mechanisms underlying genome plasticity and systems adaptation. Results We present the results of a comprehensive analysis of the genomes of five Streptomyces species with distinct phenotypes. These streptomycetes have …

Aim
Recently, it has been recognized that human skeletal muscle feed arteries can be harvested during exploratory surgery for melanoma. This approach provides vessels for in vitro study from a wide spectrum of relatively healthy humans. Although, the regulatory role of skeletal muscle feed arteries in rodent models has been documented, whether such vessels in humans possess this functionality is unknown.
Methods
Therefore, skeletal muscle feed arteries (~950 μm OD) from 10 humans (48 ± 4, 27–64 years) were studied using pressure myography. Vessel function was assessed using potassium chloride (KCl), phenylephrine (PE), acetylcholine (ACh) and sodium nitroprusside (SNP) concentration–response …

Food security is a situation that exists when all people, at all times, have physical, social, and economic access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food that meets their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life. However a billion people globally do not have adequate food to meet their basic nutritional needs and the world faces a potentially even greater crisis as the global population is expected to grow from about 6.9 billion (in 2010) to more than 9 billion by the mid-century. Agriculture remains the largest employment sector in most developing countries and international agriculture agreements …
Passion For Food: Redesigning The Way We Eat, Nicole Chen
Passion For Food: Redesigning The Way We Eat, Nicole Chen
Theses
Where has the passion in food gone? The focus of food has been on the obesity epidemic, as people demand fast, cheap, and easy foods. The symbol of food is no longer seen as a basic need for survival because of the abundance and options of goods. Being unaware of food and its' power to bring and express so many facets of life, has given me the chance to discover areas that could be redesigned. During these past few years learning about food has made me fully understand these processes as a symbiotic relationship. In today's society, what separates people …

This study used Aday and Andersen’s Behavioral Model of Health Services Use to examine the role of chronic disease and the joint impact of race and chronic disease type on mental health utilization. Using data from Community Tracking Survey Household Survey, we tested the assumption that chronic disease, chronic disease type, and race are related to lower rates of mental health visits when adjusted for predisposing, enabling, and need factors. After adjusting for population characteristics, we found that race significantly moderated the impact of chronic disease type on mental health utilization, showing that African Americans with cardiovascular disease were half …

Three complementary approaches for managing physical and psychological symptoms related to chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy were evaluated against an education-only control arm. This study included 26 participants who were randomly assigned to weekly, hour-long sessions of yoga, Reiki, meditation, or an educational control experience for 6 weeks. Each participant completed pre–post measures of neurotoxicity, quality of life, psychological distress, and mindfulness. Descriptive analysis of the data indicated that all experimental group participants demonstrated improved within-group scores on quality of life and neurotoxicity outcomes following intervention; however, the improvements were not statistically significant. Neurotoxicity worsened significantly in the control group, but there …

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Forecasting eruptions using volcano seismology is a subject that affects the lives and property of millions of people around the world. However, there is still much to learn about the inner workings of volcanoes and how this relates to the chance of eruption. This dissertation attempts to increase the breadth of knowledge aimed at helping to understand when a volcano is likely to erupt and how large that eruption might be. Chapters 2 and 3 focus on a technique that uses changes in the local stress field beneath a volcano to determine the source of these changes and help forecast …

Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice
Diabetes is growing in prevalence and costs. Guidelines for care have been available since 1983, yet diabetes care and outcomes remain less than ideal. CDC’s Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health 2010 (REACH 2010) identified diabetes in African Americans as a priority for action. This article documents the activities, interventions, and current progress of the REACH 2010 diabetes coalition formed in Charleston and Georgetown counties, South Carolina, in reducing health care disparities and describes next steps for improving outcomes. The Chronic Care Model guided many of the implementation activities, and chart audits were used to document outcomes. Ambulatory care …

The Effects Of Age, Cognition, And Health Numeracy On Use Of A Patient Portal Of An Electronic Medical Record (Emr), Jessica Taha
Open Access Dissertations
Diverse patient populations are increasingly using patient portals that are tethered to their electronic medical record (EMR). Patients using portals can view their medical history, review laboratory results and medication lists, and follow links to credible health information online. Many of the tasks performed with a portal depend on numeracy skill. For example, numeracy skill is needed in managing appointment dates and times, understanding medication dosage instructions, reviewing lab results, and interpreting health information from charts, tables, and graphs. However, there is no data available regarding the numeracy ability of patients and how this ability affects their use of a …

The Role Of A And B Vitamins During Orofacial Development Of Xenopus Laevis, Allyson Kennedy
Theses and Dissertations
Orofacial anomalies make up about a third of the 120,000 birth defects each year in the United States. Children born with these abnormalities must undergo immense physical and emotional strain in order to correct the defects. In fact, about $697 million is spent every year surgically treating children with cleft lip and/or cleft palate (2011). In countries where surgery is not an option, this abnormality causes immense difficulties in eating, hearing, speech, and psychosocial development. The causes of cleft lip/palate are extremely complex. Genetics play a role in the anomaly; however, 95% of cleft palate cases are non-syndromic and likely …

Various factors are taken into account in assessing objectively the dental status and the quality of life related to oral health, particularly in elderly. Basic socio-demographic characteristics and oral hygiene habits must be identified and screened, respectively. The dental health can be evaluated using indicators such as the ASA score or by determining the person’s level of autonomy. Cognitive ability of older people must be checked prior to use oral health questionnaires. This competence can be assessed by the Mini Mental State score (MMS). The use of Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) evaluates the nutritional status of patients. The aim of …
